Any “whims” of windshield wipers not only make any car owner pretty nervous, but also make the very process of participating in road traffic risky, especially during rain.

Consideration of the reasons for possible failures or unsatisfactory operation of the VAZ 21099 wipers should begin with a description of the main actuator - namely the gearmotor, otherwise in the future it will be difficult to describe the principle of changing the operating modes of windshield wipers and methods for diagnosing their malfunctions.

The purifier has three operating modes, they are activated by the right steering column switch. Intermittent mode is provided by an electronic relay type 52.3747 or 525.3747 installed in the mounting block. The relay also turns on the low speed wiper motor when the windshield washer is turned on. The relay must ensure that the electric motor is turned on with a frequency of 14±4 cycles per minute at a gearmotor shaft speed of at least 20 min–1, a temperature of (20±5) °C and a supply voltage of 14±0.2 V.

When the cleaner operates at low speed in constant mode, the supply voltage is supplied to diametrically opposed brushes. When the cleaner operates at maximum speed, “+” power is supplied to the brush located on the side.

It is recommended to replace a faulty gearmotor with a new one (cleaning the commutator, limit switch contacts and replacing gears is possible). Bent levers are straightened. If the hinges are worn out, replace them.

The windshield washer consists of a polyethylene reservoir with an electric pump installed on the right side of the engine compartment, washer nozzles located on the hood, and flexible connecting hoses.

The washer is activated by the right steering column switch, and power is supplied to the pump motor and windshield wiper relay, which turns the wiper on at low speed if it has been turned off or was running intermittently. If the pump malfunctions, it is replaced. Clogged nozzles can be blown in the opposite direction or cleaned with fishing line.

The washer solenoid valve in a vertical position (with the fittings down) should operate at a voltage of no more than 8.5 V. The resistance of its winding at 25 °C should be (95 ± 6) Ohms.

How to remove

First of all, it is necessary to de-energize the system. To do this, simply disconnect the negative terminal on the battery.

  • set the wiper arms to a vertical position;
  • unscrew the nuts and remove them from the rollers;
  • remove protective caps;
  • twist the nuts (one on each side) securing the brackets at the top;
  • dismantle the rubber sealing washers;
  • in the engine compartment, remove the wiring harness from the connector;
  • unscrew the bolts holding the lower part of the bracket;
  • the mechanism rollers are removed from the holes;
  • unscrew the nut securing the windshield wiper crank and remove it;
  • dismantle the bolts holding the wiper gearbox and the motor in place;
  • disconnect the wires from the bimetallic fuse and remove the engine from the bracket.

All that remains is to remove the locking ring and adjusting washers from the gear shaft and install a new motor.
Assembly is carried out in reverse order. To make it more convenient to work, we recommend moving the stove fan slightly to the right. Without this, it will not be possible to remove the windshield wiper. You will also need to remove the fuse box cover and all the relays located there.

The windshield wiper itself must also be moved slightly to the left before removal.

It is better to number the adjusting washers so that they are not confused during assembly.

How to solve a problem?

If you are thinking about how to increase the speed of the VAZ 2114 wipers, then you should look at the root of the problem. And the main reason lies precisely in the motor of the mechanism and the trapezoid of the structure. If you do not pay attention to your wipers for at least a couple of months, then as a result you will notice a decrease in the speed of their operation.

To prevent such a problem, it is necessary to take care of the mechanism in a timely manner, and to take care of it correctly.

To return the structure to the required speed, you will need to disassemble the mechanism, clean the motor, or you can sand it with sandpaper. It is also worth lubricating the hinges that are located between the slats. If such care does not help, then all that remains is to replace the product or take the car to a service center.

The problem is that in the absence of cleaning and smearing, the mechanism quickly becomes unusable, which is why the product may need to be replaced. If we consider more frequent breakdowns, then most often the trapezoid becomes unusable. The hinges may also begin to jam, the slats may become deformed, and problems with the motor are found a little less frequently.

It is necessary to exclude damage to the wiring, which may also be the cause of the problem. If the wires are damaged, then most likely you will have to replace them along with the wipers.

Motor repair

Many people think that replacing the motor with a similar one from a foreign car can solve the problem with the slow operation of the wipers, but in fact, it is often enough just to clean and lubricate the “original” engine.

If the speed of operation causes complaints, then it is necessary to check how easily the armature rotates: if movement is difficult, damage or excessive wear of the brushes should be suspected. They are easy to replace with new ones.

Cleaning the collector will also help - this will require fine sandpaper. The need for this procedure is said:

  • visible contamination;
  • noticeable scratches;
  • grooves on the metal.

It will be necessary to replace the armature or gearbox along with the complete motor if the manifold is too worn or burnt.

Adjusting the operating speed is necessary if the windshield wipers operate too slowly. This is facilitated by:

  • incorrect (too tight) lubrication;
  • gear wear;
  • rod deformation

Methods for connecting windshield wipers.

The connection diagram for windshield wipers can be divided into two types, depending on the method of connecting the operating mode switch.

In the first connection method, a constant plus is supplied to the wiper drive electric motor, and the mode switch connects the motor elements to the minus. This method is widely used in foreign and domestic cars.

The second method is completely opposite to the first, that is, power is supplied to the electric motor through the mode switch, and the minus in this case is taken from the drive housing.

