The 2111 engine available in the AvtoVAZ manufacturer’s line did not meet the Euro-3 environmental standards existing at that time. Work progress:
- We drive the car onto an overpass or inspection hole.
- We install a prepared container for used oil under the engine.
- Unscrew the oil filler plug.
- Next, use a 17 key to unscrew the drain plug on the engine crankcase and completely drain the used oil.
- Unscrew the oil filter by hand or with a puller.

Ideally, this procedure should be done on a warm engine. The oil will drain much faster.
So, a general view of the engine:
Unscrew the plug from the filler neck.
Using a 17 key, unscrew the drain plug on the engine crankcase, prepare in advance a container where we plan to drain the oil, a volume of 4 liters or more.
Next, use a puller (if available) to unscrew the oil filter from the engine block:

Before screwing on the new filter, be sure to fill it with oil and lubricate the rubber gasket with oil.

Screw the filter by hand with force but without using additional tools.
After pouring new oil into the engine through the oil filler neck, wait at least 10 minutes for the oil to drain and check the oil level with a dipstick; the oil should be halfway between the minimum and maximum marks.

Before changing the oil yourself, let’s decide whether it’s worth changing it or whether it’s too early, what kind of oil is best to buy and whether to change the filter.
How can you tell when your engine oil needs to be changed?
As a responsible driver, you of course check your engine oil level regularly. If not, you will have to do this, since the suitability of the oil is determined by the oil dipstick. You need to remove the oil dipstick from the engine and look at the oil level. If the oil is dark in color - black or gray - then it needs to be changed. Normal fresh oil has a yellow, almost transparent color, so that it is barely visible on the dipstick after filling. It happens that the oil level quickly drops or rises sharply. What does this mean:
- If the oil level in the engine drops, this means that the piston rings are deteriorating and the engine is “consuming” oil. The piston engine needs repair.
- If there is more and more oil in the engine, you should pay attention to the smell of the oil. It may smell like gasoline. Another option is that there is more oil due to a damaged cooling jacket.
- In both cases, it is necessary to contact a service station for engine repair. The cost of repairs is high these days, but sooner is better than later.
What is the best engine oil to use for VAZ 2111?
There are few options - only three. These are mineral water, semi-synthetic and full synthetic. Now let's decide which oil is suitable for the VAZ 2111 car and for what purposes:
- Mineral motor oil. Let's say right away that it is not suitable for our car. Price is its only advantage over other oils. But its quality is absolutely unsuitable for such engines. If it is still permissible to pour it into the classics, then in a particular case it is better to abstain.
- Semi-synthetic motor oil. In principle, it is suitable for cars of the 2110 family. Semi-synthetics are widely used, since they are not very expensive and at the same time have good performance indicators. It protects engine parts well, lubricates and cools with a bang. The best option!
- Synthetic motor oil. There are several important points here. In general, there is no need to pour it into a VAZ 2111. Because it is not advisable to pour expensive oil into such an engine, especially if semi-synthetic oil does the job perfectly.
- On the other hand, if you are building a racing car from your VAZ 2111 or 2110, 2112 - it doesn’t matter, then synthetics will still be better. Racing cars operate at higher speeds and temperatures, and synthetic oil is the best choice for them.

The new VAZ engine is most correctly called “a new modification of the engine.” It uses a new “high” thick-walled cylinder block (popularly called “Kalinovsky”) with additional stiffeners and painted blue. A new crankshaft was used, unified for 2111 and 2112 with a stroke of 75.6. If the belt breaks on this modification of the engine, according to the statement, with the piston. Where does the oil go on new engines?
Replacement
The oil pump is removed during repairs if the oil pressure in the lubrication system decreases and if oil leaks through the sealing gasket. So, in this article we will look at how to change the oil pump on VAZ 2110-2112 cars. To work, we will need all the tools necessary to remove the timing belt and engine oil sump, as well as a 10mm wrench.
Let's go in order:
- The first thing to do is remove the timing belt
- Next, drain the oil from the engine.
- After this, remove the crankshaft timing belt and its key. You can read about how to remove the crankshaft timing belt here.
- Remove the lower cover of the clutch housing: using a 10mm wrench, unscrew the 3 bolts securing the lower cover of the clutch housing and remove the cover (more details here)
- We remove the oil intake: using a 10mm wrench, you need to unscrew the 2 bolts with which the oil intake is attached to the main bearing cover, and one bolt securing the oil intake to the oil pump body, then you need to remove the oil intake, removing the tube from the oil pump channel.
- Clean the oil receiver mesh with white spirit. If the mesh is damaged or cannot be cleaned, it must be replaced with a new one.
- Now it's time to remove the oil pump itself. Using a 10mm socket wrench, unscrew the 6 bolts securing the pump to the cylinder block and remove the pump.

