Throttle valve for VAZ 2114 - device, repair, replacement

As is known, fuel-injected cars use many sensors that are necessary to monitor and control the operation of the engine. To operate an internal combustion engine, you need not only fuel, but also air, and the accelerator pedal actually regulates engine speed by supplying air to the cylinders. The more air entering the cylinders, the more fuel is needed for the correct fuel mixture ratio.

In injection cars, which is the VAZ 2114, a special unit called a throttle valve is used to regulate the air.

This article talks about the VAZ 2114 throttle valve, namely its purpose, design, signs of malfunction, cleaning and removal.

Where is the throttle valve located?

The entire throttle body is located in the engine compartment. It is located between the “intake manifold” and “air filter” ligament. In other words: air enters the air filter, passes through the mass air flow sensor, enters the throttle assembly, and from there it goes into the engine through the intake manifold (receiver). To find out where the throttle valve is located, pay attention to the figure (number 3).

Instructions for dismantling the mechanism

Replacing the throttle valve on a VAZ-2114 does not require any special professional skills, so even a novice driver can carry out all the work. To carry out the work, you need to arm yourself with all the necessary equipment: a 13mm socket wrench, screwdrivers, cleaning agent.

The procedure for removing the remote control is as follows:

  1. The plastic cover is removed from the top of the motor, and the hoses that provide ventilation are detached.
  1. It is also advisable to make sure that lubricant residues are in the air pipe; this will indicate that the mechanism really needs urgent cleaning.
  2. Then you need to remove the cap that covers the expansion tank to reduce pressure in the system, remove the clamps with fasteners and disconnect all supply hoses.

The final step in the throttle body removal process is to remove the hose that vents the fuel tank, disconnect the cable, and release the two bolts. When the mechanism is dismantled, based on a visual inspection, a conclusion can be made about its level of contamination. Then proceed to complete or partial cleaning of the throttle valve.

Throttle valve malfunctions VAZ 2114

The mechanism itself is not a complex structure and is designed for the entire service life of the engine. However, some design features of the motor and a number of external negative factors, over time, create obstacles to its normal operation. In most cases, problems with the damper are the result of simple contamination. The reasons for the appearance may be the following:

  • untimely replacement of the air filter, resulting in the entry of dusty, unpurified air;
  • the presence of defects and cracks in the air system and its elements (for example, a defective air filter, a torn pipe), the result is the same - contamination of the air flow;
  • the appearance of carbon deposits and oil residues on the inner walls of the throttle assembly and valve.

The result of the above reasons is the incorrect operation of the unit; the damper may not fully open or close, which directly negatively affects the operation of the engine.

Although the filtration and air flow purification process can be controlled, it will not be possible to completely get rid of carbon deposits.

Therefore, automakers recommend periodic cleaning of the unit from contamination every 25 thousand kilometers. We believe that this recommendation is completely justified in the conditions of Russian reality, the quality of fuel and the condition of the road surface.

How to properly clean the electronic throttle of a VAZ 2114

During the operation of the vehicle, its components and assemblies are subject to contamination.
Accumulated dust and dirt prevents the proper functioning of critical parts of the vehicle's systems, which in turn affects the vehicle's productivity. The electronic throttle valve on the VAZ-2114 is, according to experts, one of the most polluted mechanisms in a car. Therefore, the remote control must be given close attention and periodically maintained. Otherwise, the driver will experience excess gasoline consumption by the vehicle, instability of the engine, and many other troubles.

Troubleshooting

Before taking any action, you need to check the VAZ 2114 throttle valve for possible problems.

In order to accurately diagnose a malfunction or incorrect operation of the throttle, there are characteristic signs inherent to it. These are:

  • Instability of engine speed at idle, their unreasonable increase;
  • Periodically stalling engine;
  • Jerking while moving;
  • The discrepancy between the effort when squeezing the gas pedal and the final result (the proper reaction from the engine does not occur, power does not increase, the car does not pick up speed or does it late).
  • Noticeable increase in fuel consumption in standard driving mode.

Please note that problems may be caused by:

  1. The TPS sensor is faulty, resulting in the wrong amount of fuel being supplied to the system.
  2. Malfunction of the idle speed controller.

Therefore, sometimes it is advisable to check these important elements of the system.

Purpose

The VAZ 2114 throttle valve is designed to regulate the air flow supplied to the cylinders. On the 14th Lada model, two types of throttle valves were used: mechanical and electronic.

