Using the example of the reverse light sensor (switch) of a VAZ 21093 (21083, 21099) car, we will figure out what malfunctions lead to its failure, what negative consequences can occur as a result of this, and how to independently diagnose and fix the problem.
When the reverse gear is engaged, the reversing lamps in the rear lights of the car (white lenses) no longer light up. There are no visible reasons for the malfunction (there is no smell of burning wiring, no repair work was carried out on the car).
In some cases, fuse F16 (15A) in the mounting block may blow out. As a result, not only does the reverse light fail, but the instrument cluster also does not work (its lamps and sensors “hang” on this fuse).

How to diagnose and fix the problem yourself?
First of all, you need to check the contacts in the electrical circuit of the reverse light sensor. To do this, we put on and take off the chip several times. If the reverse light does not come on, check further.
We connect the contacts in the chip with a piece of wire. Turn on the ignition. If the reverse light comes on, the sensor is clearly faulty and must be replaced. If not, then there is an open circuit in the sensor's electrical circuit. In order to determine the location of the “break,” we use the diagram to check the presence of voltage in various parts of the circuit.
It should be noted that a circuit break can also be due to poor ground contact in the rear lights. Therefore, we check the black wire from the chip of each of the rear lights that is attached to the car body.
If the instrument panel fails at the same time as the reversing light, check fuse F15 in the mounting block. It can be replaced with a new one, and if it burns out, you need to look for a short circuit in the circuit.
For more information about the reasons for sensor failure and the reluctance of the reversing light to work, see the article “The reversing light does not light on the VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099” on our twocarburators website.

Built-in Chandelier
The reversing light on VAZ 21093 (21093, 21099) cars is made in the form of two white light diffusers in the rear lights.
The voltage to the reversing light sensor is supplied from the “B+” terminal of the generator (“30” on older generators), through the ignition switch. One of the sensor terminals is constantly energized (after turning the key in the ignition switch). This should be taken into account when carrying out repair work on the car. The electrical circuit of the sensor is protected by fuse No. 5 in the mounting block.
The wire to the reversing light lamps stretches across the entire interior of the car (from the driver's seat) from the X9 chip of the mounting block to the blocks on the rear lights (green wire).
Open circuit
Checking the circuit for open circuit is done using a multimeter. It is necessary to turn on the ignition on the car and set the gearbox to reverse gear. On the device, set the switch to measure DC voltage, as in the picture below.
We check whether the plus is coming to the lamp; to do this, remove the lamp and connect the device between the two contacts; if the device shows readings from 11V to 13V, then everything is normal and the circuit is working.
If there are no readings, then we connect one of the multimeter probes to the car body and take a measurement. The readings that appear on the multimeter will mean that the “-” mass is not reaching the flashlight. You need to look for a break.
If there are no readings, then the power supply circuit “+” and “-“ is open. It is best to contact an auto electrician to fix the problem.

Why don't the reverse lights come on and what should I do? The power supply circuit for the reversing lights is no exception; it is also protected by a fuse, which is located in the mounting block and has the number F16. Ask, I'm in touch!
Main reasons
- The fuse has blown. Both lamp bulbs are protected by one fuse link. Together with the lamps, the fuse will most likely protect some other circuits. Therefore, if your car’s taillights not only stop lighting, but also, for example, the dashboard backlight does not work, the first thing you need to do is check the fuse. You can find out which “socket” in the mounting block the lamp circuit goes through from the repair and operating manual for your car. In many cases, the main circuits are shown graphically on the inside of the fuse box cover.
Instead of a burnt-out insert, install only a fuse of the same rating. Installing a fuse link with a higher rating may cause the vehicle to catch fire. You can familiarize yourself with all the selection rules in the article “Classification of fuses for cars.”
- Limit switch faulty.
- Open circuit (breaking off pins in connectors, chafing wires).
- Formation of oxides, corrosion at the junctions of contacts, burning of pins.
- Poor ground contact of the lights. In case of problems with the general “mass”, brake lights and turn signals may also not work. It is extremely unlikely that both bulbs stopped lighting at the same time due to contact problems in the lanterns. But a bad ground can cause the reverse gear light to not light up on only one side. Of course, in this case it is worth checking the lamp itself.
Checking the functionality of the sensor (frog)
When you manage to find it, you need to check its performance status:
- The wires connected to it must be disconnected.
- A tester is connected to their ends. The device is switched to “resistance” mode and the measurement is carried out.
- Then reverse gear is engaged.
- The ignition is switched to the on state.
- The instrument readings are taken.
The device may show 0 Ohm. This means that there are no problems with it. If there are other indicators, it needs to be replaced. This must be done not only when the VAZ 2110 does not have reverse gear on, but also when the lights are on and reverse gear is not engaged.

