Correct operation of a car engine is possible only under conditions of constant lubrication of its internal components and parts. In this article we will look at how the Niva Chevrolet oil is changed and in what cases the lubricant must be changed.
[Hide]
Frequency according to regulations
According to the regulations, the oil should be changed every 10,000 kilometers. If the car is not used very often and has low mileage, then the oil still needs to be changed at least once a year. In the following cases, an additional oil change may also be necessary:
- The engine starts very poorly at the start;
- The engine is running loudly and/or there is unusual noise;
- During movement, vibrations begin to occur;
- The lubricant level has dropped sharply;
- Upon inspection, traces of dirt and/or sand were found in the oil;
- The main fuel contains a large amount of sulfur.
In accordance with the official maintenance and operation manual, the frequency of changing synthetic or semi-synthetic fluid in the Chevrolet Niva engine is one year or 10 thousand kilometers. After this, this substance loses its properties and cannot properly lubricate the rubbing components of the engine.
What signs can be used to determine the need to replace synthetics or semi-synthetics in the Niva internal combustion engine:
- there were difficulties starting the engine;
- the power unit began to operate more noisily, and sounds uncharacteristic of its operation appeared;
- the engine began to vibrate and oscillate;
- the lubricant level has dropped and is now below normal;
- traces of deposits and dirt have appeared in the oil, which can be seen on the dipstick.
The service life of the lubricant is determined by several factors:
- Terms of use of the car. If the vehicle is operated in a large, dusty city, this will reduce the service life of the lubricant.
- The quality of the fuel filled into the car. If the fuel contains more sulfur than necessary or the gasoline does not meet the standards, the performance properties of the consumable material are reduced.
- The quality of lubrication is also affected by year-round operation of the machine. This leads to a decrease in the characteristics of the liquid due to temperature changes, air humidity and other nuances.
You can learn in detail how to properly change the lubricant in a Chevrolet Niva engine from a video filmed by the user Village Citizen.
How to replace it yourself?
Changing the oil in a Niva Chevy engine with your own hands is not so difficult. You will need a garage with a pit or overpass, as well as detailed instructions. Below we will look step by step how to replace the lubricant in the engine.
Tools and materials
Having purchased the required volume of oil for filling with a filter, you need to additionally prepare the tool:
- clean rags;
- a cut-off bottle or old bucket (any container into which used lubricant can be drained);
- iron brush;
- a device for dismantling the cleaning device; if it is missing, you can remove the filter using improvised means;
- screwdriver;
- hexagon for unscrewing the drain plug;
- watering can or funnel.
The Car Lover channel has provided a video showing the procedure for changing lubricant and cleaners in a Niva Chevrolet car.
Algorithm of actions
How to change the lubricant yourself:
- The replacement procedure is carried out on a warm engine, this will allow the heated oil to drain as much as possible from the system. The machine is driven into a garage with a pit for work.
- Open the hood of the Chevrolet Niva. Locate the filler neck; it is located on the cylinder head. Unscrew the plug.
- Under the bottom of the car you will see the power unit crankcase protection; it must be removed. To dismantle, unscrew all the bolts that secure it. Make sure there is no oil in it. Under the protection you will see a drain cover. If there is dirt on it, clean the plug with a brush or rags. Place a cut bottle or other type of container under the drain hole.
- Using a wrench, unscrew the plug. At first, the liquid will flow out of the hole with a slight pressure, but after the lid is finally opened, oil may splash out, so we recommend using gloves. Wait until the used lubricant has completely left the Chevrolet Niva engine. When the draining is complete, screw the plug into place, but before doing so, assess the condition of the seal. If it is worn out or cracked, it is recommended to replace it.
- Assess the condition of the drained liquid. If you find traces of deposits and dirt, as well as wear products (metal dust, pieces of rubber), it is recommended to flush the lubrication system. It is also necessary to flush when switching from one brand of motor fluid to another.
- If cleaning the engine is necessary, you will also need four liters of flushing oil. Lubricant is poured into the engine and the filler plug is tightened. Start the engine and drive the car for several kilometers. Drain the flushing oil and assess its condition. It should be cleaner. If there are no wear products left, then you can proceed to the next stage. If there are deposits in the flushing oil, the cleaning procedure should be repeated.
