Checking and changing the oil in the Peugeot 307 automatic transmission yourself

“Peugeot 307” is a reliable car from the French concern, which has gained popularity due to its reliability and unpretentiousness: you can safely carry out maintenance yourself, for example, change the oil in the Peugeot 307 automatic transmission.

The car is equipped with a 4-speed AL4/DPO automatic transmission manufactured by PSA Group. The automatic transmission was released back in 1998, installed on vehicles with a volume of 1.4-2.0 liters. The automatic transmission is controlled by an electronic computer system; the maximum torque characteristic for this automatic transmission is 210 Nm.

How often should I change

Changing the oil in the automatic transmission of a Peugeot 307 is a crucial period that must be remembered. The concern reports in the operating manual that it is fully designed for the entire operation of the vehicle. However, service station specialists advise starting to prepare for replacement when the car has traveled 30 thousand km.

There are two types of ATF replacement:

  1. Complete replacement;
  2. Partial change.

With low mileage, a partial replacement is performed; after two or three procedures, a complete change is performed.

The service life of transmission fluid depends on many factors: operating conditions, climate temperature, thermoregulation in the system and on average ranges from 1 to 2.5 years. Replacement after 30-40 thousand km of travel will be considered optimal.

When to change the oil

The period for replacing lubricant in the automatic transmission of a Peugeot 307 ranges from 60 to 80 thousand km. More precise regulations depend on how quickly the oil deteriorates. This can be determined by various signs associated with inadequate operation of the gearbox. In this case, we are talking about possible slipping of the automatic transmission on long climbs or the inability to switch from P or N to any other gear. Of course, in such cases it would be useful to check the condition of the oil, which, if spoiled, will have an unpleasant odor and contain wear products or metal shavings. Untimely replacement of the lubricant will lead to technical problems due to the abundance of dirt deposits in the solenoids, valve body and other parts of the transmission.

Practical advice on choosing oil in an automatic transmission Peugeot 307

The choice of transmission needed to change the automatic transmission oil in your own Peugeot 307 should be approached with serious responsibility. You should first find out the brand and viscosity recommended by the manufacturer. For automatic transmissions, it is recommended to use ATF that meets SAE 75-W90.

You should choose well-known manufacturers, try to avoid “counterfeit” ones, since low-quality working fluid will cause driving difficulties, even breakdown, which will lead to full-fledged expensive repairs.

Original automatic transmission oil for Peugeot 307

Peugeot indicates that the oil poured into an automatic transmission will lubricate the rubbing surfaces of the box for the entire period of ownership of the car and there is no need to change it. Due to its composition, synthetic fluid is not afraid of high temperatures and is designed for long-term operation. However, after running in a new box, there is a possibility of a suspension appearing inside the box due to wear of the clutches, which will lead to contamination of the fluid and its replacement.

The liquid filled from the factory in a liter container is marked - Mobil ATF 4HP20 AL4; two-liter containers are not currently available.

Peugeot 307 automatic transmission oil analogs

The recommended alternative fluid for a Peugeot 307 with an automatic transmission is Mobil ATF LT 71141, which contains a well-balanced additive package and a sufficiently long service life until the next replacement, which is a good help over competitors.

Transmissions from other manufacturers can be distinguished:

  • Total Fluide XLD FE;
  • Liqui Moly ATF 1200;
  • GM Dextron 6:
  • BMW ETL 7045E;
  • Ford Mercon V;
  • Toyota ATF T-IV.

Checking the level

It would be a good idea to periodically check the oil level in your own automatic transmission and the quality of the lubricant in the system. Driving in dirty conditions will have a bad effect on the life of the gearbox.

We carry out the steps in order:

  1. The car must be installed on a viewing hole or lift in order to have access to the bottom of the car. You can raise and lower the car body with a jack;
  2. Warm up the engine to 60°C and turn it off. Move the selector to position “P”.
  3. It is desirable to have a diagnostic scanner or similar equipment available in car services;
  4. Unscrew the filler cap under the hood;
  5. About one and a half liters of transmission fluid is injected with a manual syringe. You can use a rubber hose and funnel;
  6. Start the Peugeot power unit and warm up the system to 60-70°C, unscrew the drain plug from the inspection hole using a 27 mm wrench or socket;
  7. When the oil flows in a thin stream and after a while begins to drip, the level is normal.
  8. When the liquid immediately flows in drops, and then stops flowing altogether, it means there is not enough liquid in the system and a mandatory top-up is required. You should add another one and a half liters and repeat the procedure.
  9. If the oil is already black in color and has a burning smell, a complete replacement is necessary.

