Installing an automatic transmission on a Lada Priora car - which gearboxes are suitable, step-by-step instructions for replacing the gearbox yourself

Installing an automatic transmission on a Priora is the dream of many prior drivers, because the standard VAZ 2182 robotic transmission (or AMT) installed on this car is not very convenient to use, and is noticeably inferior in reliability to a traditional hydraulic automatic transmission. In addition, even a serviceable AMT often twitches, and its thoughtfulness when starting to move has already become legendary

Next, we will look at all the advantages and disadvantages of installing a full-fledged automatic transmission on the Lada Priora, and also tell you:

  • how to install an automatic on a Priora;
  • how much such work will cost;
  • what kind of automatic transmission can be installed.

It is important to consider how to legitimize such a change in the traffic police.

Installing an automatic transmission on a VAZ 2114

— As practice shows, the best option for a VAZ 2114 car is an automatic transmission from a Toyota Camry car. Previously, the automatic transmission from Toyota Camry undergoes a major overhaul with the replacement of worn parts.

— Installing an automatic transmission on a VAZ 2114 begins with preparing the car for such a replacement. The air intake system is removed from the engine compartment, the front wheels are removed, the suspension and steering gear are disassembled, and the axle shafts are removed.

“Then it’s the engine’s turn. The engine is completely removed downwards from the engine compartment using a dolly.

— Preparing the engine for installation of a new box begins with removing the brackets that have become unnecessary for attaching the transmission to the body.

New brackets will be installed instead.

— We are starting to prepare other components of the car for the installation of an automatic transmission. It is necessary to install an additional radiator for the box cooling system.

— At this time, another mechanic is dismantling the manual transmission of the VAZ 2114 and preparing a place for docking the engine with the automatic transmission.

— Now it’s the turn of the clutch and flywheel. These details are no longer needed.

— Next, it is necessary to carry out an important operation to refine the angular velocity joints. The diameter of the axle shafts is reduced on a special machine. Without this work, joining the VAZ axle shafts to the new gearbox will be impossible.

— Now it’s the turn of the new flywheel, with this operation the process of installing a new gearbox on the old engine begins. Install a new box on the engine.

— The key operation is to attach the new box to the flange of the VAZ 2114 engine. It must fit exactly where the old box is attached.

— It is necessary to adjust the seats to the engine housing and gearbox for a tighter fixation of the brackets.

— Now install the box together with the engine in the engine compartment of the car.

— All that remains is to connect the electrical wiring harnesses of the transmission control unit to the vehicle’s on-board network. And also carry out a complex of installation work in the cabin.

The following video talks about installing automatic transmissions on VAZ cars.

If you need to move quickly and comfortably, it is recommended to use the services of a taxi in St. Petersburg. Qualified driver, reasonable prices and quality service. A nice fact is that you can order a taxi to the airport online.

Car acceleration

Acceleration of the car is accompanied by the monotonous sound of the engine running at the same speed, which causes the feeling of a burnt out clutch. That is why, for some, this causes hostility towards CVTs. But the CVT VAZ is free of this drawback. Up to 3000 rpm, even with the gas pedal fully pressed, the engine spins up almost synchronously with the acceleration. It feels like acceleration occurs in one, smoothly increasing gear. And after overcoming this milestone, a sudden increase in revolutions occurs, which is accompanied by a noticeable increase in acceleration - as if a classic stepped automatic transmission was under the hood and the Kick-down mode was activated. To install the CVT on the VAZ, one of the mounting points of the internal combustion engine had to be moved to the body.

Despite this, vibrations have become noticeably less. If with a “mechanics” the engine skips at the moment of starting, which causes shaking, then with a variator this effect is noticeable to a much lesser extent. The speed is maintained automatically and drops less frequently into the “critical” zone.

