How to correctly set timing marks Daewoo Nexia 8 valves

The Daewoo Nexia 8-valve is an improved Opel Cadet. The machine is very popular in many regions of the Russian Federation and other CIS countries. In the period from 1996 to 2002, it was equipped with the G15MF power unit. The timing mechanism drive is driven by a timing belt, which requires careful, timely maintenance.

Most owners replace the timing belt on this car by service station specialists, but some of them perform this operation on their own. Nexia, which has 8 valves in the block head, is a reliable machine, unpretentious in maintenance.

Replacing timing belt Daewoo Nexia 8 valves

The Daewoo Nexia 8 valve timing belt is replaced every 40 thousand kilometers. In addition to the timing belt, it is necessary to replace the timing rollers. Moreover, in Daewoo Nexia after 2008, the water pump (pump) is a direct participant in the timing belt drive. Moreover, the timing belt is tensioned using a pump. If the condition of the pump is in doubt, then it is better to change the water pump (pump) along with the belt.

You should not ignore replacing the belt, because if it breaks, the valves will definitely bend, and this is a rather expensive and serious repair. Below are detailed instructions for replacing timing belts in Daewoo Nexia with photographs.

Replacement timing

Manufacturers recommend replacing worn parts of the timing mechanism drive with a mileage of no more than 50 thousand kilometers. Most owners follow this recommendation, but there are exceptions.

The service life of the belt depends not only on the manufacturer of the spare part, but also on the operating conditions of the vehicle and the technical condition of the engine. The condition of the belt is adversely affected by technical fluids that can get into its operating area. If even the slightest leaks of engine oil are noticed, they are immediately eliminated and the belt is replaced with a new product.

Replacing the timing belt Daewoo Nexia 8 valves

To check the condition of the timing belt, remove the air resonance chamber 2 of the intake tract by loosening the clamp 1 and unscrewing the self-tapping screw 3 securing the chamber to the intake pipe.

Using a 10mm socket, unscrew the four bolts securing the upper front timing drive cover and remove the upper front cover from the rear. See the photo below.

We engage fifth gear in the box and hang out the right front wheel. Rotating the wheel clockwise, rotate the crankshaft and check the condition of the timing belt.

To replace the timing belt, remove the air filter. Remove the drive belt for the generator and power steering pump. Remove the power steering pump pulley and loosen the bolts securing the pump to the cylinder block.

For clarity, we show further operations for replacing the timing belt on a dismantled engine. Using a 10mm socket, unscrew the four bolts securing the upper front timing drive cover and remove the cover.

We dismantle the power steering pump.

Using a high “17” head, turn the crankshaft clockwise by the bolt securing the auxiliary drive pulley. We combine the marks on the camshaft gear pulley with the slot on the rear timing cover of the Daewoo Nexia.

In this case, the mark on the accessory drive pulley (located between the 5th and 6th teeth, counted clockwise from the area without teeth) should be opposite the pointer on the lower front timing drive cover.

Using a high “17” head, unscrew the bolt securing the auxiliary drive pulley. To keep the crankshaft from turning, an assistant must engage fifth gear and press the brake pedal. If you cannot unscrew the pulley mounting bolt due to the crankshaft turning, then lock the flywheel.

We take out the bolt and washer and remove the auxiliary drive pulley. Once again, check that the installation mark on the camshaft timing belt matches the slot on the rear timing cover. When the timing of the valve timing mechanism is correctly set, the mark on the crankshaft timing belt should be located opposite the slot on the rear timing cover of the Daewoo Nexia.

Using a 10mm socket, unscrew the three bolts securing the lower front timing drive cover and remove the cover.

We loosen the tension of the timing belt by turning the spring-loaded movable roller bar with a screwdriver clockwise until the hole in it is aligned with the hole in the roller bracket and insert pins with a diameter of 4.0-4.5 mm into both holes (for example, drill shank or screw).

Remove the belt from the timing pulleys of the camshaft and crankshaft and the coolant pump.

Using a 12mm socket, unscrew the bolt securing the tension roller and remove the roller.

Install the new roller in reverse order.