At its core, the engine is a redesigned modification of the well-known 21083 unit, which appeared on the legendary G8. The processing affected, first of all, the food system. Instead of a carburetor system, the engine began to be equipped with an injection system. The design of the connecting rod and camshaft also received changes. All this made it possible to improve technical characteristics. Power and torque have increased. In addition, the engine began to comply with Euro-2 environmental standards.

Typical problems
Floating idle speed most often occurs due to malfunction of the following components:
- Idle air control;
- Throttle position sensor;
- Vacuum booster.
If the existing symptoms are supplemented by the fact that the engine stalls while driving, then you should also pay attention to the condition of the mass air flow sensor (MAF).
If the engine begins to run unevenly and “triple”, then first of all you should pay attention to the compression indicators. Noticeably lower compression in one of the cylinders most likely indicates a burnt out valve. If the spread is small or exists in several cylinders, then the valve clearances should be checked. There is a high probability that they require adjustment. A similar symptom may also indicate problems with the gasket between the cylinder head and the cylinder block. However, even if such symptoms are not observed, do not forget to regularly check the thermal clearances of the valves, as well as adjust them. The manufacturer recommends performing this check every 20 thousand km. If everything is fine with compression, but there are similar symptoms, you need to check the ignition module.
Often noises and knocks become companions of this motor. All of this can be caused by out-of-adjustment valves. If you experience an increasing loud, dull metallic sound when you press the gas pedal, the engine will most likely need to be repaired. There are several main reasons for this symptom:
- Knock of main bearings;
- Knock of connecting rod bearings;
- Knock of pistons.
The operating coolant temperature range for this unit is 95-103 degrees. However, there are often cases when the engine simply does not heat up to such levels. The main reason for this behavior of the motor is a malfunction of the thermostat. Some owners have to replace it almost on a regular basis. All this is a consequence of the low quality of spare parts.
Other common malfunctions of this engine
- Valve cover leaks;
- Wear of cooling system components;
- Failures of the injection system on old copies;
- Breaking off the fastenings of the exhaust exhaust pipe (can be treated by replacing the steel threaded connections with brass ones).

Step by step replacement
1. Warm up the engine and unscrew the filler cap.
2. Place the dishes and unscrew the drain bolt.
3. After draining the oil, tighten the bolt.
4. Using a special wrench, unscrew the oil filter. Usually we tear off the special. key and unscrew it by hand.
5. Pour oil into the filter. Fill intermittently so that the oil saturates the filter element.
Do not fill the filter completely; when tightening it, you will spill some of the oil.
6. Screw on the filter and tighten it by hand.
7. Fill in the oil and check the level using the dipstick.
You need to fill in 3.2-3.3 liters, and then look at the dipstick. If necessary, add.

Advantages and disadvantages
Since the 21114 motor is already an improved version of the 2111, there are no obvious shortcomings here. The main “diseases” of internal combustion engines are:
- intense heating of the pistons - there are no special nozzles for oil cooling; they will appear only in later versions of the manufacturer;
- cylinder head – not suitable for other engines

Remember! The oil change is carried out on a warm engine. The most convenient way to do the work is on a viewing hole or overpass.
Drain
So:
- The engine guard, which comes from the factory, has a slot for draining the oil. If this is not available, the engine protection should be removed while changing the oil.
- So, let's take a container for oil. For containers, an old bucket or a cut-off 5-liter bottle, some kind of basin, or whatever is on hand and doesn’t mind will do.
- Using a 17 key, unscrew the drain plug, which is located in the engine sump, but not completely.
- We place a container for oil under the hole. We wear rubber gloves, as the oil can burn your hands.
- Unscrew the plug and drain the oil.
- When the oil has drained (about 5 minutes), you can screw the drain plug back in.
- Then wipe the area around the drain plug with a rag (rag) to make it easier to detect a possible leak.
This completes the oil drain.
Washing (if you decide to do so)
Engine flushing is not usually done. But:
- If the type of oil in the car engine changes (from mineral water to synthetic, from semi-synthetic to synthetic);
- If the car has been standing for a long time;
- If the oil has not been changed for a very long time.
In these cases, it is advisable to flush the engine. You need to use special flushing oil. Rinse according to instructions. This is usually done like this:
- Flushing oil is poured through the filler neck in the cylinder head cover.
- The engine starts for a few minutes.

