Knocks in the engine

It is not uncommon for even ordinary knocking sounds in the engine to become the cause of its complete failure. Therefore, be careful if you suddenly hear extraneous knocking noises coming from under the hood.

A knock in the engine almost always indicates serious problems, so it is not recommended to get to the service center on your own. Call a tow truck or cling to someone with a rope to get to a service station or garage to determine the cause of the sounds.

The knocking noise can be caused by various components of the 8-valve and 16-valve engines installed on the VAZ 2110.

Any knocking noise does not bode well, even if it is the sound from valves or worn pistons. Do not delay in eliminating the causes of noise, otherwise repairs will cost much more.

Additional support

In order to reduce engine movement in the longitudinal direction, an additional support (suspension rod) can be installed. They are mainly purchased in online stores. An additional support is installed on all types of VAZ 2110, but it has its own characteristics.

For an 8-valve model, you also need a special bracket that is used to carry the ignition module. Engine dismantling

To carry out repairs and modifications, in some cases you will also have to remove the engine. What can we say about the need or desire to change the power unit to a new one. There is no way to avoid this event.

To remove the engine you will need:

  • Pit or overpass;
  • Assistant;
  • A set of all kinds of tools;
  • The lifting mechanism is a winch or hoist.

When choosing a lifting device, pay attention to its load capacity. In the case of removing the engine from a VAZ 2110, this figure should be at least 200 kilograms .

Having prepared everything you need, you can begin dismantling the engine.

  1. Remove the hood. Be sure to use a marker to make notes on the location of the four washers. This will make putting the hood back together much easier.
  2. Relieve pressure in the fuel system. To do this, turn on the starter for 15 seconds with the wiring from the fuel pump turned off. Or simply remove the fuel pump fuse.
  3. Remove the battery.

Dismantling the battery

  1. Remove the plastic cover from the motor.
  2. Move the air filter housing aside.
  3. Disconnect the throttle cable from the engine.
  4. Disconnect the wiring harness from the throttle position sensor.
  5. Disconnect the wiring harness from the idle speed control.
  6. Disconnect the brake booster hose from the intake receiver.
  7. Disconnect the wiring harness from the ignition module.
  8. Disconnect the block from the camshaft and crankshaft position sensor.
  9. Next, be sure to disconnect the wiring from the canister purge valve. Disconnect the wiring block and the injector block from each other.
  10. On a 1.5-liter engine, the wiring block from the oil level sensor located in the oil pan is disconnected. The wiring from the coolant temperature sensor is also disconnected.
  11. Disconnect the temperature sensor wiring and the knock sensor wiring. The latter are located on the intake module.
  12. The ground wires and the tip of the negative terminal wire of the battery are removed from the engine.
  13. Remove the block with wires from the emergency oil pressure sensor.
  14. Now the fuel lines are disconnected from the power unit.
  15. Don't forget to remove the generator.
  16. Drain the coolant from the system.
  17. Remove engine oil from the system.
  18. Drain all oil that is in the gearbox.
  19. Disconnect the coolant hoses coming from the thermostat.
  20. On 1.5-liter engines (injectors), remove the exhaust pipe, and on a 1.6-liter injection engine, remove the catalytic manifold.

Removing the collectors

  1. Completely remove the gearbox.
  2. Remove the front wheel hub bearing along with the bolts, nuts and washers.
  3. One bolt securing the gearbox should be screwed into the upper threaded hole of the BC on the left together with a wide washer.
  4. A cable from the lifting mechanism you choose is tied to the bolt.
  5. The second lift cable is connected to the engine through a mounting eye. It is located on the cylinder head.
  6. Carefully lift the engine and secure it in a suspended position.
  7. Remove the upper and lower engine mounts.
  8. The right mount will be the last mount for your motor. Unscrew the top nut and lift the engine using the mechanism, completely removing it from the engine compartment.
  9. Remove it carefully so that the engine does not touch or damage anything along the way. Don’t forget, the engine on a VAZ 2110 weighs about 120 kilograms, and some versions weigh more than 130 kilograms.

