If changing the alternator belt on a car without power steering takes only ten minutes, then on the contrary, in the case of power steering or air conditioning, as on the Priora, the procedure becomes noticeably more complicated.

The fact is that if power steering is installed on the car, then the location of the generator is already in a different place. The power steering pump is installed in its original position. The generator itself is moved higher in this case. In addition to the fact that on cars with air conditioning and power steering, the location of the generator has been changed, the belt itself also runs on a different axis. In this case, the part first passes through the crankshaft pulley, then the tension roller, the generator shaft, the pump shaft and again the crankshaft pulley.

Note. The replacement procedure on a car with power steering is complicated by the fact that the belt rotates around the left engine mount. Thus, in order to replace the part, you should lift the engine, and only then remove the chain.

Let's begin the replacement procedure:

  • First, loosen the generator belt;
  • Unscrew the engine mount.

Note. The bolt of this very support should, in theory, fall down after unscrewing, but it is possible that its head will rest against the power steering pulley. If this happens, it's okay. You will need to unscrew the power steering pulley, then unscrew 3 bolts, remove the pulley and pull out the bolt.

  • We lift the engine using a bottle jack (it should be installed through the oil drain hole, and a wooden block should be placed under the edge so as not to crush the edge of the crankcase);
  • Remove the crankcase protection;
  • Now take out the support nut;
  • We pull the generator belt through the support;
  • We remove the part.

Installation of a new part is carried out in the same sequence. But before buying a new belt, you should know that the part must have 6 rivets. In addition, the length of the generator belt must be exactly 1115 mm. If such a chain is not commercially available, then it is recommended to install a Priora belt with air conditioning.

How to tension the alternator belt

If you hear a squeaking sound from under the hood when it rains, or simply when there is high humidity, then most likely the problem is in the tension of the alternator belt. The problem is fixed quite simply. You need to tighten the belt more. In this article we will look at how to do it yourself.

You don’t need much of a tool, you just need a ratchet and a couple of 10 and 13 sockets.

This instruction is suitable not only for the VAZ 2110 model, but also for the VAZ 2111, VAZ 2112, since the principle and design of the alternator belt tensioner are similar.

  1. First of all, we look for the generator under the hood. It is located on the left side under the hood when looking at the car from the front. I think there shouldn't be any problems with this.
  2. Now you need to loosen the top nut securing the generator.
  3. Now use the adjusting bolt to tighten the belt.

It should be noted that the alternator belt plays an important role in the proper functioning of the vehicle’s on-board network, because it is it that transmits torque from the crankshaft to the alternator. The operating efficiency of the generator itself, whether the battery is fully or not fully charged, as well as the service life of the bearings of the generator itself depend on the condition and correct adjustment of the tension of the generator belt. If adjusted incorrectly, the bearings on the VAZ-2110 - 2112 generator will fail very quickly. Due to weak belt tension, its wear increases sharply; insufficient tension is usually indicated by such symptoms as belt whistling when slipping. According to the regulations, replacing the alternator belt on a VAZ-2110 - 2112 must be done at least once every 50 thousand kilometers, or if damage in the form of cracks is visually visible on the belt and a high degree of wear is observed.

So, we will tell you how to replace the alternator belt on a VAZ 2110 on your own. To make it easier for us to get to it, we tilt the reservoir with power steering fluid and the adsorber to the side, otherwise it will be inconvenient for us to get to the tension roller. Using a key set to “13”, unscrew the lock nut. We also use it to loosen the nut that clamps the “gene” to the mounting bar. After this, we move the generator in the direction of loosening the belt tension. We release the tension roller, the generator belt weakens and sags.

Since in our case we are considering a ten with power steering, we need to remove the engine from the support, this is not difficult and not scary.

We simply unscrew the two bolts securing the support and then use a hydraulic jack to raise the engine a couple of centimeters. Now we calmly pull out the old belt and immediately thread the new one, release the engine from the jack, tighten the mount and the two previously unscrewed bolts. We tighten the tension roller to the extreme position, thereby maximizing the belt tension. Then we tighten the belt as much as possible by changing the position of the generator, now we proceed to adjust the belt tension. The tension of the generator drive belt on a VAZ-2110 is checked as follows - with force, it should bend by about 10–15 mm when the belt is pressed between the generator pulley and the crankshaft. With proper tension, there should be a gap between the “frame” and the platform with the thread for the adjusting screw of about 15-20 millimeters. The arrows in the picture indicate the screws for adjusting the tension of the alternator belt.
