Some experts predicted the same glorious future for the domestic car Lada Priora Sport as the Soviet VAZ 2101. Indeed, in terms of popularity and prevalence, the Priora is not inferior to anyone.

In 2007, the first production model left the assembly line, and over the next three years it ousted the Lada-Ten from the domestic market, although it itself is only a deep restyled version of the VAZ 2110, and not something truly new.

Priora Sport is the maximum version of this line of domestic cars. The technical characteristics are not ideal, however, the car has become the flagship of AvtoVAZ, distinguished by a more modern design and construction comparable to most foreign cars of the same category.

One of the arguments in favor of the Lada Priora coupe is that the car is assembled by hand. What catches your eye when you first look at a car? A fashionable front bumper, which distinguishes the Sport version from its counterparts, and large doors that are reminiscent of the V8s of the 90s. They finally decided to strengthen the door hinges on the Priora so that the doors themselves would not sag to the ground. By the way, the length of the Priora coupe is slightly longer than that of the sedan.

Compared to the hatchback version, the new model demonstrates major changes in the design of the rear of the car. Overall, the new car is a good example of crossing old and new. For the first time, a Russian car has electric rear-view mirrors and beautiful LED rear lights. The finishing materials for the dashboard and interior have become higher quality than their predecessors.

The 1.6 liter engine with 16 valves in the Sport Edition coupe is generally exactly the same as in other trim levels, but more powerful, although it is difficult to call a sports engine with 98 hp. Model configurations depending on modification

The first version of the Lada Priora coupe, produced from 2009 to 2013, was offered only in a top-end configuration with one type of engine: a 16-valve 1.6-liter with a power of 98 hp. With. The restyled version has a more powerful 106 hp engine. With. with a new electronically controlled distributed injection system. It gave, albeit an insignificant, but still a reduction in fuel consumption - up to 6.8 liters, and this with an increase in engine power. The transmission in all cases is 5-speed manual.

The interior contents are very similar to hatchbacks, which is not surprising, since it was taken as a basis. However, there are still differences that bring their own flavor to the interior of the Lada Priora coupe:

  • modified instrument panel;
  • artificial leather on the steering wheel and seat upholstery;
  • soft upholstery covering the shield;
  • chrome and gloss inserts.

The Priora sport coupe is larger than its more modest counterparts. With a body length of the base model of 4210 mm, the sports modification has an increased length of 4243 mm (due to the original bumpers). For the first time, it was decided to change the model’s equipment downward to reduce cost and increase demand.

After modification of the Lada Priora Coupe Sport, a modification of the norm was released. The car lost the front passenger airbag, climate control, light/rain sensors, heated/electrically adjustable mirrors, rear windows, alloy wheels, while still retaining ABS, heated front seats, adjustable steering wheel, central locking with remote control. However, the sport package cannot boast of having parking sensors and an on-board computer.

At one time, the car enjoyed some popularity, but falling demand at the end of 2022 forced AvtoVAZ to stop producing this model. Although the car was sporty mainly due to its visual elements, in any case, the owners of the Priora coupe can be sure that their car is almost exclusive.

LADA Priora Coupe

More than 150 original parts and assemblies were developed for the car: rear wings, body frame parts, front doors, roof, side windows and glass seals, decorative body trims, wheel rims, upholstery. LADA Priora Coupe was produced at AvtoVAZ pilot production. Previously, its predecessor was produced here - a three-door car based on the LADA 112. The LADA Priora Coupe differs from this model in a more comfortable interior, a more powerful engine and a wider range of options. The basic equipment of the car includes electric windows, air conditioning, light sensor, rain sensor, parking sensors, anti-lock brakes, driver and passenger airbags, front seat belts with a pre-tensioning and force limiting mechanism, heated seats, alarm with central locking and immobilizer.

In 2012, the LADA Priora Coupe received an upgrade: in addition to the new “SPORT” prefix, it is distinguished by sporty-style bumpers and leatherette seat upholstery.

Lada Priora sport

Initially, it was planned to install GLONASS navigation as an option in Lada Priora cars back in mid-2009, but the dates were postponed. On June 1, 2010, Yuri Urlichich, General Director of Russian Space Systems OJSC, announced at the International Satellite Navigation Forum that serial production of cars with GLONASS/GPS receivers will begin in the first quarter of 2011. The audio system for LADA Priora is a pseudo 2 DIN head unit integrated into the instrument panel, 4 speakers, an antenna cable and an external highly sensitive antenna. An interference suppression capacitor is installed on the car engine.

The radio receiver operates in the AM/FM bands, the player reads data from a disk, from a USB drive and from a mobile phone via a Bluetooth channel. As mentioned earlier, 150 standard components had to be redone for the sports modification. The most obvious changes affected the body; the rear fenders had to be lengthened and the body frame changed. Any car in this series may seem unusual only because the “Norma” version already has parking sensors and fog lights. The bumpers in the restyled car have changed - they have become more “curvy”. On the wings of the restyled version, instead of turn signal repeaters, there are SE nameplates (the repeaters have moved to the external rear-view mirrors), emphasizing the peculiarity of the modification.