Pull-pull

Make sure the winch can handle a lot of weight in advance by performing a test lift of a heavy object. Otherwise, the lift may fail at the most inopportune moment.

When installing a repaired or new motor, proceed in the reverse order of dismantling. Pour new oil into the engine, gearbox, and don’t forget about the coolant.

When changing the engine to a new one, you should understand that now engines from the “ten” cost from 60 to 100 thousand rubles.

As you know, the power units of VAZ 2110 cars wear out much faster than the car itself can last. I had to change the electric window lifter motor on a VAZ 2112, right door. Having seen that the window lifter was on a cable, I tried and succeeded in the following: Without unscrewing the window lifter mechanism itself, I unscrewed the 3 nuts securing the electric motor. Then, moving the electric motor aside so that the pins would come out of the door body, I removed the lower pin along with the plastic base, pulling it down along the motor body. After that, I bent the electric motor to the right, since the cable allows this, and unscrewed the remaining 2 studs by hand. And having pulled the electric motor from the gear on the cables, he took out the electric motor. I reassembled it in reverse order. It may not be very convenient, but there is no need to unscrew and lower the glass too much. It will lower slightly when the studs are aligned when installing the electric motor into the gear.

Prices for new engines of modification 2111 with a volume of 1.5 liters

The power unit for the VAZ 2110 modification 2111 has a volume of 1.5 liters and an 8-valve cylinder head. In fact, this engine model is just a modernization of the well-known VAZ 2108, and differs from it only in the installed fuel injection system, and some mounts for the generator and ECM sensors. The rest is the same design.

It is precisely because of the installed injector that this engine is somewhat more expensive and its price is 49,000 rubles, but this is the minimum, and in some stores prices vary from 50 to 56 thousand rubles.

Functionality check

Before changing pillows, you should check the functionality of the old ones. It may happen that the cause of vibration and knocking is not in them.

  1. We put the VAZ 2110 on supports;
  2. We install a jack with a backing made of board or timber under the oil pan and jack up the engine until the cushions are freed from its weight;
  3. We check all the pillows, namely: • Are there any cracks on them; • How easy it is to separate them from the substrate (it is made of metal); • Are they still hard? • If no obvious deficiencies are found, and replacement is not yet necessary, check the play between the frame and the plates; • Lubricate the cushions with a protective compound, lower the motor, tighten the fasteners and nuts.

Cost of model 21114 with a volume of 1.6 liters

I think that there is no need to explain and talk in detail about the fact that not only 1.5 liter engines, but also 1.6 liters were installed on the VAZ 2110. Due to the increase in displacement, engine power also became slightly higher - up to 81.6 hp.

Also, the engine characteristics were affected by the increased piston stroke in the cylinder to 76.5 mm compared to 71 mm. Although, with all the improvements, this motor has a certain design feature - a bubbling sound during operation, which is due to the fact that the piston is not fully compatible with the cylinder in size.

Fuel supply

Conventional injectors are not enough to operate the engine at high speeds. Since they are constantly in operation, the working pressure in the ramp is simply not enough. In order to increase engine power, you should install the most efficient nozzles, which can increase the volume of sprayed liquid several times. Such changes work most effectively with the 4-2-1 release technology.

Turbocharging

  • The most effective, widespread and most expensive type of tuning is the installation of a turbine. After all, it is known that in order to increase engine power, it is necessary to supply the largest amount of a mixture of air and fuel into the cylinders.
  • However, to increase the volume of fuel, a mandatory increase in the amount of air will be required, which is what the turbine does. The exhaust gases enter the turbine impeller, then it rotates and drives the compressor, which in turn pumps air into the cylinders.
  • Since the air is pumped under pressure, its quantity increases significantly, which leads to an increase in fuel combustion, which results in an increase in power.
  • Remember that installing a turbine will lead to a mandatory upgrade of the cooling system (diagram of a standard cooling system here).