The need to replace the timing belt appears in the following cases: oil gets on its surface, due to the appearance of cracks, signs of wear and delamination of the belt tissue. And, of course, we remember to replace the timing belt at the end of its service life. True, the concept of “service life” in this case is quite vague. The manufacturer, for example, recommends changing the timing belt after 60,000 miles or 6 years of vehicle operation. For some car enthusiasts, the service life of the belt ends the moment it breaks (fortunately, the valves on Lanos and Nexia 1.5 do not bend). For the rest, the period varies from 30,000 to 90,000 kilometers. And the reasons for this difference are quite obvious. Some, after replacing the timing belt, try to squeeze the maximum out of it and drive more than the factory recommendations. Others play it safe and, given the quality of today's spare parts, carry out a planned replacement ahead of the recommended time. I am one of these others. Since I can agree that a belt installed at the factory can last sixty thousand, but after replacing it, the bar can be lowered a little to 40 - 50 thousand. This is due to both the quality of spare parts and the production and wear of the camshaft, crankshaft and pump gears. But, as they say, this is my subjective opinion, and I do not force anyone to adhere to it. It’s still up to you to decide when it’s best to change the timing belt. We're done with the introduction, let's move on to the main thing...

In order, we select and purchase spare parts necessary for the successful and quick replacement of the timing belt and tension pulley on Daewoo Nexia, Daewoo Lanos cars with an engine capacity of 1.5 . Let's look at the list of necessary purchases for cars with power steering and air conditioning (photo 1): 1. Timing belt (for example, Gates). 2. Timing belt tension roller . It is recommended to change the belt and roller at the same time. The best choice here would be the INNA video. Expensive, but believe me, it's worth it. 3. Alternator belt with power steering size 975-970 and, accordingly, without power steering 875-870. 4. Air conditioning belt . For Daewoo Lanos the belt size is 850, for Daewoo Nexia 825 is better. 5. Air conditioner belt tension roller . As a last resort, if you have difficulties purchasing a roller, you should stock up on a bearing (6-301) for it. It will not be difficult to repress it (photo 2). the pump in this list, although some may not agree with me. But it’s still better to decide on it after the fact - we took it apart, looked at it, found traces of coolant leakage or a humming bearing, and ran to buy a pump. If it’s ok, then we leave it untouched. In extreme cases, a good pump can survive two or three timing belt replacements.

Tools necessary for replacing the timing belt and tension pulley of Daewoo Nexia, Daewoo Lanos : jack, screwdriver, set of socket heads (from 10 to 19), spanners (12, 13, 14, 15). And also, it’s not a bad thing to have in your arsenal a special key for 41 (see photo 3) and a hexagon for 5. You will find out where this key is used a little later. But I can definitely say that it can help you a lot. Using a grinder and a welding machine, you can make this key yourself. The presence of an assistant will be very helpful. There is one point in this matter where you will need his help. I would also like to say that the work can be carried out “on the ground”, but it is better (especially if you are doing this for the first time) in the inspection pit.

Next, a step-by-step description of replacing the timing belt and tension pulley on Daewoo Nexia and Daewoo Lanos cars: 1. We start by removing the air filter housing and the rubber corrugation for supplying air to the throttle valve. 2. Loosen the bolts on the right front wheel. We jack it up and remove the wheel. Remove the plastic engine protection. 3. And don’t waste time, unscrew the fixing nut of the air conditioner belt tension roller (photo 4) and the tension bolt (photo 5). Remove the roller and belt. After that we deal with the alternator belt. In order to remove it, release the bolt (photo 6) and press the generator to the engine. Remove the generator belt.

4. Next, we send an assistant into the car to engage first or reverse gear and press the brake pedal. And at this time you will try to unscrew the crankshaft pulley mounting bolt (photo 7). If the crankshaft pulley bolt does not want to unscrew properly, then read this article, which describes in detail how to deal with it. 5. Remove the power steering hydraulic pulley (photo 8).

6. Unscrew the three bolts of the upper part of the timing belt casing (photo 9) and the two bolts securing the power steering pump to the engine (photo 10). Remove the lower part of the timing belt casing (photo 11).

7. Next, you should set the engine according to the marks. To do this, engage 4th or 5th gear, put on the wheel (just attach two bolts) and turn it. We control the coincidence of the marks on the crankshaft and camshaft gears (see photos 12 and 13).

8. If you are not going to change the timing belt tensioning roller, then, overcoming the resistance of the roller spring, align the two holes and insert a metal pin (photo 14). In other cases, simply unscrew the roller mounting bolt (photo 15) and remove it and the belt. This pin can be immediately installed on the new roller and installed in this position. If there is a power steering pump, you will have to tinker a little. You will have to both remove and put on the timing belt by tucking it under the pump (photo 16). Don't forget to check the condition of the pump and replace it if necessary.

