Transmission oils are designed to lubricate parts of manual transmissions, transfer cases and drive axles. They create a strong lubricating film at the contact points of the parts of these units, which can withstand heavy loads.

Gear oils are defined and differentiated by classifications that are widely accepted today: SAE J306 for viscosity, such as 80W, 90, 75W-85 or 80W-90, and API, which contains a comprehensive assessment of gear oils for performance properties, such as GL-4 or GL-5 . In addition, along with the API specification, indicators according to the American military specification, denoted by the MIL index, may sometimes be used. For example MIL-L-2105A or MIL-L-2105B.

Features of the classification of transmission oils according to SAE and API

SAE viscosity grades with the letter W refer to seasonal oils for the cold season, for example 75W or 80W.

Accordingly, without W - to oils for warm summer time, for example 90 or 140.

However, since the resource of transmission oils is quite long, using seasonal oils in everyday use, changing them in units every six months, is very inconvenient and not economically profitable.

The API classification currently contains five categories - GL-1, GL-2, GL-3, GL-4 and GL-5, which show the applicability and quality level of gear oils. For example, in category GL-5 - oil contains extreme pressure, anti-wear and other additives, used for hypoid and other types of gears in gearboxes and drive axles of cars.

Transmission oils for UAZ Hunter and UAZ Patriot gearboxes

Several types of synchronized gearboxes can be installed on UAZ Hunter cars and all models based on it: a four-speed Russian-made, a five-speed ADS made in China or a five-speed DYMOS made in Korea. On the UAZ Patriot and all models based on it, only a Korean-made five-speed DYMOS gearbox is installed.

The plant recommends filling the four-speed gearbox with SAE 75W-90 gear oil according to API GL-3. The Chinese-made five-speed ADS gearbox and the Korean-made five-speed DYMOS gearbox are SAE 75W-85, API GL-4.

Transmission oils for mechanical transfer case UAZ Hunter and UAZ Patriot

When equipping a vehicle with a four-speed or five-speed ADS gearbox, the plant recommends filling the mechanical transfer case produced by UAZ OJSC with the same transmission oil as the box.

This is quite justified, since it is due to the fact that during operation, partial flow of oil from the gearbox to the transfer case is possible.

The oil level in the gearbox may drop by 8 mm. relative to the lower edge of the filler hole and will accordingly rise in the transfer case.

When the car is equipped with a Korean five-speed DYMOS gearbox, it is recommended to fill the mechanical transfer case with SAE 75W-90 gear oil according to API - GL-3.

Although there is no particular point in this, since oil from the DYMOS box also tends to flow into the transfer case, so it is more rational to fill both units with the same oil to prevent possible mixing of different oils.

Transmission oils for the front and rear axles of the UAZ Hunter and UAZ Patriot

In the crankcase of both axles, the manufacturer recommends using transmission oil SAE 75W-90 according to API - GL-5.

You just need to take into account that the use of oils of a lower category according to the SAE and API classification can lead to premature failure of units and, as a result, expensive repairs. At the same time, using a higher category of oils will be inappropriate, primarily for financial reasons, since they usually cost significantly more.

In order to operate with specific numbers and be able to clearly compare the quality characteristics of different oils, let’s take ZIC 75W-85, 75W-90, 80W-90, 85W-140 transmission oils as an example. Again, it is ZIC 75W-85 that is recommended by the factory for filling into the five-speed DYMOS gearbox.

Transmission oil must provide high-quality lubrication of gears and protect them from scuffing and wear. Therefore, both viscosity and a set of additives are important in its characteristics. Although, of course, in general, transmission oil in the gearbox and transfer case is much easier to work with than engine oil in the engine.

Perhaps the most balanced solution would be to use fully synthetic gear oil ZIC GF TOP 75W-90 of API GL-4/5 quality class in any UAZ gearbox and mechanical transfer case.

Among the above oils, it has the most balanced and highest viscosity * and pour point * . This oil will allow you to avoid difficulties even during the most severe frosts, without interfering with the rotation of their gears at the start of operation of cold units. And in hot weather, although not by much, it will still reduce the natural noise from the operating gears of the gearbox and mechanical transfer case.