Buying used used engines

If you consider options for purchasing used units, you should pay special attention to the technical condition of such parts and assemblies, such as:

  • connecting rod and piston group
  • Crankshaft and camshaft
  • cylinder head

You can check all these mechanisms and components as follows. The condition of the piston can be assessed by checking the compression in the cylinders. In normal condition, the crankshaft will be able to maintain optimal oil pressure in the system. Of course, it is highly advisable to check the performance of the working device!

The manual for the domestic VAZ 2110 car says that it is necessary to change the engine oil every 8-10 thousand kilometers. The process itself is not very complicated, and even a person without special skills can cope with it, and this does not require a set of special tools or devices. The work will take about half an hour, but you won’t have to wait long for your turn at the service center and also pay money for it.

Standard and major repair work: VAZ-2111 engine (8 valve injector)

Standard (typical) engine repair work on any vehicle is often needed not only when the car stops working. Depending on the indications, they may include the following operations:

  1. Replacement of components:
      valve lifters;
  2. oil deflector valve caps;
  3. timing belt;
  4. camshaft oil seal.
  5. Disassembly:
      cylinder heads;
  6. oil pump.

Oil change intervals

Experts advise replacing the lubricant in the VAZ 2110 engine every 8 thousand kilometers, and this is especially true for difficult operating conditions, which include:

  • constant driving in urban conditions with long traffic jams, when the engine is forced to idle for a long time;
  • low ambient temperature, which increases the viscosity of the oil and increases the load on the main parts and components;
  • driving in the steppes and on other dusty or sandy roads;
  • long idle time of the vehicle, as a result of which condensation forms in the engine - it penetrates the oil and changes the characteristics of the liquid.

You can determine that it is time to change the fluid by the darkening of the lubricant. This happens due to the accumulation of fuel combustion products in it, which adversely affects the operating parameters of the lubricant.

Modifications

The standard VAZ 2110 contains new developments and some features.

The first car was completely carburetor and 8 valve. This system had a volume of 1.5 liters and made it possible to develop about 70 horsepower.

This potential was enough to get real pleasure from movement. As for the maximum speed, it varies within 160 kilometers per hour.

After the carburetor engine, the designers decided to make an injector (already 16 valve). Essentially, these are the same 1.5 liters of volume, but with slightly increased engine power to 79 horsepower. This move made it possible to improve dynamism and increase maximum speed.

A small feature is that the system has a 16 valve VAZ engine. This is very unusual for cars of this class.

Until the 90s, the vehicle had a rather sparse interior and exterior. The designers made the car as a means of transportation, not a luxury. Only after the 90s were customers able to get a spacious trunk, comfortable seats, an adjustable steering wheel, air conditioning, and so on. Over the entire production period of the VAZ 2110, a huge number of modifications of its engine were developed: both an 8-valve carburetor and a 16-valve injector.

How much oil do you need?

Before changing the oil, many car owners have a question: how much oil to pour into the VAZ 2110 engine? Opinions differ on this issue, since not all the oil is drained from the system, and some motorists fill the lubricant to the maximum mark, while others fill it a little lower. In addition, the VAZ 2110 is equipped with various engines - with 8 and 16 valves. Despite all the factors, on average you will need a volume of engine oil in a VAZ 2110 from 2.2 to 3.5 liters to fill it. Therefore, you are better off buying a 4 liter canister and that should be enough.

Design features

If you have a “ten” with an 8-valve engine, then the design provides two side and one rear support;

On a 16 valve engine there are two side mounts, one lower and one upper.

It is important to note that 8 valve engines on the 10 have a rear engine mount, while on the 16 valve there is none. But such motors can boast of having additional supports

Regardless of the design, the replacement procedure is performed using a similar method.

Malfunctions

In fact, it is quite easy to detect failed airbags, since engine vibrations will immediately increase.

If the power unit is working normally, but the body is shaking, vibration is felt on the steering rack, pedals, and dashboard, then there is no doubt that the engine mounts are worn out.

The vibration peak occurs when the engine starts and when it is turned off. If the rubber elements are completely worn out, then a knocking noise will begin to appear. It is caused by contact of engine elements with the supports.