Materials for comprehensive oil change

You should acquire the necessary materials when carrying out work:

  • Purchased suitable transmission fluid recommended for filling in the Peugeot 307 by the manufacturer;

Draining old oil from the tank

Step-by-step guide - how to drain old oil from a Peugeot 307 automatic transmission:

  • We start the Peugeot 307 engine and warm it up for better oil fluidity when draining from the sump;
  • We install the car on a pit or lift. Remove the automatic transmission crankcase protection;
  • We find the drain plug with a tetrahedral washer and unscrew it with a 27 key.
  • We are waiting for the pan to drain into the prepared container; due to the higher viscosity of the liquid than in a car engine, the procedure will take a little longer. The sealing copper gasket is replaced and the plug is screwed into place.

Washing the tray and removing chips

Partial oil changes in the Peugeot 307 automatic transmission are performed every 30,000 km. After 100 thousand, it is recommended to completely change the used oil, washing the pan and removing possible metal shavings.

The process of flushing the pan on a Peugeot 307:

  1. After the drain plug is screwed in, remove the pan, which is bolted to the box body. Next, holding the pallet in a horizontal position, slowly remove it from its seat. There will definitely be some liquid left in the pan, so being careful, pour it into a container;
  2. It is worth visually assessing the condition of the oil. We clean the tray with a wire brush to remove dirt and wipe it with a dry cloth. At the moment when the tray cover is removed, you need to make sure that there are no metal shavings on the magnets installed inside.
  3. We assemble the pallet in the reverse order of removal.

Replacing the filter

The automatic transmission of a Peugeot 307 is filled with transmission mineral fluid “Dextron III”. The filter is made of plastic and metal, product catalog number is No. 144010. Cleaning occurs thanks to the felt installed inside the automatic transmission filter.

Reko

It is recommended to replace the filter with each partial oil change in a Peugeot automatic transmission, preferably every 30-40 thousand km.

The older the car, the more critical it is to the quality of the transmission oil. If the replacement is untimely, dirt in the oil and metal shavings can get into the hydraulic unit, contaminate its channels and it will produce abnormal pressure, which threatens to break the Peugeot 307 automatic.

When removing the automatic transmission pan, the filter is immediately clearly visible; it is screwed inside the housing. There are no difficulties in replacing it, you need to unscrew the old element and install a new one, assemble everything in the opposite sequence.

Filling with new oil

The process of filling new transmission oil into a Peugeot 307 automatic transmission:

  • Open the Peugeot hood after removing the automatic transmission protection;
  • Remove the air filter and disconnect the battery.
  • We remove the platform for the battery, which is held on from the bottom by a single bolt.
  • We fill in fresh fluid, it is advisable to change the copper gasket on the plug, it is advisable to do this every time you change the oil.
  • Replace the battery and air filter.
  • We start the Peugeot engine and wait until it warms up to 60°C. After this, keeping the brake pedal depressed, we alternately engage all gears.
  • We turn off the engine. After 20 minutes, unscrew the metal drain plug. Residual liquid must be drained. Then, when the oil stream begins to drip, the plug can be tightened.

Transmission fluid replacement process

Put aside the insecurity that you are an amateur who does not understand any technical issues. We will help you increase your level of self-esteem and teach you how to update quickly and efficiently.

How often should I change

Let's start with the fact that you don't need to change the TM often in automatic and manual transmissions of the Peugeot 307. The manufacturer advises us that it is useful to change the gearbox oil after 40 thousand kilometers, since after such a long period of use of the vehicle, the transmission fluid loses some of its useful qualities. This is not only impossible to put up with, but also dangerous, since old used oil fluid is not able to provide normal thermoregulation, as well as prevent excessive friction of the moving elements of the unit. As a result of your inaction, the gearbox will jam, and you will no longer be able to drive your Peugeot until specialists from the service station work their magic on the failed automatic transmission.

Checking the level

We warn you that sometimes you will not have to change the transmission, but add the missing amount of TM. You will be able to identify the existing deficiency if you check the oil level in the Peugeot 307 automatic transmission. Having opened the hood, you can easily find a plug, unscrewing which you can easily assess the TM level. It can be located on the left side of the box if the internal combustion engine of your car has a volume of 1.6 liters. If the volume is 1.8 or 2 liters, then look for the plug on the right in front of the gearbox. After unscrewing the plug, make sure that the TM leaves marks on the bottom of the plug, this indicates a normal transmission level.

If your car has an automatic transmission, then checking the transmission oil level needs to be done a little differently. Find a place where you can place the car in a horizontal position. After this, set the selector to position “P”. Next, turn on the equipment for diagnostics, after which you will need to select the appropriate option, in this case it will be “Measure parameters”.