The damper is mounted on an axis, which is movable and opens when you press the gas pedal, thereby opening the air supply line. The throttle valve also contains additional sensors necessary for engine operation, such as: TPS and IAC.

These sensors regulate idle speed and are responsible for the stability of engine speed.

When is throttle valve flushing necessary?

Dust, dirt, and soot from the crankcase settle on the body from the inside and outside. The unit becomes contaminated, and along with this, characteristic symptoms of malfunctions appear.

It is extremely important to clean the throttle valve on a VAZ-2114 with an electronic pedal, since such a drive is much weaker than a cable. And even a small amount of dirt can disrupt the normal operation of the system.

Symptoms that may indicate that service is required:

  1. Jerking when driving at low speed (the accelerator pedal does not move).
  2. The crankshaft speed is either too high or varies over a wide range.
  3. Unstable engine starting.
  4. The engine stalls immediately after starting.

Similar symptoms are observed in case of malfunctions of the crankshaft sensors, throttle position sensors, and idle speed control. Therefore, before starting cleaning, it is advisable to perform diagnostics, at least with a simple scanner, in order to identify possible breakdowns.

Design

The throttle assembly is made of aluminum, and there are many mechanisms inside it, such as a damper actuator and a damper position sensor control drive. The TPS is installed on the same axis with the throttle valve. A little lower than the TPS there is an idle speed controller; this is a worm-type DC motor on the shaft of which there is a valve that blocks or opens the air flow necessary for the engine to idle. For IAC, the remote control has a special channel through which air flows when operating at IAC.

How to clean the throttle valve of a VAZ 2114: two ways

There are two cleaning methods:

  1. Without removing the unit;
  2. And accordingly with its dismantling.

Which method should I choose? It all depends on the degree of pollution. If the mileage has been up to 25 thousand since cleaning or replacing the throttle. Then, most likely, it is possible to limit ourselves to superficial cleaning and prevention without removing the part. In other cases, it is recommended to completely dismantle the unit for deep, thorough processing, cleaning and gaining access to hard-to-reach places.

We will describe in detail the process of complete removal after which the first option will not be difficult to complete. So, let's begin:

The first method of cleaning the throttle valve of a VAZ 2114

  1. To begin, unscrew the cap of the expansion tank with antifreeze. This is necessary in order to “relieve” the pressure and avoid antifreeze leaking out of the hoses.

  2. Next, we need to unscrew and loosen all the clamps that tighten the hoses attached to the throttle block. The same applies to the air pipe. To carry out the work we will need a 13mm wrench or socket.
  3. After removing the clamps, disconnect the hoses themselves. We disconnect the pipe from only one side and, for convenience, move it to the side.

  4. Now remove the throttle cable from the throttle drive selector.

  5. Turn off the power to the sensors.

  6. Take the 13mm head, unscrew the two bolts and remove the throttle assembly. Remove the old gasket.

  7. To treat contamination, you can use carburetor cleaner and a clean rag or rag. If the degree of contamination is very high, then you can use a toothbrush with hard bristles.
  8. Just before cleaning, disconnect the idle air control. Apply the product to the contaminated surface. Using progressive movements, remove carbon deposits from the metal surface. If you are not satisfied with the result, repeat the operation again until complete cleansing. It is very important to clean or blow out the channels that are in the product. A large amount of dirt accumulates there. It is most convenient to carry out purging using compressed air. To do this, you can use a regular car pump.
  9. If the sensor socket and the sensor are clogged, be sure to clean them too.

  10. Do not forget to carefully clean the junction of the throttle assembly and its internal cavity. To do this, apply some cleaning product to a rag. Distribute evenly on the inner walls of the parts. Take a brush and clean the problem areas. After finishing the treatment, wipe the cleaned areas with a damp cloth and remove any remaining dirt.
  11. After washing the unit, it is recommended to clean and blow out the disconnected pipes.
  12. We expect a short amount of time.
  13. We install a new gasket at the junction of the throttle assembly.
  14. We attach and secure the knot in place.
  15. We connect the IAC sensor.
  16. We pull the hoses onto the fittings of the cooling system and connections to the adsorber.
  17. We put on the throttle body pipe.

  18. We fix the cable on the drive.
  19. Tighten the clamps of all attached elements.
  20. We connect the sensor chips.
  21. Close the cap of the expansion tank with coolant.
  22. We start the car and test its operation.

The second method of removing the throttle valve

The non-removal method is somewhat similar to the one we described earlier. The only difference is that we will only remove the air duct pipe and nothing else. The work steps are as follows:

  1. Remove the pipe;
  2. We repeat point number 10 of the previous method.
  3. We connect and secure everything in the reverse order, not forgetting to replace the old gasket with a new one.

