Changing the oil on a VAZ 2110: how to do it yourself, how much to fill and what oil is best to use

Changing the oil of a VAZ 2110 is a mandatory and quite responsible procedure, but at the same time it is so simple that almost every car owner can cope with it.

In domestic vehicles produced by AvtoVAZ JSC, the oil change (“working off”) in the engine must be carried out every 10,000 km . And the VAZ 2110 is no exception. The reliability of its operation is largely determined by the quality of regularly performed maintenance, where one of the most important operations is the replacement of used engine oil.

Oil change intervals

Almost any driver knows the regulations for replacing technical fluids in his car, which are established by the manufacturer. But, in addition to the recommended timing, there are cases when the oil needs to be changed “unscheduled”. Such cases include, for example, carrying out a major engine overhaul or running-in. In the latter case, the oil change should occur after 3000 km. This is done in order to eliminate the consequences of break-in, that is, to remove chips from the engine.

Subsequent replacements are carried out after the car “passes” 10-15 thousand kilometers. Considering the quality of motor oils, it is recommended to do this more often, at least once every 8 thousand km.

Remember! The more often the engine oil is changed, the cleaner the engine is from the inside and the longer it retains its service life.

An oil change on a VAZ 2110 with a manual transmission is performed once every 40-60 thousand kilometers, and in an automatic transmission - every 60-80 thousand kilometers.

Engine

There are several engine modifications. Based on this information, you can make a choice in one direction or another.

VAZ 2110 engine modifications

  • VAZ-21100 – 8 valves, 1.5 liter engine. Produced from 1996 to 2000;
  • VAZ-21101 – 8 valves, 1.6 liters, produced since 2004;
  • VAZ-21102 – 8 valves, 1.5 l.;
  • VAZ-21103 16 – valves, 1.5 liter injection engine, produced since 2001;
  • VAZ-21103M – 16 valves, 1.5 l injector, production since 2001;
  • VAZ-21104 – 16 valves, 1.6 l injector, since 2004;
  • VAZ-21104M – 16 valves, 1.6 l injector, since 2004;
  • VAZ-21106 GTI 2.0 16V – 16 valves, 2.0 liter Opel C20XE engine;
  • VAZ-21106 Coupe – VAZ-21106 with a coupe body;
  • VAZ-21107 (Sports modification of the VAZ-21106 car).

What kind of oil should I use and how much?

VAZ 2110 owners often fill in semi-synthetic oils with a viscosity of 10W-40 or 5W-40 (there is no doubt that other viscosities are also poured, but these are the most popular). The only difference is that 5W-40 can be used down to minus 35 degrees and 10W-40 up to minus 30 degrees.

The choice of company is not important; you can take any popular “market brand”.

  • Mobil Super 2000 10W40
  • Valvoline Maxlife 5w-40
  • Total Quartz 10W40
  • Shell Helix 10W40
  • Eneos SuperGasoline 10W40
  • Mobil Ultra 10W40

