Volkswagen key fob diagnostics and power replacement

Any driver, if desired, can equip his car with an electronic system for starting the internal combustion engine and opening doors. New cars are equipped with such devices, which provide certain convenience, but over time they stop working. Not everyone will immediately guess that the battery is dead, so it is worth describing the procedure for replacing it, especially since it is not difficult to perform. Accordingly, there comes a time when you have to replace the battery in the Volkswagen key. The procedure is not complicated, but there are some nuances that depend on the model of the central locking system and immobilizers.

We disassemble the key for Volkswagen Passat B5 1996-2002

This manual is suitable for all Passat bodies up to 2005. Later, other keys began to be produced.

Why are we taking it apart? Many people will find it useful to know how to replace the battery. Some people need to get a microchip to reset it in a different key body.

There is a general diagram of the division of the case and the location of the battery.

Use a flat-head screwdriver to separate it at the intersection of the two parts, from the inside.

With light force we pull one half out of the other and the key will separate.

The chip in the part with the folding mechanism is removed.

Unscrew the small bolt at the back. Now we divide it in half along the seam. You have to make an effort: there are stops.

The mechanisms will fall out from the tip of the key, and in the second half there will be a chip in the recess. Easily removed with a screwdriver.

The second part contains the battery and microcircuit. Separate the housing in half using a screwdriver.

With difficulty - the parts will fall apart, now the battery is easy to change.

The card is not secured in the case, you can simply peel it off and it will fall out of the case.

All parts are disassembled.

How to disassemble the ignition key of a VW Jetta

A new car just purchased at a car dealership is always joy and euphoria for the owner. However, it does not take long for this first impression to turn into a sense of duty, since any car, no matter how perfect it may be, requires immediate attention and maintenance. And this applies not only to consumables. Sooner or later, there comes a time when the battery life of the remote key also becomes zero and the car owner is faced with the logical question of how to disassemble the original Volkswagen Jetta remote key in order to replace the battery inside it. Of course, you can continue to drive the car by opening the door with the most ordinary key, but sooner or later you will get tired of it and you will want to change it to a remote analogue.

The instructions for the key fob say that if you press the button and do not see a flickering response light beam, you will need to replace the battery by contacting your nearest service center for this service. But replacing a battery is not the most compelling reason to seek help from a car service center. Here's a quick guide to help you replace the battery yourself.

Due to the fact that the concern unites such well-known brands as Skoda, Volkswagen and the widespread Audi, many elements that do not affect aesthetic perception are generally similar in these cars. In particular, the design of the key fobs themselves, their disassembly and battery replacement are very similar.

After all, you don’t want to get into a stupid situation when you approach your car, press the door open button and in response there is silence? Neither disarm the security, nor open the doors, nor turn on the alarm, and if you start from the button, it will be impossible to even start the car!*

* In fact, this is not entirely true; in addition, we will explain the algorithm for emergency opening and starting of a car in which the battery in the key is dead. We will also leave a link to detailed material.

The most common reason why doors won't open is because the remote control battery is low.

A little trick on how to make sure that the battery needs to be replaced. On older models, a flashing LED (red or green light on the remote control) can be a sign of impending problems. In modern car models, the on-board computer display warns of low battery charge. There is no need to ignore these warning signs, even if your vehicle has emergency (key) access set up in case the battery is completely dead. The problem is that a discharged battery can leak, which can completely damage the key fob.

The good news is that you don't need to contact service to replace the battery. There are many instructions on how to restore your keychain functionality on the Internet. Our online publication about cars has also published a number of instructions, some of which you can find right now:

Second key option

The second option is a retractable (flip) key.
This type is presented in the form of a black plastic box with three buttons: opening the lock, opening the trunk, closing the lock. At the top there is a button that releases the spring and allows the key to extend. In the internal part there is a microcircuit that includes an immobilizer (part number ID48A1) and is a signal conductor between pressing the button and transmitting a radio signal to the car. To purchase this particular key, there is an article number, original number, K0 959 753 AB (5K0837202AD). This article is not a guarantee that the purchased key will be original, however, all the internals that the key contains can be transferred to a similar blank. The article number can be found in the tip storage cavity. The original key is assembled very firmly, the latches hold very tightly.