9. Install the roller. We fill and install the timing belt. We pull out the pin and look at the position of the pointer on the tension roller. A perfect match is shown in photo 17. But this happens quite rarely. And in order to achieve this position, you will have to adjust the position of the pump. Use a 5mm hex to loosen the three bolts securing the pump (if you have installed the pump, this will make things easier, just don’t tighten the bolts all the way). We place a container under the engine, as coolant may leak. Install the roller and timing belt. Using a special 41 key, turn the pump (photo 18) until the marks on the tension roller match. We tighten the pump bolts, with the roller and belt installed, this is more difficult to do (one bolt is very inconvenient), but we can do it.

10. After which, again, we turn the engine two revolutions by the wheel and check that the marks on the crankshaft and camshaft gears match.

If everything is ok, then we carry out the assembly in the reverse order. If necessary, add coolant. We tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt with a force of 95 Nm, after which we also turn (tighten) the bolt by 30° and 15 ° (the tightening torque of the crankshaft pulley bolt of Daewoo Lanos and Daewoo Nexia). We keep the crankshaft from turning by engaging 1st gear and pressing the brake pedal or using a screwdriver.

Why are timing marks needed?

The timing marks are marks along which the timing belt is adjusted, as well as the drive belt is replaced. This element is quite important because it directly affects the operation of the power unit.

What happens if, when replacing a belt, you set the marks incorrectly or don’t set them at all? In this case, you can knock down the gas distribution mechanism, which will lead to many problems. Namely:

  • Since the gas distribution has been disrupted, the injection and release of exhaust gases will be carried out incorrectly. Subsequently, the engine may start to stall, stall, fail to start, or consumption may increase. In turn, this can lead to consequences, such as increased wear, burnout of the valve mechanism and piston group, and others.
  • Everyone remembers what happens when the timing belt breaks - valve bending. This happens because the gas distribution process is disrupted and the pistons hit the valves, which are subsequently deformed. The exact same principle works in this case. A broken timing mechanism will cause the piston group to fight against the valves, which will simply deform them.
  • Shifting the timing mark when changing a belt or adjusting will result in fuel being injected too early or too late. The consequence of this may be flooding of the spark plugs or suction of exhaust gases into the combustion chamber.

Let's sum it up

Taking into account the above information, it becomes clear that replacing the timing belt of the Daewoo Nexia, or rather the timing belt, is a mandatory and responsible procedure. At the same time, it is important to change the belt not only according to the regulations, but also to take into account certain factors that can shorten its service life.

One way or another, if necessary, work on replacing the timing belt on a Daewoo Nexia can be done with your own hands in a regular garage. Of course, certain skills will be required (it is important to be able to correctly set timing marks, drain and refill antifreeze if necessary, replace the pump, etc.).

We also recommend reading the article about which is better, a timing chain or a timing belt. From this article you will learn what advantages and disadvantages the specified types of timing mechanism drive have, as well as what subtleties and nuances need to be taken into account when selecting a car and internal combustion engine with one or another type of timing mechanism drive. However, having the necessary set of tools on hand, replacing the belt and other elements can be completed independently, which will significantly save money. Finally, we note once again that when replacing the timing belt on a Nexia or any other car, you also need to pay attention to: the condition of the tension roller, pump, seals on the crankshaft and camshaft.

If it has been determined that any element needs to be replaced or replacement will be required soon, in parallel with replacing the timing belt, additional work should be carried out to replace worn or failed elements.

Ignoring this rule for complex replacement may cause the old roller to jam, as a result of which the new belt will still be torn off with all the ensuing consequences.

How to set tags

Setting the timing marks is quite simple. Let's consider the sequence of actions:

We stop the car at the inspection hole. We go down into the pit and dismantle the right side of the engine crankcase protection.

First you need to remove the timing belt protective cover. To do this, unscrew the mounting bolts. Of course, the easiest way is to do this with the engine removed, but if you only need to replace the belt and roller, then it is not advisable to dismantle the entire power unit.

Remove the accessory belt.

Remove the accessory belt.

We remove the power steering pump pulley (it is held on by 3 bolts) if the car is equipped with a power steering. Dismantle the upper part of the timing belt protective casing.

