We study what boxes are installed on the new Volkswagen Tiguan 2nd generation
The first generation Volkswagen Tiguan was one of the most popular crossovers in its class, especially the restyled version. The advantages of the car included a wide selection of transmissions, both robotic and the presence of a standard automatic transmission torque converter, a wide selection of gasoline and diesel engines, as well as one of the best all-wheel drive systems. Among the shortcomings, one could note the modest size and small volume of the luggage compartment. The second generation of the German crossover, which should go on sale on the Russian market, retained all the advantages of its predecessor, while the new product got rid of the shortcomings that the owners of previous Tiguans complained about.
Potential owners of the new 2nd generation Volkswagen Tiguan are offered several types of transmissions to choose from:
We invite you to get to know each version a little closer.

Tiguan with manual transmission
Despite the fact that 2022 is just around the corner and a huge percentage of car owners have recognized the splendor of automatic transmissions, there are still drivers who prefer classic mechanics. Its advantages can be considered:
- control depends entirely on the driver;
- fast gear shifting compared to automatic transmission;
- lower fuel consumption compared to automatic transmission;
- the ability to tow a car;
- reliability;
- ease of maintenance.
Judging by the reviews of owners of Tiguans with manual transmission, no one had any problems with this transmission, which indicates its reliability.
Several versions and trim levels with manual transmission will be available in Russia:
- 1.4 125 hp – 1,459,000 rubles;
- 1.4 150 hp 4motion – 1,659,000 rubles.
Comfortline
- 1.4 125 hp – 1,559,000 rubles.
It is worth noting that European drivers got a wider variety of engines, which include a 2.0-liter diesel engine with a power of 150 hp; cars with this engine and gearbox can have front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
DQ250
The DQ250 is another asset of the VAG concern. The 6-band DSG received a wet clutch. The internal elements of the unit are in an oil bath, so they do not overheat and are not so subject to wear.
Good endurance and the ability to work with significant torque allowed the robot to drive vehicles with all-wheel drive. In terms of its characteristics, the DSG is in many ways superior to the CVT. This is an economical unit with smooth gear shifting.

Flaws
Car owners complain about an unpleasant abrupt start from a standstill. At the same time, the gear change is very noticeable. Similar behavior of the robot was noticed when driving uphill or when reversing. The symptoms disappear as soon as the box warms up.
In addition, when idle in traffic jams, when the driver presses/releases the gas pedal, the robot gives a small kick. Drivers are advised not to stand idle for a long time in Drive mode, but to immediately switch to Neutral.
Well, there was also constant twitching and nose-nodding when switching from first to second gear. Therefore, the driver, in order to avoid unnecessary discomfort, has to press the gas pedal as gracefully as possible.
Volkswagen Tiguan with DSG
Manufacturers decided to completely abandon the classic automatic transmission in favor of robotic DSG.
DSG-6 will be installed on :
- 1.4 125 hp – 1,559,000 rubles;
Comfortline
- 1.4 150 hp – 1,669,000 rubles;
- 1.4 150 hp 4motion – 1,769,000 rubles;
- 1.4 150 hp – 1,829,000 rubles;
- 1.4 150 hp 4motion – 1,929,000 rubles;
DSG-7 will be available on :
Comfortline
- 2.0 TDI 150 hp 4motion – 1,859,000 rubles;
- 2.0 180 hp 4motion – 1,909,000 rubles;
- 2.0 TDI 150 hp 4motion – 2,019,000 rubles;
- 2.0 180 hp 4motion – 2,069,000 rubles;
- 2.0 220 hp 4motion – 2,139,000 rubles.
Moreover, it is worth noting that this is not the “breaking” DSG7 that many Volkswagen owners have in their nightmares, but rather, on the contrary, the new product is equipped with one of the most reliable robotic transmissions with two clutches, indexed DQ500. This gearbox has a “wet” clutch (while the DSG-7 with a dry clutch, especially the first versions, is considered unreliable) and is capable of “digesting” up to 600 Nm of torque in stock. The exact same transmission is installed on the sports versions of the Audi RS3, RS Q3 and TT RS.
If you are a calm driver and your plans do not include chip tuning of the Tiguan, then the version with a 1.4 liter engine and DSG-6 will be the best option. As practice shows, with proper operation and timely maintenance, a six-speed robot does not cause any problems to its owners up to 200,000 km.
For more active drivers with a “ragged” driving style, the version equipped with DSG-7 DQ500 will definitely be the best choice. Moreover, its safety margin will allow you to increase the engine power in the future, without fear of failure.
In 2022, sales of the Skoda Karoq crossover will start in Russia, which in its characteristics and dimensions is similar to the Tiguan. On our portal you can find out what gearboxes are installed on the Skoda Karok. By the way, the choice is almost completely similar to its German counterpart.
As for the overall impression of the car, it has become significantly better than its predecessor. The first thing that catches your eye is the appearance of a new style, which we could see on the Passat b8. Another important change was the increase in dimensions, which made it possible to increase the space in the cabin and the volume of the luggage compartment. Let us remember that with all the advantages of the first Tiguan, excellent handling and decent performance on light off-road conditions, the disadvantage was its modest dimensions in which it was inferior to its competitor. With the advent of the second generation, without too much modesty, we can say that a leader has emerged in the compact crossover segment. All of the above pluses include an interior with standard ergonomics, however, VAG cars have never had any problems with this. All this led to a significant increase in price; now a Tiguan in a “good” configuration with a 2.0 liter engine and all-wheel drive costs the same as its older brother, the Touareg, cost 3 years ago. If the price tag is compared with classmates, then the price is not so high.
DQ500
A modification of the robot DSG7-0BT/0BH is installed on the Tiguan. This is one of the best representatives of transmissions from the VAG concern.
Since this DSG was released 7 years after the first robot, in 2009, it absorbed the experience and best technologies of the manufacturers. Not only VAG specialists, but also American engineers worked on it.
The 7-speed gearbox with two wet clutches can withstand significant torque, which sometimes reaches up to 600 Nm. It is not surprising that the unit was installed on powerful passenger cars, commercial vehicles and minivans.
Design
DSG7-0BT/0BH is a preselective mechanism with two input shafts, which are located one inside the other. Each of them has individual gears and synchronizer clutches that correspond to odd and even rows. Hydraulic cylinders operate the forks, which engage/disengage the clutch. Mechatronics is responsible for the movement and pressure of the hydraulic working fluid.
Principle of operation
The box instantly, in less than 0.01 seconds, switches to the next gear without loss of torque. This effect is achieved due to the fact that the gears of all gears of one of the rows, even or odd, are always in mesh. At this time, the clutches of the second row are in the readiness stage. The selector handle changes gear and the load is transferred to these gears. Thanks to this, the gearbox changes gears very smoothly without wasting a lot of fuel.
In addition, the robot adapts to the driving style. It can work both softly and harshly. It will only take a short time to adapt.
The unit is serviced once every 60,000 km. It is recommended to fill it with oil G 052 182.

Flaws:
- heavy weight;
- vulnerable mechatronics solenoid valves;
- high cost of the box;
- a heat exchanger that gets dirty quickly, which requires cleaning after three to five years (the unit often needs to be replaced).