As a rule, the original key does not play and will hold together. This key is not so easy to disassemble, you will have to use a drill to get the insides out. Between the two parts of the plastic case there is a gasket that prevents moisture from entering the inside of the key. There is an LED indicator indicating signal transmission. The battery in the flip key is CR2032 3V. The central locking frequency is European, 433 MHz. Blade HU66.

How to change the battery in the key of a Volkswagen Passat, Touareg, etc.

If the battery in your car key fob is dead, you can contact a service center to replace it. But since any such device has a simple design, you can independently understand how to change the battery in a Volkswagen key without resorting to the services of professional technicians. In general, the principle of replacing a battery is simple and should not be too complicated.

Replacing the battery in the Passat key fob

Replacing the battery in Volkswagen Passat B6, 7 and other models begins with the fact that you must first remove the service key from the outside. To remove it from the side of the key fob, you need to find a small button, press it and pull the device towards you. You should then carefully remove the chrome trim by carefully running your finger along the left side of the VW logo.

The chrome trim is removable and has a small hole underneath. You should now carefully pry up the case using a small screwdriver or a bent paper clip. Please note that the housing is locked. After a characteristic click, the case moves and the battery compartment is inside.

Having found the battery compartment, it becomes clear how to change the battery in the key Volkswagen Passat B6 and similar models. It’s not difficult: we take out the old element, replace the battery with a new “tablet” and assemble the key fob in the reverse order. The main thing is to take your time and be careful not to damage the fragile plastic elements.

As for the battery itself, it is worth buying “button” lithium batteries, which are suitable for all key fobs, including those for the Volkswagen Golf. These are three-volt CR power supplies (CR2016), which can be purchased at any store or ordered online.

Volkswagen of various modifications (Golf, Passat) has keys that must be opened to the side, or the key fob may consist of two parts, which, when opened, must be pulled firmly, but very carefully, in different directions, while holding the button pressed. A wide flathead screwdriver will come in handy to lift the lid.

The Touareg has the key

The design of this key fob at first glance seems more complex than that of the Passat, but, in essence, replacing the battery in the Touareg key is done in a similar way.

First, as usual, remove the spare key by clicking on the Volkswagen logo. This will provide access to the holes, into one of which you can carefully insert an unfolded paper clip. Thus, the cover is removed (in this case it is on the side). We recommend watching the video below, everything is clearly shown.

Replacing the Volkswagen Touareg key battery is easy: the compartment cover is opened with your finger and the old battery is removed from the compartment and replaced with a new one. Next, the compartment is installed in place and the key fob is assembled in the reverse order: first the cover (until it clicks) and finally the key returns to its place.

Any key fob, regardless of design differences, is so simple that you do not need to contact a service center to replace the battery at all. If you want and are careful, you can do it yourself.

Review of batteries for Volkswagen car keys

The Volkswagen car key with buttons is powered by lithium batteries - a miniature battery, the size of which is comparable to a small button.

The most common brand is CR2032. It is also called a tablet. It is this that maintains the functionality of the VW push-button key for a long time.

Marking of lithium disk batteries

The first two Latin letters indicate the electrochemical system that is used in this type of planar current source. CR are manganese-lithium cells enclosed in a steel case. Lithium is used as the anode, and heat-treated manganese dioxide MnO2 is used as the solid positive electrode. The next two digits indicate the diameter, which is a whole number in mm. The last numbers indicate the height of the disk battery in tenths of a millimeter. Thus, the CR2032 battery stands for this:

  • CR - lithium battery with manganese-lithium electrochemical system;
  • 20 - battery diameter equal to 20 mm;
  • 32 - battery height equal to 3.2 mm.

The battery sockets in all car keys with Volkswagen buttons are the same and equal to 2 cm. Therefore, they use batteries from different manufacturers, the diameter of which is 20 mm.

