This is especially noticeable among owners of the Niva VAZ 21213 and its modifications. Let's leave the kangaroo guards, plastic body kits and other well-known bells and whistles alone for now. It’s better to talk about wheels, because a good half of the “Nivas” do not drive around on their standard ones with VLI-5 and VLI-10 tires, but on completely different ones.

The running-in shoulder is largely determined by the design of the front suspension (Fig. 1). Negative leverage provides more stable movement during acceleration and braking, especially on roads with different coefficients of adhesion under the wheels (the so-called “mixed”). The break-in shoulder can be accurately determined only from the assembly drawing of the car's front suspension. However, this is not required. It is enough to know its change, which can be calculated from the tire and wheel sizes.

The most important parameter in this case is “wheel offset” (usually denoted ET). The method for measuring it independently (for wheels with symmetrical flanges) is shown in Fig. 2. The lower the ET, the greater the shift of the wheel outward, and the running shoulder - in a positive direction. For the Niva it is already positive, so an increase is not at all desirable - the car’s handling suffers.

FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE

We decided to illustrate the theory with examples using an editorial test. The carrier of the wheels was the VAZ 21214 with a 1.7-liter engine and GM mono-injection. The car's mileage before the start of work was 4,650 km. The test used four variants of wheels (in automotive jargon - disks) with tires, the sizes of which are given in the table. 1. These combinations were chosen as the most common and, moreover, not requiring modification of the hub assemblies and suspension elements.

The measurement results (Table 2) confirmed our assumptions. A significant improvement in dynamics is one of the reasons for installing “small” wheels. The second, rather, is psychological - the speedometer readings in this version become very “optimistic”. The maximum speed in all variants was achieved in fourth gear. In the base version (VLI-10 tires and steel wheels), the engine speed at the maximum reached speed of 126.2 km/h was only 4800 rpm. In other cases they ranged from 5300 to 5400 rpm. Thus, in the factory configuration the engine does not reach maximum power speed. In addition, with a decrease in the diameter and weight of the wheels, braking efficiency increases, but most importantly, you feel the brake pedal well.

Many Russian drivers are very ambitious on the road, and here the installation of “small” wheels, among other things, does not require the cost of boosting the engine or interfering with the transmission. Let's add the psychological effect of a speedometer that noticeably overestimates the speed, so it will not be easy to convince them to return to the standard. So, on smaller diameter and lighter wheels, the car accelerates faster. And if the tires are also imported, road tires, with low rolling resistance and high grip properties - isn’t this a triumph of “home” tuning?

The use of wide, low-profile tires on wheels with a standard offset value (in our case, 205/55–70 instead of 175/80) hardly changes the running-in distance. But the “low” tire profile has a positive effect on handling and stability. Indeed, a car on 16-inch light-alloy wheels (ET 58) with low-profile tires (205/55) reacts faster to steering wheel turns and holds the road better. At the same time, you won’t be able to ride on broken asphalt very well on such tires. The ground clearance is lower, and the ability to withstand chips and potholes is worse. There is something else that should not be kept silent about. Wide, low-profile tires mounted on a narrow 5Jx16 rim do not perform optimally when cornering. A 6" or even a 61/2" wide rim would be preferable for them. But then you will have to reduce the offset. And it has a much more noticeable effect on the behavior of the car. From this point of view, the 14-inch wheel from GAZ 24 (ET 0) is the worst option. The running shoulder with a 205 mm wide tire is significantly larger compared to the basic version (which has a 58 mm offset). How does this affect the driver's experience?