Automatic transmission on VAZs - history and modern technologies

A modern car simply must have options and configurations with an automatic transmission. Therefore, in most cases, self-respecting companies either completely switch to automatic transmissions of various types, or leave mechanics only as a cost-cutting factor for the basic version. Today, the world of modern cars is immersed in automatic machines. There are robots, CVTs, classic automatic transmissions, AMT and other options for automatic gear shifting, but for VAZ six years ago such technologies were real space. However, the development of the first Russian-made robotic box began back in 2007, when an inexpensive alternative to Japanese automatic machines was needed for the VAZ 2116 project. But the car was frozen due to lack of funds, and along with it, the development of the robot was frozen.

In 2009, Datsun, a close partner of AvtoVAZ, financed the creation of a budget AMT gearbox, which was supposed to be a cheaper version of the automatic transmission than the Japanese versions already installed on some Datsun cars. A year later the box was ready, it immediately began to pass tests on Priors. However, this is not the only option for an automatic transmission used on VAZs. Granta needed a version with a machine gun, but the domestic robot was not yet ready. Therefore, budget Grants are equipped with a simple Japanese automatic transmission from Jatco. This is a traditional automatic machine that allows you to fully adequately use all the functions of the machine and is a fairly reliable unit.

In the history of the concern there were many different experiments with automatic transmissions, but the cars did not go into production. Therefore, Lada Granta is considered a pioneer in this matter. The car received a good box from Jatco, and this is one of the main advantages, since all domestic developments at that time were too crude. However, around that same time, the Russian robot began to be installed on the Priora, but we will talk about it below. Assessing the features of the Lada Granta with an automatic transmission from the Japanese company Jetco, you can notice the following important features of the equipment:

The new Lada Vesta is equipped with Russian-developed AMT robotic gearboxes, which have a history of more than ten years in the AvtoVAZ engineering department. Before this, the boxes were tested on Priors and received a lot of questions from customers, but the concern claims that the box was seriously modified before installation on Vesta. Rumor has it that AMT may soon replace gearboxes on all versions of VAZ cars, except for the basic versions. It’s too early to talk about such a success of the robot, you should watch the work of the new box. Experts who managed to test the new robot say the following about it:

Design features of the “automatic machine”

Instead of a manual gearbox handle, an electromagnetic coil is installed, with the help of which the automatic gear shift mode is changed, and the clutch disc is also eliminated. The weight of the VAZ 2109 car increased by 15 kilograms after installing the variator. The transfer device is located in place of traditional mechanics using a special gasket. It is designed to transmit torque up to 145 Nm and easily develops to 130 Nm. All special parts that were needed for installation were developed at the aircraft factory.

Is it possible to install an automatic transmission on an old VAZ?

Many owners of previous generations of domestic cars are wondering whether it is possible to install an automatic transmission purchased at a disassembly in a car and get a lot of pleasant driving sensations. You can find many service stations that provide similar services, but not a single specialist will give you a recommendation to change the transmission to an automatic in any car. This is not only dangerous, but also quite arrogant, because when installing an automatic transmission on a car, the plant makes a lot of changes to the car, working on the chassis and other structural elements. It is impossible to install an automatic on an old car instead of a manual for many reasons:

If you are willing to put up with such hassles and can also sacrifice your old car, then you can experiment and write a magazine article or even a whole book about your experience. But in terms of completing this task in order to obtain comfort, ease of travel and other positive qualities, it is better to immediately forget. There are precedents for more or less successful installation of various automatic transmissions on a VAZ, but these are far from frequent cases, but rather a happy accident. Therefore, you should abandon the idea of remaking a car, and if you do engage in such a process, then do not drive an experimental car onto a public road. We offer a small test of the version of Lada Kalina 2 with an automatic transmission:

Is it worth it?

The Lada Priora has been out of production for 2 years now, and the first model appeared back in 2007, so the cost of a relatively new car exceeds 350 thousand rubles, and a ten-year-old Priora in good condition can be sold for 200–300 thousand. If we add to this the costs of purchasing parts, re-equipment and paperwork, without which it is impossible to install an automatic transmission on a Priora, then the total cost will increase by 1.5–2 times and it will not be possible to sell such a car without serious losses.

