The heating temperature of the engine in the VAZ-2110 directly depends on the thermostat; this unit also affects the speed of warming up and the timely removal of heat from heated parts of the car. Therefore, when the thermostat fails, the engine either heats up too much or does not heat up at all, and the temperature inside the VAZ-2110 can be noticeably low.
Domestic cars are equipped with different thermostats; until 2003, old-style devices were installed; later they were replaced by new ones, which are considered the “warmest” for manual cars. If the thermostat has already been changed at a service station, it is possible that the unit from the Lada Grant was fixed - according to experts, a good option for the VAZ-2110.
An important part for replacing an old one in case of problems can be purchased at a specialized auto parts store or, if you are confident in the seller, in an online store. The latter method of purchasing is more troublesome, but if the seller is decent, it allows you to save money on good equipment.
Beginners are wondering: is it necessary to change the thermostat or can it be partially repaired? In most cases, the device is replaced, but if you understand the internal structure well, why not try to revive the unit yourself.
In any case, be prepared to replace one of the important elements that caused the design to malfunction.
What is a thermostat?
This is not a standard 6 "hole" thermostat
The thermostat itself is an important part in the engine cooling system. It is designed to ensure that the engine is cooled according to its needs.
For example, you started the engine “cold”, then at degrees from 80 to 90 a large circle opens and liquid enters the radiator and begins to cool the engine more intensively than in a small circle.
Thermostat operating principle
The thermostat itself consists of:
- Frame.
- Internal compartment.
- 2 pipes with valves.
- "Core". Thermoelement (copper powders, a mixture of granulated wax, graphite and aluminum in a special proportion).
- Valves.
How to identify a breakdown?
But there are also auxiliary signs: there is no heat in the cabin when it gets cold, a decrease in dynamic performance (power, speed), increased fuel consumption (about the passport consumption standards here).
Modification of the VAZ 2110 thermostat
Modifying the thermostat of the VAZ 2110 will improve the heating of the interior in cold weather, if with a standard thermostat it was necessary to warm up the engine, wait until the stove heats up, after the changes made the process will take less time. Let's consider what this procedure consists of. Why on the VAZ 2110 do they install the same part, but a six-hole one, instead of the factory five-hole thermostat, which is intended for a more modernized VAZ model called “Kalina”.
Even when installing a new part, modification of the VAZ 2110 thermostat is required. The differences between five- and six-hole thermostats lie not only in the sixth fitting, but also in the diameter of the bypass channel through which the coolant passes. The smaller the diameter of this channel, the better the stove heats up. Therefore, a six-hole thermostat with a narrow bypass channel is more popular.
If you have no desire to change a spare part, you want to modify the old five-hole VAZ 2110 thermostat, this work will not cause any difficulties.
Simply reduce the diameter of the bypass channel and the car will become noticeably warmer.
For this work, you will need an aluminum plate of the desired shape, which will easily cover the old bypass channel and have a smaller diameter of the drilled hole. This plate is fastened using cold welding or rivets.
The technology for modifying the six-hole thermostat for the tenth or twelfth VAZ model is absolutely similar to that described above, only you need to connect the heater return to the sixth fitting.
We can summarize: modification of the thermostat for the VAZ 2110 car makes it possible to more effectively heat the interior in winter.
You can modify the factory five-hole thermostat or install a six-hole thermostat, also making simple changes. As a result, the stove heats the air in the cabin faster, but the engine takes a little longer to warm up.
There are many more advantages, which is why car enthusiasts very often perform such actions.
It is not difficult to modify the thermostat yourself, but if for some reason you tend to doubt your own abilities, it is better to contact a specialist with extensive practical experience. This will significantly save time spent on upgrading your car.
Installation of a modified vehicle
On a VAZ 2110 you can easily install a more advanced thermostat from Granta 2190. But you should still know a little about the design of the heating/cooling system in Granta. Its scheme can be easily implemented on the “ten”.
- Original TS Grants 2190 from BEHR;
- The lower radiator hose is from Granta, but the upper one 21214 will also work, or simply matched to size;
- Tee from VAZ 2110 for the cooling system;
- The studs are 8 mm in length - like from the camshaft bed;
- Straight long stove pipe from the “ten”;
- Gasket for thermostat.