Keep in mind that this method is most suitable for preventative, light, superficial cleaning. If malfunctions or incorrect operation of the engine occur, use only the removal method. Now we know how to clean the throttle valve on a VAZ 2114 using two different methods, quickly and without much difficulty.

Flushing the remote control

In this article we will describe two types of DS cleaning:

  1. Surface.
  2. Full.

They differ in the degree of complexity and, accordingly, in quality.

Superficial cleaning

Its essence is that we will not completely disassemble the entire remote control, but will go over the damper with a cloth and remove surface dirt.

For work we will need:

  1. Any cleaning agent: carburetor cleaner, alcohol, thinner, gasoline, wd-40. They differ in the degree of “removability” of dirt.
  2. Rag.
  3. Brush.

First of all, we remove the air filter corrugation from the air filter, take our cleaning agent and spray it inside. We begin to clean the surface with a rag and brush. Also, do not forget to open the damper itself and clean it from the back. At this point the process is completed, we install the filter pipe back, and that’s it. But with this cleaning method, we will not be able to completely clean all the insides of the remote control, blow out all the holes and channels, so it is better to use a complete cleaning.

How to clean the throttle valve on a VAZ 2114

The injection VAZ-2114 has 8 valves and 16 valves and has a throttle valve that collects dust and oil particles. Over time, it becomes dirty, which causes engine failure. If there are dirt roads in your area, then in the summer the damper should be cleaned more often, at least twice a season, regardless of mileage. The fact is that the dust that rises when the car moves inevitably settles on this unit. Let's figure out how to clean the throttle valve of a VAZ-2114.

Cleaning the throttle

The throttle valve must be cleaned every 50-70 thousand km of the vehicle. Because due to its design, the throttle often becomes dirty, which leads to uneven idling and other problems associated with engine speed.

To clean the throttle, it must be removed from the vehicle.

  • To do this, unscrew all the pipes and hoses suitable for it;

  • We remove the connectors from the sensors if it is a mechanical throttle;
  • We unscrew the nuts securing the throttle to the receiver: electronic remote control – 3 nuts, mechanical – 2 nuts;

  • We take out the throttle;

Attention! On an electronic throttle, it is prohibited to press on the valve, as this may damage the mechanism.

  • Flushing consists of cleaning the throttle walls and flap from carbon deposits; for this it is best to use a carburetor cleaner;
  • On a mechanical throttle, it is also necessary to flush the IAC channels; to do this, it must be removed;
  • After washing the remote control, we install it in place, not forgetting to replace the gasket, if it is torn, between the remote control and the receiver.

General characteristics

If we consider the throttle assembly as a whole, it will consist of several parts:

  • coolant outlet and supply pipes;
  • ventilation system tube;
  • a sensor that controls the position of the damper;
  • RXX;
  • the damper itself;
  • condensation system pipe.

Knowing the throttle structure and what it looks like is necessary for cleaning. This unit is one of the most important components of the intake system. When the throttle operates correctly, a sufficient amount of air is sent to the engine, which is used to enrich the fuel mixture. The damper is controlled by an electronic gas pedal, which, when pressed, changes the opening angle.

This mechanism is located between the intake manifold and the air filter. Getting to it for preventive cleaning will not be difficult even for someone who has just become a car enthusiast.

To work, you will need to prepare tools and materials for cleaning.

Cleaning methods

There are two ways to clean the throttle valve for a VAZ 2114 car:

Each of them deserves separate consideration.

Surface cleaning

The easiest way that does not require virtually any knowledge in the field of car repair and disassembly. There is no need to disassemble the damper itself, because this option is preferred by almost all beginners who are just beginning to learn the joys of self-repair.

The procedure for superficial cleaning of the throttle valve is as follows:

  • Remove the corrugation from the throttle valve;
  • Treat interior surfaces with your chosen cleaning product. Better than WD40;
  • Go over the knot with a brush. Just don’t use metal ones;
  • Wipe off any accumulated dirt with a dry cloth;
  • Carry out similar activities on the reverse side of the damper;
  • Reinstall all removed items.