Pros and cons of CR2032 lithium battery

  1. Provides excellent performance thanks to high energy consumption.
  2. It has good workmanship and, as a result, a long service life.
  3. Guarantees long storage time due to low self-discharge current.
  4. Does not lose performance over a wide temperature range: from –35 to +60 degrees.
  5. Complies with international quality standards: ISO 9001, UN 38.3, CE, RoHS, SGS.
  1. The price is higher than that of analogues with other types of elements.
  2. Requires careful handling due to the risk of fire if the integrity of the housing is damaged.

Rating of CR2032 batteries of different brands by endurance

The experiment involved 15 CR2032 batteries of different brands.

To reduce test time, an extreme load of 3 kOhm was connected to each disk current source and the time during which the voltage dropped to 2.7 volts was measured. In reality, a key with VW buttons creates many times less load on the battery than during testing.

In first place by a significant margin is the Chinese Camelion battery, priced at 25 rubles. for one piece. Expensive Indonesian disk power sources Renata, Duracell and Energizer took the next three places. But their price is several times higher than that of the first brand. The Japanese Maxell, Sony and Panaconic, which are much inferior to the leaders, disappointed.

User reviews

Somehow, in passing, I picked up batteries for a car remote control under the Era brand. This company sells LED lights and everything that comes with it. So the batteries turned out to be very normal, despite the low price. Honest Chinese.

I don’t agree about maxell. Six months ago I bought several packs of 2032. It lasted for three weeks instead of six months. They lie on the table, they don’t even pull the signal properly. I don’t argue that the company is decent, but no one is safe from counterfeiting.

Sony CR2032 battery, I had this battery in my car key. This is far from the cheapest battery of this type, it would seem standard, ordinary lithium, like everyone else, but as they say, everything is learned by comparison, this is no exception, so I use the remote control with the same frequency, this battery worked for almost 3 years. Others work less, for example, Camellion, I tried it - but that’s another story, so Sony’s quality is worth the money, even if it’s more expensive, but you’ll have to buy it less often, and you can save on time of use. But it’s up to everyone to do what’s best; I won’t rush into it myself.

I would like to share my experience of using lithium batteries type CR-2032 from Camelion. For almost 5 years I have been using these batteries in a variety of electrical appliances (floor scales, kitchen scales, an additional key fob for a car alarm, a adding machine, etc.). I have a desktop computer for more than 8 years and recently I haven’t used it often and the lithium battery of this type on the motherboard, which is responsible for saving the BIOS bootloader settings, has run out. After changing the battery I forgot about this problem for more than a year. Batteries are sold in a package of one battery. The cost is within 40 rubles, but the quality does not suffer. On the reverse side are written safety precautions and information about the manufacturer. The batteries have the best balance of quality and price.

A good battery is like a good waiter; while it’s working, we don’t pay attention to it. CR-2032 batteries are widely used in radio keys for cars, flashlights, computers, children's toys, alarm key fobs and many other devices. A client once arrived with a complaint that the buttons on the car key stopped working. I even started wondering how much a new key cost. After a series of simple manipulations, I see that the LED indicator on the key does not work, I take out the battery and ask when the last replacement was. The answer shocked me - never. Three years of daily use. Panasonic knows how to make batteries, even though it was produced in Indonesia, albeit for Germany, where the car came from. Unfortunately, batteries purchased in our store do not last longer than a year.

Can't you start a car with keyless entry with a dead key fob?

It's actually not that simple. Firstly, as we already said, the doors can be opened with a key. You know those folding keys on some car models? But even if it's not in the remote control, it's still there. So to speak, an emergency mechanical option. We wrote about this in detail here:

We find the emergency keyhole, pry it open with WD-40 (since no one uses it, the mechanism may rust), then open the car according to the instructions.

Disassembling the flip key from the Polo sedan

The dominance of electronics in our time is a standard phenomenon. Technology development does not stop. The car's mechanical components have been replaced with electronic ones. The day is not far off when a car will be controlled not by a person, but by a computer.