- Locate the installation location of the cleaning device. If you have a puller, then remove the filter using the tool. If you don't have a key, try unscrewing the device by hand. If nothing comes out, take a screwdriver and use it to pierce the filter housing as close to the bottom as possible. When punching, it is important not to damage the thread on which the cleaner is installed. Once the screwdriver is past the filter housing, use it as a lever. You can use a bicycle chain by wrapping it around the cleaning device and turning it counterclockwise.
- About one hundred grams of lubricant should be poured into the new filter. It is recommended to lubricate the rubber located in the thread area with a drop of oil. This will prevent it from sticking and problems during further dismantling of the device. Install the filter into its seat by screwing it clockwise. Do not over-tighten the device.
- Install the watering can into the engine filler neck. You must pour liquid into the power unit carefully so as not to spill. The volume of lubricant in the internal combustion engine is monitored using a meter. Ideally, the fluid level should be between the MIN and MAX marks. After filling, the neck plug is tightened.
- Start the car engine and let it idle. The engine should warm up.
- After starting, the engine oil pressure warning light may light up on the dashboard in the cabin. It should turn off automatically after a few seconds.
- Make sure there is no lubricant leakage.
- Let the engine cool, then check the volume of the substance in the power unit again. If necessary, add fluid to the internal combustion engine.
Selecting oil and filter
We carry out the replacement by placing the car on an overpass or inspection ditch, with the engine not running, preferably immediately after the trip, until the oil has cooled down.
Unscrew the oil filler cap.
From the bottom of the car, we clean the oil pan from dirt around the drain plug.
Use a 17mm socket with an extension to loosen the drain plug.
We place a wide container for used oil with a volume of at least 4 liters under the hole...
...and, unscrewing the plug manually, drain the oil.
Attention! Be careful - the oil is hot.
Drain the oil for at least 10 minutes.
After wiping the plug, screw it on and tighten it. We remove oil leaks from the engine oil pan.
Place a container under the oil filter. Unscrew (counterclockwise) the oil filter. If this cannot be done manually...
... loosen the filter with a puller (for clarity, we show the operation on the removed filter).
If there is no puller, we pierce the filter housing with a screwdriver (closer to the bottom, so as not to damage the engine fitting) and unscrew the filter, using the screwdriver as a lever.
Remove the oil filter.
We clean the filter seat on the cylinder block from dirt and oil drips.
Apply engine oil to the filter O-ring.
We wrap the oil filter by hand until the sealing ring comes into contact with the cylinder block.
Then turn the filter another 3/4 turn to seal the connection.
Pour 3.75 liters of oil into the engine through the oil filler neck.
Screw the neck cap clockwise.
We start the engine for 1–2 minutes. We make sure that the indicator of insufficient (emergency) oil pressure in the engine in the instrument cluster has gone out and there are no leaks from under the plug and filter. If necessary, tighten the oil filter and drain plug.
We stop the engine, after a few minutes (so that the oil flows into the oil pan), check the oil level and bring it to normal.
For the Chevrolet Niva, any synthetic or semi-synthetic oils are suitable, which differ slightly from each other in their technical characteristics.
Previously, mineral oils could also be found on sale, but they did not have very good properties (foamed, burned out quickly, and so on), so they gradually fell out of use.
You need to choose oil for the Chevrolet Niva depending on the climate zone:
- If you live in a region where the temperature ranges from -35 to 25 degrees, then you should buy 0W-30 class oil.
- For more southern regions, 5W-30 class oil is suitable.
- For hot regions, a 10W-40 or 20W-40 grade is a good choice.
Also note that each manufacturer adds special additives to the oil, which are necessary to give it additional properties. For example, for cars with high mileage, it is recommended to buy oils with additives that remove carbon deposits, and in the case of new cars, it is advisable to buy liquid with additives that protect engine parts from corrosion.
If you decide to make the replacement yourself, it will be useful to find out which engine oil is best to pour into the engine in summer or winter. The substance recommended by the manufacturer for filling into Chevrolet Niva diesel engines with hydraulic compensators must comply with class 5W30 of the SL/CF standard. This lubricant is poured into car engines from the factory.
