How to change the oil in UAZ Patriot transmission units - axles, transfer case and gearbox

UAZ Patriot is one of the most popular SUVs on Russian roads. It was promoted to a leadership position in sales not only by its more affordable price compared to foreign analogues, but also by its excellent cross-country ability, which is relevant for domestic operating conditions. The car also deserves attention due to its excellent maintainability, unpretentiousness and ease of maintenance, which allows consumers to carry out simple technical tasks at home.

How to change the oil in the axle and transfer case of a UAZ Patriot.

Transmission units of an SUV, to some extent even more than similar units of other vehicles, require regular and timely maintenance, since the vehicle is often operated in difficult and extreme conditions. In this article, we will look at how often it is necessary to fill oil into the axles of a UAZ Patriot, how to replace the transmission lubricant on your own, and which fluid is most effective for the axles and transfer case of an SUV.

When is replacement necessary?

The frequency of oil changes in each transmission unit is regulated by the manufacturer in the user manual. For cars that have just left the assembly line, the first change of transmission fluids should be performed no later than after five thousand kilometers traveled. Such a short interval is explained by the fact that after assembly, new structural parts are rubbed against each other during the running-in procedure, during which there is a possibility of the formation of small metal particles, the presence of which can negatively affect the operating life of the components and the machine.

Further changes of the emulsion in the gearbox, transfer case and axles are regulated by the manufacturer at intervals after every thirty thousand vehicle miles. It should be understood that the interval between procedures may vary depending on how high-quality the product is poured into the transmission, as well as on the operating conditions of the vehicle.

Which oil should you choose?

It's no secret that the declared characteristics of a car in terms of cross-country ability, controllability and reliability are guaranteed only if the car owner follows the manufacturer's recommendations for operation and maintenance of the vehicle. Filling with low-quality emulsion is the first and main factor that can affect the operational life of machine parts.

Accordingly, it is necessary to decide what kind of oil to pour into the Patriot’s axles, gearbox and transfer case, guided by the manufacturer’s recommendations stated in the instructions:

  1. To fill the transfer case housing, it is necessary to purchase a transmission product with a viscosity criterion according to SAE 75W90, corresponding to API class GL-3.
  2. To perform the task in the front and rear axles of the UAZ Patriot, it is recommended to use fluids that meet the operating requirements of API category GL-5, according to SAE, viscosity grade 75W
  3. The gearbox is filled with lubricant that meets the SAE 75W85 standard and the API GL-4 standard.

In practice, from an economic point of view, it is not practical to buy three different types of transmission fluid, especially since the products are sold in containers with a volume of one liter or more - there will be significant residues that can spoil while waiting for the next service. Car owners are advised to use identical fluids with a viscosity of 75W90 and an API class of GL-4 for all transmission components, which have proven themselves to be the most effective during operation in Patriot units.

As for the brand of lubricating fluid, it is also worth paying attention to the manufacturer’s tolerances, which recommends pouring products from ZIK and Hanval Incorporated with the specified viscosity and specification. However, the buyer can choose a product from any well-known manufacturer, taking into account the requirements for the technological properties of the product.

How much oil to pour into the axles and transfer case of the UAZ Patriot

First generation 3163, since 2005

UAZ Patriot is an updated version of the Simbir. After modernization, the car became more comfortable and easier to handle. In general, the car became more “civilian”, but still had disadvantages in comparison with foreign analogues. The SUV borrowed the body, Spicer-type axles and ZMZ engines from Simbir. Today, the top-end version of the Patriot is equipped with an upgraded ZMZ Pro with a capacity of 150 hp. s., aggregated with a six-speed automatic transmission from the BMW 3 Series. In addition, to increase reliability, the car is made from a large number of foreign components: a Takata-Petri AG steering wheel (Germany), a Sanden air conditioner (England), a Dymos gearbox and Dawnsco seats (Korea), a Delphi power steering (Italy), etc. .

Refueling volumes

Having decided on the type of product required, the consumer, in order to buy it in sufficient quantities, needs to know how much oil in the UAZ Patriot will be required for a complete replacement. According to the vehicle instructions, the transmission units will require the following amount of fluid:

  1. The vehicle's axles will require a total of 2.7 liters of lubricant - 1.4 and 1.3 liters for the front and rear axles, respectively.
  2. The oil volume in the transfer case, according to the manual, is 0.7 liters.
  3. The volume of emulsion in the gearbox is 2.5 liters.

Accordingly, if you buy individual fluid for each of the components, then you will need to buy a liter of lubricant for the transfer case, and three liters of lubricant for the gearbox and axles. When deciding to fill with identical fluid for all UAZ Patriot transmission units, you will need to purchase six liters of oil.

