The VAZ-2110 dashboard does not work: reasons, troubleshooting methods, tips

Many owners of Lada 2110, 2111, 2112, 2113, 2114 and Kalina cars have encountered the problem of failure to switch between the readings of the standard on-board computer or jumping arrows on the panel. There are three reasons for this malfunction in the “VDO” instrument panel.

Dashboard arrows stuck on Kalina

  • Loss of ground contact on the bolt where the wires from all devices are attached.
  • Wires are loose/broken in the steering column switch itself.
  • Poor soldering quality of one of the two E6E resistors on the panel board.

If you experience malfunctions of the vdo panel and some indicators do not work, read the article, we will look at how to repair it.

Arrangement

So, what can you see on the instrument panel in this car? The combination consists of several components:

  • antifreeze temperature indicator in Celsius;
  • tachometer - number of revolutions of the power unit;
  • right and left turn indicators;
  • speedometer - vehicle speed;
  • fuel reserve - the volume of fuel in the tank;
  • image of a gas station - a signal about the need to refuel;
  • control indicator for starting dimensions;
  • brake fluid level indicator;
  • starting high beam headlights;
  • knob for adjusting the clock;
  • display with total and daily mileage;
  • alarm control indicator;
  • clock screen;
  • battery charge level;
  • check engine - indicates an engine malfunction;

  • indicator indicating the handbrake is engaged;
  • oil pressure level;
  • choke light - only available on carburetor engines.

The VAZ-2110 is a passenger front-wheel drive vehicle in which the power unit is located in a transverse position. The car is designed for use on roads “equipped” with hard surfaces. The car body is all-metal, four-door, monocoque, sedan type. In order to transport long and bulky cargo, the seats located in the rear of the cabin can be folded.

Thus, the volume of the trunk increases. The engines - carburetor or with different fuel injection systems - consist of four cylinders. Volume - 1.5 l. The model has significantly improved handling characteristics when compared with rear-wheel drive VAZs, thanks to its front-wheel drive layout.

This is especially noticeable on unsafe, slippery roads or when taking difficult turns. It is possible to equip the car with fog lights, electrically heated seats, practical electric windows, a modern on-board computer, a useful catalytic converter for gases that have “worked their way” in the exhaust system, as well as electric exterior mirrors that provide a rear view.

The car can also be secured with an electronic anti-theft mechanism, an airbag, air conditioning, an anti-lock brake system, and lighting using a sunroof.

Features of panels of different VAZ-2110 models

On VAZ-2110 cars of different years of production you can see different options for instrument combinations.

  • The first models had a built-in electromechanical panel with factory number 3801010. Visually, the device can be easily identified by the mechanical odometer, which is built into the speedometer scale. It is driven by the engine, but the rest of the indicators operate on the magnetic principle. At the back of the shield you can find two power strips placed at right angles.
  • A little later, a dozen were released with an electronic panel equipped with a display at the bottom of the speedometer. Occasionally there are panels with a suction indicator or an airbag light in the same place. There are cars with dual displays - under the speedometer and tachometer.
  • It is extremely rare to find dozens with panels intended for the VAZ-21106. Such shields are equipped with technical number 21106-3801010. This panel can be identified by the display at the bottom of the tachometer and the extended range of the speedometer.
  • The latest VAZ-2110 models are equipped with shields that are unified with the 2118 model. They have one difference - the combination of scales. Unlike the old model, the signs on these panels are placed chaotically and slightly shifted to the right.

Troubleshooting VDO Instrument Panel Resistor

The problem described below appears only on VDO dashboards manufactured in 2006-2007 under article number 1118-3801010. It was installed from 2004 to 2011 on the Kalina, VAZ 2110, 2111, 2112, 2113 and 2114 models. We can recognize the manufacturer by its logo located under the inscription “km/h”:

Removed VDO instrument panel

This is due to a manufacturing error . On the dashboard board there are two resistors labeled “E6E”. One of these resistors was soldered crookedly . As a result of such defects, over time, cracks form in the solder due to which contact is lost and the on-board computer stops responding to the joystick of the steering column switch.

If the steering column switch is working properly, then this is definitely a problem in the “E6E” resistor!

What is needed to eliminate the VDO instrument disease

To complete the work you need:

  1. Soldering iron with fine tip.
  2. Solder (tin).
  3. Tweezers.
  4. Magnifying glass.
  5. Table fork.
  6. Screwdriver with star tip.

To diagnose this problem, you need to disassemble the dashboard. To do this, the dashboard is removed from the car and disassembled. And then the problem area on the board is inspected and soldered.

Disassembling the VDO dashboard

To disassemble the VDO panel, you need to snap off the front transparent plastic part of the panel, which is held on by six clips along the contour. Afterwards, the four star bolts are unscrewed and then the back cover is removed. After this, you need to snap off the black casing that remains on the front of the instrument panel. It is also held in place by plastic clips. This will allow you to remove the top glass and bottom cover from the dashboard.