The main thing is that the product has passed Euro 4 safety class tests. To choose the best oil, we recommend that you read reviews from other Niva car owners. In fact, lubricants corresponding to API, SJ, SH, SG classes can be poured into power units. As for the viscosity standard, it is selected taking into account the temperature range of use of the machine. The best option for Niva Chevrolet is considered to be Mobile Super 3000 lubricant.
The following products can be used:
- Lukoil 10W40;
- Shell Helix with viscosity grade 5W30 or 10W40;
- Petro Canada;
- Castrol;
- Gazpromneft, etc.
The service life of the oil filter corresponds to the service life of the lubricant, so if you decide to change the fluid, you must also change the cleaner. In the production of cars, Salut filter devices with article number 2108-1012005 are used, so many experts recommend choosing this particular product. It is possible to use MANN W920/21 purifiers with a height of 7 cm or SCT SM 102 devices. All of the listed filter options are equally effective.
Lubricant selection
This issue must be approached extremely responsibly. Currently, there are a lot of high-quality lubricants for power units on store shelves. But there are also many fakes. They are the ones to be feared. Motor oil made without technology can kill a completely “living” engine in just a few thousand kilometers. Both ordinary drivers and experts in the industry speak about this.
First of all, you need to follow the manufacturer's recommendations. The manufacturer has specified all necessary tolerances. New Niva models comply with Euro-4 standards. The power unit, equipped with hydraulic compensators, needs to be filled with 5W30 synthetic motor oil of at least API, SJ class. In addition, it is necessary to take into account the temperature range in which the vehicle is operated. For northern regions, more fluid oils are used, and for southern regions, on the contrary, more viscous ones. In general, the manufacturer recommends lubricants such as Lukoil 3000, Shell Helix, Petro Canada and others. Many drivers speak positively about brands such as Lukoil and Shell, which they recommend putting into their engines.
Which consumables should I choose?
The engine is the heart of the car. In order for all its elements to work smoothly and properly, the motor must always be in good condition.
Engine oil helps maintain the performance of all engine elements and is individually selected by the manufacturer for each type of power unit and vehicle in particular.
Changing the oil on a Chevrolet Niva is a rather important undertaking that requires a certain set of knowledge, which can be gleaned from the car’s operating manual or through consultation with service station specialists.
; You can also fill it with Lukoil, Shell, Castrol, Petro Canada or any other oil whose specification corresponds to the climate where the car will be used (
You also need to take into account that it is dangerous to fill your car with oil that has not passed the safety test (when choosing, give your preference to oil that has a safety class of Euro 4 or higher).
Based on technical regulations, changing the oil and filter on a Chevrolet Niva should be carried out once every 15,000 km. However, given the difficult operating conditions of our cars and the often mediocre quality of fuels and lubricants, experts recommend changing the oil at least twice as often. This will extend the life of the engine and avoid severe wear of the crank mechanism and parts of the cylinder-piston group. We will understand the intricacies of changing the oil on a Chevrolet Niva together.
How to choose the right oil? The manufacturer recommends looking at the operating instructions. The manufacturer recommends using domestic motor oil, LLK-International LLC, Angarsk Petrochemical Company OJSC.
Auto mechanics recommend using oil from foreign manufacturers:
- SHELL;
- Castrol;
- Exxon Mobil Corporation;
- Ravenol;
- SK Lubricants.

Work progress
First you need to warm up the engine, and then place the car on a pit or overpass. You can also do this immediately after the trip, while the oil is still hot.
Changing the oil in a Chevrolet Niva begins with unscrewing the filler neck.
Next, you need to clean the dirt from the oil pan by cleaning the drain plug.
Using a wrench, an extension and a 17 socket, you need to loosen the drain plug.
Next, a pre-prepared container for draining is placed under the plug.
If you do not want to remove the crankcase protection, you should be aware that when draining, the likelihood of oil splashing increases.
Then the plug must be completely unscrewed and the oil drained.
The work must be performed with extreme caution due to the high temperature of the oil.