We act according to this plan:
- We change the lower radiator pipe to the one from Granta (or similar). You can leave the original one, but connect it to a suitable diameter at a right angle using a piece of pipe. However, remember - the more connections, the more opportunities for leaks;
- We connect the expansion tank pipe through a VAZ 2110 tee: one end goes to the drain from the heater radiator, the other end goes to the supply pipe;
- Drain the coolant;
- We change the studs to longer ones and install the Granta thermostat;
- We twist the temperature sensor.
Next comes a check to see if the modified heating system is working properly. Typically, the Grant vehicle is more stable, provides faster heating of the air in the cabin, and is not subject to temperature fluctuations.

How is the VAZ 2110 thermostat replaced?
The procedure flow is as follows:
- the car battery is dismantled;
- the plug is removed from the expansion tank;
- unscrew the drain plug located at the bottom of the radiator;
- The liquid is drained from the tank, after which the plug can be tightened;
- the hose clamps on the thermostat pipes are loosened;
- hoses are dismantled (both rear and front);
- unscrew the bolts (there are three of them) that secure the thermostat cover and remove it.
In order to remove the thermostat from the cover, it is best to install the latter in a bench vice (you will need to mount jaws or soft pads on them to protect the aluminum surface from scratches). After this, press down the thermostat fixing plate (the spring will resist, you will have to apply some force), turn it and remove it from the grooves. Now the device we are interested in can be easily removed. And in its place you can install a new one, proceeding in the reverse order.
Replacing the thermostat VAZ-2110
It is necessary to be able to dismantle the main element of the cooling system not only for its replacement, but also for periodic inspection. So prepare your tools:
- two canisters (clean, plastic, 5 liters);
- thoroughly washed plastic bottle;
- a medium-sized Phillips screwdriver;
- paint cone;
- wrenches (sizes 8 and 12).
Repair work is carried out according to the instructions:
- Disassembly should begin with the air filter housing. Using a size 8 wrench, unscrew the bolts holding it in place. There are only two of them.
- Carefully inspect the housing and remove the sensor located on it.
- After these procedures, the protective shell can be removed from the filter. Remove the filter itself.
- Immediately after carrying out the procedures described above, you will be able to see the thermostat. Loosen the clamp that was hidden under the body.
- Cut one plastic canister - remove one of its side walls so that the drain hole is located at the bottom. This way you will get a convenient container into which you can collect antifreeze from the pipes. Using a hole with a lid, you can easily transfer the liquid into a whole canister.
- Separate the neck from the plastic bottle.
- Place the cut canister under the pipes at the moments when you disconnect them. Do this in the following sequence:
- separate from the expansion tank;
- from the radiator;
- from the stove;
- from the motor.
- During this repair, you can immediately replace the pipes. Inspect them for wear and, if necessary, install new ones immediately.
- After removing the thermostat, a little more coolant will fall into the prepared canister, so do not remove the container ahead of time.
- Using a filter from a painting paper cone, strain the antifreeze into a clean canister.
- Install the new part and tighten all clamps. Pour coolant into the expansion tank. Assemble the air filter.
During the repair process, it is best to replace the antifreeze and air filter. Immediately after assembly, start the engine to remove any air pockets from the cooling system. You should not move away immediately; to do this, you will need to warm up the engine at idle speed.
Finally, check the fluid level in the expansion tank. If it falls, check the build quality. If necessary, add antifreeze.
The redistribution of fluid flows in the engine cooling system is controlled by a thermostat. Over time, the thermostat valve may jam on a large or small circulation circle, and the cooling system will not work correctly (engine overheating/underheating). How difficult is it to check and change the thermostat yourself?
Checking the Thermostat
How to check the thermostat. In fact, there are several ways to do this in different situations: Checking the thermostat at home:
To check the thermostat, lower it into a vessel with coolant, heat the vessel and use a thermometer to control the beginning of the opening of the main valve.
For reference :
At a temperature of 87±2°C, the thermostat bypass valve begins to move, opening the main pipe; in this case, part of the liquid circulates in a large circle through the radiator. At a temperature of about 102°C, the pipe opens completely and all the liquid circulates in a large circle. The stroke of the main valve must be at least 8 mm. The thermostat of the VAZ-2112 engine has an increased resistance of the bypass valve (throttle hole), which increases the flow of fluid through the heater radiator.
