About types of transmission oils
Today, two types of gear oils can be found on the fuel and lubricants market: GL-5 standard oil and GL-4 standard oil. Here are their differences:
- GL-4 standard. These are transmission oils used in gearboxes and drive axles with hypoid and bevel gears operating at moderate temperatures and loads;
- GL-5 standard. It includes transmission oils used in high-speed axles and gearboxes operating under conditions of high temperatures and alternating shock loads.
From the above, it becomes clear that the GL-5 standard provides better extreme pressure protection for the gears in the transmission. But this is a common misconception to which many car owners, including VAZ 2107 owners, are susceptible.
Let's take a closer look at this point.
Transmission oils of the GL-5 standard use special complexes of sulfur-phosphorus additives, which create an additional protective layer on the rubbing steel parts of the gearbox. But if such an additive comes into contact with parts containing copper or other soft metal, then the protective layer formed by the additive turns out to be stronger than the copper surface. As a result, wear on the soft metal surface accelerates several times.
Research shows that the use of GL-5 standard lubricant in gearboxes that require GL-4 standard lubricant is not only not advisable, but also dangerous. For example, synchronizers in VAZ 2107 boxes are made of brass. And with prolonged use of GL-5 oil, they will be the first to fail. It is for this reason that the owner of a VAZ 2107 should fill only GL-4 standard oil into the gearbox.
The second most important point that the owner of a VAZ 2107 should remember is the viscosity class of the oil being poured. Today there are two such classes:
- class SAE75W90. It includes semi-synthetic and synthetic transmission oils, which motorists call all-season. This lubricant works in a wide temperature range - from -40 to +35°C. It is this class of oils that is ideal for use in our country;
- class SAE75W85. The upper temperature limit for oils of this class is higher. But it should not exceed 45°C, since at this temperature the oil begins to boil.

How much oil is in the gearbox of a VAZ-2107
VAZ-2107 is a car from the classic family of the Togliatti automobile plant, built on the basis of the Fiat 124 and VAZ-2101. A car with a long pedigree, it has established itself primarily as one of the most maintainable and affordable cars in the world. This model is still in demand on the secondary market today; it is bought due to its simple and cheap design. Most repairs in the case of the VAZ-2107 can be completely solved on our own. One of the most common procedures is replacing consumables - for example, selecting and replacing transmission oil. When dealing with this consumable, you need to take into account several parameters in order to select and replace the oil correctly. In this article, we will look at how much oil is needed for a VAZ-2107 manual transmission, as well as how to choose it based on viscosity information, tolerance, types and best brands.
Level control and required volume
Experts recommend monitoring the transmission fluid level in the gearbox at least every 10 thousand kilometers.
As for how many liters are poured into the gearbox, the volume of the device depends on the number of stages:
- the volume of five-speed units is 1.6 liters;
- Four-speed gearboxes need 1.35 liters.
If you need to add lubricant, you should first check its level in the system. This should be done after the engine and gearbox of the car have cooled down, so that all the oil has time to drain from the inner walls of the transmission.
The stages of work will be as follows:
- The vehicle is driven into a pit or overpass.
- Using a rag or wire brush, clean the drain and filler caps from dirt. You also need to clean the surface of the crankcase around the plugs.
- Using a 17mm wrench, unscrew the filler cap located on the unit body.
- There is no dipstick for checking the level in the VAZ 2107 gearbox. Therefore, a screwdriver can be used to measure the amount of lubricant in the transmission system. If the oil volume is normal, then the fluid level should be at the lower edge of the filler hole.
- If the diagnostics showed that the amount of lubricant is less than required, then the liquid should be topped up and the cap should be screwed on tightly. If the oil level is critically low, you need to diagnose the condition of the gearbox shaft seals. If there are drops of transmission fluid on the gearbox housing, it is necessary to check the integrity of the unit. Check the quality of fixation of the transmission housing covers, tighten the nuts if necessary. If the seals or gaskets on the gearbox are worn out, they need to be replaced.

How much to fill
Having selected the liquid, you can now decide on the volume. So, for a manual 5-speed gearbox, the standard level is set at 1.6 liters, or 1.3 liters for a 4-speed gearbox - this is exactly how much oil should be filled after the gearbox is completely cleaned of old oil. Preparation
To replace the lubricant, you must prepare the following:
- a special syringe with a tube for pouring oil into the unit;
- a cut-off bottle or other container with a volume of up to two liters into which the waste liquid will be drained;

- fresh oil to fill the system;
- rag.