Disadvantages of Lada Priora

The disadvantages of the Lada Priora include the corrosion resistance of the body, which, although it was improved, was not able to completely protect the metal from rust. Therefore, a few years after the start of operation of the car, the first traces of rust already appeared, which required expensive body repairs.

One serious drawback of this car is its mediocre reliability, which primarily concerned the electrics, as well as the powerful 16 valve engine. This engine often broke the timing belt, after which a major engine overhaul was required. The electrics constantly malfunctioned, and the automatic machine had a service life of about 100,000 kilometers before overhaul.

Also, many car owners made complaints about this car regarding its ground clearance. The ground clearance was minimal, which significantly complicated the ability to use this car on country roads; any trip out of town into the forest turned into a real torment and obstacle course for car owners.

In 2009 and 2012, LADA Priora became the best-selling car model on the Russian market[21][22].

Since 2013, sales gradually began to fall, due to the general obsolescence of the model. A sharp drop in demand for Priora occurred after the launch of the new generation Lada models: Vesta and XRay. On July 16, 2022, the last Lada Priora rolled off the assembly line.

View of the car from the inside

The car is produced in a limited edition. It seemed like it would be because of something. Beautiful front bumper, SE badge, engine tuned to high speeds. Where exactly is sport here? What are the differences from other versions?

They still exist. First of all, electric power steering, and quite reliable. At least, according to widespread customer reviews, the EUR does not deserve a single stone in the garden. But there is evidence of cases of jamming of the front seat (the one that should easily fold forward to seat rear passengers). Factory transmission oil is clearly not intended for use in regions with severe winter frosts; in such cases, only replacing it with a more suitable one will save you.

Story

In March 2007, just over a thousand Priora sedans rolled off the assembly line, and sales began on April 21, 2007. The production of the hatchback model began in February 2008. A modification with a station wagon body was shown at the Krasnodar motor show in October 2008, and production of the version with this body began on May 27, 2009. In addition, AvtoVAZ produced a modification of the “coupe” (a brand name for a three-door hatchback) in small series and was developing a convertible based on it.

Since the beginning of 2009, the Priora family has completely replaced the LADA 110 family from the assembly line[2]. As of May 16, 2012, 650,000 vehicles were produced. In 2011, there were minor changes to the car - the front bumper, rear-view mirrors and steering wheel were replaced. New features have been added. Also in the “standard” configuration, a new 8-valve engine with a lightweight connecting rod and piston group was installed.

In September 2013, the car was restyled. Thanks to the changes, comfort and safety have increased and the appearance has been refreshed. The driving characteristics of the car have been modernized. The head optics were equipped with daytime running lights, sound insulation was improved, and an exchange rate stability system (ESC) was added to the options.

In September 2014, AvtoVAZ began production of the LADA Priora AMT version, equipped with a robotic gearbox. This is the company's own development, created on the basis of a standard five-speed gearbox using electric actuators and an electronic control unit from ZF.

Since 2015, all cars of the LADA Priora family have been equipped with a VAZ-2181 manual 5-speed gearbox with a cable shift drive. It has the same shift layout as the classic Zhiguli: reverse gear is engaged to the right and backward.

In December 2015, production of hatchbacks and station wagons, variants with a 98 hp engine, was completed. pp., as well as cars with a robotic gearbox. On April 21, 2022, the millionth Priora rolled off the production line[3]. On May 22, 2022, it was announced that the LADA Priora will be discontinued in July 2018[4].

On June 30, 2022, Supreme Leader of the DPRK Kim Jong-un made an inspection trip to military unit No. 1524 in a LADA Priora car, as reported by Korean and Russian media[5][6].

On July 6, an updated Vehicle Type Approval (VTA) for the LADA Priora car appeared in the Rosstandart database[7]. Previously, the validity of the document was limited to December 2018, now - until December 6, 2022, thus obtaining permission to produce the car before this time. Moreover, the new OTTS indicated that the sedan had been converted to 92nd gasoline thanks to the replacement of injectors. That is, AvtoVAZ worked until the very end to optimize the model. Now the media are claiming that the extension of the OTTS was a technical error by the certification body[8].

On July 16, a photo of the last LADA Priora body in the welding shop of the car plant, decorated with colored balloons and covered with a poster with the inscription “Last!” appeared on the Internet. The photo was taken on July 13 at about 14.00 (the poster in the photo indicates a different date - July 11). The model will still be assembled using previously welded bodies, including the last one, for several days[9].

Priora WTCC

Aerodynamic body kits for the Priora WTCC racing car were created by the tuning studio TORGMASH (TGM). For non-racing versions of the Priora Sport, aerodynamic elements from the tuned TMS studio are also used. The sports model Priors, like all sports cars, are equipped with skirts (a front bumper skirt with a lower spoiler), as well as rear bumpers with a diffuser with a spoiler on the trunk lid and, these tuned sport elements are complemented by door sill fairings.