Checking the thermostat on a car:
When checking the thermostat on a car after starting a cold engine, the radiator outlet (lower) hose should remain cold for a while and then quickly warm up, indicating the start of coolant circulation in a large circle.
Checking the thermostat upon purchase:
Checking the thermostat in the store is very simple, just blow into the thermostat fitting. Thus, we will check how tightly the small circuit is closed when cold.
Removing the thermostat VAZ 2110
I think everyone knows where the thermostat is located; in extreme cases, you can find out from photographs. Before removing the thermostat, you need to drain the coolant (in detail). We show dismantling the thermostat using the example of a VAZ-2111 engine:
- Loosen the radiator outlet hose clamps.
- Loosen the clamps of the supply hose of the pump pipe and the hose connecting the thermostat to the outlet pipe.
- Remove thermostat.
The thermostat is installed in the reverse order. By the way, this photo report shows an old-style thermostat. For more productive operation of the heater, it is recommended to replace it with a new one (six hole), and if desired, the thermostat can be modified.
Replacement
Before you begin replacing the thermostat, you must purchase the necessary consumables. To work you will need:
- Thermostat from Lada Granta. The kit should include a gasket. Models with a plastic body are not suitable for replacement.
- A pipe for connecting to the lower “bathtub” of the radiator, also from Granta.
- Steel studs “M8”, at least 9 cm long. If possible, it is better to purchase stainless steel fasteners.
- Steel washer. Required for installation under a temperature sensor.
- Connecting clamps.
- Metal tee.
- Silicone-based sealant with a temperature threshold of at least 300 degrees.
Below is a step-by-step process for replacing a thermostat from Granta.
- Allow the power unit to cool.
- Drain some of the antifreeze into a container.
- Remove all drain pipes from the standard thermostat. The connections between the pipes should be checked for cracks. The inside of the pipes must be cleaned of dirt and oxidation.
- Unscrew the fastening studs. Before dismantling, it is necessary to clean the area where the pin enters the block. Aluminum often oxidizes the metal. The pin may break when unscrewed.
- Clean the seat from old gasket and sealant. It is better to clean it with a wooden strip so as not to deform the joint.
- Screw in the prepared studs. It is very important to lubricate the threads with grease. This way the fasteners will not oxidize in contact with aluminum. Reinstall the gasket. The factory gasket does not need to be lubricated with a sealant.
- Install the new circulation regulator in place.
- Install a pipe from the lower “bath” of the radiator to the engine drain.
- Plug the pipe from the throttle valve. For this, two steel clamps and an M10 bolt are used.
- Install all pipes. When installing, shorten the heating pipe by 5 centimeters and secure it. An uncut hose will stick out and will be difficult to install and then secure.
- Connect the drains from the heating system and expansion tank through a tee.
- Reinstall the temperature sensor.
- Pour the missing amount of antifreeze into the system.
- Start the power unit.
It is very important to coat all connections with sealant. This will prevent depressurization and protect the inner surface of the thermostat pipes and outlets.
For the VAZ-2110, the best choice would be a thermostat with a temperature threshold of 92 degrees. Such a regulator will more effectively warm up the car interior. When installing, you should carefully select antifreeze for such a thermocouple.
Signs of thermostat malfunctions and diagnostics
During operation, the thermostat valve is subject to operational and temperature loads, that is, it can fail for many reasons. Among the main ones:
- low-quality or used coolant (antifreeze);
- mechanical or corrosive wear of the valve drive, etc.
A thermostat malfunction can be determined by the following symptoms:
- The internal combustion engine of the car, without being subjected to special loads, overheats - the thermostat thermocouple has ceased to perform its functions. If everything is normal with the cooling fan, to check, dismantle the thermostat and check the functionality of the valve;
To check the thermostat on a VAZ 2110, you can use several methods, since there are several methods for diagnosing the thermostat for failure:
- Start the car and warm up the engine to the desired temperature, first opening the hood. Find the lower pipe coming from the thermostat and feel it for heat. If the thermostat is in good condition, the pipe will heat up quickly;
- Dismantle the thermostat and remove from it the thermoelement responsible for starting the coolant circulation. Place the thermocouple in water heated to a temperature of 75 degrees and keep it until the water warms up further (up to 90 degrees). In good condition, when the water is heated to 90 degrees, the rod from the thermoelement should extend.
