A significant part of the repair work on cars, especially those received after road accidents, falls on body repairs. In most cases, repairs require checking the geometry of the attachment points of components and assemblies of the vehicle chassis. The main reference dimensions for checking are shown in Fig. 8–4.

Damage to car body can be very different. Therefore, the repair rules in each individual case must be different, most suitable for these damages, and it is necessary to make maximum use of the possibilities of straightening damaged panels. If possible, it is necessary to avoid thermal effects on the metal so as not to disrupt the factory welding and anti-corrosion protection of the body. Remove the front body panels only in extreme cases, to determine the location of damage, straighten or align the body.

In cases of significant body damage, it is recommended to remove all interior trim to facilitate measurement, inspection and installation of hydraulic and screw jacks to correct distortion and damage to the body.

Protrusion of the front surfaces and removable parts relative to adjacent panels is eliminated by fitting and adjusting them.

Repair of deformed surfaces of parts

Repair of damaged body parts is carried out by drawing, straightening, straightening with metal shrinkage, cutting out areas that cannot be repaired, making repair inserts from rejected body parts or sheet metal and giving them the shape of the part being restored.

Deformed areas of panels are straightened, as a rule, manually using special tools (metal, plastic, wooden hammers and various mandrels) and devices.

Straightening with heating is used for upsetting (pulling) highly stretched surfaces of panels. To prevent sudden swelling and deterioration of mechanical properties, the panels are heated to 600–650 C (cherry-red color). The diameter of the heated spot should be no more than 20–30 mm.

Tighten the surfaces as follows:

– using a carbon electrode of a semi-automatic welding machine or a gas torch, heat the metal from the periphery to the center of the defective area and, with blows of a wooden mallet and hammer, knock down the heated areas using a flat support or an anvil;

– repeat the heating and settling operations until the required panel surface is obtained.

Unevenness in panels can be smoothed out using polyester putties, thermoplastics, cold-curing epoxy mastics and solder.

Polyester putties such as “Chempropol-P” or “PE-0085” form reliable connections with panels that have been stripped to metal. They are two-component materials: an unsaturated polyester resin and a hardener, which is a catalyst for the rapid hardening of the mixture. The temperature in the workroom should not be lower than 18 C. The prepared polyester putty must be used in no more than 10 minutes. It completely hardens 60 minutes after application. The thickness of the putty layer should not exceed 2 mm.

How to make a screed:

  1. We heat the metal from the edge to the center of the damaged part using a gas stove or a semi-automatic welding machine with a carbon electrode. When the area heats up, we begin to bring it down with a wooden hammer. When doing this, use a flat stand.
  2. We repeat this operation several times until the required surface is obtained.
  3. You may not line up without flaws right away, but don't despair. These defects can be hidden using putty, thermoplastic or epoxy putty.

  1. There should be 4.265 meters between the extreme points of the front bumper and the rear bumper.
  2. The distance between the center of the front wheel and the center of the corresponding rear wheel is 2.492 meters.
  3. The distance from the center of the front wheel to the end point of the front bumper is 0.829 meters.
  4. The distance from the center of the rear wheel to the end point of the rear bumper should be 0.944 meters.

Doors

It is also recommended to disassemble them and replace them with an assistant. If electrical equipment is attached to them, then the wires must be removed without fail. This is how the doors on a VAZ 2110 are disassembled:

  • The 2 bolts connecting the door to the A-pillar are disconnected;
  • The door opens;
  • The new door is installed in the reverse order.
  • The bolts securing the upper and lower hinges are turned;

Advice. Before the bolted hinges are fully tightened, the door must be slammed shut and adjusted to even out the gaps in the openings along the entire edge. Then you will need to open the door with decorations and tighten the latches all the way. It is advisable to double-check everything. Width

  1. The distance between the end points of the side mirrors is 1875 mm.
  2. The distance between the front end points of the car (excluding side mirrors) is 1680 mm.
  3. The distance from the center of the right front wheel to the center of the left is 1400 mm.
  4. The distance from the center of the right rear wheel to the center of the left is 1370 mm.

When measuring the body geometry, remember that the body geometry of the VAZ 2112 differs in many places from the VAZ 2110.