Therefore, installing an automatic transmission is justified only if the car is dear to the owner not only as a means of transportation, but also as some kind of symbol. If you decide to install a machine gun on the Priora yourself, then, in addition to purely technical issues, you will have to independently comply with the requirements of Russian legislation and interact with the traffic police and other structures, which does not add to your moral and mental health. That is why most of those who want to carry out such an upgrade agree to overpay 20-50 thousand to the intermediary so that he takes care of all the paperwork.

If this is just a means of transportation, then by selling your car and adding 50-100 thousand, you can buy a car in the same condition, but noticeably better equipped and without any problems with documents.

Let's sum it up

Russian developments in the field of automatic transmissions have become one of the best options for technical progress that we could expect from AvtoVAZ. The company received a big push forward when other cars on the market began to rise in price. Today VAZs have truly become the most attractive offerings in terms of price and technology. But we can safely say that in technical terms, the cars are not inferior to their budget rivals from other countries.

Granta, Kalina and Vesta with automatic transmission, as well as Priora and the planned AvtoVAZ models, received excellent reviews from buyers and became targets for purchase from many potential motorists. The flow of investments into the company is increasing today, sales of new cars also continue to grow, so we can safely say that the concern will be able to continue to develop and grow well in the future. Do you think the automatic transmission options installed on the VAZ are reliable?

Changing the oil

According to the documentation, the lubricant component in VAZ 2110 engines and transmissions must be changed every 15 thousand kilometers or at least once a year.

So, we need to warm up the engine well and prepare the required oil and, preferably, a new oil filter, as well as the tools necessary for the job.

gearbox housing 2110

To drain the waste, you will need to unscrew the plug from the oil pan. Next, within 10-15 minutes, the oil is drained into a special container, which will need to be prepared in advance. Then the drain plug returns to its original position and is screwed tightly. Now you can replace the old oil filter with a new one (if necessary).

Now that the old oil has been drained, pay attention to its color and presence of inclusions. If the oil is dark brown in color and to the touch contains various types of inclusions such as metal dust or pieces of dirt, then the transmission will need to be flushed

For this purpose, special solutions are used, which are poured into the engine and gearbox before new oil. In this case, you will need to drive the car with such a solution for a short time and not quickly, five minutes along the garage will be enough, and then drain the mixture and the dirt that it has collected in the same way as described for the process of draining the “working off”.

In order to fill with fresh oil, you will need to remove the filler cap. In this case, from 3 to 4 liters of oil are poured into the engine, depending on the readings of the dipstick. Ideally, the oil level is between the min. marks. and max.

These marks are marked on the dipstick as the minimum and maximum values. Next, you will need to start the engine and wait until the oil light (or oil pressure light) goes out. After this, turn off the engine, check the oil level and, if necessary, remove excess or add more oil.

There are times when the light bulb just won't go off. In such cases, it is better to check the quality of the oil filter or replace it if it was not changed during the replacement process.

Where is the automatic transmission installed on a VAZ?

POSSIBLE FAULTS

Despite the imperfect operation, the VAZ 2114 gearbox, when used correctly, is distinguished by good endurance and durability. If you do not hesitate to prevent and promptly eliminate breakdowns, repairing it is not expensive.

Let's consider the main gearbox malfunctions that the owner of the fourteenth may encounter:

  1. Lack of speed fixation when switching. If the speeds are out of whack, the cause is most likely worn teeth on the gears and clutch. Accelerated wear of these parts is caused by incorrect gear shifting and non-compliance with the speed limit. The problem is resolved by replacing the gears.
  2. The gear shift lever is tight. The reasons are mechanical damage to the teeth of the lever fixing on the hinge or wear of the reaction rod; it’s also a good idea to check the integrity of the plastic parts of the gearbox drive;
  3. The VAZ 2114 gearbox is humming. Most often, the gearbox is humming in neutral gear. First of all, you need to check and, if necessary, add oil (in general, the box may hum due to the use of low-quality lubricants). If the oil is normal, the problem is wear of the bearing on the input shaft, which can only be determined through diagnostics or by disassembling the gearbox;
  4. Crunching sound when changing speed. Here it is necessary to change the worn out synchronizer, and it must be changed immediately after the problem has been discovered, because if you tighten it, the gear unit will completely fly off;
  5. Knock. The gearbox on a VAZ 2114 can knock both under load and without it, and in any gear. The cause of the knocking noise is a damaged drive gear of the problematic transmission.