How to change

  1. We warm up the engine to 45-50 degrees. Warm oil has better fluidity and will drain better from the engine during a complete replacement. Our task is to remove as much as possible the old dirty and used fluid that no longer has useful properties from the engine and fill it with new one. If a lot of old dirty oil remains in the crankcase, it will be swept away with the new one and will worsen its beneficial properties. Warm up the engine for 5-7 minutes before starting, this will be sufficient.
  2. For easy access to the drain plug (and in some models the oil filter is also attached from the bottom) and the bottom of the car as a whole, you need to jack it up or drive into an inspection hole (the best option). Also, some models may have engine crankcase “protection” installed.
  3. We open air access to the crankcase by unscrewing the filler cap and dipstick.
  4. Place a large container (equal to the amount of oil being poured).
  5. Unscrew the drain plug with a wrench. Sometimes the drain plug is made like a regular “bolt” under an open-end wrench, and sometimes it can be unscrewed using a four- or hexagon. Don't forget to wear protective gloves, the oil will most likely wake you up warm, but you need to be careful.
  6. We wait about 10-15 minutes until the waste flows into a basin or cut-off plastic canister.
  7. Optional but very effective! Flushing the engine with a special liquid is not included in the maintenance regulations and is not mandatory - but. By getting a little confused, you will be much better at flushing out the old, black oil from the engine. In this case, wash with the old oil filter for 5-10 minutes. You will be surprised at the black oil that comes out with this liquid. This liquid is very easy to use. A detailed description should appear on the flushing fluid label.
  8. We change the cleaning filter. The seat (the place where the filter is located) needs to be wiped dry with a rag to remove dust and dirt, and only then install a new filter pre-soaked in oil. Lack of oil in the new filter before starting the engine can cause oil starvation, which in turn can cause filter deformation. Overall this is not a good thing. Also remember to lubricate the rubber O-ring before installation.
  9. Fill in new oil. Having made sure that the drain plug is screwed in and a new oil filter is installed, we can begin to fill in new oil using the dipstick as a guide. The level should be between the minimum and maximum marks. Also, you need to remember that after the first start of the engine, some oil will leave and the level will drop.
  10. In the future, when the engine is running, the oil level will probably change; be careful during the first few days of operation. Recheck the oil level using the dipstick after the first start.

Required volume

Before buying motor oil, you need to decide on the volume. The best option is to purchase a 4-liter canister, which will last for a long time. This is convenient, because you can add the remaining liquid as the liquid is consumed, without worrying about buying a new one every time.

Well, now specifically about the one-time filling volume. The engine model plays an important role here. The VAZ 2110 used two engine variations. This is an 8-valve and 16-valve engine. In the first case, the volume of the oil sump is 3.2 liters, and in the second - 3.5 liters.

Manufacturers rating

  • The manufacturer installs the Russian-made BIG Filter product on VAZ 2110 cars. According to reviews from motorists, it lasts the guaranteed period until replacement. Not inferior to imported analogues. Available in green (original), blue (VAZ analogue) colors. Not counterfeited.
  • The leader of the foreign market is MANN Filter products; original versions are produced by Germany (the rays of an ultraviolet lamp allow you to see the date of manufacture on the lid), licensed versions are produced by South Korea, China, Brazil, and India. Due to its worldwide popularity, there are counterfeit copies. The MAHLE company produces high-quality products and is popular in Russia.

Rules for choosing oil

There are three basic rules for choosing engine oil for the “ten”:

  • When purchasing, you must be able to distinguish a fake from the original. Counterfeit oils are a real problem in the modern car market. As a rule, those liquids that are counterfeited are those that have a high cost and are produced by famous brands. The use of such motor oils can have a detrimental effect on the engine.
  • Every car owner should know about the approvals. Each car has its own motor oil tolerances, which determine the permissibility of using a particular liquid.
  • Do not forget about the viscosity of motor oil, which depends on the region of operation, climate and weather conditions.

What to pay attention to

Now let's look at each of the above points in more detail. And first, let's return to fakes and understand the rules for identifying them. The easiest way to recognize it is to look closely at the canister. Even the slightest difference from the original will immediately reveal the efforts of the scammers. Non-original oil is also distinguished by another feature: the absence of a foil protective seal on the filler neck. It should be under the lid. If it is not there, the canister has already been opened, and not real oil was poured into it.

The optimal viscosity of engine oil for the VAZ 2110 is 5W40. Especially if the car is used with low mileage all year round. If the car is used quite often, for example in a taxi, then the oil should be selected according to weather conditions. In Russia, it is recommended to pour 0W30 in winter, and 10W40 or 15W40 in summer.

On a note! Sometimes, as an alternative to oil, regular mineral water is poured after break-in to save money.

