Choice of composition for power steering
The performance and service life of the unit depends on the production and quality of the liquid that is poured into the Solaris power steering.
It is always better to opt for authentic products from the Korean automaker. Its price may be slightly higher than its analogues, but road safety requires the use of only high-quality factory-made compounds and oils. Competitors may make products just as good, but you should only use them after consulting with your dealer.
It is better to buy a Hyundai Kia ULTRA PSF-4; the technical documentation for early generation versions allows the possibility of using ULTRA PSF-3. Knowing what brand of fluid has already been filled into the Hyundai power steering, you can determine the mixing order.
Mixing is carried out according to a strict rule: the fourth brand can be poured into the third, but not more than 50% of the total amount of the mixture. The reverse situation is excluded.
Video
The video shows step-by-step instructions for replacing the fluid in the Hyundai Solaris power steering:
Hello. We will change the oil in the hydraulic booster on a Hyundai Solaris.
To change the oil you will need:
1. Two jacks (to raise the front end and thereby hang the wheels).
2. A syringe with a tube for pumping liquid out of the tank.
3. Funnel for pouring new liquid.
4. Flat screwdriver to remove the pipes.
5. Pliers to remove the clamps.
6. Container for waste liquid.
7. Power steering fluid Hyundai Ultra PSF-4 SAE 80W. The color is light green. There is 1 liter of fluid in the system, but with flushing you need 2 liters.
8. Several rags and a 0.5 plastic bottle.
Step-by-step instruction
You can change the technical composition yourself within 30 minutes. Details can be found in the video instructions, but an experienced car owner can easily cope without additional help.
Replacing power steering fluid in Hyundai Solaris is carried out according to the following instructions:
- Initially, you should raise the car using a jack. This is necessary to relieve the load on the steering system;
- Next, you need to lift the hood and disconnect the protection;
- The fluid expansion tank is located to the right of the engine. Using a medical syringe with a tube, it is necessary to pump out the oil from the system and drain it into an empty container;
- Next, the hoses are disconnected. The oil from them will also need to be drained;
- After this, you can dismantle the expansion barrel and rinse it of any remaining liquid;
- The new solution is poured into the system to the maximum level.
After the oil is filled, you need to unscrew the steering wheel several times until it stops. This way the solution will flow through the system and begin to act.
After the first trip, it is recommended to measure the oil level using a dipstick. If necessary, top up.
Different types of oils
Dexron
- a separate class of ATF fluids from General Motors, produced since 1968. Dexron is a trademark, produced both by GM itself and by other companies under license.
ATF
(Automatic Transmission Fluid) - oils for automatic transmissions, often used by Japanese automakers and in power steering.
P.S.F.
(Power Steering Fluid) - literally translated as power steering fluid.
Multi HF
– special, universal power steering fluids that have approvals from most automobile manufacturers. For example, CHF liquid, produced by the German company Pentosin, has received approvals from BMW, Ford, Chrysler, GM, Porsche, Saab and Volvo, Dodge, Chrysler.
How to change power steering fluid on Solaris
First, you should raise the front of the car on jacks, hanging the front wheels. This is done to make it easier to rotate the steering wheel. Then take a syringe and pump out the oil from the expansion tank into a container.

Disconnect the upper hose from the expansion tank and place it in a container. After this, you need to turn the steering wheel left/right until it stops, pumping out the liquid. To drain the oil completely from the tank, you will also need to remove the lower hose, and at the same time, you will have to dismantle the tank mounts.
After draining the liquid, put the tank in place and connect the lower hose. Leave the top one in the container, and the top hole on the tank needs to be plugged with something. Next, install a funnel in the tank and fill in new oil. Then pump the steering wheel again until clear oil comes out.
Now you can connect the upper hose, fill the tank with oil to the top mark and start the engine. Turn the steering wheel again and add fluid to the reservoir if it leaves.
Procedure for a complete oil change
- We turn off the car and let the engine cool (it’s better to leave it overnight and do repairs in the morning). The fact is that the oil expands and foams when heated, so it will not be possible to objectively assess the loss or wear of the oil (this must be done if the oil is changed in the Solaris power steering).
- Open the hood and remove the wires from the battery
- We unscrew the cap on the power steering reservoir and use a syringe with a tube at the end to pump out all the oil from the reservoir (as in the photo). If you add new oil at this stage, then when the pump is running, the new fluid will mix with the old (it is usually all black), which will lead to a noticeable deterioration of the new oil
- If you are not looking for easy ways and want the oil change in the Hyundai Solaris power steering to be carried out at a professional level (without mixing new and used oil), then you will have to expel the waste from the hydraulic system
- We raise the front of the car on both sides so that nothing interferes with the free rotation of the wheels. You can place shoes under the rear wheels for support.
- Remove the return hose pipe from the tank (it is on top)
- We install the plug on the hole of the removed return line (just throw on a piece of hose and clamp it in the center with a clamp). Let's move on to the next step of the instructions for changing the oil in the Solaris power steering
- We put an extension on the end of the return hose (through the fitting) and insert the free end of the extension into a container for collecting used oil.
- Fill the power steering reservoir with new oil up to the MAX mark and screw on the cap.
- We go behind the wheel and turn the wheels all the way, then in one direction, then in the other direction. This way the hydraulic system will be pumped, removing all the used oil. The wheels need to be turned until clean (new oil) begins to flow from the return line. Changing the oil in the power steering Hyundai Solaris is not finished yet, move on to the next point
- We remove the extension cord with the plug, unscrew the cap, put the return line in place and add oil to the power steering tank, since some of the oil from the tank entered the hydraulic system to push out the waste
- Removing jacks and shoes
- We start the car, if the oil level in the power steering reservoir has dropped (which means the fluid has filled the hydraulic system pipes), then add oil
- Let's do a test drive
If some points remain unclear about how to change the oil in the Solaris power steering yourself, here is a video with the repair process:
Differences between changing power steering oil compared to other car models
The process of changing power steering oil is the same in almost all cars. In some Hyundai brands, for example, Hyundai Tussan, Hyundai Matrix and Hyundai Accent, it is recommended to flush the system, since the power steering mechanism in these models is more susceptible to wear. The main difference lies in the choice of oil itself.
As stated earlier, power steering fluid is available in three types:
- The red solution can have a synthetic or mineral base and is most often poured into the automatic transmission of Toyota Kaldina and Hyundai Sonata cars. In some cases, such fluid is also suitable for Hyundai Elantra hydraulics;
- Yellow oil is considered universal and is suitable for all types of power steering. Can be used in cars with automatic and manual transmissions, such as Audi Q7, Mazda 3 and ZAZ Chance.
The green solution is the rarest. Previously, such a product was also used in hydraulic systems, but now it is only poured into mechanical gearboxes.
Hyundai Solaris power steering fluid requires regular topping up as the car is used, but some drivers often change it completely, while flushing the reservoir to remove sediment.