The next in terms of quality characteristics is the semi-synthetic oil ZIC G-FF 75W-85 according to API GL-4 and then the synthetic ZIC GF TOP 75W-85 according to API GL-4. With almost identical kinetic viscosity * , semi-synthetics have a slightly higher overall viscosity index * .

If for some reason it is not possible to use 75W-85 or 75W-90 oils at the moment, for example, you urgently need to change the oil in the gearbox and transfer case after a long swim of the car while wading, then it is quite possible to fill in semi-synthetic ZIC G-EP 80W- 90 according to API GL-4. The same oil can be used constantly and all-seasonally for areas with a temperate climate and not very frosty winters.

High viscosity gear oil, such as 75W-140, 80W-140 or 85W-140, is preferable only for areas with very hot climates, and then only if it has an API classification of GL-4, but not GL-5.

Oil of category GL-5 according to the API classification is intended for heavily loaded high-speed hypoid gears; its enhanced extreme pressure and anti-wear functions are ensured by the presence of an increased concentration of additives based on sulfur and phosphorus, which are aggressive towards non-ferrous metals from which gearbox synchronizer rings are made.

Selecting transmission oil for UAZ axles.

With oil for the front and rear axles, everything is somewhat simpler. For their gearboxes with hypoid gears, in all cases, only gear oil of API category GL-5 is suitable, since oil of a lower category will not be able to protect the teeth of the hypoid pair from scuffing and premature wear.

As for the 75W-90 viscosity transmission oil recommended by the factory for all-season use in axles, deviations are possible here. For example, when actively using a car off-road, when after mud or fording, almost after every trip you may need to change the oil in the axles, it is much more financially profitable to fill them with cheaper ZIC G-5 80W-90 according to API GL-5 , and not ZIC GF TOP 75W-90 according to API GL-4/5, although it has more universal characteristics.

As well as for gearboxes, all-season use of high-viscosity transmission oils such as 80W-140 or 85W-140 in axles will be advisable only for areas with a predominantly hot climate, in terms of pour point * such oils are not very suitable even for mild winters.

Transmission oils for gearboxes, mechanical transfer cases and UAZ axles, on the one hand, must maintain high viscosity at operating temperatures in order to form a stable oil film in friction pairs, and on the other hand, not become too viscous at negative ambient temperatures for so that when the transmission units start operating, cold oil does not interfere with the rotation of the gears.

The choice of a specific gear oil manufacturer depends primarily on personal preferences and financial capabilities, so there is no point in advising anything on this matter.

Kinematic viscosity of transmission oil.

Characterizes the degree of oil fluidity at operating temperatures. For practical purposes, the most important is the kinematic viscosity at a temperature of plus 100 degrees. This conditional temperature is closest in value to that which occurs under optimal operating conditions in the crankcases of transmission units and in the areas of the main friction pairs.

A kinematic viscosity value that is too low or, conversely, too high, outside the permissible values, negatively affects the operation of the transmission as a whole. For example, transmission oil with low viscosity better penetrates into the gaps between rubbing surfaces and cools them, but if the viscosity is below the permissible value, the oil is squeezed out of the friction zone and this leads to accelerated wear of parts.

Transmission oil with a viscosity higher than acceptable can create increased rotational resistance, cause an increase in operating temperatures and increase crankcase pressure, which can ultimately lead to oil being squeezed out through the seals.

Viscosity index.

A conditional indicator characterizing the degree of change in the viscosity of transmission oil depending on temperature. The higher the viscosity index in numerical terms, the wider the temperature range for which the oil can be used.

All other things being equal, this means that when overheated, oil with a higher viscosity index thins out more slowly and does not lose its lubricating properties longer, and when cooled strongly, it thickens more slowly, maintaining lubricating properties at low temperatures.

Oil pour point.

This is a low-temperature property that has a strong impact on the operation of the transmission when starting to move after a long period of parking at subzero temperatures. Ignoring the values ​​of this parameter when choosing oil in some cases can lead to damage to parts of transmission units.

What oil is needed for an SUV

When initially refueling the ZMZ Pro Euro 5 engine, used on the Patriot since 2022, original oil of 2 grades is used:

  • synthetic Motor Oil Premium SAE 5W-40, SN/CF;

Oils to replace.
Synthetic based fluid is recommended for severe operating conditions. The type of lubricant filled into the engine is indicated in the accompanying documentation. When servicing a car at an official dealer, the engines are filled with original material recommended by the manufacturer.