An integral part of any car, be it a foreign car or a representative of the domestic automobile industry, is the key. A traditional device that allows you to open or close the interior of a car and activate the ignition system. Previously, it looked like the most ordinary key with a skillfully carved blade, individually threaded for a specific car. It was difficult to distinguish the car key from the one used to lock the apartment or garage.

Where to buy a key and how much it costs

The most reliable, guaranteed and high-quality way to get a new key is to order from an official VW dealer. When ordering from an official dealer, it is important to know that the key will be delivered from the manufacturer’s factory, completely new and already having the necessary firmware that matches your car. The dealer does not make duplicates.

A less reliable way would be to order a key on websites or services specializing in the manufacture and sale of car keys. Having a special code (VIN number), you can be delivered a key with a carved pattern on the key blade. Prices for a flip key for a Volkswagen Polo, in which the blade will be turned and programmed, for example, in Moscow are in the range from 5,000 to 7,000 rubles. The key can be received within a week.

You can also order a non-original key from AliExpress using the keywords volkswagen polo, key article number. The price will be 500-600 rubles, but after receipt, you will need to grind the ignition key to fit the lock cylinder (500-1000) and programming (1000-1500 rubles), which in total can amount to 2000-3000 rubles.

Is the remote control broken? You can probably fix it

Remote controls and car keys have a long service life and are subject to drops, vibration, humidity, high and low temperatures. If replacing the battery does not have the desired effect, it may need to be repaired. Almost everything can be reproduced - you can buy new cases, erasers, microelements and electronic components for popular models.

First method

There is no need to contact a specialist to reset the service interval on your Tiguan. If you carry out maintenance yourself and want to save money, resetting or knocking down the counter will not be difficult.

This does not require connecting additional equipment or using special software. To restore the current inspection service on the Volkswagen Tiguan crossover, it is enough to perform several manipulations from inside the car.

The first method considered includes the following procedures:

  • After this, you must turn off the ignition.
  • the on-board computer screen returns to the main display mode;
  • In this case, an instruction manual must be issued;
  • then the reset button is pressed;
  • briefly press the clock setting button (min) and hold for 20 seconds;
  • this button is held down;
  • car ignition is on;
  • ignition starts;
  • a special reset button is pressed on the panel, which is designated as 0.0;

That's it, the maintenance interval has been reset, so the special notification on the screen will no longer bother the driver.

The main thing here is not just to delete the information message, but to carry out the actual maintenance, replace all consumables according to the regulations and continue to use the car until the next maintenance.

As you can see, auto-reset of the maintenance interval on the Volkswagen Tiguan crossover should not cause any particular difficulties. But there are two more alternative methods that may be useful to you.

Replacing the battery in a car remote control

Below we will show you how to replace the remote control battery used in many current VW AG models, including Skoda, Volkswagen and Seat. Disassembly can be done without the use of specialized tools. A flathead screwdriver is sufficient.

Attention! In other cars the procedure may be completely different, for example in older cars of the same VW group you had to first remove the remote control housing and then open the battery cover.

In a car anti-theft remote control with a keyless entry system, you must first remove the “sting” of the folding key and only then begin to open the case. After replacing the battery, you may need to resynchronize the remote control with the car - the procedure here also depends on the model.

Opening the case: in this case, you can use your fingers, but it is better to help yourself with a screwdriver.

What kind of battery is needed

The Volkswagen button car key uses CR2032 lithium batteries, called tablet batteries in the driver's community. Regardless of the key fob model, the space for placing the battery in them is two centimeters. Therefore, any battery with this diameter will do.

CR2032 has proven itself best because they have:

  • high energy intensity ensures excellent performance;
  • long service life is guaranteed by high quality;
  • performance characteristics are maintained both at -35° and +60°;
  • full compliance with international quality standards such as ISO 9001, SGS, UN 38.3, RoHS, CE.

Almost the only drawback was the rather high cost.

Instructions for disassembling the Volkswagen Passat B6 key

If after all the manipulations the door still does not open from the key fob, you need to go to a service station; perhaps the key has become “disconnected” from the comfort unit; an electrician will solve this problem.