Lada Priora Sport

A very useful innovation associated with the sale of Priory Sport with a separate package of elements for do-it-yourself tuning. This means that you can buy a fully equipped Lada Priora Sport with installed body kits, etc., as well as buy a basic car Priora and buy a separate tuning package for it to create a sporty appearance for the car. Separately, the “sport” package costs around 75 thousand rubles (plus or minus 5 thousand).

The basic equipment of the Lada Priora Sport car includes a VAZ 21126-06 engine with a power of 126 hp. A characteristic feature of the sport engine is a lightweight connecting rod and piston group; technologies for the production of sports car engines are also used. Thanks to new technologies, engine power increases to 30 hp. The tuning studio TorgMash carries out individual orders to increase the power significantly more.

A little about the technical characteristics of the sports Priora. After changes in the technical aspect of this car, its maximum speed is 200 km/h. Acceleration time to 100 km/h is 9.6 seconds. The chassis of the car has been practically completely replaced with a more compact one so that it matches the speed achieved and does not tip over when driving at maximum speed. The braking system has also undergone minor changes, namely, disc brakes are now installed on the rear axle. This change had a beneficial effect on the Tomrose path. After the improvements, the braking distance from a speed of 100 km/h decreased to 40 meters.

Body and wheelbase of Priora WTCC

The mass of the racing Priora (with a pilot) was 1150 kg. A real original body kit gave the car excellent aerodynamics and another air intake, which increased the downforce several times. The rear beam had to be lengthened (the lining on the rear arches widened the body by 10 cm), as well as the front one, the wheels were moved out, the stabilizer was changed to a sports kit, and a limited-slip differential was added for comfortable cornering at speed. The competition version was equipped with OZ 17” radius wheels with Yokohama 240/610 tires.

The rear and front suspension matched the car - McPherson independent springs, Sachs gas-filled shock absorbers and coil springs. The body was left with four doors, but was equipped with a welded safety cage. The brakes at the rear are AP Racing (300 mm) non-ventilated discs, with two-piston calipers, at the front – also AP Racing (300 mm) discs, only ventilated, with four-piston calipers.

It is also worth mentioning the steering: the steering wheel was installed with a hydraulic power steering developed by BMW, and the steering rack was from ZF Friedrichshafen AG. It was constantly modernized. As an example, a very sensitive steering wheel with a short-throw rack is not very convenient on a section with serpentine roads, which is why the gear ratio of the rack was changed for the Porto track, from lock to lock, it went not in two and a half turns, but in exactly two.

Lada Priora Sport - new strategy

By creating a special department that will promote sports cars, AvtoVAZ OJSC demonstrated the seriousness of its intentions towards the new Lada Priora Sport, which is supposedly predicted to become the fate of the legendary “penny”. According to the head of the new department, V. Nezvankin, at the first stage it is planned to produce 7–10 cars per week. Right at the start of sales, AvtoVAZ made a gift to fans of the domestic auto industry by announcing the possibility of purchasing a complete set of parts for independent tuning. This statement announced the fact that Priora Sport could be purchased in a fully assembled version and in parts. According to V. Nezvankin, the tuning kit will cost about 70 thousand rubles. Dealers have already announced updated prices for the complete model VAZ 21728-018-13 - 408 thousand rubles (clarification from dealers) and for the model VAZ 21728-018-12 - 421 thousand. Of course, the price of the Lada Priora Sport will be adjusted depending on the configuration.

The aerodynamic body kit included a reshaped front bumper with a spoiler at the bottom, a modified rear bumper, to which a spoiler was added on the trunk lid, and side skirt fairings completed the picture of the improved exterior. Moreover, the door sill fairings quite organically complement the appearance.

We must pay tribute to the manufacturer - for the price set, the buyer receives a fairly charged package. The 21126-06 engine of our own production received an increase in power by 27 forces due to the use of a more sporty injection system. In the proposed version, 125 horses enable Priora Sport to move at a maximum speed of 195 km per hour. Moreover, improved acceleration dynamics allows the car to accelerate to hundreds in 9.5 seconds. The increase in speed characteristics entailed the Lada Priora Sport being equipped with a new improved suspension and new rear disc brakes. The new suspension has significantly improved handling.

The standard configuration of the Lada Priora Sport https://auto.ironhorse.ru/lada-priora-sport_2062.html includes 14″ alloy wheels. Although the design allows the installation of tires with sizes 195/55R15, 195/50R16 and very low-profile 205/45R17. Low-profile tires emphasize the sporty character of the Priora Sport.

Curious facts

In 2012, Lada Priora was in fifth place in the list of most frequently stolen cars. This fact speaks for itself and is proof of her great fame. The same is confirmed by the presence of Priora in the twenty-five best-selling cars in the world.

A certain car owner decided to test Priora’s strength by racing through a body of water, the water of which reached the side mirrors of the car. It turned out that the car perfectly solved the tests given to it, after which it was lovingly called “amphibian.” This is its distinctive feature and undoubted advantage. The car still receives excellent reviews from car owners, which confirm its improved characteristics.