One of the key factors for the trouble-free operation of gearbox number fourteen is the use of high-quality lubricants. The most suitable option is GL-4 mineral oil. It is not cheap, but it does its job at 5+; when using mineral oil, VAZ gearbox repairs are usually required extremely rarely.

Most VAZ 2114 owners agree that the best gearbox oil is 75W90. It is distinguished by greater fluidity than typical gearbox oils, due to which the lubricant better gets into those places of the gearbox, the lubrication of which is provided exclusively by splashing. Good options for 75W90 are Hypoid-Getriebeoil TDL and Liqui Moly Vollsynthetisches Getriebeoil (GL-5).

Checking the oil level should be carried out every three weeks. In the gearbox, the fourteenth gear is placed vertically, the topmost is the fifth, it is the one that is most susceptible to failure due to lack of lubrication, so it is always necessary to fill in oil to the maximum mark, and best of all - 200-250 ml. more than the required norm.

Tuning the VAZ 2109 transmission

The classic transmission of all VAZs is manual. It is quite reliable, cheap to maintain and well suited for use on domestic roads.

Upgraded car

There are several popular types of tuning for manual transmissions. They appeared as a banal need to improve the performance of the car. The main work packages include:

Let's take a closer look at one of the tuning options. Replacing the rocker with a short-throw one is a useful tuning that will significantly simplify gear shifting. We all know that the lever of the “nine” and most other VAZ cars is absolutely inconvenient. It has a huge backlash, which simply has a terrible effect on the accuracy of gear shifting. If men with long hands can still cope with it without any critical effort, then women will have a very difficult time with it.

The easiest way out of the situation is to install a short-stroke cardan from the Lada Kalina on the 2109. Such tuning will cost you approximately 1,500 rubles. Along with the cardan, you will have to get a boot from the same model, because it won’t be original with it.

The necessary tools for work are a set of keys, a slotted screwdriver and a hammer. It will also be very good to have an assistant.

Disassembling the gearbox

In the situations described above, a simple gearbox adjustment will be sufficient. This is much better than repairing the VAZ 2110 gearbox, disassembling and assembling the gearbox.

Procedure for disassembling the gearbox:

  1. Remove the oil indicator from the gearbox. Unscrew the bolts that hold the clutch cable.
  2. Unscrew the bolts that hold the back cover. The lid is hermetically sealed, so when removing it, you can use a hammer.
  3. To prevent the shafts from turning while disassembling the gearbox, turn on the third or fourth speed. Then unscrew the bolt that secures the fifth gear.
  4. Remove the fifth gear and fork together.
  5. Afterwards, remove the gear from the secondary shaft and the fork. Then remove the plate that protects the bearings.

Having started repairing the VAZ 2110 gearbox, after all the steps described above, it is necessary to disassemble the crankcase and the operating mechanism. Let's get started:

  1. We unscrew the spring plugs that hold the gear rods. Once the plugs are unscrewed, the end balls will fall out of the holes. We do the same with the plug that holds the reverse gear. If the balls have not fallen out of the holes, you can get them out using a magnetic screwdriver.
  2. Next, we unscrew the bolts that secure the gearbox housing to the clutch housing. After the bolts are unscrewed, you can use a screwdriver to disconnect the crankcases.
  3. Next step. Unscrew the rod from the first and second gear fork.
  4. We do the same with gears third, fourth and fifth, respectively. To remove the rod, it must be removed together with the gear shift parts.
  5. You need to remove the axle from the reverse gear and, of course, the gear.
  6. Next, take out the differential and two shafts with gears. Unscrew the three bolts that secure the gear mechanism and remove it from the crankcase.
  7. Unscrew the rear lever bolt and remove the rod.
  8. If necessary, remove the bearings of the primary and secondary shafts with a separator.

Dismantling of the VAZ 2110 gearbox has been completed.