If problems are found with the operation of the thermostat, it needs to be replaced. By the way, when buying a new thermostat, you need to check it by blowing into the fitting (no air should escape). Also, some owners, before installation, immerse the new device in hot water for insurance, as described above. This eliminates the risk of installing a faulty device.
Thermostat VAZ 2110 - change it yourself
Probably every more or less experienced driver knows that a thermostat is a device that is responsible for the competent redistribution of liquid flows in a car engine.
During active operation of the machine, this device may jam on a small or large circulation circle, which will cause underheating or overheating of the motor.
It is clear that a vehicle with a faulty cooling system cannot be used, which means that the owner of the car will have to replace the device that has failed.
But before that, you should make sure that such a replacement is really necessary. That is, you need to check the thermostat for functionality
This is done without dismantling the engine in this way: we start the engine and direct all our attention to the instrument panel, where the temperature of the cooling fluid is displayed. The main valve of the device we are interested in opens at a temperature from +83 to +87 ° C
If the engine has a lower temperature, the liquid moves in a small circle (that is, the valve is in a closed state).
You can determine whether the thermostat is working or not quite simply - touch the vehicle’s cooling radiator and its lower hose. If the hose feels colder to the touch, it means the device is in the closed position (there is no coolant flowing into the radiator). At 102 degrees, the radiator valve opens fully. In this case, the lower pipe and the upper zone of the radiator should be noticeably hot (but the lower zone is colder). If you do not feel the heating with your hand, it becomes clear that the thermostat needs to be changed.
How to replace a thermostat yourself
Replacing a faulty thermostat in a VAZ-2112 with 16 valves is a fairly simple matter, so even minor skills in car repair will help the car enthusiast to perform this operation on his own. The part is replaced in stages:
- Start work only with a cold engine to avoid getting burns on your hands.
- All liquid intended for cooling must be completely drained, since replacing the part involves disconnecting the pipe in which it accumulates. To avoid spilling liquid during this process, you should place a container of the appropriate size under the bottom of the car.
- For ease of operation, it is recommended to remove the hardened air filter housing.
- Using a screwdriver or wrench, unscrew the connectors that secure the hose to the thermostat. There should be two such hoses - one is for the radiator, the other is for the thermostat.
- Using a hex wrench, unscrew the bolts, in triplicate, that prevent the element cover from moving when the car is running. After removing the fasteners, you should simply carefully remove the part from its permanent place.
If, upon inspection of the cover, any defects are revealed in the sealing ring, for example, cracks or deformation, this will indicate that the ring has also become unusable and needs to be replaced.
All car parts should be assembled in the reverse order that was used during disassembly.
The information described indicates that replacing a faulty VAZ-2112 16-valve thermostat is an easy operation, and if you approach the event responsibly and carry out the process step by step, then everyone will be able to correctly replace the faulty part on their car.
Types of thermostats
Externally, if you take the thermostats of the Niva and VAZ 2101 (kopecks), the differences will not be visible. They have differences inside, the pipes are located differently.
Types of VAZ thermostats:
- Thermostat 2101. The valve began to block when it reached 80 degrees, and fully opened when it reached 95 degrees.
- Almost the same ones are installed on the VAZ Niva, only the angle between the pipes is about 180 degrees.
- The VAZ 2108 thermostat is installed on all VAZ models with carburetor engines of various modifications. The thermostat valves of front-wheel drive VAZs operate 7 degrees later than those of classic models.
- The thermostat of the VAZ 2110 is the same as the classic one, but the pipes are located in a mirror image. There is no small pipe for air outlet.
- The VAZ 2112 thermostat is made for VAZ injection engines. The valve opens when the temperature reaches 85 degrees.
Replacing the thermostat on an engine with a fuel injection system:
1. For more comfortable conditions for performing the above task, you will need to remove the battery.
2. Remove the plug from the expansion tank and unscrew the drain plug at the bottom of the radiator. Drain the liquid from there and screw the plug back on.