Stages of work
Change the lubricant as follows:
- The change procedure is performed on a warm car. This will allow the hot transmission fluid with all wear products to exit the unit faster. But be careful, because on a warm vehicle the fluid temperature can reach 90 degrees.
- Using a wrench, unscrew the oil filler cap on the transmission unit.
- Before changing the lubricant, the used substance must be drained. To do this, find a drain hole and place a container under it into which the waste will flow. Using a hex wrench, remove the plug.
- After this, the procedure for draining the old fluid will begin. Wait about twenty minutes, during which time the lubricant should leave the system.
- Then clean the drain plug and replace it.
- If, after draining the waste oil, it is noticed that the old oil is dark, almost black, and has signs of wear in the form of metal shavings, we recommend flushing the unit. Since some deposits may remain in it, which will mix with fresh lubricant. For flushing, you will need about one liter of new oil and the same amount of kerosene. Pour the mixture into the unit and screw on the oil filler cap. After this, turn on neutral speed and start the power unit of the car. Let the engine idle for about five minutes, then turn it off. Repeat the draining procedure and screw the hole cap back into place. If there are deposits left in the drained fluid, the flushing process can be repeated.
- Now open the filler plug and add new lubricant to it using a syringe with a tube connected. Fill the gearbox with enough oil so that the level is at the lower edge of the oil filler hole. Then the plug needs to be screwed into place.
- Start the engine and let it run. You can perform a check ride. After this, diagnose the gearbox under the car for leaks. If there are oil leaks, it is necessary to determine the cause and eliminate it.

Consequences of untimely replacement
What can result from an untimely oil change in the VAZ 2107 gearbox:
- The box will be louder. Extraneous noise will appear, uncharacteristic of the gearbox. This may happen when the engine is cold, but as the engine warms up the sounds will disappear. Or the transmission may be noisy regardless of the temperature of the power unit.
- When changing gears, a crunching sound or other extraneous sounds may occur. Failure to change the oil in a timely manner will result in it losing its properties and being unable to properly lubricate the internal parts of the gearbox. Replacing the substance often solves the problem of crunching.
- Faulty gearbox bearings. If the lubrication is poor, bearing mechanisms will operate under high load conditions. This will cause the parts to wear out faster and soon fail. Wear products from bearings and other elements can clog the oil channels, which will affect the increase in pressure in the lines of the transmission system. As a result, the lubricant will begin to squeeze out the oil seals and seals. This problem can lead to a transmission fluid leak.
- The appearance of vibrations during operation of the gearbox. Often the vibrations disappear as the engine warms up, but it is possible that they remain and do not disappear. It is not a fact that the problem is related specifically to the quality of the motor fluid. Perhaps this is a consequence of the use of used oil, which has lost its properties, which led to wear and failure of some structural elements of the unit.
- One of the most serious consequences is gearbox failure. If the car is constantly used with used oil, this can lead to breakdown of the unit. The gearbox will need to be repaired.
About types of transmission oils
The main task of transmission fluid is to create a thin but durable oil film on the surface of parts and mechanisms, thus protecting them from rapid wear.
Modern industry offers a wide range of different fluids, and the quality of the gearbox depends on the correct choice. At the moment, there are three types of oils: synthetic, semi-synthetic and mineral. Each of these mixtures has its own set of characteristics and properties.
Mineral transmission is the most budget option. This oil has good lubricating properties, but has a significant drawback. In extreme cold conditions it freezes very quickly. This, in turn, creates difficulties when starting the engine in sub-zero temperatures.
Unlike mineral water, synthetics and semi-synthetics have a higher price. In addition, such oils thicken less at low temperatures and are excellent for use in fairly severe frosts. Synthetic and semi-synthetic oils also differ from each other. The consistency of semi-synthetic liquid is thicker than synthetics. It is great for cars with high mileage. Synthetic oil is better used for new gearboxes, as it is thinner and can leak if there are even the smallest defects in the seals.
When choosing products, first of all, you need to pay attention to viscosity. This is exactly what the SAE index indicates.
According to SAE standards, transmission fluids are divided into the following categories:
- Summer oil (marking consists of numbers only).
- Winter mixture (in its designation it has the English letter W - winter).
- All-season liquid. The marking of such a lubricant consists of two numbers, which are separated by the letter W. This oil can be used all year round.
Synthetic and semi-synthetic oils that have the following viscosity classes are suitable for the gearbox:
- SAE80W85 is an all-season liquid with a temperature range from -35 °C to +35 °C.
- SAE75W90 is a mixture used at any time of the year with a recommended temperature range from -40 °C to +35 °C.
- SAE75W85 is a multi-season oil, designed for work within the range of -40 °C...+45 °C.
In addition, when choosing transmission fluid, you can come across the API classification. It implies the systematization of lubricants according to their quality, application and performance characteristics. There are 7 groups in total, but only two are the most popular.
So, for the VAZ 2107 gearbox, the manufacturer recommends the following groups of transmission fluids:
- GL-4. This oil is characterized by the presence of a large number of additives. It is used for gearboxes that operate in high gears at low torques and in low gears at high torques.
- GL-5. This fluid was developed for hypoid gears with high axle displacement. This liquid has proven itself when working in harsh conditions. It is recommended for gears that operate at high speeds with low torques and shock loads on gear teeth.
Brand and volume of oil for the VAZ 2107 gearbox The VAZ 2107 gearbox has two modifications - five-speed and four-speed. And depending on this, the volume of liquid poured varies:
- Four-speed gearboxes require 1.35 liters.
- For five-speed gearboxes, 1.6 liters are required.
What mixture should be poured does not depend on the number of stages. It must be a special transmission, selected in accordance with the recommendations of the automaker. That is, the liquid must correspond to the operating conditions of the vehicle.
