Door locks are of great importance in the design of a car. When closed, they act as a car security system. During operation, the doors are kept from opening spontaneously, which can lead to a collision between the opened door and passing traffic or an overtaking car, and in the worst situation, to the passenger falling out of the cabin. In modern cars, various additional devices are being developed to expand the range of action of the locking mechanisms. Such as central locking, which allows you to simultaneously open and close all locking devices when you turn the key in the driver's lock cylinder, and close all doors by pressing a button inside the cabin. Or so-called “child locks”, when a child cannot open the car from the inside. On the Russian market, such new products include silent door locks for the Samara and Samara 2 families, which include the VAZ 2114.
CONSTRUCTION OF CONVENTIONAL AND SILENT LOCKS
Before we talk about how silent locks work, let us remind you of the door lock design of the VAZ 2114. This locking mechanism of the car consists of several elements:
- The inner housing in which the rotating unit is placed. It is the main door locking mechanism.
- The cylinder, which is connected to the rotary unit, has an individual design that matches the outline of the key. The key is inserted into the cylinder and sets in motion the rotary unit, which opens the door. A button on the door is connected to the body, locking it.
- Rods that control the door handles are connected to the lock body.
- In modern models, a gear motor is associated with locking, which turns on the alarm.
- The locking device, which provides locking, is attached to the car body.
- The operating principle of silent locks on VAZ cars is based on sound insulation of metal parts. To be more precise, the noise-insulating material covers the locking mechanism pin and the metal latch that are in contact with each other. Plastic is more wear-resistant, but rubber absorbs sound more effectively.
- In addition to this, the locking parts of the lock are treated with silicone, which provides additional sound insulation.
The so-called silent bolts, which are used to fasten and are required to complete all silent locks, have a good soundproofing effect. The essence of their noiselessness lies in the plastic clamp, which is put on before the thread. - Using an “8.5” drill, drill the front wall of the rack, and use a tap to divide the threads into “10” (step “1”). In this case, the removed screw will prevent the door from closing. This can be eliminated by deepening the hole using a socket and hammer.
- Make a hole with a diameter of 10.5-11 millimeters in the front rack, 8.5-9 millimeters in the second, cut a thread, screw the screw into the rack.
- Try closing the door. It may need adjustment.
- Then you can install the lock drives and connect the handles.
First you need to dismantle the external handle and make a plate that acts as a lever (as in the photo). It should almost touch the windshield, but not rest against it. If you do something wrong, the mechanism will not work.
- After making the plate, you need to assemble the handle and install it in place.
- Shorten the side handle drive rod from the used lock to the required length. Bend the tip of one side at an angle of 90 degrees, and make the other in the shape of a ring (as shown in the photo). Put everything back in place and check.
HOW TO INSTALL SILENT LOCKS ON A VAZ 2114?
Installing silent locks on a VAZ 2114 will not take much time, and anyone can do it with their own hands. You will need a powerful, preferably impact, screwdriver and a set of new silent locks.
- The locking mechanism is more accessible when the door is open. It needs to be fixed somehow so that it doesn’t swing on its hinges.
- You need to unscrew the bolts holding the lock one at a time, and when you release the second bolt, you need to hold the lock so that it does not fall down under the casing. Otherwise you will have to remove it too.
- First, unscrew and remove the lower bolt, and then the upper one.
Experienced drivers advise pre-lubricating new locks with machine oil so that they work smoothly.
Now that you have removed the old lock, you have the opportunity to compare it with the silent one and see their main differences. Screw a new one onto the door.
Silent locks are not expensive, a set costs around 1,200 rubles, and every car enthusiast can change them on all four doors.
Door opening method
If the VAZ-2109 door does not open from any side, then the cause of the breakdown is difficult to determine, since there is absolutely no access to the lock mechanism.
A somewhat simplified version of the breakdown occurs when the door does not slam shut completely and gets stuck in that position. Then it is possible to reach the latch from the outside with a sharp object.
To open a jammed door, you must first perform the following steps:
- When the sash is not completely slammed, try to get to the locking device using a steel flat ruler. It may be possible to open it in a similar way to conventional door locks with a latch.
- If the door is completely closed, try to move it to the slightly open position to gain access to the lock. To do this, try pressing the inside and outside handles together or alternately, while simultaneously pushing the door from the inside.
- Try opening the back door with a helper, who will press and release it to get it into position while you try to open the lock.
When simple means do not produce results, the door will have to be opened from inside the cabin, which will require removing its trim.
In practice, this is not easy to do, because the casing is pressed by the sash and it is difficult to pull it out without damage. But there is still no other way out: it is better to damage the inner panel than to mutilate the door itself.
To dismantle the decorative panel, you need to unscrew the armrest handle with a screwdriver, and then the storage shelf located at the bottom of the door card. Then the button that secures the lock from above is unscrewed and removed. Lastly, the window lifter handle and the opening handle frame are removed. Now you need to carefully separate the lining from the body using a pair of flathead screwdrivers and another suitable tool. You may be able to remove the trim without visible damage.
When the decorative panel is removed, access to the lock mechanism from the inside opens, although getting to it is inconvenient. Immediately check whether the rod running from the handle to the lock has fallen off. This is a fairly common malfunction that can be fixed with little effort. Put the rod in place and open the door.
If there are no visible reasons for the breakdown, simply try to open the door from the inside by working on the mechanism with various tools. If necessary, enlist the services of an assistant who will press or pull the door from the outside. Experience shows that such procedures for opening jammed doors can take a lot of time, so you will have to be patient.
HOW TO MAKE SILENT LOCKS YOURSELF
But some craftsmen suggest making silent locks on the VAZ 2114 with your own hands. You have removed the lock from the door.
- In its upper part, where the pusher is, there is a thin plate that acts as a plug. This plate must be removed, or rather, broken, otherwise it will not open. Under it there are two springs, which push the locking mechanism. One spring, which is thinner, can be removed completely, and the second one can be placed in its place. Lubricate the lock and you can bolt it to where it stood. The effect of removing the spring is no worse than that of new, silent ones.
- There is another way. To implement it, you will need to buy 40-50 centimeters of heat shrink tubing. Of those clamps that you want to improve, you need to unscrew the fingers. Cut the tube so that the threads do not overlap. The cut pieces of the tube must be heated over an open fire using a lighter or candle. The heat will cause the tube to expand, so carefully but quickly slide it onto the retainer pin. Wait until the tube cools down and fits tightly around your finger. Warm up another tube and also put it on your finger. Trim any rough edges, make sure the tube does not overlap the threads, and the upgraded part can be inserted into the retainer.
But a thicker finger can create a problem with closing. This can also be easily fixed. It is necessary to loosen the fastening of the latch on the body, and the latch itself should be slightly moved so that the door closes easily. The locks on the VAZ 2114 are adjusted in the direction up and down and left and right. By moving the lock, you can adjust the doors and thus achieve perfect closing.
In the same way, you can make silent, soundproofing bolts that secure the lock to the door. But for bolts, a single-layer tube will be sufficient.
Try both methods described above to reduce noise. The locks will work much quieter and softer, and the neighbors will stop looking askance at you.

Adjusting the mechanism