3. Next, loosen the two hose clamps on the thermostat socket cover pipes.
4. You will also need to remove the second rear hose clamp located on the water pump supply pipe.
5. Remove the front hose from the pipe.
6. When removing the rear hose, slide it along the water pump guide pipe.
7. Then unscrew the three bolts securing the cover, and then remove it and the thermostat.
8. The lid should be clamped in a vice; when performing this action, be careful and careful. The vice must have pads or jaws pre-installed in it to avoid damage to the aluminum cover.
9. Press the thermostat fixing plate downwards, overcoming the spring force. Rotate the plate in any convenient direction and remove it from engagement with the grooves. Remove the thermostat from the cover.
How to test a new thermostat?
10. Before you start installing a new thermostat, carry out the following actions on it: lower it into hot water, approximately 78–80 degrees and heat the water to 87–90 degrees, while stirring it constantly.
11. For a normally functioning thermostat at this temperature, the rod of the silicone element should begin to extend. If this does not happen, it means that it is not suitable and you need to buy another one.
12. Correct installation of the thermostat occurs in the reverse order of removal
When performing installation, pay attention to the rubber ring in the groove of the socket. If it turns out to be torn, deformed or has lost its elasticity, replace it
13. The last point in our work will be filling the cooling system with liquid. It should be poured to the upper edge of the expansion tank fastening belt (into the expansion tank). Then tighten the plug and start the engine.
One of the important points is to check that there is no leakage of coolant that may occur through the connections of the device’s pipes. Warm up the vehicle engine at idle speed to normal operating temperature to avoid air pockets in the system.
If you have a carburetor engine installed on your car, we offer you another way to perform this work.
The role of the thermostat in the engine cooling system
The engine cooling system is divided into two circuits: large and small. The small circuit encloses the internal elements of the engine and the heater radiator for heating the interior. The large circuit includes the small one, but in addition passes through the cooling radiator located in front of the engine. Thus, when the coolant temperature reaches a set level, the valve opens the flow into a large circuit and the antifreeze is cooled by oncoming air, entering the cooling radiator. If there is not enough oncoming air, the engine temperature sensor transmits a command to the control unit, which in turn turns on the cooling fan located in front of the radiator.
As soon as the air entering the radiator cools the liquid to a certain temperature, the valve closes and the antifreeze again flows through the small circuit. As a result, the engine temperature is maintained in operating condition.
How to Install a New Thermostat
If the best device for the VAZ-2110 has already been purchased, it’s time to start installation, especially since you can carry out the procedure yourself. You will need:
- gasket former - cost about 300 rubles;
- Cooling system cleaner – 150 rubles;
- pipes going to the stove radiator - 230 rubles;
- thermostat (in our case it’s Pramo) – 12,000 rubles;
- green antifreeze with a volume of 10 liters - up to 900 rubles;
- hairpin M8 at 70 m.
First you need to drain the used antifreeze. Place a 7-liter container under the drain hole and wait until the liquid is completely drained into the container. After this, you should clean the cooling system; for this it is best to use a special cleaning agent. Acids, soda and vinegar do not give such a good result, and lactic acid can ruin the internal parts of the car.
Cost and part numbers of the thermostat for the VAZ-2110
If the thermostat is detachable, only the top cover with the valve can be replaced.
As for purchasing a new thermostat for a VAZ-2110, a feature of this model is the ability to replace only one starting element. It will cost twice as much.
On the left is a 5-hole thermostat, on the right is a 6-hole thermostat.
When buying a thermostat, you need to remember that they come in old and new models. If your car has an old-style part installed, but the store only has new-style parts in stock, don’t be upset. If you have some ingenuity and a hacksaw for metal, the new part can be installed perfectly in place of the old part.
Adjusting the old model to the new one
Installation of a 6-hole thermostat.
To do this, you just need to saw off a piece of the pipe that comes from the pump, and then disconnect the piece from the old part. After these manipulations, the new thermostat will fit perfectly into the car’s cooling system.
Since when purchasing spare parts for domestic cars there is a chance of purchasing a defective part, before purchasing a thermostat you can check it for leaks. To do this, you just need to blow hard into the fitting. If the housing is sealed, then air should remain inside. If air comes out, then such a part is not worth purchasing.