To make sure the cushions are worn, turn on the engine, lift the hood, and visually inspect the supports and cushions. By placing your hand on the engine, you will tactilely feel an increase in vibrations compared to the normal behavior of the car.

There may be several reasons for problems.

If the support is not damaged, it is not necessary to replace it. That is, in such situations it is enough to simply replace the pillow. A set of new pillows for a VAZ 2110 today costs about 1.3 thousand rubles. A set of supports will cost you 2.5 thousand rubles.

Doing the work yourself or contacting a service station is your choice. But you should know that you will be charged at least 300 rubles for replacing one pillow.

What kind of oil should I put in the engine?

When changing engine oil, you must immediately change the oil filter, so when buying fluid in a store, do not forget to order it too. All oils can be classified into several categories:

  • synthetic;
  • semi-synthetic;
  • mineral.

It’s not difficult to choose between them - you need to focus on certain indicators:

  1. If the engine of your VAZ 2110 is in good condition and does not consume oil during operation, and the pressure in all cylinders is stable, you can fill it with synthetic lubricant all year round, changing it according to the regulations.
  2. If the engine has a high mileage, you can fill in seasonal semi-synthetic or even mineral oils, since they are thicker and do not burn as much when the engine is running.

There is a wide range of lubricating compounds of different brands on the market today. Choose the option with the best price-quality ratio. The viscosity must be at least 10W-40, otherwise the lubricant will begin to seep through the seals.

An excellent option for changing oil on a VAZ 2110 is Shell Helix 10W-40. The main thing is not to run into a fake, since up to 40% of counterfeit products are sold on the market today.

Filling new oil in VAZ 2110

We proceed to the last stage of changing the oil on a VAZ 2110 8 or 16 valves. We do this according to the following scheme:

  1. Wipe the place where the oil filter is screwed in and all surfaces around it that might get dirty.
  2. Pour new grease into the filter, filling it halfway.
  3. Lubricate the threads with the sealing rubber of the new filter with oil.
  4. Screw in the plug and tighten with a wrench, but do not overdo it.
  5. Screw the filter into place, but do it carefully and without a key.
  6. Slowly pour new oil into the neck using a funnel for convenience.
  7. Check the fluid level so that it is halfway between the two marks on the dipstick.
  8. Screw in the filler plug.
  9. Start the engine and wait until the oil pressure light on the dashboard goes out.
  10. Stop the engine and check the oil level again, and top up if necessary.

Changing the oil on the VAZ 2110 is complete, and you can collect all the tools and go on a trip. The next day, check the oil level with a dipstick and, if necessary, add it to the normal level.

Service

This section includes changing the oil and adjusting the valves (8 and 16 valve engines).

Experts recommend changing the oil every 15 thousand kilometers. If you do not comply with these requirements, the power unit will quickly fail. Otherwise, the oil will end up in unnecessary areas of the engine; Next, you can start the power unit and wait a few minutes until the system warms up and the oil goes through several circles. Only after 20 minutes can you check the oil level. If it is not enough, then feel free to add more. In other cases, the process is completed, you can screw on the cover and put in the replaced engine mount; We also check the dashboard. The Check Engine light should not be on.

ADJUSTMENT OF VALVES

This process is the most complex and quite interesting. The performance of the power unit and its stability will depend on the correctness of the actions.

If you want to tune the VAZ 2110 engine, then adjusting the valves can be classified as some kind of tuning.

The adjustment is carried out using the device:

  1. Open the valve mechanism cover and completely remove the timing belt cover;
  2. We install a device that will allow you to easily carry out all the actions;
  3. We put the necessary marks on both the crankshaft and the camshaft. They are necessary for proper adjustment. You should also check the timing belt. It should be taut, not hanging;
  4. Checking the gap;
  5. Next, unscrew the washer and replace it with a new one according to the formula:

  • where A is the measured gap;
  • B – thickness of the removed washer;
  • C – nominal gap;
  • N – thickness of the new washer.