Take the new TM in your hands, unscrew the filler plug and pour about 0.5 liters of the new TM into it. To make it easier to carry out such manipulations, we recommend that you equip yourself with a special filling syringe or funnel. Your next step will be to start the engine. Let it run for a bit until it warms up well. Now unscrew the plug designed to check the oil level and watch how the oil flows out. If you initially notice a thin stream and then droplets, then you can rest assured that the oil level is normal. If, after opening the plug, a few drops appear and then the flow stops completely, then you must definitely pour in at least half a liter of new oil.

What oil to use

Before adding or changing transmission fluid, it is useful to figure out which oil is suitable for the automatic transmission of your Peugeot 307. We do not recommend conducting “experiments” when purchasing a transmission second-hand, since counterfeit products can cause serious problems, which include failure of the automatic transmission. If you have a manual transmission, then purchase API GL-5 semi-synthetic oil. If your Peugeot 307 has an automatic transmission, then it is recommended to purchase oil whose viscosity corresponds to SAE 75W-90.

The process of partial oil change in automatic transmission

Experienced car owners know that after completing the first seven procedures, you will not replace the entire transmission fluid. The very first time you can change only half of the used transmission fluid. With each subsequent time, the percentage of renewed oil will increase, and only during the eighth procedure will you be able to completely replace the fluid. So, with your own hands you can easily carry out both partial and complete oil changes in the Peugeot 307 automatic transmission.

Complete replacement of automatic transmission fluid

Now let's figure out how to change the transmission oil of a Peugeot 307 automatic transmission. First of all, drive your car to the place where there is an inspection hole. It is very important that the machine is in a horizontal position. After this, go down into the pit; under the car you will easily find a drain plug, which you will have to unscrew.

We warn you that the waste will immediately begin to flow in a thin stream, so prepare a container to collect it. If, when you unscrew the cap, liquid begins to flow out, we recommend that you press on the cap itself, preventing this leak. As soon as the waste stops flowing out, wipe the surface with a rag, removing oil traces, install a new gasket, and then secure the drain plug.

Now you can get out of the hole, open the hood, and find the filler plug. Of course, you understand that you now have to unscrew the hole plug for the TM fill. Insert a syringe or funnel into this hole and pour a certain amount of new liquid through it.

If a manual transmission is installed, you will have to pour in about two liters of new oil, but if the car has an automatic transmission, then you will have to pour in about four liters of transmission fluid.

So, we hope that you were able to remember the sequence of steps to replace the transmission fluid. Now you will be able to carry out such an important technical procedure on time.

Complete replacement of automatic transmission fluid

It should be remembered that it will not be possible to completely replace all the used fluid in a Peugeot automatic transmission (the volume of the entire filled lubrication system is about 4.5 liters). After about the third or fourth attempt, changing the transmission fluid in parts, you can achieve completely new fluid.

Changing the oil in the automatic transmission of Suzuki Grand Vitara

The replacement procedure is very similar to a partial change:

  1. Place your vehicle on a viewing hole or overpass in the most horizontal position;
  2. Start the Peugeot power unit, warm up the lubrication system to 60-75°C, turn off the engine. Set the shift selector to position “P”;
  3. Remove the protection of the Peugeot 307 box, unscrew the plug with a wrench or a 27 mm socket and drain the used fluid into a container;
  4. Wait until the transmission drains into the container; the procedure will take about half an hour. Replace the copper o-ring on the plug and screw it into place. There is no need to tighten it too much so as not to damage the automatic transmission pan, otherwise it may crack.
  5. Unscrew the filler plug and gradually fill in the liquid using a rubber sleeve with a funnel or syringe attached.
  6. We start the Peugeot power unit and wait for it to warm up to 60-70°C, turn off the car, and after 20 minutes unscrew the drain plug. When the oil flows in a stream and then begins to drip, the level is correct. When the liquid drips immediately, as soon as you unscrew the cap, be sure to add more.

Oil drain

Rice. 5.65. Location of the oil drain plug (1) from the gearbox

Draining the oil for replacement must be done on a hot gearbox; to do this, take a short trip in the car (Fig. 5.65). To change the oil in the gearbox: – lift the car on a lift or place the car in a horizontal position on an inspection ditch; – the oil can only be drained partially, and the volume of drained oil is approximately 4 liters; – place a container to collect the oil under the oil drain hole and remove the oil drain plug 1 (see Fig. 5.64). The plug has a 27 mm hexagonal head. If necessary, press the plug when unscrewing to prevent oil from leaking prematurely, drain the engine oil; – when the oil has completely drained, wipe the oil around the drain hole and screw in the oil drain plug with a new sealing ring, tightening it to a torque of 40 N•m;