The original thermostat, which was installed at production, has article number 2110–1306010. It is inexpensive, but its quality is not stable. Most VAZ-2110 owners prefer to purchase analogues that last much longer.
All foreign analogues are much more expensive, but by installing them, owners are deprived of the headaches associated with the operation of the thermostat. Fenox, Pekar, Finwhale, Luzar parts are in demand.

There are no problems with the heater. In winter it warms with a bang. There are three options.
Option 1. Cover this place with glue, for example cold welding. And he doesn’t give a damn. But doubts gnaw at me. Somewhere on a long trip this whole structure will fall apart. There are no wolves in our forests. But the bears appeared. They say they swam across the Volga from the north from the Kostroma region.
Option 2. Replace the thermostat with a standard 6-hole one. Price approximately 600 rub.
Option 3. Replace the thermostat with a non-standard 5-hole one. From VAZ 2110. Price about 1000 rubles. According to reviews, this thermostat seems to be better. Replacing the thermostat on VAZ 2110, VAZ 2111, VAZ 2112
Welcome! Thermostat - thanks to it, the engine can heat up very quickly, and also practically not warm up at all, all this happens for the following reasons, in the thermostat itself there is a so-called valve, this valve is also filled with a special substance thanks to which the thermostat determines when it needs to fully open and when it needs to close completely, we all already know that when the engine is running (maybe you paid attention), the car heats up very quickly up to about 80 degrees, and after 80 degrees the engine heats up a little less, and after 94 degrees it does not practically does not heat up unless you are stuck in a traffic jam for many hours, the whole point is that the thermostat valve releases coolant into a large circle when it reaches 80 c°, and after 94 c° the liquid goes out to the same circle but only circulates the liquid in a small circle the circle stops altogether and as a result the car heats up less. Note! In order to replace the thermostat with a new one, you will need to stock up on: A screwdriver and one hexagon of approximately “5”!
Note! In order to replace the thermostat with a new one, you will need to stock up on: A screwdriver and one hexagon of approximately “5”!
Where is the thermostat located? It is located just below the air filter housing, you can see it very easily; to do this, open the hood of your car, then look for this same air filter housing in the engine compartment and after finding it, look a little lower, so to speak, under it, and that same thermostat will be installed there (Or rather its cover, and this unit itself is located inside the cover), for example, the location of the cover is also shown in the photo below:
When should you change the thermostat? It is replaced only if it has stopped opening the valve that releases coolant to a large circle, and also if it has left the valve in the open position and this valve is jammed.
Note! In the first case, if the thermostat does not release liquid in a large circle, then the car will begin to heat up very much, in no case allow it to overheat and, if possible, replace the thermostat as soon as possible, especially if the engine of your car operates at elevated temperatures, then your cylinder head gasket will gradually burn out, and the friction in your car’s engine will also increase, because as we all know from the law of physics, the higher the temperature, then the metal expands accordingly, and the larger the metal becomes, the larger it becomes its friction, so watch the engine overheating very carefully.
In the second case, if your valve gets stuck in the open position, although this happens rarely, you still decide for yourself whether you need to replace the thermostat or not, because if the valve is in the open position, then the engine will practically not heat up , but if it’s winter outside, it would still be better to replace this unit with a new one!
How to check whether the thermostat is working or not? There are several ways to check, namely with this unit removed, and you can also check it directly without removing it from the car at all, to do this, just start the car and warm it up to operating temperature and after warming up, get out of the car (By the way, open the hood again before leaving) and look into the engine compartment, there you will find the lower pipe that comes from the thermostat, so feel this pipe thoroughly, it should be slightly warm at the very beginning, and then gradually warm up (Depending on the temperature of the engine).
Note! If it turns out that the lower pipe does not heat up at all but constantly remains cold, then this indicates that the thermostat has become unusable and it is time to replace it with a new one, by the way, due to this course of circumstances, the engine will heat up very strongly and quickly, so if all the symptoms are obvious, then the thermostat has really become unusable, and by the way, about such a check, see in more detail in the video clip below:
If you bought a new thermostat or found an old one in your garage and want to find out if it works or not, then watch the interesting video below that explains in detail how to check this unit separately from the engine:
When to think about replacement
If the device has stopped opening the valve that releases coolant to a large circle, or the valve is simply jammed and does not close on its own, then you need to think about replacing the Grant thermostat on the VAZ 2110. If you do not replace the device in time, negative consequences may occur.