For various reasons, the Volkswagen Passat key may not work. Let's look at how to disassemble the key of the Volkswagen Passat B6 and other models to correct the situation.

Why does the Volkswagen Passat key not work?

Why the Volkswagen Passat key does not work, let's figure it out:

  • The key battery is low.

When you press the door open button or any other button on the remote control, the LED indicator (if equipped) should light up. If the indicator does not light up, this is the first sign of a low battery.

Volkswagen Passat B6 - replacing the battery in the key

  • The battery is dead.

Open the door with the key and try to start the car. If starting is difficult, you can only hear relay clicks, which means the battery is low and needs to be charged. If the engine starts without difficulty, the battery condition is satisfactory in normal mode.

  • The central locking contact has failed or is broken; it is also called the comfort unit.

To access the lock (connector) of the comfort unit, you must remove the glove box; the unit is located behind it. The glove compartment is fixed with 7 screws, 3 at the bottom and 4 at the top, you need to unscrew all the screws and press the rectangular hole at the bottom with a flat screwdriver, remove the glove compartment. Then we remove the connector from the comfort unit and check the presence of power using a multimeter or a test lamp (car voltage indicator 6-12V), after which you need to check the integrity of the wiring from the comfort unit to the door, which does not respond to the key fob if you are not working behind the door.

  • Disturbances in the operation of reception and transmission in the key or in the comfort lock.

In this case, you can’t do anything without special equipment - you need to go to a gas station.

  • The door lock solenoid contact is faulty or broken.

To check the operation of the door solenoid, it is necessary to remove the door trim, remove the connector from the solenoid drive and check the integrity of the wiring from the solenoid connector to the comfort unit connector using a multimeter in the “ring” mode or using a 6-12V voltage indicator (test lamp). To do this, insert the sensor into the connector and press the open/close button on the remote control, moving the sensor to different contacts of the connector accordingly. If the signal passes (the warning light comes on), it is necessary to apply 12 V to the solenoid drive, observing the polarity (+/-), if the solenoid does not respond, we will replace it.

Volkswagen Passat door

  • The button on the keyboard does not work.

If after pressing one of the buttons on the key there is no reaction (the feeling that the button “falls” when pressed), then the button on the remote control is faulty. To replace the button, you will need a soldering iron with a fine tip, a set of solder (rosin, solder) and a new button. Next, we disassemble the Volkswagen Passat b6 key, remove the non-working button, replace it with a new one, and install the key fob. Below are instructions for disassembling the key fob.

How to disassemble the key "Volkswagen Passat" b6

Let's take a closer look at the case if there is no LED indicator on the key fob and you need to check the battery condition. To do this, you need to analyze the key fob.

Analysis of the Volkswagen Passat b6 key

Instructions for analyzing Volkswagen Passat b6 keys:

  1. There is a button at the top of the key (made of shiny metal), hold it and remove the key body by pulling the ring.
  2. Move the top shiny part away from the button (it won't go past the other one until it clicks.

Next, you need to carefully open the keychain with a two-part knife.

What kind of batteries are used in the Passat b6 key?

The battery in the Passat B6 key uses CR2032 - round, popularly called a “tablet”, lithium, with a voltage of 3V. Used in Volkswagen Passat b6, b7, b8, CC keys.

How to change the battery in a Volkswagen Passat key

After completing all the steps, we have access to the battery; changing it is not difficult: remove the old one, observing the polarity (plus / minus), insert the new one. Reassemble in reverse order.

  5. Find the location where the cover is attached.
  6. Insert a flathead screwdriver into the slot and twist it to open the key fob. There will be a division into 2 parts.
  7. The battery compartment should be on the left and the key on the right.
  8. Open the battery compartment to access the batteries.
  9. Change the battery. To do this, place the new energy source with the positive pole facing down!
  10. Now replace the Volkswagen key fob.

If you are too lazy to do all this yourself, contact your dealer or someone who understands this. If you replace the battery yourself, you may damage the key fob and it will be expensive to repair.