Signs of damper contamination

The car itself may tell you that it’s time to start cleaning the damper. To do this, you need to listen to the engine. A few main signs:

  • when the e-gas pedal is released, the engine speed decreases jerkily;
  • difficulty starting in winter;
  • When starting, a strong smell of gasoline may be felt in the garage;
  • at the beginning of operation, the engine stalls, since not all cylinders start at the same time;
  • the car jerks during acceleration;
  • it is impossible to brake with the engine and coast;
  • when switching to low speeds, the car may stall;
  • When driving at low speeds, shocks are felt.

The appearance of these symptoms is due to the fact that insufficient air enters the engine and the fuel mixture becomes poorly enriched. Due to the design features, combustion product residues accumulate on the damper - unprocessed fuel, soot, drops of oil. Dust and small particles of sand are added to them from the air supply system, which makes the mass very thick. The intervals between preventive cleanings are shortened by poor quality fuel and engine oil.

When the layer of dirt becomes thicker, the damper cannot move smoothly, and its opening angle becomes smaller. Because of this, the amount of air entering the cylinders is reduced and engine power is reduced.

Symptoms of DZ malfunction

The throttle mechanism quickly becomes dirty due to the fact that it is located in direct contact with combustion products. Plus, during the operation of the car, natural contamination of the internal protection occurs with various inclusions that enter through the filter membrane. Dust and dirt reduce the movement of the damper, the thermal gap decreases, and in turn the channel capacity decreases.

You can understand that the throttle valve needs cleaning by the following signs:

  1. During frosts, starting the VAZ-2114 engine is very problematic, and when starting the engine you can’t hear the smell of exhaust gases. In a closed room you can often hear the strong smell of gasoline.
  2. Due to the lack of air-fuel mixture in the engine cylinders, vibration occurs when the power unit is started, and at low speeds the vehicle jerks.
  3. There is no smoothness when releasing the gas pedal and when switching from high to low speeds.

If similar symptoms of a malfunction begin to appear, then it is likely that the throttle mechanism has reached its critical level of contamination and requires prompt cleaning.

Step-by-step instruction

Before starting work, purchase a special cleaner for carburetors, and also prepare a set of screwdrivers and a 13mm wrench. If you want to get to the hidden places of the damper, then also take cotton swabs. When disassembling it often turns out that the reservoir o-ring and throttle body gasket are unusable, it is best to replace them at the same time as cleaning, so that later you do not have to waste time disassembling the assembly again. You need to purchase parts based on engine size and number of valves. The gaskets for 1.6 are slightly different than for a motor with other parameters.

  1. Lift the hood and remove the plastic cover from the engine. If you have not a mechanical, but an electronic damper, which was installed on cars of later years of production, then remove the terminals from the battery and disconnect the electronic damper control chip.
  2. Disconnect the rubber ventilation hose. This hose is held in place by a clamp, so you will need a screwdriver. If you see dirt in this part of the assembly, wipe the connections and components with a rag.
  3. To reduce the pressure in the cooling system, remove the liquid supply tubes from the throttle assembly. To do this you will need to loosen the clamps. To prevent dirt from getting into the cooling system, plugs are put on the tubes. There you can do with all the hoses.
  4. Lastly, remove the fuel tank ventilation hose.
  5. After this, it is enough to unscrew two bolts and disconnect the accelerator pedal cable to get to the damper.

Examine the part and decide how you will proceed next:

  • carry out superficial cleaning without removing the entire assembly;
  • completely remove all contaminants, replace the gasket and o-ring.

In the first option, you need to remove a layer of dirt using a rag or cotton pad from the surface of the damper. In this case, do not use specific cleaning agents - wipe the throttle with gasoline or ordinary solvent. When cleaning, manually adjust the flap to remove dirt not only from the outside, but also from the inside.

For complete cleaning, remove the throttle assembly. To do this, it is enough to remove two bolts with a 13mm wrench. In this case, complete cleaning is carried out with special means and consumables are replaced. After you finish work, be sure to blow out the assembly with a stream of compressed air. Thanks to this, you will get rid of excess moisture in the assembly. With complete cleaning, your manipulations take place in a non-confined space, which allows you to put the entire unit in order. This is exactly what is best to do if you are doing routine throttle maintenance. During the complete cleaning, be sure to pay attention to the idle speed sensor - it is best to remove dirt from it using WD40 and cotton swabs.

Cleaning the idle speed sensor

It is very important to pay special attention to the condition of the idle speed sensor. Since it plays an important role in the throttle assembly, and if this sensor is faulty, then the engine will behave inappropriately, and you will sin on the throttle. But this is not even the worst thing - a malfunctioning sensor always means excessive voltage on the entire system of the car and its incorrect operation, which is dangerous, especially at a VAZ, where sometimes it is not possible to figure out what caused the problem.