Procedure

The procedure for replacing lubricant in Patriot transmission units is not particularly complicated, however, it requires patience and attentiveness from the performer. To complete the work in full, you will need to drain the used fluid from each of the system components one by one, replacing it with new lubricant. For this purpose, it is first necessary to prepare new oil in a volume sufficient for replacement, a set of car keys, containers for used fluid, as well as work clothes.

The task of replacing fluid in transmission units is carried out from the bottom of the car. In service centers, special lifts are used to ensure unhindered access to drain openings; at home, it will be enough to drive the vehicle onto a pit or overpass.

Before performing the operation, it is important to drive an SUV for about ten kilometers so that the lubricant in the system warms up to operating temperature. Under the influence of temperatures, it will become liquid and merge from the aggregates faster and better. Further measures are carried out in accordance with the work schedule for each transmission unit.

Changing the oil in axles

The procedures for changing the oil in UAZ Patriot axles do not differ in execution technology, so let’s look at the procedure for implementing the tasks using the rear axle as an example. In practice, you can successfully perform a replacement by following simple instructions from the car manufacturer:

  1. Locate the drain and fill caps, which are located on the rear axle housing. First, you need to clean the surfaces adjacent to the openings with a metal brush from dirt to avoid it getting into the system.
  2. Next, unscrew the filler plug to relieve pressure, after which you can unscrew the cover of the drainage hole, having previously placed a waste container under it.

  3. While the oil is draining, the plugs must be thoroughly cleaned of metal shavings that may accumulate on the inside of the caps during operation of the machine. After the oil has drained, the oil drain plug is installed in place and clamped with the recommended force.
  4. Using a technical syringe, lubricant is poured into the oil filler opening until it begins to flow out of the hole. This procedure will require about 1.3 liters of oil, depending on the quality of the waste drain.

  5. Don't forget to tighten the filler cap.

The oil change in the front axle of a UAZ Patriot is carried out in a similar way, with the only difference being that the oil filler and drain plugs must be looked for on the front axle housing. The front axle housing will contain no more than 1.4 liters of lubricant. At this point, the procedure for replacing the lubricant in UAZ Patriot axles can be considered successfully completed. Then you can move on to changing the oil in the transfer case and gearbox.

Changing the lubricant in the transfer case

The methodology for changing the oil in the transfer case of a UAZ Patriot is practically no different from the procedure for changing transmission fluid in axles. To perform the procedure, you will need to find the drain and filler holes, clean the surfaces one by one from dirt accumulations and unscrew the filler plug. Then the waste is removed into the prepared container through the drain opening. Once the liquid has drained, you need to tighten the drain plug and fill the oil through the filling opening using a technical syringe to the limit, which will be a little more than two and a half liters in volume.

Along with changing the oil in the axles and transfer case, it is recommended to change the lubricant in the gearbox, the technology of which is the same as in previous situations. When pouring new oil into the gearbox, the level should be monitored using a special dipstick with which the car is equipped. After filling and running in the car, you will need to recheck the level in the gearbox; you may need to top up the oil to normal.

After replacing the lubricant in all transmission components, you need to start the car and drive it for several kilometers, after which you drive it onto the overpass again and check all the joints for fluid leaks, and if necessary, tighten the plugs more tightly.

Let's sum it up

UAZ Patriot transmission units are designed to operate in aggressive operating conditions, and therefore are characterized by increased endurance. Despite this, their operational period directly depends on the owner’s compliance with the regulations for their maintenance. Irregular oil changes or completely ignoring them can cause vehicle failure, reducing its handling, maneuverability and safety on the road.

It is not difficult to carry out routine maintenance of axles, transfer cases and gearboxes at home, but it is advisable to replace the transmission oil in all components, which, on the one hand, will allow you not to get confused about the timing of re-replacement, and on the other hand, will extend the life of the car. And, most importantly, do not skimp on the quality of the lubricant; the operational period of components, assemblies and the vehicle as a whole depends on this.

Oil in the transfer case, gearbox and axles of the UAZ Patriot

UAZ Patriot is a Russian all-wheel drive SUV, produced since 2005. It has an all-metal five-door body with a five-seater interior and is designed for use on roads of any complexity, including rural areas and small water obstacles. This model is a further development of the Simbir family (UAZ-31622), as it has a similar design and similar off-road potential. On the other hand, this arrangement worsens ride quality when driving around the city. In addition to the five-door station wagon, based on the five-door Patriot, a 4-door pickup and van, as well as a two-door van, are produced. The car has gone through several upgrades, and the largest update took place in 2017.