Diagram of the fuse and relay block of the VAZ 2107 of the new model. Video
In the new version, the fuse and relay block is made taking into account modern technologies in terms of reliability and quality:
- Cylindrical fuses have been replaced by fuse links with pin contacts, which are placed on the unit board in two rows.
- The load value is marked on the fuse body. The body of the fuse link is transparent and if the fuse contact burns out, the contact break will be visible.
- For maintenance and replacement, a special plastic puller is used, which is attached to the body of the mounting block. Or use regular pliers to remove the fuse from the block socket.
Algorithm of actions when replacing a sensor
Changing it is not particularly difficult, but you need to do the following:
- To replace the car, you need to put it in a pit or drive it onto an overpass.
- If there is engine protection, it must be removed.
- You should first prepare some kind of container for the oil, since the moment the sensor is unscrewed, a certain part of the oil will leak out.
- Then you need to unscrew the wires that are connected to the sensor.
- The old sensor must be removed and a new device installed in its place.
- The oil that leaked out during the sensor replacement process must be added to the box.
- Next, the wires are connected. They must first be wiped dry to remove any oil that has got on them.
- Then you should start the car and check for light from the bulbs when reverse is engaged.
Such measures are one of the options for eliminating the problem in which the reverse lights of the VAZ 2110 do not light up.

Relay VAZ 2107
In every modern car, such an important element as a relay is necessary to reduce the incoming current in the circuit when the car engine starts.
Relays with designations such as R1, R2, R3 are necessary for heated rear window. Also, relay R2 turns on the high beam of the car, and R3 turns on the low beam.
You can see empty connectors in the relay block. The first connector is responsible for the operation of the headlight washer, and the second for the sound signal. The third empty connector is needed for the fan cooling the VAZ 2107 engine. The fourth block is used as a spare option; blown fuses can be installed in its place.
Video review of the old VAZ 2107 fuse and relay box:
Repair and maintenance of such an installation structure is very difficult and inconvenient. If a track on the board is shorted or broken, not everyone will be able to repair the device.
Sensor failure
The VAZ 2114 gearbox has a special sensor responsible for turning on the rear running lights. When reverse gear is engaged, a contact closes in the sensors, which sends a signal to turn on the rear lights. It often happens that this part is to blame for the breakdown of the rear running lights.
Location
The sensor is located on the gearbox housing, and it is screwed into it using a threaded connection. A connector with wires is put on the sensor to connect the sensor to the lights.
Below in the picture you can see the location of this part.
If you have problems with the rear lights, you need to look under the bottom of the car. Perhaps the problem is not even in the sensor, but in its connector, because the connector from the sensor can easily fall off, especially if you drive in deep snow.
Replacing the sensor
Replacing this part is quite simple; such work does not require special skills in car repair. You just need to prepare a 19mm open-end wrench.
Other causes of rear light malfunctions
So, at the slightest breakdown or short circuit of the reverse light, you need to immediately begin repairing it. This can be done both at service stations and at home, quickly and very simply. And this theoretical basis will be a great help!