Replacing the oil filter
After draining and washing, it is necessary to replace the oil filter, which is done as follows:
- To remove the old filter, you need to crawl under the car. If you manage to find a hole, it won’t be difficult.
- The oil filter on a VAZ 2111 is located at the rear of the engine opposite cylinder 1.
- The filter is quite easy to remove. There are several ways to remove it.
- The first way is by hand. The simplest one is to use rubber gloves (to prevent your hands from slipping) or use a rag to unscrew the filter and remove it.
- If that doesn't work, you can use a special filter puller. We use it to clamp the filter, tear it out of place, and then you can usually twist it by hand.
- If this option does not work, then you need to pierce the filter through with a long screwdriver and unscrew it.
- The seat for the oil filter must be cleaned of any remnants of the old rubber gasket.
- You need to pour a little oil into the new filter, and also lubricate the rubber O-ring with oil.
- After which the filter is screwed back on. The filter should only be screwed in by hand.
Now you can add fresh oil.
Filling oil
So:
- The filler plug in the head cover is unscrewed.
- For greater convenience, a watering can is inserted into the neck.
- Oil is poured.
- The oil level must be monitored during the filling process. Control is carried out using an oil dipstick. The oil level should be midway between the minimum and maximum marks.
- After reaching the required engine oil level, tighten the filler plug.
Cylinder block
Cylinder block 21114 is cast from high-strength cast iron. It has its own block with an increased height, but the mounting holes for attaching the block head are made with M12x1.25 mm thread.

Recommendations for choosing spare parts
So:
- The oil pump usually does not cause car owners much trouble, since it has a service life of at least 120 thousand kilometers. However, no one is immune from breakdowns
- If suddenly you still need to replace the oil pump on a VAZ 2112, it is better to take original spare parts and not save
- Among the well-known suppliers of parts for VAZ cars, the official one is the Tolyatti Automobile Assemblies Plant (TZA for short).

Helpful advice: To avoid serious consequences for the car and major engine repairs, it is important to monitor the indicators on the dashboard. If the oil pressure lamp flashes at idle speed, and replacing it does not solve the problem, the lamp lights up again - this means there is a breakdown
When the warning light suddenly comes on and the performance of your car’s engine is alarming, it is recommended to turn off the ignition and call a tow truck to a repair station. This will save money on subsequent engine repairs (continuing to drive the car under its own power in such a situation, you risk serious damage to the engine).
- Typically, removing the oil pump on any car occurs when disassembling the engine.
- Only if necessary, this work is carried out on the car without removing the engine from it.
- Before starting this procedure, first drive the car into the inspection hole.
- And immediately purchase everything you need to carry out a full replacement, as shown in Photo No. 2.

Attention: The pumps of the VAZ 2108-1011010 and 2111, 2112-1011010 engines are almost the same, with the exception of point No. 5 - the sensor mounting bracket is different, do not miss this point! Advice: It is recommended to install only a factory-produced gasket under the pump, since a non-standard gasket may have a thickness that does not meet the specifications and cause problems with the operation of the pump.
Piston
The engine uses pistons from 2110 with deep recesses for the valves, which eliminates the possibility of the valves coming into contact with the piston if the timing belt breaks, i.e. the 21114 engine does not bend the valves.

The piston pin is steel, hollow, floating type. The outer diameter of the piston pin 21114 is 22 mm, the length of the pin is 60.5 mm.
Why is an oil pump needed?
The oil pump in the engine is designed to build up pressure in the oil system, for the necessary lubricating effect of all rubbing parts of the internal combustion engine. If the pressure in the system is insufficient, the lubrication effect will be ineffective, which in turn will lead to the engine being unsuitable for operation. In this case, the low oil pressure warning light on the instrument panel should light up. Therefore, you should not delay repairing the oil pump. You are left with two options. Take the car to a service station and lose a lot of time and money, or change the oil pump yourself.
Which cars were included in the package?
Traditionally, for the VAZ company, the 21114 engine was installed on the entire line of cars produced at the time of its inception:
- 21101 – four-door sedan;
- 21112 – five-door station wagon;
- 2113 – three-door hatchback;
- 2114 – five-door hatchback;
- 2115 – four-door sedan;
- Kalina (1st generation) – sedan, station wagon;
- Granta - sedan, liftback.
Improved engine characteristics significantly increased the service life of the “ten” and the Lada Samara-2 series.
Tuning
- The easiest way to increase the power of a VAZ 21114 engine is to install a new lightweight camshaft, split gear and adjust the valve timing accordingly. This allows you to get an engine power of about 90 horsepower. Among other things, the behavior of the power unit at high speeds is improved.
- Maximum performance can be achieved by replacing the exhaust manifold, modifying the cylinder head and installing lightweight valves. In this case, the engine will produce about 115 horsepower.
- Further tuning is possible only with the installation of a compressor and turbocharging. However, in this case, the life of the engine is significantly reduced, which may require major repairs literally after 50,000 kilometers.