Signs of trouble

The wipers have several types of connection diagrams (see wipers 2109 vase repair). For all these circuits, the following symptoms of malfunctions are noted:

  • When the wipers do not move when you turn on the wipers, there may be a break in the electrical circuit
  • Or the fuse contacts have oxidized (we check it first)
  • There is a malfunction of the switch or the electric motor itself
  • Worm gear may be faulty

Replacing the trapezoid and the wiper motor (windshield wipers)

The design of the trapezoid on VAZ 2109-2108 cars is quite reliable and it is almost never necessary to replace it, or only in exceptional cases. But you will need to remove it if you need to replace the wiper motor. This part fails much more often. Carrying out this repair yourself is quite simple and for this work we will need the following tool:

  • open-end or socket wrench 24
  • socket head 10
  • extension
  • ratchet
  • flat screwdriver

Before proceeding with this repair, it is necessary to remove the windshield wiper arms from the vehicle. Then use a screwdriver to pry up the rubber bands that are put on top of the rods with slots, and remove them as shown in the photo below:

Then unscrew the nuts on both sides:

And we remove the rubber seals underneath them. Then unscrew the nut securing the trapezoid and the motor from the inside, as is clearly demonstrated in the example:

Next, disconnect the plug with the power wires from the motor:

Now all that remains is to slightly insert the splined shafts into the holes in the body in order to free the trapezoid:

And turning this whole structure a little for easy dismantling, we take it out of its place:

If you need to replace the motor, then unscrew it from the main mechanism, and then install all the removed parts in the reverse order. As for the price of these parts, you can buy a trapezoid separately for 1000 rubles and for the same price you can buy the motor itself.

How to install a variable pause wiper relay

Having appreciated all the advantages of a relay with pause adjustment, many motorists are wondering how to install it on their car and is it even possible? There are three ways to add this feature if your vehicle doesn't have it.

Selection of necessary parts from the same machine, but in a more “rich” configuration.

Often on foreign cars in the simplest equipment there is no windshield wiper pause adjustment, but this function appears in other equipment. Most often, it is enough to change the windshield wiper relay and steering column switch, and not necessarily with new ones. You can pick up the necessary parts at a dismantling shop.

On the secondary market, there are quite a lot of ready-made solutions for replacing the standard windshield wiper relay, modified, with the ability to set a pause between sweeps of the blades within a fairly wide range (for example, from 0.5 to 45 seconds). Moreover, the advantages of this solution include the fact that the installation of such a relay is carried out in a standard place and does not require modification of the wiring or alteration of the steering column switches. How to install a variable pause wiper relay

The electric motor consists of a stator with permanent magnets and an armature with an elongated shaft, at the end of which a screw (worm) is threaded. On the worm side there is a commutator and a brush assembly. The brush assembly has three brushes, one negative and two positive, located at different angles relative to the commutator. This arrangement provides different speeds of rotation of the armature, necessary to change the frequency of operation of the purifier.

A gearbox consisting of a helical gear meshing with a worm at the end of the armature shaft is attached to the electric motor on the commutator side. The gear is located on a shaft to which a lever system is attached. On the opposite side of the shaft on the gear there is a cam that actuates a movable contact that ensures that the brushes stop in the extreme position.

Recently, a thermal fuse has also been placed in the gearbox to prevent the electric motor from burning out when the brushes jam or freeze. Previously, this fuse was installed on the wiper frame.

The windshield wiper operating modes are switched using the steering column switch, and its operation in intermittent mode is carried out by the wiper relay.

VAZ 2109 tachometer does not work


The tachometer on the VAZ-2109 was installed only on cars with a high panel, and its connection diagram depended on which engine was installed, carburetor or injection. On “nines” with a carburetor engine, the signal to the tachometer comes from the ignition coil terminal, and in case of abnormal operation, troubleshooting should begin with the ignition coil terminal, to which two wires are screwed. There are cases when they are bent so that they are located next to the central high-voltage wire and in the event of a breakdown, the spark goes to these wires, which causes the tachometer to glitch. A similar picture occurs in the case of oxidation of these contacts. If the tachometer needle moves sharply in one direction or the other, it can be assumed that the culprit of this malfunction will be the switch, which will fail after some time. The tachometer, in fact, is an indicator of malfunctions appearing in the ignition system.

Why doesn't the windshield washer work?

The system for cleaning glass and car headlights includes: a liquid reservoir, a pump, nozzles, tubes, electrical wiring and a power button. Most often, the reason why the windshield washer does not work is a faulty motor or a blown fuse. The operating principle of a windshield washer is quite archaic, so simple diagnostics and simple repairs can be performed almost at the doorstep of the nearest auto parts store.

Malfunctions and operating principles of hand and foot-operated windshield washers, which were installed on some VAZ and AZLK models, deserve a separate topic and will not be discussed in this article.

Causes of failure

  • The windshield washer pump fuse has blown. Manufacturers mark consumers who are protected by fuse links with graphic symbols on the inside of the relay and fuse box cover. If the markings are unclear or the required insert is not marked, a detailed fuse location diagram can be found in the repair and operating manual for your car. Attention! Installing a larger fuse may cause the vehicle to catch fire. If the new fuse-link burns out immediately after installation, there is a short circuit in the circuit.
  • The windshield washer motor is burnt out or soured. The low cost of the pump makes its disassembly and repair impractical, so simply replace it with a new one.
  • The contacts on the connectors have oxidized, the power wires have become frayed or broken. In field conditions, oxides can be removed from the terminals with a sharp object. At the same time, do not damage or bend the terminals so as not to disrupt the quality of contact in the connector.
  • The coarse filter in front of the windshield washer pump is clogged (not installed on all cars). The filter is attached to an O-ring that seals the pump installation location. If trouble catches you on the road and you cannot clean the filter element, temporarily remove it from the line.
  • The hose from the pump to the injectors has fallen off or broken.
  • The injectors are clogged. In winter, injectors can become clogged not only with debris and plaque, but also with ice. After using the windshield wiper, a washer fluid remains on the nozzles, from which the alcohol evaporates over time. The water remaining near the nozzle freezes, which is why the windshield washer does not work. You can pierce the injectors with a thin needle.
  • The fluid in the washer reservoir has frozen.
