Replacing a new steering wheel on a VAZ 2108, VAZ 2109, VAZ 2112

How to remove the steering wheel from a car

The steering wheel on a VAZ 2109-2108 car has to be removed, much less changed, quite rarely. This occurs either due to wear of the splines inside, which is extremely rare, or due to a breakdown of the steering wheel itself, which is a little more common. The procedure for replacing the steering wheel is simple to perform and for this you will need:

  • 24mm head
  • knob
  • extension
  • screwdriver

It’s worth mentioning right away that the design of the steering wheel may differ slightly depending on the car model, year of manufacture or other reasons. On some steering wheels, the upper horn-button cover can be removed with bare hands, while on others you will have to unscrew several bolts from below, which was the case in my case, since the steering wheel was not factory:

And after all the bolts are unscrewed (in my case there were 4 of them), you can remove the button, of course, after first disconnecting the horn power wires:

After this, turn the VAZ 2109-2108 steering wheel all the way to the left, and using a 24mm socket and a wrench, unscrew the fastening nut:

Please note that you should not unscrew the nut completely - leave it on the shaft. Now with both hands from the inside we try to pull the steering wheel towards ourselves, gradually loosening it from side to side. You can also alternately hit it from below with your hands until it jumps off the slots.

Often, many people spend a lot of time to perform this procedure, since everything “sticks” in this place is not weak. But sooner or later the steering wheel will come off, and that’s why you shouldn’t unscrew the nut completely, otherwise you might get a steering wheel in the forehead