Knowing how to clean the throttle valve, we clean the IAC sensor. The only thing is that if you have the fourteenth with a volume of 1.6, you will first need to unscrew the two nuts securing the throttle assembly to the receiver and move it away with a gap of a couple of centimeters, without removing it from the car. The process for cleaning the sensor is as follows:

  • You need to remove the entire wiring system from the sensor.
  • Dip a cotton swab into the WD solution and carefully clean all these contacts.
  • Then use a cross-head to unscrew the sensor fasteners (if they are present, of course, if they are not, the IAC is sitting on the varnish and you cannot do without removing the entire assembly).
  • The sensor can now be pulled out and inspected - if it is all oily and covered with a layer of dirt - the VAZ 2114 throttle valve has long been in need of deep washing, just like it.
  • Take a WD-shku and spray it onto the needle of the cone with a spring, wipe off the corroded dirt with a cotton swab. Just like the entire assembly, you need to blow it out after washing and put it back in place dry.

  • Now check the distance from the sensor cone needle to the body - it should be 23 mm!

That, in principle, is all that concerns the process and reasons why you should clean the throttle valve. It is important to understand the fact that if after deep cleaning of the damper and sensors. The higher fourteenth still behaves badly, twitches and stalls at idle, then the problem is not in the throttle or in the sensors (most likely). Perhaps the wiring is loose.

By the way, if you still decide to go to the service center to the craftsmen so that they wash and clean everything for you, the pleasure is relatively inexpensive, on average 500 rubles. Advice - the throttle is the only thing they should clean, without touching your brain about the topic of why they clean the throttle and how often it should be done. It’s no wonder that the more often a client visits the service, the better the business goes. They may say that flushing should be done once every 10-15 thousand km; this is too small a figure and not realistic in practice.

What is a throttle valve?

It is an integral part of the engine injection system. Its main task in this system is to provide the necessary amount of air to form the air-fuel mixture. The air coming from the air filter encounters an obstacle in its path in the form of a damper. Pressing the gas pedal sets it in motion, and it turns to a certain angle. The greater the pressure on the pedal, the greater the opening angle.

After passing through the throttle assembly, the air is mixed with gasoline and directed into the cylinders. There, the air-fuel mixture is compressed and ignited, causing the pistons, and through connecting rods and the crankshaft, to move. The main characteristics of the motor depend on the degree of cleanliness of the input channel.

Car service nuances

It's no secret that many car owners prefer repairs at service stations. There are many reasons for this.

But there are several nuances that should be taken into account when visiting a service station.

  1. In addition to cleaning the damper, the technicians will begin to assure you that additional cleaning of a number of components is required, as if without this the repair will not be complete and the effect will not be achieved. All this is a banal attempt to charge you more money for unnecessary work.
  2. They may start telling you that the damper is cleaned every 15, or even 10 thousand kilometers, they will offer their services, maybe even provide a discount as a regular customer. Again, the simplest trick. This figure is completely untrue. The frequency of cleaning the throttle valve on a VAZ 2114 car recommended by the manufacturer is 60-70 thousand kilometers. But in practice it turns out to be about 50-60 thousand kilometers. You just need to monitor the condition of the unit and pay attention to the symptoms of contamination that we have already introduced you to today.

Whether to do the work yourself or have it done at a car service center is entirely up to you. The most important thing is not to let the problem get worse, as it can result in really expensive repairs.

When to clean the throttle body

The following signs of a dirty throttle body should alert the driver that it is time to clean the throttle body:

  • The smooth transition from high to low speeds disappears. The motor may stop spontaneously;
  • It is very difficult to start the engine in the cold season. It may be accompanied by the smell of gasoline from the exhaust pipe;
  • When starting the engine, vibration and “triple” are observed, since there is not enough working mixture for all cylinders;
  • Inability to coast or engine braking.

To get rid of all this, you need to clean the throttle body. In some cases this happens earlier, in others later, but it is necessary to clean the throttle valve. The main culprits of pollution are small particles of dust, which still penetrate through the air filter, and the fuel mixture. When they get on the moving parts of this unit, they impede their movement, reduce the flow area of the intake tract, and clog the channel and rod of the idle speed sensor. Various sources recommend carrying out preventive work when a car runs away from 40 to 50 thousand km. When operating the car in areas with heavy dust, the car will not reach these mileage figures, the unit will clog earlier. Operation in areas where snow cover persists for a long time, this mileage may be even longer.