Bumpers

These elements of the VAZ 2110 body are disassembled not only for the purpose of replacement or repair, but more often for the purpose of modernization and tuning:

  • The negative terminal is removed from the battery;
  • The radiator grille has been removed.

  • Using head 8, unscrew the bolts securing the bumper to the brackets;
  • The bolts securing the bumper to the front panel are unscrewed with a 10mm socket;

  • Using a curved screwdriver, unscrew the screws, fixing the wing skin on the top and bottom sides;
  • Now you need to loosen the fastenings of the power unit protection. This is where a 10mm socket wrench comes in handy;

The rear bumper is removed in almost the same way as the front.

Geometry check

Here are four main types of measurements that will allow you to make sure that the car has not been in an accident and has the parameters you need:

  1. Reconciliation of diagonals. Before proceeding with detailed calculations, you should make two simple measurements that will immediately identify the problem. The car needs to be measured diagonally on both sides. If the measurement results coincide (with an accuracy of a millimeter), this will mean that the body as a whole has the correct shape. But we should not stop at these two dimensions.
  2. Checking the height of the racks. To take this measurement, you need to measure the height of the racks in four places. It is important to take measurements from the front and rear, as well as from both sides of the machine. The four indicators must match.
  3. Identification of a distorted roof plane. To find out if your car's lid is in place, take measurements from the door diagonals. You need to measure from the bottom rear corner of the door to the top front corner, and vice versa. If the indicators coincide on both sides, good. Just in case, it’s worth checking the roof diagonals.

What putties should I use?

I recommend using “Chempropol-P”, it consists of two components: saturated polyester resin and hardener. This putty adheres well to panels. Such work must be carried out at temperatures above 19 C. The putty must be applied very quickly, since after 10 minutes it begins to harden. After an hour, the putty will completely harden. And the moment! The layer of polyester putty should not exceed 2 millimeters. By the way, if you don’t find this putty, you can still use “PE-0085”; it is very similar in composition and quality.

The VAZ 2112 or “two-piece” car was produced, like its analogues, at the Volzhsky Automobile Plant. It is a 5-door hatchback body, reminiscent of the VAZ 2110 sedan in shape.

The VAZ-2111 comes off the assembly line in three types: the basic VAZ-2111 (engine with a fuel injection system), VAZ-21111 (engine with a carburetor) and VAZ-21113 (equipped with a 16-valve engine, 14-inch wheels).

The basic VAZ-2111 had a sedan version, labeled as VAZ-21102. It had a VAZ-2111 engine, the volume of which was 1.5 liters. The VAZ-21113 has a 16-valve VAZ-2112 engine and a modernized brake system (similar to the VAZ-21103 sedan).

A modification of the eleventh model VAZ-2111-90 (Tarzan 2) is a powerful all-wheel drive off-road vehicle. The engine, transmission and chassis in it correspond to the VAZ-21213 model.

The VAZ-2111 has three types of standard equipment: standard, norm and luxury, labeled as VAZ-21110-00 (standard) and VAZ-21113-00 (standard), VAZ-21110-01 (norm) and VAZ-21113-01 (standard), VAZ-21110-02 (luxury) and VAZ-21113-02 (luxury).

Results

Although the VAZ-2112 car has not been produced for a long time, it can be seen quite often on the streets of many cities in the post-Soviet space. The car was able to prove itself well, especially at the beginning of production. Many even mistook this hatchback for a foreign car. Even today, the car does not have such a rough design as, for example, the “nine” or similar cars, and even looks modern.

If the driver does not leave his car unattended, it will look good. “Dvenashka” received an average ground clearance, front-wheel drive, a more or less good interior and a spacious trunk. It is clear that the model cannot compete with foreign cars, but for its price it is the best option.

It is especially suitable for tuning lovers, as it has a lot of opportunities for improving the appearance, interior and technical parts. It will not be possible to avoid a poor-quality interior and low level of noise insulation. Also inside, especially in the back row, there is not enough free space. Creaking sounds will constantly accompany the driver on the road.

The power of the power plants is not always enough; the lack of power is mainly felt when overtaking. But the engine can be called quite economical, even in urban areas. The VAZ 2112, although not an ideal car, is good for a first car, as it has a low cost on the secondary market, low price tags for spare parts and is easy to repair.