VAZ-2110 with automatic transmission

Undoubtedly, the “ten” is the most popular domestic car. The consumer has plenty to choose from: three body styles, two engine options and countless combinations of equipment, trim and paint. For complete happiness, the only thing missing is an automatic transmission . However, interesting proposals have already appeared here - both the manufacturer itself and specialists from outside are taking up the task of filling the gap.

The factory version of the “tens” with automatic transmission is at the finishing stage. VAZ did not develop its own unit The principle of its operation is quite simple: a regular V-belt drive, only here both pulleys are detachable. Their halves converge or diverge, changing the depth of the stream. The drive belt, accordingly, operates on different diameters. By varying them, you can smoothly change the gear ratio.

The installation of a foreign organ did not cause any particular difficulties. A special spacer was made between the clutch housing and the engine and the third support of the power unit, located on the body of the manual transmission, was moved. And, of course, the gear shift lever was replaced with a selector .

Compared to an automatic transmission, the choice of driving modes here is limited:

Few “ machine guns ” can boast of the effectiveness of the latter. In this mode, the variator engages a “low” gear (that is, it is in the maximum gear ratio position) and continues to hold it when the gas is released. To avoid wheel locking, shifting is made smooth, with a noticeable delay. Reliability is not a concern.

After all, the variator is designed to transmit torque up to 145 N.m, so it can easily handle 130 N.m of the most powerful sixteen-valve VAZ engine . In addition, the unit has long passed its baptism of fire - exactly the same one is installed on the Mini-Cooper. We can’t say for sure when sales will begin, but dealers are already predicting good demand for such a modification. How right they are - the future, hopefully not too far away, will show.

Another version of the “automatic” for the VAZ-2110 was offered by a private company – the more familiar “planetary”. A Toyota Corolla was taken as a donor. In addition to the legendary reliability, its “automatic” perfectly matched the characteristics of the VAZ sixteen-valve engine. However, the new unit turned out to be too expensive. Having gone through the options, we settled on “used” ones with a mileage of up to 50 thousand km - fortunately, the remaining resource is more than enough. A partner was found in Japan - a supplier of used spare parts. But the main problem, as you guessed, is not in the technology, but in the papers...

As you know, the Rules do not allow changes to the design of a certified vehicle. VAZ's CVT "ten" does not face sanctions. Before serial production begins, the modification will be properly tested, an index will be assigned, and a certificate will be issued. With the Lada, which was modernized by a small company, everything is not so simple: legalization measures cannot be pulled off.

But no one will buy an “illegitimate” car - you won’t be able to register it, and you won’t pass inspection. In search of a way out, they turned to NAMI. After reviewing the drawings and “live” cars, they agreed to issue a certificate of fitness, but only... to the individual owner! Now each buyer goes to Avtomotornaya Street, where (at the expense of the seller) he “straightens out the document.” Troublesome, but absolutely legal! Other rights are not infringed - the selling company retains the factory warranty, including for the “automatic”.

The unit from the Corolla is “brainless”, with hydraulic control. This greatly simplified the task - there was no need to interfere with the car’s electronics. All feedback is the selector cable and the starter interlock relay. The crankcases were joined through a pair of adapter plates: one was screwed to the engine, the other to the “ machine gun ”. In addition, it was necessary to move the box support on the left side member and re-cut the splines on the inner CV joints. The selector lever was secured to a standard body support, even retaining the original traction. If the future owner suddenly decides to return to mechanics, the alteration will cost one and a half thousand rubles! That’s how much a missing bracket and a couple of “grenades” cost (if you do everything yourself and, of course, if you have an ordinary box). However, this is unlikely to occur to anyone. After all, the automated “ten” is, at least a little bit, already a “Toyota”. The car starts easily at idle and picks up speed confidently. There is no need to “move the poker” in traffic jams. The advantage appeals to the most inveterate racers - even the famous circuit rider Mikhail Ukhov preferred an “ automatic ” during city trips. The VAZ's cross-country ability, including geometric, was not affected.