Unscrew the crankshaft pulley. You should first ask an assistant to depress the brake pedal.

Rotate the crankshaft pulley until the marks on the pulley and the housing coincide. Additionally, we control the position of the marks on the camshaft pulley. On a Daewoo Nexia with a 16-valve engine, the marks on the camshaft pulleys should face each other.

The mark on the accessory drive pulley must also match the mark on the cylinder block. The camshaft pulley is secured against rotation, and subsequent operations are performed.

We loosen the timing belt tension using the eccentric on the water pump. The eccentric is turned with a special key to 41.

  • This is how the timing marks are set easily and simply.

Replacement procedure

Replacing the timing belt on a Daewoo Nexia 8 valves is a mandatory procedure. Many owners prefer to perform this operation in specialized centers, but it can be performed independently. If you have even a little experience in repairing or servicing a machine, you can get to work. This operation does not involve the use of special equipment or unique tools. The venue can be a garage with an inspection pit.

When choosing spare parts to replace worn timing drive parts, you should pay attention to the quality of their manufacture. In retail chains you can find fairly high-quality fakes that look no different from brands, but last much less.

In addition, the work will need:

Before starting work on replacing the timing belt, the car should be placed on the selected site, the handbrake should be applied, and fifth gear should be engaged. Work begins in the engine compartment, where the battery terminals are disconnected. The next step is to dismantle the air filter housing and all the pipes that are attached to it.

To continue work, remove the alternator drive belt. To do this, lower the wheel bolts on the right front wheel, and install wheel chocks under the rear wheels. The car is lifted with a car jack, the body is lowered onto a stand, and the right front wheel is removed.

Next, the algorithm for performing the work will be as follows:

Alignment marks

Efficient operation of the power unit is only possible with correct valve timing. To do this, you should set marks in the timing drive of the Daewoo Nexia. They are located on the camshaft and crankshaft pulleys.

There is a recess in the upper part of the timing drive protective cover.

It should coincide with the notch on the camshaft pulley.

There is also a recess in the lower part of the protective cover, which should coincide with the mark on the crankshaft pulley. If they match, work can continue.

Correct tension

After installing the new belt in its place, you should remove the tension roller lock, it will tension the belt. The marks on the roller body must match. If the belt is not tightened enough, you can correct the position by moving the coolant pump. A little antifreeze will spill, which is then topped up.

Tools and accessories

There is one peculiarity: the belt is tensioned by a pump and for this we need a special key for 41.

Actually, the key itself and the pump.

The price of the issue is 500 rubles, but if the replacement is a single one, then you can make it yourself by cutting it out of a sheet of metal 1 - 2 mm thick and bending the handle at an angle of 45 degrees. It won’t be very convenient, but you can tighten the belt with such a key, check it yourself.

I apologize for the quality of the photo; my partner’s hands were shaking with excitement.

About belt wear and life

The main reason for belt breakage is wear and tear of the product during operation. If you do not perform diagnostic procedures, this will definitely happen. Over time, the rubber loses its elasticity and resilience, cracks or bulges appear on the surface of the belt, and the ends become frayed. Also, jamming of the tension roller or camshafts can cause the drive to break.

The manufacturer of Daewoo Nexia says that the belt needs to be changed after 50,000 km. Of course, this may actually be the case, but it’s still better to focus not on mileage, but on the actual condition of the belt drive. And in order not to miss the beginning of its end, you need to look under the hood more often.

Now, if you decide to make the repairs yourself, let's talk about how to do it quickly and efficiently. Here is a list of tools that we will need for work:

  • jack;
  • socket wrenches;
  • spanners;
  • screwdrivers with different tips;
  • hexagon;
  • new belt drive kit.

Advice: it is better to buy consumables from trusted manufacturers, since a low-quality drive will quickly fail.

Step-by-step instruction

We remove the air intake pipes, the air filter housing and everything connected to them. This is the picture we get.

Unscrew the bolts securing the protective timing cover and remove it. We also loosen the bolts securing the power steering pulley. So that he doesn’t swear later trying to stop him.

Loosen the generator mounting bolt, move it towards the engine and remove the generator belt.

How to replace a belt with your own hands?

Changing the timing belt on a Daewoo Nexia 16 valve is carried out by specialists at a service station or independently. It is better to carry out work yourself on a 16 cl engine if you have experience. If you haven't faced this challenge before, the change can be challenging. Material about the replacement of the product was filmed and published by Alexey Zakharov.

