Choosing what kind of oil to fill in a Chevrolet Lacetti: how much oil is in the engine?

The Chevrolet Lacetti is a compact C-class car, produced from 2002 to 2014. Despite the official cessation of production, the car is still assembled in China and Uzbekistan for local markets. The model was designed by the South Korean branch of GM-Daewoo together with the Italian studio Pininfarina, which helped in creating the design concept of the 4-door sedan. At the same time, the design of the five-door hatchback was created in the Giugiaro studio. In addition, the five-door Lacetti station wagon was still available. Without any doubt, it was the most global GM model of its time: the Lacetti was produced in Korea, Ukraine, Russia, Colombia, India, Thailand, Venezuela, etc. For some time in Russia the car was sold under the name Daewoo Gentra.

Criteria for selecting Chevrolet Lacetti oil

All oils are selected based on compliance with SAE, ACEA, API and manufacturer approvals.

  • GM Dexos-2 approval.
  • ACEA A3/B3-B4.
  • API SM and higher.
  • Viscosity is suitable 0w30, 0w40, 5w30, 5w40, but most often drivers fill in 5W-30.

Information on viscosity for a specific engine can be found in the motor oil interchangeability catalog: https://www.northsealubricants.com/en/oil-advisor

The catalog can be trusted, the data is taken from car manufacturers. In this case, you can choose not only oil for the engine, but also for the gearbox, power steering, brake system, and cooling system. That is, all liquids.

Standards

  • SAE is one of the parameters developed in the USA. It classifies modern and most popular oils. In addition, for the Chevrolet Lacetti model, SAE oil with a temperature viscosity of 5W30 or 5W40 is more suitable.
  • API is another standard also regulated in the US. This standard includes two categories of oil - S (for gasoline internal combustion engines) and C (for diesel engines). In addition to these designations, for Chevrolet Lacetti you can use a product with a marking of at least SM.
  • ACEA is a European standard, somewhat similar to the American API. This standard regulates European environmental standards and engine features, as well as the properties of oils. For example, for the European version of Lacetti, oil marked ACEA A3/B3 or A3/B4 is suitable. The product is certified for all-season use and is suitable for powerful and injection engines.

Oil filter selection

As you know, the oil must be changed together with the oil filter. So, in this case, the ideal option would be the Korean Sewon filter with the original marking 96879797, approved by GM. As of 2022, the price of such a filter is 200 rubles.

Let's consider a few more options:

  • Mann 712/22 is a German-made filter, ideal for Chevrolet Lacetti. It costs 180 rubles, that is, 20 rubles cheaper than the original.
  • Bosch 0451 103 079 is another German filter produced in South Africa. Approximate price: 180 rubles.
  • Hengst h90w03
  • Fram PH 4722

Any specified filter has proven itself well in the Chevrolet Lacetti.

Choosing the right oil for Lacetti, as well as recommended standards If you are guided by the original SAE viscosity standard, as well as the GM marking, in this case it is recommended to buy oil with a minimum amount of additives. As for the choice of this or that oil, it is impossible to give a definite answer. It all depends on the operating conditions, including the temperature outside the car. For example, for regions with warm climates, a product with a viscosity of OW-30 is suitable. The following oils correspond to this parameter:

  1. Elf Excellium Full-Tech - this oil is ideal for Lacetti with high mileage and a worn out engine. This product contains a minimum set of additives that quickly and effectively flush systems, eliminating the appearance of carbon deposits.
  2. Aral SuperTronic G is one of the most expensive, but at the same time the highest quality oils with an extremely low ash level
  3. Hundert Hight Tech is a European bestseller; in Russia it is rare Castrol EDGE - an expensive oil with a long service life. Optimal characteristics make it an excellent choice for Chevrolet Lacetti

Now let’s name the oils with the highest viscosity level:

  • Liqui Moly Special LL
  • Motul Specific LL A/B 025
  • Teboil Diamond
  • Comma Syner-Z

First of all, you need to pay attention to the viscosity and temperature indicators, and then the brand of oil. Naturally, this takes into account the climatic conditions in which the machine is operated, as well as the plant’s recommendations.

Oil analysis by oil spot method

If it is not clear through the neck, then remove the dipstick and drop a drop of oil on a clean sheet of paper. Then you need to wait about 15 minutes for it to dry and conduct a small analysis of the shape of the dried oil stain.

The diameter of the drop should be no more than 3 centimeters, and the edges of the spot should be smooth . If the edges are sharp, then the oil contains water content.

If the oil is clean and without impurities , then the stain will be large and light, and within two days it can almost completely disappear. If the spot turns yellow or oxidizes, then most likely the engine is operating at elevated temperatures.