There is always a way out

For these reasons, the most suitable option for these engines is a V-belt tensioner. A stacked “pushing” element made of steel allows significant torque to be transmitted between the rollers. The main unit of the V-belt tensioner is two sliding rollers, between which a special belt is tensioned. By moving the halves of the main pulley apart and reducing its working profile, the landing roller while simultaneously compressing it, you can get an enhanced transmission. When the two rollers are in the central position, this is the main gear, and accordingly increasing the profile of the main pulley with lowering the driven one gives an overdrive.

The structure of the design makes it possible, while accelerating, to constantly maintain the motor in operating mode corresponding to the highest power indicator, and the increase in speed occurs through slow, smooth switching of the transmission indicator.

With various manual transmissions, the engine must operate more often in the minimum favorable speed modes; for this reason, a vehicle with a CVT can pick up speed in a shorter time than with a manual transmission.

To prevent wheel engagement on a slippery roadway from causing the car to skid, it is necessary to use a low gear in the manual transmission. In mechanics, everyone knows this process, but in automation it has completely different principles. In the “Drive” mode, the variator perceives a decrease in engine speed, and thus the box automatically switches to a lower gear, so the car is almost unable to brake with the engine, but when switching to another mode, changes appear. Lower rpm equals better braking. In order to switch the joystick from one mode to another when moving, engine braking will start quite slowly and a significant delay will be felt.

Automatic transmission for VAZ 2109

The first model that served as a springboard for the installation of automatic transmission among VAZ cars was 2115. Now automatic transmission is occasionally found on cars 2109, 2110, 2113, 2114, 2115 and 99. VAZ models released in the 00s, Lada Kalina and Lada Granta, became the first domestic passenger cars with factory equipment including an automatic transmission.

Option #1

At the moment, anyone who wants to install an automatic transmission on a “nine”, 2113 or 2114 has two options. The first is to install a contract automatic transmission from Toyota Corona. The undoubted advantages of such modernization:

Common gearbox problems

The problem concerns the first gear speed. It turns on very hard, there is an extraneous sound when changing gears, the speed drops while driving.

The reasons may be the following:

  • The synchronizer may have failed.
  • The retainer spring has burst or has a defect.
  • Speeds may change independently due to the weakening of the lever.
  • The problem is in the stem or fork. They need to be replaced.

The next problem concerns second gear. Most often, car enthusiasts are faced with the fact that the second speed jumps out or difficulties arise when turning it on.

The following reasons may lie behind this:

  • The gear teeth are worn out, as a result of which they do not cling well to the gear shift clutch. In this case, it is necessary to repair the VAZ 2110 gearbox. In the future, this may cause the transmission to crash.
  • If the transmission slips out exclusively when driving over bumps, then we can say with confidence that the reason for this is a problem with the clutch.

The occurrence of extraneous noise in the gearbox may be due to bearings that have failed. In order to find out, you need to check the play of the roller bearings that are installed in the clutch housing, and the rolling bearings located on the primary and secondary shafts.

You need to check the forks and gear rods very carefully. These parts tend to deteriorate very quickly. If there are any obvious signs of wear on these mechanisms, then they need to be replaced immediately with new ones. You can buy these parts at auto stores.

If a car enthusiast has a little experience in repairing a VAZ 2110 gearbox, then he can safely carry out repair work on the gearbox on his own. From this article it is clear that this is not so difficult to do. Even a car owner, without sufficient experience and skills, can cope with this problem.

Problems with the traffic police and insurance: truth or fiction

Installing an automatic transmission on a Granta instead of a manual transmission is a design change that affects safety. Such conversion is registered with the traffic police. True, the process itself is more reminiscent of the movie “Santa Barbara”:

In a word, it’s not a conversion from a manual transmission to an automatic transmission on the Lada Grant, but a multi-episode soap opera.

In fact, 9 out of 10 motorists refuse to play these games: they drive until the next re-registration. And then maybe it will blow by.

Secret conversions on the Lada Grant - installing an automatic transmission, for example - no, no, they will play a cruel joke on the owner. A harmless minor accident with the occurrence of an insured event will reveal design changes in the car. In the future, they will become a powerful argument for refusing to pay insurance.

Perhaps it will happen here too: violate, violate!