When purchasing a used car that has been serviced by the previous owner itself, it is difficult to determine the type and viscosity of the lubricant in the engine. The existing liquid is drained, and the cavity of the power unit is washed with special oil. Then fresh substance is poured in accordance with the plant’s recommendations.

An additional criterion for choosing oil is the climate zone in which the SUV will be operated. The selection of the base is carried out taking into account the maximum and minimum air temperatures in summer and winter. Synthetic materials are suitable for operation at low temperatures because they retain fluidity and facilitate the procedure for cranking the shaft with the starter. When using a synthetic-based fluid, knocking noise may occur from the hydraulic valve lash compensators installed in the gas distribution mechanism. But the use of mineral-based lubricants is not recommended, since the design of the motor is not designed for the use of such substances.

The ZMZ 514 diesel engine (or the less common Iveco) requires the use of oils that meet the API CF-4 specification and higher. The lubricant container must contain an inscription confirming that the substance is suitable for use in diesel engines equipped with a turbocharger.

Antifreeze for UAZ.

The cooling system of the UAZ is rather large, with a volume of 14 liters during a full shift. Coolant G 11 is prescribed; blue high-quality antifreeze concentrate KFS 2000 is suitable here. Let's start changing the oil

To change the transmission oil, you first need to acquire the following materials: two keys for 23 and 24, a technical container (the old oil will drain into it), a filling syringe, a new oil filter, new oil, rags, gloves.

The procedure for changing the oil in a UAZ Patriot manual transmission:

  1. We drive 10 kilometers to warm up the engine to operating temperature.
  2. We place the car on an overpass, or use a lift or inspection pit. In any case, it is necessary to provide full access to the bottom of the car
  3. We climb under the car and place a technical container. The waste will flow into it
  4. On the gearbox we find the oil drain plug, unscrew it with a 23 key, then observe the process of the used oil flowing out along with dirt and metal shavings
  5. Wait for the old fluid to drain. After making sure that the oil has been completely drained, tighten the plug, first cleaning it and the hole from dirt and soot. The copper gasket on the drain plug may have deteriorated. In this case, you will have to install a new plug
  6. Fill the box with new lubricant using a filling syringe. It is necessary to pour in a certain amount of liquid equal to 2.5 liters. You may need to add a little more oil later. So, let's put the plug in place. At this point, the process of changing the oil in the UAZ Patriot manual transmission has been successfully completed, and you can begin further operation of the car.

Flushing

To do this, you will need 500-700 milliliters of “mineral water” (not to be confused with water - this is oil).

Screw the hole from the bottom and pour it into the transmission through the top neck. Let the car idle for a while (4-5 minutes will be enough). The transmission gears must be in neutral. Next, we turn off the engine, substitute our canister and drain the oil by unscrewing the bottom “hatch”. Also remember that you cannot drive it due to its low viscosity - this can lead to scuffing, and, as a result, you will have to repair the UAZ gearbox.

Procedure

The procedure for replacing lubricant in Patriot transmission units is not particularly complicated, however, it requires patience and attentiveness from the performer. To complete the work in full, you will need to drain the used fluid from each of the system components one by one, replacing it with new lubricant. For this purpose, it is first necessary to prepare new oil in a volume sufficient for replacement, a set of car keys, containers for used fluid, as well as work clothes.

The task of replacing fluid in transmission units is carried out from the bottom of the car. In service centers, special lifts are used to ensure unhindered access to drain openings; at home, it will be enough to drive the vehicle onto a pit or overpass.

Before performing the operation, it is important to drive an SUV for about ten kilometers so that the lubricant in the system warms up to operating temperature. Under the influence of temperatures, it will become liquid and will merge faster and better from the aggregates.

Further measures are carried out in accordance with the work schedule for each transmission unit.