At least once every six months, look into the Solaris fuel tank; if the oil there is dark and opaque, change it immediately! But, I want to note that changing the oil in the Solaris power steering is not entirely simple if you don’t have the right tools.
Check the condition and tension of the power steering pulley belt. Don't forget to check the system for leaks. In order not to bother, you can do this when checking the oil, once every six months will be enough. How to check for leaks? Just check for leaks at the connections of hoses and tubes.

Signs that replacement is needed
There are no clear technical standards and recommendations on when to change the power steering fluid of a Hyundai Solaris. Professionals recommend replacing it after every 60,000 km or once a year with heavy use, but there are other requirements.
So, the Hyundai Solaris power steering fluid needs to be changed in two cases:
- the hydraulic steering wheel drive begins to require physical force when turning the wheel, and the quality of vehicle control decreases;
- The power steering pump begins to make an unusually loud noise.
If the answer to the question of when it is necessary to change the power steering fluid for a Hyundai Solaris is beyond doubt, then it should be selected taking into account all the features of the car.
You can find products of many brands and different compositions on the market; it is important not to mix different brands in one amplifier when topping up, this can cause harm to the unit.
Hyundai Solaris maintenance cost
Having data on the prices of consumables and a list of work for each maintenance, you can calculate how much maintenance for a Hyundai Solaris will cost for a given mileage. The numbers will still be approximate, since a number of consumables do not have an exact replacement frequency. In addition, you can take cheaper analogues (which will save money) or have the maintenance done at a service center (you will need to pay extra for its services).
In general, everything looks like this. The first maintenance, in which the oil is changed, along with the oil and cabin filters, is basic, since its procedures are relevant for all subsequent services. With MOT 2, a brake fluid change will be added to them. During the third maintenance, the oil, oil, cabin and air filters, as well as antifreeze are replaced. Maintenance 4 is the most expensive, since it includes all the procedures of the first two maintenance, and in addition - replacing the fuel filter and spark plugs.

Gur in Solaris, what is it? Hydraulic power steering.
Actually, it is needed to make it easier to turn the steering wheel. But there are also many other useful properties. Thanks to the Solaris hydraulic booster, from
The steering wheel doesn't get hit by uneven road surfaces, and even if a tire blows out, you still won't lose control.
Maneuverability will be much higher than that of a car without steering wheel, control is easier, almost all the power work is done for you by the Solaris hydraulic booster, therefore, it will take you much less time to make a turn or turn.
Well, the most wonderful thing is that if suddenly, which very rarely happens, you get into trouble, then you will have the opportunity to once again enjoy the pleasant feeling of driving a five from a driving school). If the Solaris power steering breaks down, it doesn’t matter, you can control it. And if you have long been haunted by the desire to pump up your hands, then you don’t have to do any repairs at all.
The steering wheel is an extremely unpretentious thing and despite the fact that it breaks very rarely, sometimes you can still encounter problems, and it won’t hurt you to know how to calculate and fix them.

Color classification
It is wrong to be guided only by color gradation when choosing oil, although this practice is widespread among car owners. It is also often indicated what color liquids can be mixed and which ones should not be mixed.
Mixing is contraindicated with liquids based on composition and not color, and since now both mineral water and synthetics can be presented in any color, you should treat this information very carefully.
Red ATF gear oil is usually synthetic, the Dexron brand from General Motors is considered the standard, but there are products from other manufacturers, such as Revenol, Motul, Shell, Zic, etc.
Yellow oil, produced by the Daimler concern and under its license, is used in Mercedes-Benz hydraulic boosters. It can be synthetic and mineral.
Green oil. For the most part, multifunctional and universal liquids can be either synthetic or mineral in composition. They are used in power steering, suspension and other systems that operate on liquids. It cannot be mixed with other colors, except in cases where the manufacturer declares full compatibility, for example Comma PSF MVCHF is compatible with some types of Dexron.