If the fluid cannot circulate in a large circle, the car will overheat. This should not be allowed and, if possible, the thermostat from the Granta VAZ 2110 injector 16 valves should be replaced as soon as possible. Overheating can cause the cylinder head gasket to burn out. Moreover, the friction of the car itself will increase.
If the valve gets stuck in the open position, which is extremely rare, the motor will not be able to heat up. It is also advisable to replace the device.
Thermostat failure
Like any other device, the thermostat on a VAZ 2110 car has its own signs of malfunction. In particular, if it fails, the operating temperature of the engine increases significantly
Please note that on VAZ cars, after the temperature-sensitive element breaks down, the valve moves to a position in which the liquid circulates in a smaller circle
In other words, it does not enter the radiator. If this happened in the summer, then you will not see anything pleasant in such a breakdown. The most effective way to slightly cool the engine is to open the heater and turn on the blower fan at maximum speed.
Moreover, the engine will overheat not only while driving through a populated area at low speeds, but also when driving at higher speeds, when it would seem that the entire engine compartment is being blown in an increased mode.
But if you experience such symptoms on a VAZ 2110, you should not immediately blame the thermostat. It is quite possible that you have confused the failure of the fan switch sensor and the thermostat itself. On fuel-injected cars, the temperature in the thermostat housing is measured (the photo shows the location of the temperature sensor).
The electronic control unit, as well as the device in the panel in front of the driver, receives a signal from it. If the car’s fan operation is controlled through an electronic control unit, then the above-described circuit works. But on old VAZ 2110 and similar cars, a second sensor is used, which only works with the fan.
It is located in the cooling radiator housing. As a rule, it is connected to the negative power circuit without any switching devices, for example, an electromagnetic relay. As a result, the contacts inside the sensor burn and premature failure occurs.
Design of LUZAR thermostats
The terms should be distinguished:
- thermostat in a broad sense (car part, thermostat in a housing, thermostat as a “function”)
- thermostat in the “commodity” sense (a replaceable part of the thermostat, can be either a thermostat in the housing or a thermoelement; what is sold as a thermostat for a given machine)
- thermoelement (“working” part of the thermostat, in some cases may coincide with the name of the thermostat in the “commodity” sense)
- temperature sensor (the executive part of the thermostat is part of the thermoelement; it is a brass cylinder with a filler that expands when heated)
An automobile thermostat consists of a temperature sensor, which is a brass cylinder with a filler (technical paraffin or thermal wax), which expands when heated, with a rod on which spring-loaded plates of the main and bypass valves are placed; the temperature sensor is rigidly fixed to the frame, through which the thermoelement can be installed in the thermostat housing. The valve discs have rubber seals.
Automotive thermostats can be cased or uncased, depending on the design laid down by the designer of the engine.

- modern automotive industry, with the increasing complexity of automobile engines, is switching to the use of electronic thermostats, where temperature control is carried out by sensors, and the thermostat valves are controlled by micromotors (LUZAR does not produce electronic thermostats)
- Many modern engines have not one, but two or more thermostats - for non-uniform temperature control in different parts of the engine.
How to recognize a malfunction?
The device changes in two cases:
- The main valve does not open and does not allow coolant to circulate in a large circle. In such a situation, the engine quickly overheats, which can cause its failure. If nothing is done, the cylinder head gasket burns out, and due to the rise in temperature and expansion of the metal, the friction of the pistons against the cylinder walls increases.
- The valve jammed and remained open all the time. With such a malfunction, the engine practically stops heating or gains operating temperature slowly. If this happens in winter, then replacing the thermostat is mandatory.
Thus, the signs of a broken thermostat valve are as follows:
- Overheating of the power unit;
- Slow increase in temperature, and when operating in difficult conditions - boiling of the coolant;
- Increased fuel consumption.
As a rule, all these signs appear simultaneously.