Changing the oil in axles

The procedures for changing the oil in UAZ Patriot axles do not differ in execution technology, so let’s look at the procedure for implementing the tasks using the rear axle as an example. In practice, you can successfully perform a replacement by following simple instructions from the car manufacturer:

  1. Locate the drain and fill caps, which are located on the rear axle housing. First, you need to clean the surfaces adjacent to the openings with a metal brush from dirt to avoid it getting into the system.
  2. Next, unscrew the filler plug to relieve pressure, after which you can unscrew the cover of the drainage hole, having previously placed a waste container under it.
  3. While the oil is draining, the plugs must be thoroughly cleaned of metal shavings that may accumulate on the inside of the caps during operation of the machine. After the oil has drained, the oil drain plug is installed in place and clamped with the recommended force.
  4. Using a technical syringe, lubricant is poured into the oil filler opening until it begins to flow out of the hole. This procedure will require about 1.3 liters of oil, depending on the quality of the waste drain.
  5. Don't forget to tighten the filler cap.

The oil change in the front axle of a UAZ Patriot is carried out in a similar way, with the only difference being that the oil filler and drain plugs must be looked for on the front axle housing. The front axle housing will contain no more than 1.4 liters of lubricant. At this point, the procedure for replacing the lubricant in UAZ Patriot axles can be considered successfully completed. Then you can move on to changing the oil in the transfer case and gearbox.

Changing the lubricant in the transfer case

The methodology for changing the oil in the transfer case of a UAZ Patriot is practically no different from the procedure for changing transmission fluid in axles. To perform the procedure, you will need to find the drain and filler holes, clean the surfaces one by one from dirt accumulations and unscrew the filler plug. Then the waste is removed into the prepared container through the drain opening. Once the liquid has drained, you need to tighten the drain plug and fill the oil through the filling opening using a technical syringe to the limit, which will be a little more than two and a half liters in volume.

Along with changing the oil in the axles and transfer case, it is recommended to change the lubricant in the gearbox, the technology of which is the same as in previous situations. When pouring new oil into the gearbox, the level should be monitored using a special dipstick with which the car is equipped. After filling and running in the car, you will need to recheck the level in the gearbox; you may need to top up the oil to normal.

After replacing the lubricant in all transmission components, you need to start the car and drive it for several kilometers, after which you drive it onto the overpass again and check all the joints for fluid leaks, and if necessary, tighten the plugs more tightly.

How much to pour?

New fluid must be poured until it begins to flow from the top “hatch” - this is a signal that the level is at its maximum level. By the way, the remaining fluid is checked using the same principle - using a hex wrench, unscrew the top plug and look at the remaining amount with a dipstick. Even a wooden twig or a long nail can serve as a probe. The main thing is that the item is clean. If there is not enough oil, add it (but do not mix with different brands). Typically, UAZs use Lukoil or its equivalent, similar in name, Yukoil.

What oil is better to fill in UAZ Patriot

The documentation for the vehicle always indicates consumables and their modifications that should be used for replacement. Experienced mechanics do not recommend relying on the advice of a manager at a car shop on purchasing oil for a UAZ engine.

In general, for long-term operation of UAZ Patriot engine parts, semi-synthetic oil with the following parameters 5W30 is poured into it. This lubricant is suitable for both harsh winters and hot summer seasons. It does not turn into a viscous viscous liquid or become too thin after a run of 1000 kilometers.

Of course, many will say that the best lubricant would be 0W40, but it is expensive and not everyone can afford it. And so, I got to the bridges, or rather to changing the oil in them. I also needed to find out the reason for the large idle rotation of the flange, about 90 degrees, of the front axle in which the self-block is installed. The previous owners had no idea what company it was. I drove the car into a warm box, unscrewed the drain and filler plugs on the front axle and saw what was inside.

This kind of oil, or rather an emulsion, was in the front axle. Clear signs of water getting inside the bridge.

While the remaining oil was draining, I opened the diff cover, but to my regret I didn’t find anything terrible there, the gap between the main pair of gears is minimal and almost not felt, the bearings are also free of play, but all the free play is on the axle shafts and their drive in the self-locking unit. In other words, the reason for such idle speed lies in the design of the self-block, I realized this when I looked at the cross-sectional photo of the self-blocks and their operating principle. I didn’t take a photo because there’s nothing to see there, I replaced the gasket and put the cover back in place. And while I was putting the cap on the front, the oil was draining from the rear axle, the situation with the oil there was similar, it was also gray.

