Instructions for replacing, adjusting and repairing the VAZ 2114 clutch

If, when releasing the clutch pedal, the VAZ 2114 begins to slip or shake, then it is time to repair the VAZ 2114 clutch. The appearance of crackling noises and various noises can also indicate a malfunction of the mechanism. Typically, such problems are caused by wear of the driven disk or the formation of cracks in its surface.

The first step is to visually examine the mechanism. Even if one or two elements are damaged, it is recommended to replace the clutch assembly. But if there is no extra money, you can change individual parts. For example, a driven disk. It needs to be changed in the following cases:

  • The rubbing surface has cracks and significant wear;
  • Damper springs dangle in their sockets. This means they are broken.
  • The seating depth of the rivets is less than 0.2 mm.

Prevention of clutch failures

To prevent such breakdowns from occurring, you need to adjust the clutch in a timely manner, do not make frequent and sudden movements at the beginning of the movement, lower the pedal completely if you make high speeds, try to purchase high-quality spare parts.

In any passenger car, the most important element is the basket, also called the drive disk, which is installed on the internal combustion flywheel. One of the clutch elements is another part called the release bearing, with the help of which the amplifier is transferred from the fork installed to the petals of the basket. It is located inside the disk and is connected to the input shaft using splines.

Important! The replacement sequence is generally not complicated, and if you carefully review the instructions, any driver can do it. For a replacement that occurs for the first time, it is better to do it with someone who already knows how to do it. With such an installation, the work will be accelerated and its correctness will be guaranteed.

It is better to carry out such work in places designated for this purpose, mainly garages with special pits and overpasses, or take them to a service station. Even if this opportunity is not provided, you can do it yourself by lifting the hood of the car with blocks of bricks or any other materials.

Basic faults

The clutch is an essential part of a car using a manual transmission. In addition to knowledge about how the clutch works, it is important to have an understanding of malfunctions.

The most common of them:

  • The clutch does not disengage completely. Air entering the release drive creates the feeling of a sinking pedal, as a result of which the driver cannot completely disengage the clutch;
  • the clutch does not engage. Common cause: cable break;
  • The clutch pedal refuses to return to its original position. Cause: the return spring has failed or is disconnected;
  • loud noise when disengaging the clutch. The noise indicates wear of the release bearing;
  • The clutch is not fully engaged. There are many reasons: wear of the drive disk linings, faulty springs, small pedal travel.

Improper operation and late replacement

Frequent causes of the above malfunctions are:

  • untimely clutch adjustment;
  • frequent and sharp jerks when the car starts to move;
  • high engine speeds when the pedal is not fully released;
  • towing a car;
  • manufacturing defect;
  • Typically, replacement involves installing a new release bearing, which is part of the clutch mechanism.

Observing clear signs of a malfunction, drivers are often in no hurry to replace it. This attitude leads to complete destruction of the elements and the car’s unsuitability for use.

Clutch replacement price

You need to decide whether you will trust the services or make the replacement yourself.

Estimated cost for replacing the clutch and adjacent parts in service centers:

These prices include the cost of specialist work. Replacing it yourself allows you to save a lot: the average price of a clutch kit is 3,000 rubles.

Which clutch to choose for VAZ 2114

When you choose a clutch kit for a VAZ 2114, first of all you will need to pay attention to the manufacturer’s brand, as this can be very important. If you purchase an inexpensive set, it will not work for long, will not withstand extra loads and will have to be replaced again. Subsequently, such savings will be reflected in your costs and time.

You also need to take into account that the quality of this product you purchased will directly determine your personal safety, but also the safety of those around you and the passengers you will carry, therefore it is impossible to predict when some part will fail if it cannot withstand the load. Therefore, you should first of all always pay attention to the quality of the manufacturer, and not to the cost; the difference in price seems to be small, but the quality of not so expensive ones is unimportant and the possibility of breakdown is much higher.

How much does it cost to replace a clutch at a service station:

Replacement partPrice
Clutch3500 rub.
Release bearing2900 rub.
Clutch disc2900 rub.
Clutch basket2600 rub.
Clutch master cylinder1100 rub.