If the spot of motor oil in the very center of the drop is light or close to light , the more efficient the oil. Strong darkening, on the contrary, indicates the presence of metal impurities (metal shavings) in the oil. This oil needs to be changed urgently, as it will lead to wear on the rubbing surfaces of the engine.

If the area of the outer ring of the engine oil is very small, this indicates a loss of properties of the additives in the oil. Which are needed for detergent and dispersing properties.

To understand what kind of oil can be filled in and in what cases, let’s figure out what kind of oils there are.

How to choose oil and how much to fill it in

At the GM plant, the original GM 5W-30 Dexos 2 oil was poured into the Chevrolet Lacetti engine. The lubricant volume is 3.75 liters. But you can prefer an analogue oil, which is practically not inferior in quality to the original product. Thus, among the recognized brands with a good reputation are the companies Mobile, ZIC, Lukoil, Castrol, Shell, Rosneft, Kixx and others.

As for the oil volume, with self-service the required fluid volume is 3.75 liters - for 1.4 and 1.6 liter engines.

Oil parameters can be found in the operating instructions or on the label of the original product. This consumable is distinguished according to SAE viscosity standards, which for Chevrolet Lacetti should look like this - 5W-30 and 5W-40.

In addition, you need to pay attention to the API classification, which indicates the quality of the oil. This parameter is designated as the letters S (for gasoline engines) and C (for diesel engines). As for Lacetti, the universal API SM parameter is also suitable for this model.

There is another equally important standard, according to the European ACEA classification. So, in this case, oil with ACEA A3/B3, as well as A3/B4 standards is suitable for the Lacetti. We are talking about all-season motor oils that can be filled in in any weather. But the seasonality of oil depends not only on these parameters.

Should you check your oil regularly?

If the car is often driven on light off-road conditions and is subjected to high loads, in such cases the condition of the oil should be checked as often as possible. Loss of useful properties can occur at any time, and this can negatively affect the reliability of the power plant. Let's highlight several signs, if detected, it would be a good idea to check the condition of the engine oil.

  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Increased oil consumption
  • Unclear gear shifting
  • The engine does not develop maximum speed and does not operate at full power
  • Noises and vibrations

Description

The range of engines is represented by petrol units with a volume of 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 liters, which work with both mechanics and automatic transmission. The power of the power plants varies from 94 to 121 hp, but even in the configuration with the weakest of them, the driver can enjoy a spirited ride both around the city and on the highway. At the same time, fuel consumption, depending on driving style, ranges from 7.1-8.1 liters per 100 km. Oil consumption does not exceed 600 ml per 1000 km, but this figure will be discussed further separately for each engine. Lacetti modifications with all three types of engines were officially supplied to Russia.

Being a golf-class car, the Chevrolet Lacetti had pretty good equipment. Rich basic equipment, dynamics, high-quality interior design and a comfortable interior have become a kind of calling card for buyers. The model quickly won people's love, which was largely facilitated by a fairly affordable price level. But there is also a fly in the ointment - the owners’ biggest complaints are the very thin metal, unstable coating and stiff suspension.

Types of oils

Let's look at the most common types of motor oils, of which there are only three:

  • Synthetic is the best oil today. It has outstanding viscosity and resistance to high and low temperatures. This is the rarest and most liquid oil, absolutely not prone to hardening. It can be recommended in any weather. Synthetics are well suited for relatively new cars, including cars with low mileage. Synthetic oil is the best product for Chevrolet Lacetti.
  • Mineral oil is the cheapest oil, and this is its main advantage. In addition, this is the thickest oil, prone to freezing due to its excessive thickness. Recommended for cars with high mileage that often suffer from oil leaks. With mineral oil, leaks are practically eliminated - again, largely due to the thick consistency. But for the Chevrolet Lacetti, if there is a lack of money for pure synthetics, it is better to save on semi-synthetics.
  • Semi-synthetic is a mixture of synthetic and mineral oils. A worthy alternative to cheap synthetics. This oil has a wider spectrum of action and is designed for a long service life.

Replacement frequency

Every owner of a Chevrolet Lacetti should understand that the official oil change schedule is an average indicator that has nothing to do with real operating conditions. Under favorable climatic conditions, the beneficial properties of the oil are preserved as long as possible, and this has a positive effect on the service life of the engine and its components. Only in such cases can one proceed from the data on the frequency of oil changes specified in the instructions.

But if the car is regularly used in harsh climatic zones and is subjected to enormous loads, then the regulations will have to be reduced by two or three times. For example, if Chevrolet recommends changing the lubricant every 20 thousand kilometers, then in severe winter conditions the frequency of replacement reaches about 10-15 thousand kilometers, since the oil life is significantly lower than in regions with favorable weather.

If you delay replacement, there is a high risk of defects appearing in the engine. In the end, untimely oil changes can cause a major overhaul of the internal combustion engine.