When the old oil stopped dripping from the bridges, I started pouring new oil.

Of course, I overpaid a little with the oil, in another store the same thing costs 100 rubles less, but the seller is a wooden consultant, unlike the store where I bought the oil. In total, I spent 1.25 liters on the rear axle, and approximately 1.4 on the front axle. I filled until the moment when oil began to flow from the upper filler hole; in fact, it is also a level indicator.

In total, 3 liters of oil were purchased for 1000 rubles per liter, a cover gasket for 110 rubles and sealant for 100 rubles.

PS before the replacement, a slight hum was heard from the rear axle, after the replacement I still don’t understand it due to slush on the road, it’s just not audible. Next in line is changing the oil in the gearbox and transfer case.

Changing the oil in the front axle of the UAZ Patriot

According to the manufacturer's recommendation, it is necessary to replace the heated lubricant. To do this you need to drive 4–6 kilometers. Warm grease has a thinner consistency and flows out of the drain hole faster. At the end of the movement, the lubricant is replaced as follows:

Install the UAZ Patriot on a pit, lift or overpass. The site must be level, without a side slope;

  • Immobilize the vehicle. To do this, shoes are installed under the wheels;
  • Prepare a container for collecting waste material. The container volume must be at least 2 liters. To facilitate the process, it is necessary to select a container with a large neck;
  • Unscrew the filler plug. This is necessary to supply air to the bridge cavity. If there is insufficient air in the cavity, a vacuum is formed. The plug is located below the middle of the crankcase;

  • Unscrew the drain plug. It is located at the bottom of the crankcase. The plug is unscrewed counterclockwise. To open, a 12 mm hexagon is required;
  • Clean the plugs from oil accumulations, dirt and metal shavings;
  • Screw in the drain plug until it stops;
  • Fill with new lubricant. The filler neck is located at the top. You need to fill in the lubricant using a specialized syringe;

It is in these same volumes that diesel fuel is placed, as well as brake fluid, of course, gasoline or antifreeze, but all the fluids listed for each individual model are individual.   3. Lubricant is injected using a syringe. Filling oil with a watering can will not work. A technical syringe copes with this task better.
  4. Once the desired level is reached, the filling is stopped. The plug is returned to its place.

The work is completed by turning on the engine, which promotes uniform distribution of lubricant.

The algorithm for changing the oil in a Patriot gearbox looks like this:

  5. Use a wrench to unscrew the drain plug.

  7. New transmission oil should be added to the UAZ gearbox through the oil filler hole. In this case, it is worth using a refill syringe. It should be poured into the box in small portions.
  8. The UAZ gearbox has a dipstick. With its help you can control the oil level in the gearbox. If there is a deficiency, liquid is added.

How to do it?

First you need to unscrew the plug from the hole. It is worth noting that there are several of them. The first one, located in the middle of the box, is for the fill, and the one at the bottom is for draining the liquid. It is unscrewed, as on most domestic cars, using a hex key. Before doing this, you should prepare a container in advance where the old oil will be drained.

It can be made from an old canister by cutting off its side part. After draining the fluid, the gearbox (UAZ “Bukhanka” is no exception) undergoes a flushing process.

Many drivers recommend using a long metal syringe with a curved rubber spout for this. Its capacity should be at least 300 milliliters. We also note that the gearbox requires the use of viscous oil, so it will be difficult to fill it in - you need to “syringe” it with force. This is especially noticeable in winter. Then the gear oil turns practically into jelly. To ease the effort, motorists recommend melting this “jelly,” that is, preheating it. Fortunately, this is not gasoline, so nothing will burn or explode - you can safely hold the syringe over a gas burner or burner. If there is no such syringe, and replacement time is running out, then you can use improvised methods. UAZ owners are rich in ideas, and everyone invents their own way. For example, you can use a thin tube and a plastic bottle to fill the oil. The car is jacked up and oil is poured by tilting the bottle. It is important to achieve maximum tightness of the connection (this means the place where the end of the hose touches the neck), otherwise the fluid will not overflow into the transmission, but onto the asphalt. The UAZ gearbox will quickly fail.

Others use a longer tube and run it from the transmission filler neck through the hood. Place a funnel on the top of the hose. This method is simpler than using a plastic bottle.