All you have to do is wait until it drains completely - this takes 10-15 minutes. When everything is done, you need to thoroughly wipe the removed elements, then screw in the plug and tighten it.
Next, the process of changing the oil in the Chevrolet Niva engine involves installing a new oil filter.
To do this, place a drain container under the oil filter and unscrew it counterclockwise. If it is too tight, you need to use a puller. At the same time, the owners note the very good location of the filter itself - it is located in the direction of travel of the car.
If you don’t have a puller, you can arm yourself with a screwdriver or an awl, pierce the filter and unscrew it using a lever.
You need to pierce the filter near its bottom so as not to hit the fitting.
When the filter is removed, its seat should be cleaned of smudges and dust.
Before installation, the filter O-ring must be lubricated with new oil, and oil must be poured into the filter itself, filling it approximately 60%.
Install and tighten the filter by hand until the O-ring touches the cylinder block. Afterwards you need to tighten it another ¾ turn.
When this is done, all that remains is to pour new oil into the engine and tighten the filler cap. The standard volume of oil to be filled is 3.75 liters. However, in reality it will be slightly less (about 3.5-3.7 liters), since there is still some waste left in the engine.
After a quarter of an hour, you need to check the oil level with a dipstick. If it is normal, you need to start the engine. In this case, the indicator on the dashboard should go out after a few seconds.
With the power unit running, you need to once again inspect the system for leaks.
Finally, you need to turn off the engine, tighten the filter and drain plug, and then check the oil level again. If there are deviations downwards, top up to the required level.
This completes the independent oil change in the Chevrolet Niva.

What oil is better to fill in a Niva Chevrolet engine?
Accordingly, when choosing a replacement engine oil, it is necessary to give preference to products with quality standards declared by the automaker, while the viscosity coefficient may vary depending on the prevailing operating conditions of the vehicle and the temperature range in which it is used.
API acceptable criteria for filling into internal combustion engines are the oil markings SG, SH and SJ. As for the priority brand of products, car owners most often use oil from Lukoil, Shell and Mobile for filling. However, the consumer can give preference to any of the world’s well-established suppliers of lubricants and combustible materials, choosing from their assortment a product with quality criteria that meets the standards described above.
When purchasing oil, it is important to take a responsible approach to choosing a point of sale; certified auto stores are preferred, as they protect the consumer as much as possible from purchasing counterfeit products.
Preparing for replacement
In addition to purchasing oil in sufficient quantities, before you begin to change it yourself, it is important to prepare all the materials and tools necessary for this procedure. In parallel with replacing the lubricant in the internal combustion engine, according to the regulations, a change of the filter element is required. This consumable part must be purchased exclusively of the original type to ensure reliable filtration during engine operation. Depending on the modification of the internal combustion engine, different oil filters will be required, therefore this element must be selected exclusively in accordance with the information in the technical data sheet, according to the original Niva Chevrolet consumables catalog. It is advisable to make such a purchase at official points of sale.
Additionally, to perform the work you will need the following tools:
- a set of car keys;
- special wrench for unscrewing the oil filter;
- extension for keys;
- container for waste liquid;
- clean rags.
You will have to work on a warm engine, so prepare protective clothing.
Engine oil change interval
The manufacturer fills the 1.7-liter Chevrolet Niva engine with traditional motor oil with a viscosity grade of 5W-30 (API SL/CF TU 0253-069-48120848-2012) or 5W-40. Niva owners fill in different oils with a viscosity of 5W-30. For example, some of the popular ones:
- PC SUPREME 10W40;
- WINDIGO 5W40;
- Lukoil 10W40;
- Shell Helix 10W40 or 5W30;
- Mobil Super 3000 5w-40;
Manufacturer recommended scheduled maintenance every 15,000 km.
When purchasing, be aware that 3.7 liters of oil will immediately be poured into the engine. Therefore, you will have to buy at least 4 liters. Also, do not forget about daily monitoring of the level and, if necessary, adding fluid.
Suitable cleaning filter MANN W914/2 VAZ.
The oil is changed when the engine is warmed up to operating temperature. To avoid burns, you can let it cool slightly.