The quality of the fuel and engine oil used influences the timing of flushing the throttle assembly. Please also consider this issue very carefully.

When is it needed?

Dust, oil, crankcase gas - all these are reasons why we have a dirty throttle valve. Slag settles on the walls of the entire assembly and prevents complete response to the pedal of the damper itself - it will no longer open and close efficiently. It will easily become clear to you that the time for cleaning has come, based on the following symptoms:

  • The engine starts every other time
  • Increased crankshaft speed
  • RPM fluctuates at idle
  • The car jerks if you drive at low speed
  • The engine may start and immediately stall

Cleaning has never been superfluous, but along with this procedure, just in case, check the condition of the air flow, idle speed and throttle lift sensors.

How to clean the throttle body

In order to clean the VAZ 2114 throttle valve, it must be removed. This is not at all difficult to do, you need to prepare a set of screwdrivers, a socket wrench set to “13”, a carburetor cleaner, and you can get to work.

Removing the throttle valve VAZ 2114

  1. Remove the decorative plastic cover of the motor;
  2. Next, the forced ventilation hose is removed. The presence of traces of oil in it serves as indirect confirmation of the need for cleaning;
  3. Open the cap on the expansion tank and release the clamps on the hoses that provide heating for this unit;
  4. Remove these hoses and close them with plugs to prevent coolant from escaping;
  5. The fuel tank ventilation hose and the damper drive cable are disconnected;
  6. Remove the two screws that secure the damper and remove it.

Now it becomes possible to clean and flush this unit. We hope that why you need to clean the throttle valve is already clear, let’s talk about what to clean and how to clean it.

The best cleansers

To perform this operation, you must first purchase a throttle valve cleaner from retail chains. Today, the choice of such products on store shelves is quite wide. You may be offered a choice of tools such as MEDIC, BD 40, CTEPUP, FluxOff and others.

DZ cleaning agent

There is no point in recommending anything specific. As many chemical products are available for sale, there are as many positive reviews about them. In this case, it is worth listening to the opinions of those drivers who have already carried out similar work on their car; you can look for reviews on the Internet and other sources about this or that brand of cleaning product. The cleaning product should be packaged in an aerosol can with a tube to allow access to remote channels.

How to clean the throttle valve

This unit is not a very complex structure, so cleaning the throttle valve is possible in the garage and can be done by any driver. Cleaning methods are used when it can be superficial and complete. Let's look at them in order.

  1. The surface method is not very effective and is carried out approximately once every 2-3 thousand kilometers. To perform it, you need to have any chemical agent, a rag and a soft brush. Apply the product to the accessible surface of the damper. Let it sit for about 15 minutes, and then wipe everything thoroughly with a brush and rag. When everything is dry, you can continue further operation of the machine;
  2. For complete cleaning it is necessary to have a new throttle valve gasket and O-ring. When carrying out such operations, it is advisable to replace them. Their cost is low, and the responsibility for the quality of the supplied air is enormous. It should be noted that they have design differences, so you need to know which spare part to purchase. Spray the removed flap with cleaning agent several times. The number of times can range from 3 to 5, and sometimes more. This depends on the degree of contamination and the type of chemical. This may require 30-40 minutes of your time. Particular attention is paid to all calibrated channels. Most often they are covered with soot. The throttle valve grooves are blown out with compressed air from a compressor or a tire pump with a nozzle is used. If you were able to flush the throttle valve, then do a similar procedure with the idle air regulator.

The damper sparkles in the rays of the garage lamp, which means that it can be returned to its normal place. Installation operations are carried out in the reverse order to its removal. At the end of the installation, there must be a mandatory check of the functionality of the cleaned unit.

Cleaning the throttle valve. 5 common mistakes when cleaning the throttle body yourself

The task of the throttle valve (hereinafter referred to as DZ) is to regulate the amount of air supplied to the intake manifold. Its position is adjusted in accordance with the position of the accelerator pedal. The damper drive can be mechanical (using a cable) or electronic (using an electric motor).

The position of the remote control is recorded by a special sensor. It transmits the relevant information to the ECU, which in turn makes a decision on the amount of fuel supplied and changing the engine operating mode. You can read more about its structure and functions in additional material on our website.

In order not to confuse the symptoms indicating excessive carbon deposits on the valve, it is better to first visually inspect it, and if there are no visible oil or coked deposits on the walls of the throttle assembly, then, with a high degree of probability, cleaning the throttle valve will not eliminate the problem.