Instrument panel with glass and bottom cover removed

To disassemble completely, remove the arrows and then unclip the latches from the board.

You can use a table fork to remove the arrows on the instrument panel from their seats. Before shooting, it is important to remember their location! The fork must be inserted under the arrow and, by gently pressing and rocking, tear it out of its seat.

The location of metal clamps in the center of the board and plastic ones at the edges

Then we proceed directly to removing the board from the remaining part of the instrument panel. To do this, you need to snap off the four metal clips in the center, as well as the four plastic clips along the contour. In the photo, these fasteners are circled in black.

Causes

The VAZ-2110 dashboard does not work - what to do in this case? First of all, it is necessary to understand the situation in detail and identify the original causes of the problem.

Of course, the most impressive malfunction of the panel is its complete failure. In such a situation, the instruments themselves, the indicators, and control lights stop working, and the arrows simply fall down. To solve this problem, the first thing you should do is check the functionality of the fifteen-amp fuse, which is designated “F6”. Often this is the reason why the dashboard on the VAZ-2110 does not work.

In general, there are several most common problems inherent in the shields of this car model. Each breakdown has its own characteristics and methods of correction.

Device

In this case, the instrument cluster on the VAZ 2110 includes:

  • Tachometer;
  • speedometer;
  • Fuel level indicator;
  • Coolant temperature gauge;
  • Indicator lamps in the amount of 12 pieces;
  • 6 instrument panel suspension lights;
  • Reserve socket for control lamp;
  • A pair of terminals for connecting wires.

We must add that the red block on the electrical diagram is designated X2, and the white block is marked as X1. Therefore, it will no longer be possible to confuse them. If you remember, of course.

As for the instrument panel, two types are used for the VAZ 2110 model. It all depends on the year of the car as there is an old version and an updated version.

  1. In old panels, devices are located symmetrically.
  2. The new instrument panel is characterized by two indicators being shifted to the right side - the coolant temperature and the fuel level in the tank.

Before you begin to solve the problem yourself, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the pinout of the instrument panel on the VAZ 2110. In other words, you should understand where which wiring leads, what it is intended for, what fuses are available, and so on.

All this can be easily found out using the information from the instruction manual. Having such visual literature at hand and the car in front of your eyes, you can correct typical dashboard faults without the help of specialists and special knowledge in electronics.

Fuse blown

As already mentioned, a malfunction of this panel element often leads to failure of the entire panel. You can find fuse F6 in the mounting block. If it does burn out, it is very important to identify the cause of the breakdown. Otherwise, the new part will repeat the fate of the previous part and will burn out in the same way. Often the cause of the breakdown lies in a banal electrical circuit short circuit. Once the initial problem has been identified and corrected, you simply need to replace the fuse with a new part.

By the way, often the malfunction of this part becomes the reason that the dashboard and turn signals on the VAZ-2110 do not work. So, if you encounter such a problem, you can safely change the fuse.

Instrument needles are jumping

It often happens that they simply start jumping on a scale from minimum to maximum. Typically, the cause of such a malfunction is a poor connection between the contact and ground. Its wire coming from the shield is fixed on the partition separating the engine compartment from the passenger compartment. You can find it by removing the radio from its socket. But if an alarm was installed on your car, most likely, the fastening of this wire was moved to a more convenient place for greater convenience. Usually, experts move it behind the interior trim, not far from the driver’s left foot.

Car owners can expect the same thing after installing a radio. At the moment of fixing its negative cable, perhaps the ground wire of the shield was poorly wrapped. As a result of this oversight, under the influence of vibrations transmitted to the car body, the cable could become loose. This happens very often, and for a long time car owners cannot understand why the dashboard on the VAZ-2010 does not work. It is worth saying that even specialists often wrap the mass wire poorly due to the fact that doing so is not entirely convenient.

If the fastening of this cable turns out to be of good quality, it is worth checking the shield itself. To do this, it must be removed from the place of fixation so that you do not have to disconnect the wires going to the pads.

You need to check the mass cable on the white block X1, going to the first contact. In addition, it is worth checking the voltage on pins 9, 6 and 10 - it should be at least 12 volts. In addition, be sure to pay attention to the condition of the tracks at the back of the panel, along which impulses are transmitted to consumers.

Broken ground contacts

This problem manifests itself on the panel by displaying incorrect information; the tachometer needle may drop below the current level. The needles of other instruments may also freeze , either permanently or for a short period of time. The panel backlight may also disappear, but the arrows will show the correct data.

Bolt for fixing ground wires from all devices

Through trial and error, it was found that these glitches can occur due to the fact that the ground contact is broken . Under the dashboard, near the driver’s right foot (near the gas pedal), there is a special mount to which ground wires from all instruments are fixed.

