Once all the bolts are received, they are moderately tightened, the jack is removed and all the bolts securing the rear transmission mount are tightened again. This is all. The control dimensions of the metal frame and the correct location of certain points are a cursor by which you can assess the condition of the body. Knowing the standard control dimensions of the body for the VAZ 21099, you can find out about any deformations and damage, thereby protecting yourself from fraud when purchasing.

You can check the dimensions using a regular tape measure. Reference indicators are usually presented in linear and projection form. The first dimensions imply distances between points in a straight line, the second – in projection.

How to raise or lower the suspension of a VAZ car

Sooner or later, the time comes to modify the car’s suspension, or, more simply, the motorist is ready to tune the suspension of his VAZ. It doesn’t matter what the reasons are that the motorist decided to raise or lower the car’s suspension: both suspensions are possible, or only the front or rear.

You need to understand what responsibility the motorist will have if he decides to lower or raise the car’s suspension. Technologically, lowering or raising a car's suspension is not that difficult, even if the driver has little experience as an auto mechanic. The meaning is different.

Why are spacers needed?

As mentioned above, spacers allow you to independently and without much effort change the vehicle’s ground clearance. Such an operation may be necessary if the car is often used loaded, for example, to transport 4 passengers and cargo in the trunk. In this case, the car sags greatly and the wheel arches touch the rear wheels.

In addition, increasing the ground clearance will also be beneficial if you often have to drive on country roads that are not in the best condition. A higher ground clearance in this case, albeit slightly, will increase the vehicle’s cross-country ability.

The only thing you should not forget about is that installing spacers will lead to a change in the behavior of the car on the road. That is why, immediately after increasing the ground clearance, you should visit a car service center to check the camber/toe.

How to lower the suspension of a VAZ car

Tuning a car's suspension has some features. Before you lower or raise your car's suspension, you need to think about what the results will be after modifying the suspension. You need to understand that changing the factory standard parameters of the car will lead to a change in the physical properties that were originally included in the design.

Lowering the suspension not only improves the vehicle's handling, but also changes the appearance of the car. There are some peculiarities in lowering the suspension. When lowering, the motorist reduces the ground clearance (clearance). You also need to understand that when the suspension is lowered, the car will not drive on German autobahns and European roads.

There are potholes on our roads, and you will also have to cross tram rails. First, to lower the suspension, you must first diagnose the suspension and calculate the installation gaps between the wheel arch and tires.

It should also be taken into account that the tires will have to be changed to low-profile from high-profile. This is important to consider. Before raising or lowering the suspension, it is worth taking into account popular experience, which shows that all suspension components need to be changed at the same time. If you change suspension elements selectively, this will give the opposite results.

Installation of spacers for shock absorbers VAZ 2114, VAZ 2115, VAZ 2113, Lada Samara 2

Often, even a new VAZ 2113 car, with a fully or sometimes partially loaded trunk, touches the wheel arches with its rear wheels. You can get rid of this trouble, and at the same time increase ground clearance, by installing spacers between the lower ends of the rear shock absorbers and the eyes of the Lada 2115 rear suspension beam. We chose spacers that allow you to raise the rear of the car in three different positions.

ATTENTION

When lifting the rear of the car, three important parameters change: the position of the rear brake pressure regulator, the direction of the light beams of the headlights and the caster angle of the front wheels.

The first two parameters can be adjusted independently. Castor decreases when the rear is raised, affecting the stability and controllability of the car. To adjust it, it is better to resort to the services of a service station.

For a vehicle in running order and with a payload of 320 kg (4 people) in the cabin and 40 kg of cargo in the trunk, the wheel alignment angles must be within the following limits:

To install the spacers, we hang up the rear of the car.

Using a “19” wrench, unscrew the nut of the bolt of the lower mounting of the VAZ 2114 shock absorber, holding the bolt from turning with a head of the same size,...

...and remove the bolt.

Similarly, disconnect the lower mount of the second shock absorber.

On one side of the spacer the distance shown in the photo is greater than on the other. With this side we orient the spacer towards the longitudinal axis of the car.