The signs themselves look like this:

  • problematic engine starting;
  • uneven engine operation;
  • floating speed at idle;
  • freezing engine speed;
  • drops in speed until a complete stop.

Many inexperienced car owners can incorrectly clean the throttle assembly, at a minimum risking not getting the desired effect, and at maximum - completely damaging and disabling the throttle body. Therefore, it is important to understand when to do the procedure, how to do it and what means to use.

Dirty throttle valve

Clean throttle

To properly clean the throttle body, DO NOT:

  1. Clean the damper in any unclear situation (there are even jokes about this).
  2. Clean the damper without removing it (the effectiveness of such cleaning is insignificant, since often it is only possible to remove carbon deposits on the damper itself, and the internal walls and air channels of the damper are not cleaned).
  3. When cleaning with a rag, use excessive force, which can lead to damage to both the damper itself and the nearby TPS.
  4. Use brushes rather than soft materials. Such an error also quite often leads to loss of performance of the remote control, since on some throttle units the inner wall and damper are coated with molybdenum for even smoother air passage. This layer is often confused with plaque and is removed. As a result, the damper begins to either “bite” or allow excess air to pass through (the speed increases).
  5. Forgetting to teach the throttle after cleaning. Dampers with an electronic gas pedal require proper learning of the remote control in order to set the idle speed to the required value.

Cleaning the throttle valve on Mitsubishi and Nissan requires a special approach. You need to act carefully and carefully so as not to remove the protective coating, the so-called “patch” - a sealing coating along the contour of the remote protection. And also be sure to train the damper to set new engine operating parameters).

The throttle valve should be cleaned every 30-50 thousand km.

Adhering to all the above recommendations and taking into account the main mistakes that inexperienced car owners make, no more questions should arise about how to clean the throttle valve, be it mechanical or electronic. For cleaning you need a minimum of equipment and costs, just a carb cleaner and clean rags, as well as a screwdriver for dismantling the unit.

Cleaning algorithm

Now we will give a step-by-step algorithm for properly cleaning the throttle valve.

  1. First of all, you need to get to the damper itself. The design is different in different engines. But as a rule, to do this you need to remove the air duct that runs from the damper to the air filter.
  2. Dismantle the damper. To do this, unscrew several mounting bolts (2-4 pieces), and also disconnect the necessary connectors (for example, the connector from the absorber purge valve).
  3. To clean, you must use a carburetor cleaner. There is a wide variety of them, and in auto stores you can easily find a product in accordance with your preferences and capabilities (we will talk about them later).
  4. Using a rag and the mentioned product, you must thoroughly wipe the damper outside and inside.
  5. You also need to clean the protective grille (if your car has one).
  6. Assembly of the unit is carried out in the reverse order.

Remember that you need to clean the damper thoroughly so that the metal is as light as possible. This will ensure, after its installation, an increase in the dynamic characteristics of the machine.

An easy way to clean your throttle body

The correct way to clean the throttle body

Cleaning without removal

Also, many car owners are interested in the question of how to clean the throttle valve without removing it. Such methods do exist, but you must immediately understand that high-quality cleaning is only possible by dismantling the damper.

To do this, you will need a special product - an intake tract cleaner. You can use different brands. You can also use EGR valve cleaning fluid, WD-40, and solvents for cleaning.

So, the procedure without removing the node:

  1. As in the previous algorithm, you need to remove the air duct to get to the damper.
  2. With the damper closed, spray the surface with cleaning liquid and remove the cleaned dirt using a rag.
  3. Open the damper and remove dirt from the side surface.
  4. Make sure that the cleaning agent gets into all channels. The cleaning procedure is similar using a rag.

Let us repeat once again that for proper cleaning, the throttle valve must be removed from the car. And when installing it back, it is advisable to replace the damper gasket with a new one. Fortunately, its price is low.

Throttle valve VAZ 2114 - complete flushing and effective modification

To begin removing the throttle on a VAZ 2114, you need to determine its location under the hood of the car. The element is located opposite the VAZ intake manifold and serves as the main regulator of the amount of air that enters the manifold. The throttle opens and closes every time the driver presses and releases the gas pedal.

Removing the throttle

Due to the fact that the throttle works with air supplied to it from the street, the element is constantly clogged with dust and small insects. All this settles on the assembly, which is why the part gradually stops opening and closing.

To understand when to start flushing the throttle valve, you should pay attention to the following changes in engine operation:

  • the power unit does not start the first time;
  • the crankshaft rotation speed has increased;
  • the idle speed of the car “jumps”;
  • The car sometimes jerks when driving at initial speeds.