To solve such a malfunction in the operation of the VDO dashboard, you simply need to improve the contact . Unscrew the bolt at “8”, disconnect and clean all contacts suitable for it. To be safe, it is advisable to treat them with “electronic contact cleaner”. After this, all that remains is to connect the wires and screw the bolt back.

Bottom line of the route display

If you have stopped switching the parameters that are displayed in the bottom line of the route display (under the total or daily mileage), then the problem lies in the steering column switch.

It is responsible for switching between the following options:

  • current time;
  • outside air temperature;

The buttons on the switch work every once in a while

  • travel time (valid from the last reset);
  • average fuel consumption;
  • instantaneous fuel consumption (changes as the vehicle moves);
  • average speed since reset;
  • residual power reserve with the remaining fuel in the tank;
  • amount of gasoline consumed since reset.

Cigarette lighter failure

It is its malfunction that often causes the shield to fail. The fact is that many car owners turn on various devices through the cigarette lighter, for example, a special vacuum cleaner, chargers, pumps and other devices. Due to the fact that these gadgets require high current, either the socket itself or fuse F19 often breaks, as a result of which the instrument panel on the VAZ-2110 does not work.

In addition, the cigarette lighter may become damaged if left on for too long. In this case, you can return the instrument panel to functionality by disconnecting the socket block. But it is worth saying that such manipulation will be successful only if fuse F19 is functioning. If it does burn out, it must be replaced.

Traffic rules

According to the Rules of the Road, a driver in the dark is required to illuminate the side lights on his vehicle when moving. At this time, the instrument panel is also illuminated.

Causes and repairs

The left side parking lights and instrument panel lights are connected through fuse F1, and the right side lights through F11. Both are rated for 5 Amps.

Sometimes the backlight may not work. In this case, you need to check fuse F1, which is located in the passenger compartment on the driver's side in a special block. You also need to check fuse F11.

If the fuses are normal, you need to check all the wiring and lamps on the dimensions.

Tuning

This is what often causes the dashboard to malfunction. Perhaps the new shield was not fixed correctly, which is why it actually does not work. Either when installing the wiring, not all cables were connected, or they were simply bent. In such cases, only individual elements of the dashboard often stop functioning: for example, displays, battery, handbrake or oil pressure indicators, as well as the carburetor choke light. The instrument panel of the VAZ-2110 does not work after tuning - what to do in this case? The first thing to do is replace the wires. Usually, this allows you to easily solve the problem.

What should I do if, after installing a new panel, it does not work?

In rare cases, after connecting a new panel, it does not function. This is typical for parts from early releases that are found on sale. Usually these instrument clusters are released. To make a correct connection, you will need to change the routing of one wire.

Device reconnection diagram

The difference is in the connection of the contact coming from pin No. 20 of the combination plug. It should connect to pin No. 4 in the white block of the standard wiring. After carrying out such a manipulation, the “tidy” will come to life.

Diagnostics

It doesn’t matter at all whether the VAZ-2110 dashboard with an 8-valve injector or a 16-valve carburetor does not work; the first step is to diagnose the dashboard itself. After all, its serviceability does not depend in any way on the inside of the car.

Correct diagnosis involves performing several simple manipulations:

  • checking lamps and replacing faulty parts;
  • checking the wiring using an indicator or multimeter;
  • inspecting contacts and cleaning them from oxidation deposits;
  • checking fuses;
  • monitoring the performance of devices.

If the dashboard of a VAZ-2110 with a Euro installation does not work, you should check fuses F18, F19 and F1. In cases with gasoline units, you should also pay attention to parts with numbers: F6 and F10.

Description of lamps and indicators

The description of the indicators is deciphered by the numbers marked in the photo:

  • 1 – dial indicator of coolant temperature;
  • 3-4 – indicator lamps for turn signals;
  • 6 – dial indicator of fuel level in the gas tank;
  • 7 – if the indicator is constantly on, urgent refueling is needed;
  • 8 – if the indicator lights up, it means the dimensions are on;
  • 9 – monitoring the condition of the brake system;
  • 10 – headlight operation indicator;
  • 11 – daily mileage reset;
  • 12 – odometer display;
  • 13 — emergency lights are on, working in conjunction with turn signals;
  • 14 – it is necessary to check the engine;
  • 15 – second display, the time and temperature outside are displayed here;
  • 16 – correct battery charge;
  • 17 – parking brake activated;
  • 18 – when you turn on the ignition, it lights up, when you give gas it disappears;
  • 19 – only on the dashboard where the carburetor is used, it indicates that the air damper is closing.

Knowing the name of each symbol on the board, you can operate the car more comfortably.

Precautionary measures

When performing dashboard repairs, you should follow some rules:

  • You can change fuses only with the ignition off;
  • monitoring of devices must be carried out as carefully as possible to avoid short circuits;
  • Damaged elements should be soldered using a device with minimal power and a thin nozzle;
  • You need to remove and fix the shield very carefully so as not to inadvertently damage the fastenings.