Required Tools

If we change the product with our own hands, then we prepare the following tool:

Timing belt selection

To prevent the product from wearing out quickly, you cannot save on buying a strap. The modern consumables market offers consumers many types of timing belts. Today, the best options for Daewoo Nexia 16 valves are:

Just keep in mind that cheap straps usually wear out and break faster.

If you decide to change the timing belt, evaluate the condition of the rollers. If they are worn out and there is damage on the body, these parts must also be replaced.

Algorithm of actions

Below we will tell you in detail how to properly change the product yourself.

Removing the old belt

To change the product, it must first be removed. Replacing the timing belt of Daewoo Nexia 16 valves is performed as follows:

Detailed instructions for replacing the product yourself are presented in the video filmed by Sergei Kapitanchuk.

Installation and tension

How to properly install and tension the product:

Installing a new timing belt

We put the protective cover in place, screw it and the tension roller. We install the camshaft pulley and align the marks, if they do not match, we also check the crankshaft marks. Then we install a new timing belt so that the descending branch of the belt is tensioned. The principle is this: first we put it on the crankshaft, pump and tension roller. Then we turn the camshaft pulley a few degrees clockwise, put a belt on it and return it back. It turns out that the right branch of the belt is tense, and the left is free.

Be sure to place the belt in the direction of rotation,

There is a special mark on the belt, unfortunately we didn’t take a photo here, but you can see it in the article about Logan.

Using a special wrench, turn the pump until the arrow on the tension roller is against the groove and tighten it.

We check all the marks again. If everything is normal, install the lower casing and crankshaft pulley, tighten it in the same way as you unscrewed it. We turn the crankshaft twice and check the marks.

We screw back everything that was unscrewed and put everything that was removed in the reverse order of removal. Tension the generator belt. Fill with antifreeze. We start the car and accept congratulations from family and friends.

Overall the car is quite good. The front suspension couldn't be simpler, two silent blocks and a ball, which is very difficult to kill. Engines last 300,000 without problems. He does not have a high appetite. The only thing is that there are several congenital electrical defects, and the body rots if not treated. But otherwise, for the money it’s worth, it’s a perfectly acceptable option. These were discussions on a free topic.

What you need for work

In addition to the standard set of tools (screwdrivers, jack, cylinder head, sockets, wrenches), you need to purchase a special wrench for 41. It costs about five hundred rubles. It would also be a good idea to have a universal pulley holder.

If you plan to replace the timing belt on a 16-valve Nexia (1.6), in addition to the belt itself, you will need a bypass and tension pulley. These elements must be changed. If necessary, the pump should also be replaced. Its resource, of course, is more than 60 thousand km, but if there are characteristic signs (antifreeze leakage, noise when the impeller rotates, and so on), it should also be replaced.

Which belt to buy

Not only the efficiency of the engine, but also its service life depends on the correct choice of engine components. This fully applies to the choice of timing belt for the Daewoo Nexia engine. The Nexia 16 cl timing belt kit includes not only a toothed belt, it also includes idler rollers and oil seals. In some cases, the pump in the engine cooling system is changed at the same time. After a long run, the pulleys on the camshafts and crankshaft wear out and are also replaced.

Experts recommend using kits from the following manufacturers:

  1. Bosch.
  2. Dongil.
  3. Gates.

Timing belt Bosh 1 987 949 194 Engine code-15SMS
When giving preference to one or another manufacturer, you should pay attention to the quality of the product offered. In automobile markets you can buy a fake that is very similar to a branded product. You should also be wary of the cost of the product. A quality product cannot have a low price. Having received some savings on spare parts, you can spend a significant amount on engine repairs.

Necessary tool

We definitely change the pump because the belt is tensioned by it and as soon as we touch it the o-ring will definitely leak. To replace it, we will need a special key for 41. Its price is a little more than a thousand rubles, but if the procedure is one-time, it can be made from metal 1 mm thick and bent as in the photo. One time is enough.

As well as a universal pulley holder, the tool is not required, but it is more convenient with it.

First of all, we buy everything you need: pump, belt, tension and idler pulley.

In Nexia, the engine under the hood occupies almost all the space and this promises us some difficulties. It is very inconvenient to unscrew the front engine mount, but putting it back in place is even more fun. I always remember several times the mother of the Uzbeks who installed this engine like that.