Then you need to place a container under the engine crankcase drain hole and carefully unscrew the plug. The drain plug is located somewhat inconveniently, which is why oil can spread over the beam. The oil will drain better if you unscrew the engine filler cap. When the oil has drained, you should screw the plug back, having first cleared it of dirt and chips (the plug is magnetic).
The oil filter is unscrewed by hand, otherwise you should resort to one of the types of oil filter pullers. When removing the filter, a little oil will also run out. Before installing a new oil filter, it is worth lubricating its O-ring with fresh oil and wiping the seat.
After this, you can fill in new oil. This video instruction will show you how to change the Chevrolet Niva oil.
The operation of a Chevrolet Niva SUV, by definition, takes place in difficult conditions. Therefore, the importance of timely maintenance (TO), incl. Chevrolet Niva oil changes increases significantly. A competent SUV owner strives to complete the operation not only in a timely manner, but also efficiently, using oil appropriate for the type of engine.

Access to the drain plug of the Niva Chevrolet oil pan is possible even with the crankcase protection and mudguard installed, however, in this case, some of the oil will inevitably spill out of the hole for the plug and when removing the oil filter from the oil line and contaminate the shield.
Unscrew the drain plug of the Niva Chevrolet, first placing a container for the drained oil. Drain the used oil and turn the plug back
Unscrew the oil filter by hand or a puller, then fill the inner cavity of the new oil filter with new engine oil to about a third of the volume.
Lubricate the oil filter gasket with clean engine oil and screw the filter into place by hand without using tools. Fill in new Niva Chevrolet engine oil. Close the oil filler cap.
Stop the engine, check the oil level, add Chevy Niva engine oil if necessary, tighten the plug and filter.

Now let’s figure out how many liters of liquid should be poured. In Chevrolet Niva cars with an engine capacity of 1.7 and 1.8 liters, about 3.5-3.75 liters of lubricant must be poured. To complete the task you will have to purchase a four-liter package.
The Garazhnik channel published a video that shows step by step the process of changing consumables in domestic Chevrolet Nivas.
A popular option among domestic owners.
- For regions with a temperature range from -35 to 25 degrees, oils with a viscosity of SAE 0W-30 are usually chosen.
- In regions with a temperate climate, it is recommended to use all-season oils with a viscosity of 5W-30, 5W-40, and for the southern regions, more viscous oils with indexes 15W-40, 20W-40 are used.
The lubricant manufacturer adds a lot of additives to the oil that improve the characteristics of the oil, and each has its own. Therefore, choosing a brand is a purely personal matter for everyone.
The frequency of changing the oil in the internal combustion engine of an SUV is the first question that the owner of a Niva must decide on. The difficulty of the solution lies in the fact that, on the one hand, extreme operating conditions and engine loads imply frequent changes of working fluids, on the other hand, the Niva is an SUV, which by default must be ready for difficult conditions.
An unambiguous answer to the question that interests owners, how often an oil change is needed in a Niva Chevrolet engine, is given by the automaker’s regulations, according to which the interval between procedures should not exceed one year, even if the car is used in a gentle mode, or after every fifteen thousand kilometers the car has traveled.
Additionally, the following factors of the negative category may influence the interval between oil changes on the Chevrolet Niva towards reduction:
- Filling a car with low-quality fuel with an excessive sulfur content or other deviations of the filling fluid from the established standards.
- Predominant operation of the machine in difficult conditions, which experts include increased loads on the engine during low-speed driving and increased air pollution, which is most often observed in large cities.
- Intensive use of transport all year round, which is accompanied by sudden changes in temperature conditions, increased air humidity in the autumn and spring, which contribute to a faster loss of the oil’s declared qualities.
An indicator of the need for an unscheduled oil change may be deteriorated machine performance or extraneous noise from the engine. You can also determine the need to change the engine oil by visually inspecting the lubricant in the system during a scheduled or extraordinary check of its level.
Indicators for replacing the lubricant in this case may include impurities in the lubricant, a change in its color to a black tint, or a burning smell. Having made sure that the oil needs to be changed, the Niva owner, before starting work, needs to buy the lubricant itself. And to do this, it’s worth figuring out which motor oil is best suited for the unit and how much it will be needed for a complete replacement.