Please note that the spacers are mirror symmetrical and can be installed on both the right and left sides of the car

For proper installation of the spacer, it is necessary that the line passing through the centers of the holes for fastening the spacer to the beam and the lower end of the shock absorber is close to vertical and coincides with the longitudinal axis of the shock absorber.

Therefore, when installing the selected spacer on the right side of the car, only one hole can be used to attach the VAZ 2115 shock absorber.

If this option does not suit you.

In this case, you can use one of the other two holes to mount the shock absorber.

We install the spacer on the beam eyes.

We place a spacer between the beam eyes and insert the bolt.

Place a nut on the bolt and tighten it to a torque of 70–85 N.m.

In this position of the spacers, the rear of the car can be raised to the maximum or minimum amount. We chose the bottom hole.

Insert the bolt into the holes in the spacer and into the shock absorber bushing.

Place a nut on the bolt.

Similarly, install a spacer between the lower end of the other shock absorber and the eyes of the rear suspension beam.

We tighten the nuts securing the lower ends of the shock absorbers to the spacers in the “car on wheels” position with a torque of 70–85 N.m.

To correctly install the pressure regulator, press the rear of the car with a force of 400–500 N.

Using a 13mm wrench, loosen the bolt securing the pressure regulator to the regulator drive lever bracket...

...and move the bracket with a screwdriver so that the gap between the lever and the lever spring is within 2.0–2.1 mm.

We check the gap with a drill or a piece of wire of the appropriate diameter.

After adjustment we carry out a road test. An observer outside the car should note that the rear wheels lock, which should occur slightly later than the front wheels when braking sharply from a speed of 30–40 km/h.

If the locking is too late, we reduce the gap; if it is early (the locking of the front wheels is ahead of the locking), we increase it, with the obligatory check in the manner indicated above.

To adjust the headlights, we place the equipped Lada 2113 car (with a spare tire, tools and a full tank of fuel) on a flat horizontal platform 5 m from the screen - a light wall of a building, garage, etc. We check and adjust the tire pressure on all wheels to normal, and place an assistant in the driver’s seat or place a 75 kg load. We mark the screen as shown in the figure (in this case, the intersection points of line 1 with lines A and B should be at the height of the centers of the headlights).

We set the headlight hydraulic adjustment handle to the minimum load position of the Lada 2114 car.

Turn on the low beam and cover the right headlight with a piece of cardboard. By rotating the adjustment screws of the left headlight, we ensure that the upper horizontal boundary of the light spot on the screen coincides with line 2, and the intersection point of the horizontal and inclined boundaries (E) with line A. We similarly adjust the light beam of the right headlight. 

Steel brace brackets

The weakest point of the second generation Samara suspension system is considered to be the brackets designed for attaching the braces to the radiator frame. This problem was observed even in first-generation cars, but VAZ specialists did not pay due attention to modernizing this unit. That is why the silumin bracket can easily be damaged when parking the car near a curb or while overcoming uneven roads.


Improved bracket made of steel

Even a slight blow can damage the fragile silumin, causing the front end of the stretcher to hang in the air and it will cease to perform its functions (holding the wheel in a given position). Consequently, the car will not be able to move independently. Replacing a faulty part on the road may cause some difficulties. Based on this, many VAZ 2113 owners have long solved this problem by installing brackets cast from steel. They are more durable, and their silent blocks have high rigidity. The height of the steel bracket is less than the silumin one, which minimizes the possibility of it hitting any obstacle.

The sequence of performing this type of tuning:

  • First, use a 24 mm socket to unscrew the nut securing the brace and bracket. In this case, the VAZ 2113 extension must be held with an open-end wrench of the same size as the head;
  • Next you will need to remove the washer;
  • Using a 17 mm socket, unscrew the three bolts that secure the bracket to the radiator frame and remove the part to be replaced;
  • it is necessary to additionally put adjusting washers on the stretcher, since the steel bracket has less not only height, but also length;
  • before installing the left bracket on it, you will have to make a small sample with sandpaper or a file so that the towing eye does not interfere with installation;
  • Now you can install the bracket in place and bolt it to the cross member of the radiator frame;
  • then the same washer should be installed on the front end of the stretcher;
  • After completing all the steps, you need to install the nut and tighten it to a torque of 160-176 Nm.