Important points

  • When replacing the clutch, it is necessary to pay close attention not only to the condition of the discs, but also to the condition of the release bearing, which was mentioned above. After removing it, you need to turn it several times by hand. If rotation is difficult or a creaking or crackling sound is heard during scrolling, then the bearing needs to be replaced. If this is not done, all the work on replacing the clutch discs will be useless, since they will again become unusable.
  • The gearbox shaft and adjacent parts should be cleaned of dirt very carefully; it is best to wash everything with kerosene and wipe dry with a clean rag.
  • The above is a method for replacing the clutch with complete removal of the gearbox. But sometimes car enthusiasts do without removal. To do this, the bolts that secure the box to the engine are carefully unscrewed (one at a time). In their place, studs are installed, which are slightly thinner and at least three times longer than the mounting bolts. These pins serve as guides along which the box can be moved slightly to the side. This creates a gap between the engine and the gearbox, through which the clutch discs are removed. This method is less labor-intensive, but it has its drawbacks: it will be impossible to get to the release bearing and it will not be possible to thoroughly clean the gearbox shaft from dirt.

As you can see from this article, replacing a clutch is a very labor-intensive operation. Therefore, it is necessary to follow the proposed instructions exactly. You should also not forget about safety precautions, especially when it comes to removing the gearbox. This is a very heavy unit and you should be extremely careful when handling it.

The procedure for replacing the clutch on a VAZ 2114

When replacing the VAZ 2114 clutch, it will be possible to use a much simpler option - without removing the right CV joint and without changing the oil. If you cannot do without draining the oil, you will need to change the release bearing or fork.

When removing a car's gearbox, you should pay attention to the fact that being in a suspended state makes it difficult to access the space under the hood. While the vehicle is still on wheels, to further simplify the work, everything that will subsequently interfere with dismantling the box is disconnected and unscrewed.

To work, the following tools are needed:

keys or suitable heads;
wheel wrench;
removable key for ball;
jack, beam for hanging the engine;
pry bar or small crowbar;
rope;
screwdriver;
a mandrel with which the driven disk is centered.

When everything necessary is prepared and the car is installed in the desired state, we begin the phased replacement.

Step-by-step replacement of the clutch on a VAZ 2114

  • To do this, you first need to remove the wheels, disconnect the battery from the power system, dismantle the air system and sensor, then disconnect the clutch cable, and replace it immediately if necessary.

  • The cable in the car is needed for normal traction of the car with the track. It is installed mainly in passenger cars with a manual transmission, so it is present on these models.
  • Using a bushing, it is attached to the shield with special screws. Therefore, when replacing the clutch, it must be checked for serviceability. In the event of a breakdown, it must be replaced to avoid problems on the road, since it is an important component of the system.
  • During a complete or selective replacement, the drive shaft is disconnected from the gearbox and the oil is drained, after which you can remove the gearbox, but you need to do it carefully so that all parts are checked and replaced.
  • Use a socket wrench to unscrew the bolts that secure the gearbox to the cylinders, and with a 8mm spanner, remove the bolts that secure the pressure plate to the flywheel. After all this has been removed, we also inspect the driven disk, also called the basket, you need to make sure that it is in good condition, since the working surface should not have large gaps or cracks.
  • Then you need to pry off the ends of the rotating spring that secures the release bearing, remove it, the clutch and the rotating spring. After inspecting all the parts, we change what is faulty, for example, if you twirl the bearing in your hand and hear a crunching or noise, then it needs to be replaced.

  • Next you need to remove the switch plug. All parts must be wiped with kerosene to remove old grease and dirt.

  • Replacing a part is still half the battle. Before driving the car away, you need to adjust the clutch, it is better to do this with a knowledgeable person, if possible, as a result of this, the service life of not only the clutch, but also all the parts adapted to it depends.

  • After this, we tighten the new bearing, coupling and spring. To center the crankshaft, a mandrel is inserted into the hole and the driven disk is installed on it, and the disk is screwed into the flywheel.
  • Having completed all these installations, further replacement occurs in the reverse order, but do not forget to refill the oil after installing all the parts.

  • It is better to replace the clutch in a timely manner; this improves long-term performance, so if possible, avoid complete wear of the part.