Tuning tail lights
Very often on the roads there are “classic” VAZs with modified lighting fixtures. But if tuning the headlights is usually aimed at improving the standard light, then modifications to the rear lights come down to giving them a more aesthetic appearance. In most cases, car owners simply install LED lamps in the headlights and replace the lens with a more remarkable one. Such tuning in no way contradicts the design of the lighting and light signaling systems.
LEDs make the light brighter
But there are also drivers who, without thinking about the possible consequences, try to radically change them.
Tinting headlights negatively affects the effectiveness of light signaling
Dangerous types of taillight tuning include:
- toning;
- installing a diffuser whose cell colors do not match the established ones;
- using too bright lamps.
Replacing fuses for VAZ 2107
The fuse box table describes the positions and names of fuses that perform a specific function for each section of the circuit or group of circuits.
If a fuse link fails or a section of the circuit fails, you can find and check the condition and serviceability of the required fuse. To do this you should:
- Open the cover on the power supply and find the serial number of the required protection element.
- If damage to the fuse is not visible visually, then you should remove the fuse link from the board socket and “ring” it with a multimeter, measuring its resistance. This operation should be performed with the vehicle's power turned off and it is additionally required to disconnect the battery terminal.
- A failed fuse should be replaced with a similar one corresponding to the specified current value on the insert body or the rated current of the circuit.
- Removing the fuse from the board socket and replacing it with a new one from the group of reserve inserts located in the block is done using tweezers attached to the block body. In the absence of tweezers, work is performed with small pliers.
Replacing the fog light fuse
Proper operation of the fog lights is ensured by a fuse, which is located separately from the fuse box. Its location in a VAZ 2107 car is under the console central panel, next to the fog light button on the panel next to the radio.
To carry out work to check or replace the fog lamp circuit fuse, perform the following sequence of operations:
- Turn off the car's power;
- You need to use a screwdriver to disconnect the switches from the console in the place where the radio is installed, ensuring free access;
- Pull out the plastic insert on the console by squeezing it with a screwdriver to gain access to the fog lamp fuse housing.
- Remove the housing and check or replace the fuse.
- Reassemble all the elements and switches in the reverse order to make sure the fog lights are working.

Work on replacing the fuse and relay block is carried out only if it is impossible to repair the old block and it is necessary to install a new one.
Video of replacing the VAZ 2107 fuse box
The sequence of operations is as follows:
- The ground terminal is disconnected from the battery
- Removing the air filter housing
- Unplug all the harnesses that fit into the fuse box.
- The shelf in the cabin under the dashboard and the glove compartment housing are removed, then the harness with a connector is disconnected from the fuse box.
- Using a 10mm head, the block mount is unscrewed and the housing is removed along with the seal

- The new device is installed in the reverse order.
Burnt out lamps
One of the most common problems is a burnt out lamp. To check this, remove the light bulb from the holder and connect it to the battery terminals with a short wire. If the light comes on, then the fault must be looked for at another point in the electrical circuit.
First, check that the light bulb socket and electrical terminals are clean and bright. If there are any signs of corrosion, clean the socket with wet and dry paper, then reinstall the bulb and retest.
A burnt out light bulb is the most common cause
If the reverse light still does not come on, the fuse may have blown. Also, everything indicates a blown fuse if two reversing lights are constantly on. In this case, a replacement will be needed. Fortunately, getting to the fuse box where they are located will not be too difficult for you.
VAZ 2107 fuse box: injector
In modern VAZ 2107 models with injection engines, there is also an additional block with fuses and relays, which is installed under the glove compartment in the car. Its main purpose is to control the activation of the electric fuel pump, electric fan, and also the main relay.
The figure below shows an additional block with relays and fuses for VAZ 2107 vehicles with injection engines.

There are also a number of relays that are necessary to ensure the operation of the equipment:
- The brush drive relay is located under the dashboard.
- Starter relay, location to the right of the mudguard.
- Turn, ignition, alarm relays are located under the dashboard.
- The fog light fuse is installed next to the radio receiver under the plugs.
- The fuse for the headlight cleaner is located in the electrical wiring directly at the wiper drive.