To determine how much oil you need to buy to completely replace it in a Chevrolet Niva engine, it is important to know the engine size of the vehicle you are using. The Chevrolet Niva model can be modified with two variations of power units: the first is a basic 1.7 petrol engine with a power rating of eighty horsepower, the other is an alternative option installed under an Opel license, with a 1.8 rating and one hundred and twenty-five horsepower units. .
The amount of oil in the Chevrolet Niva 1.7 and 1.8 engines is 3.75 and 4.75 liters, respectively. In both cases, it would be prudent to buy a canister of oil with a capacity of five liters: the remainder can be used as a strategic reserve in case of need for topping up during operation of the SUV.

Level control
The procedure for monitoring fluid volume should be carried out on a cold engine:
- Open the hood of the car and find the inspection hole where the meter is installed.
- Remove it from its seat and wipe it with a rag.
- Reinstall the dipstick into the neck of the inspection hole and pull it out. If the lubricant level in the machine’s engine is normal, traces of oil will be located midway between the MIN and MAX marks on the meter. At a lower volume, it is recommended to check the tightness of the lubrication system. A critically low engine oil level may indicate a serious leak.
Instructions
- We warm up the engine to 45-50 degrees. Warm oil has better fluidity and will drain better from the engine during a complete replacement. Our task is to remove as much as possible the old dirty and used fluid that no longer has useful properties from the engine and fill it with new one. If a lot of old dirty oil remains in the crankcase, it will be swept away with the new one and will worsen its beneficial properties. Warm up the engine for 5-7 minutes before starting, this will be sufficient.
- For easy access to the drain plug (and in some models the oil filter is also attached from the bottom) and the bottom of the car as a whole, you need to jack it up or drive into an inspection hole (the best option). Also, some models may have engine crankcase “protection” installed.
- We open air access to the crankcase by unscrewing the filler cap and dipstick.
- Place a large container (equal to the amount of oil being poured).
- Unscrew the drain plug with a wrench. Sometimes the drain plug is made like a regular “bolt” under an open-end wrench, and sometimes it can be unscrewed using a four- or hexagon. Don't forget to wear protective gloves, the oil will most likely wake you up warm, but you need to be careful.
- We wait about 10-15 minutes until the waste flows into a basin or cut-off plastic canister.
- Optional but very effective! Flushing the engine with a special liquid is not included in the maintenance regulations and is not mandatory - but. By getting a little confused, you will be much better at flushing out the old, black oil from the engine. In this case, wash with the old oil filter for 5-10 minutes. You will be surprised at the black oil that comes out with this liquid. This liquid is very easy to use. A detailed description should appear on the flushing fluid label.
- Changing the sedum filter. In some models, it is not the filter itself or the filter element (usually yellow) that is changed. Impregnating the filter with new oil before installation is a mandatory procedure. Lack of oil in the new filter before starting the engine can cause oil starvation, which in turn can cause filter deformation. Overall this is not a good thing. Also remember to lubricate the rubber O-ring before installation.
- Fill in new oil. Having made sure that the drain plug is screwed in and a new oil filter is installed, we can begin to fill in new oil using the dipstick as a guide. The level should be between the minimum and maximum marks. Also, you need to remember that after the first start of the engine, some oil will leave and the level will drop.
- In the future, when the engine is running, the oil level will probably change; be careful during the first few days of operation. Recheck the oil level using the dipstick after the first start.
Choosing an oil filter
High-quality cleaning of engine oil will allow you to filter out as completely as possible solid particles that enter the liquid as wear products of rubbing surfaces. Therefore, you should not save when buying a filter element.
For the 1.7 engine, a filter element is produced - MANN-HUMMEL with index W 914/2. Be careful, the filter W 920/21, which is similar in mounting, is intended for similar engines, but with a volume of 1.6 liters.
The filter for the 1.8 liter engine will not be equal in size to the previous one. This is due to the lower rate of oil pumping. At the same time, due to the rarity of the engine, purchases of “consumables” are carried out individually according to the catalog or VIN number of the car.