Flushing the throttle valve

If you do not find any of the signs of a part being clogged, this does not mean that it is completely clean. For the purpose of prevention, experts advise flushing the throttle valve every 70 thousand km.

Types of remote control

The VAZ 2114 was equipped with two types of throttle valves: mechanical and electric. Let's look at each of the dampers in more detail, and also talk about the pros and cons of these units.

Mechanical damper

Such a damper is controlled using a gas pedal cable, that is, a cable runs from the pedal assembly in the car interior to the remote control, which opens the damper when you press the gas pedal. Such a throttle was installed on the VAZ 2114 from the very beginning of its production. The mechanical throttle contains additional sensors necessary for engine operation.

The mechanical remote control is equipped with heating, and it is through it that the engine cooling system pipes pass.

This part is quite reliable and lasts for a very long time without any damage, but, like all components, it has its pros and cons.

Pros:

  • Simple design;
  • Throttle heating;
  • Simple mechanism;

Minuses:

  • The presence of two sensors that often fail;
  • Frequent contamination of the XX channel;

Electric damper

An electronic throttle unit appeared on the VAZ 2114 in 2011 and became known as the E-GAZ system; this damper made it possible to abandon the TPS and IAC sensors. All necessary processes for adjusting the air supply at idle and at speed are regulated by the damper itself.

On this throttle, heating was abandoned, since it was no longer required. This damper has become much more advanced and modern.

Pros:

  • No IAC and TPS;
  • Reliable design;
  • The damper gets dirty less often;

Minuses:

  • Many people complain about the gas pedal being laggy and responsive;

Preventative cleaning of the part

In order not to wait until the VAZ 2114 throttle completely stops functioning, it is necessary to carry out surface washing of the part. This cleaning method is very simple. But do not forget that by performing such an operation, you will only clean some parts of the damper from dust. Consequently, the work will not be of much use. However, superficial cleaning will be an excellent start for VAZ drivers who have no experience in servicing the throttle valve.

Surface washing of the part

For preventative cleaning, it is necessary to remove the corrugation from the surface of the part. Next, we spray the internal parts of the damper with a cleaning agent, after which we thoroughly clean its structure with a rag or brush. The same must be done on the reverse side of the throttle valve. After this, install the corrugation and close the hood of the car.

Installing the throttle body corrugation

This cleaning method can be performed every 20–30 thousand km. In this way, you will significantly reduce the clogging of the element and extend its service life.

Signs of a dirty remote control

The most common symptoms associated with a dirty damper:

  1. Poor engine starting.
  2. Unstable idling, speed fluctuates.
  3. The car jerks when driving at low speeds.
  4. Difficulty idling, engine stalls.

All these signs indicate a dirty remote control. But do not rush to draw conclusions and start cleaning the unit, because they may also indicate a breakdown of some sensors: IAC, TPS - they are located on the throttle assembly and may be faulty. In particular, high-quality washing of the remote control can cure them, but not a fact (by following the link, you can check, clean, replace the IAC, check the TPS, repair and replace it). A faulty mass air flow sensor also has similar symptoms. It is advisable to clean the remote control at intervals of 30 thousand km.

How to replace the throttle assembly on a VAZ 2113-VAZ 2115?

Removal: 1) At the very beginning of the operation, loosen the screw (Indicated by the red arrow) that holds the clamp clamp, which in turn holds the end of the air intake pipe (The end is indicated by the blue arrow), after which disconnect the end of the pipe from the throttle assembly by hand, if you need To interfere with all this is a small crankcase ventilation hose that is connected to the place indicated by the green arrow, then disconnect this hose (As you can see in the photo, this hose is already disconnected), it is disconnected in the same way as the air intake pipe, that is, the screw has been loosened a little and then disconnect the hose, thereby you will provide yourself with access to the throttle assembly itself and it will be much easier to unscrew the nuts securing it.

2) Then disconnect three or four hoses (On some cars there may be three, and on some four, the fourth hose will only be on those cars that are equipped with an adsorber) from the three or four fittings that are located on the throttle assembly, for clarity in the photo below the fittings are indicated by red arrows and the hoses that are connected to them are blue, the hoses are disconnected from the fittings in the same way as the air intake pipe, that is, the screws are loosened and after which the hoses are disconnected, but there is just one caveat, before disconnecting the hoses, be sure to cool drain the liquid from the cooling system (For information on how to drain the coolant, read the article: “Replacing coolant in a VAZ”).