How to change: sequence of actions

  1. The car is installed on the inspection hole. Wheel chocks are placed under the rear wheels. The front wheels are jacked up and removed.
  2. The hood opens and both terminals are removed from the battery.
  3. Using open-end wrenches, the air filter and the sensor next to it are removed.
  4. Access to the clutch cable is provided. This cable is disconnected with a 10mm open-end wrench.

  5. Now the starter is removed and the bolts on the upper part of the clutch housing are unscrewed (there are 4 of them).
  6. The gear shift drive and the support located to the right of the gearbox are unscrewed. After this, use a 10-mm open-end wrench to unscrew the flywheel protective cover.
  7. Using a spanner, unscrew the fastening bolts of the ball joints. Next, the drive shafts are disconnected from the gearbox and the oil is drained.

    The mounting bolts of the ball joints are unscrewed

  8. Removing the box begins with unscrewing the bolts holding the box to the cylinders. The bolts are unscrewed using a socket head 8. A wooden beam tied to a rope is placed under the box, on which it is hung next to the engine. Next, using the same 8mm wrench, unscrew the bolts that secure the pressure plate to the flywheel.

    The pressure plate is unscrewed with an 8 key

  9. The clutch pressure and driven discs are removed.

  10. Using a screwdriver, pry up the release spring holding the release bearing, after which the bearing is removed.

    The gearbox input shaft is cleaned of dirt

  11. Access to the gearbox input shaft is provided. It is thoroughly cleaned of residual grease and contaminants. The release bearing and spring are installed in place (replaced with new ones if necessary), then the shaft is centered using a mandrel. Only after this are the clutch driven and pressure plates installed on it. Then all components of the car are reassembled.

Good to know

After all, at this stage the replacement of the clutch ends. Such instructions can be used on all passenger cars of this brand, the only difference is that the elements themselves may differ. The disc, clutch or basket will be reliable if the engine is very powerful. The more powerful it is, the more reliably all the parts of the mechanism will work.

But in any case, you need to try not to give the car high speeds in order to increase its resource.

It is possible to replace the clutch without removing the box. The replacement is almost identical to the first, but the difference is that the box can simply be moved to the left side, the disk is changed through the gap formed between the engine block and the crankcase.

Replacing the clutch yourself not only saves your resources, but also gives you a wealth of experience in such a difficult task. You should know that when replacing the clutch, the release bearing must be replaced.

Take care of your iron horse, promptly replace all parts that have become unusable, and your swallow will serve you for many more years.

Acceleration

A clear sign of clutch wear is when the vehicle accelerates. If the car does not accelerate in proportion to pressing the throttle, that is, the engine begins to oil, but the car does not move, especially uphill, then this is exactly one of the following reasons:

  • The clutch drive is poorly adjusted (the cable is too tight or the hydraulic cylinder rod is too protruded, depending on the type of drive)
  • Clutch disc wear
  • Oil got on the clutch
  • Someone pushed hard from the start and burned the disk. One start is enough to get a good burn.

So, the clutch drive is tightened for a reason, mainly when the basket is already tired and does not work within factory limits, that is, it has lost a little rigidity and in order for it to move away from the disc when pressed, you have to press deeper on it. Definitely a replacement. Another reason may be a cable with less rigidity than necessary; it stretches more than it should and does not press much. In order for it to work at least somehow, it has to be clamped more than required. We need to check, otherwise the basket will turn out to be working, I had this happen.

When the friction linings of the clutch disc wear out, the friction between the basket and the flywheel disappears. The same thing happens when oil gets on the disk - a common situation when the rear oil seal of the engine leaks. Here you need to remove the box and change the oil seal, because it won’t work like that. At the same time, you can change the disk, you can leave the basket, and look at the situation.

Worn “slightly burnt” clutch

But the clutch disc also becomes unusable if you press too hard at the start (street racers, hello!), the disc burns out immediately and loses its frictional properties, with the bonus of a burnt smell.

In general, if it smells burnt when driving, then this clutch stinks, especially when it is not pressed in enough and the disc is rubbing.

Price issue

Unfortunately, over time the clutch can fail. Therefore, it will have to be changed. And how much such a purchase will cost is of interest to many car owners.

The current cost of a new set is 3-5 thousand rubles. The service of replacing it at a car service costs about the same. Therefore, think before you send your car for repairs or do the replacement yourself.