A brief overview of the best motor oils

If a car owner finds it difficult to choose motor oil, it is recommended to pay attention to the following brands:

  • Lukoil Lux. This is the cheapest motor oil for the VAZ 2110. It is recommended for use in cars with high mileage. Lukoil Lux is an ideal option for topping up, since the price of a liter canister is only 250-300 rubles. The oil has good cleaning properties, and, most importantly, no one will counterfeit a cheap liquid. After all, you must agree, this is unprofitable.
  • Shell Helix HX8. This is a fairly high-quality oil for VAZ engines. Shell Helix has excellent lubricating properties and is ideal for all types of engines. It is more advisable to use this type of lubricant in an engine after a major overhaul or with a mileage of up to 200 thousand kilometers. In other cases, using this oil is a very dubious pleasure, since the price of a 4 liter canister is 2000 rubles.
  • Elf. Not long ago Elf left the Renault assembly line, but was remembered as a good motor oil. Car owners began to pour it not only into popular foreign cars, but also into VAZ and
  • Lada 110. To have a good effect, it is recommended to change Elf more often than required by the regulations. Ideally, it is recommended to reduce the frequency to 7-8 thousand kilometers.

How to choose

A brand is one thing, but a competent approach to the issue of choosing an oil filter is quite another.

A standard filter has a main element - a filter part. It is created by mixing synthetic, glass and cellulose fibers. To make the product tougher, it is impregnated with special compounds. At the output we have a kind of paper, which is the filter element.

A rubber cuff prevents oil from leaving the oil lines after the engine has stopped.

When purchasing a filter, pay attention to several basic parameters:

  1. Filter housing and cover. These parts must be highly durable. Elasticity is allowed only on seals.
  2. Brand. Still, it is of great importance when choosing. Focus on owner reviews, read the forums of VAZ 2110 car owners.
  3. Quality certificates. The best oil filters are ISO certified. Therefore, the presence of such a designation indicates the right choice.
  4. Price. A good filter designed for the VAZ 2110 should cost about 150 rubles. It is not recommended to take cheaper analogues, and there is little point in using expensive ones.

Oil change methods

Changing the lubricant can be done in two ways:

  • with flushing;
  • without rinsing;

The first is relevant when completely replacing the fluid and switching, for example, to another manufacturer.

With engine flush

Depending on the type of flushing, replacing engine oil can be divided into two types:

  • 5 minutes. This is the most popular type of flushing. How is everything going? A special cleaning fluid is added to old motor oil. Then the motor is started for 5 minutes and allowed to run without load. After this, the old oil is drained along with the flush. This method is good because the old lubricant becomes more liquid and is easily removed from the engine along with the dirt.
  • use of flushing oil. The use of this flushing option when performing a procedure such as changing the oil on a VAZ 2110 is performed as follows: the old oil is drained, then the oil filter is changed, and flushing fluid is poured into the engine. After this, the car must be driven a certain distance without heavy load. Then this oil must be drained and replaced along with the filter. This is a more expensive and high-quality type of washing.

Attention! Flushing the engine is done at your own risk. The fact is that caustic substances can raise coked dirt in layers and clog oil channels. Because of this, the oil pressure in the engine may drop. This is especially dangerous for 16 valve engines. In order to properly flush the engine and fill in a new type of engine oil, it is recommended to use a longer flush.

No engine flushing

If the type, brand and model of engine oil does not change, then the replacement is performed without flushing. To do this, the old oil is drained, the filter is unscrewed, a new one is installed and fresh lubricant is poured in. You don't need to do anything else.

Types of filters

Carbon filter.

Cabin filters come in simple and carbon types. Currently, it is not recommended to install simple filters that do not contain carbon, as it absorbs unpleasant odors. As for the choice, it is quite wide. The main thing is not to forget to mention in the store what kind of filter is needed. Cars before 2003 need one filter, and cars after 2003 need another.

New sample filter.

The most popular elements are those with the following article number:

  1. 21110-8122021-83. This modification is suitable for VAZ-2110 after 2003 release.
  2. NF-6001c "Nevsky Filter". This filter can be installed on cars up to 2003.

Step-by-step instructions for changing the oil in a VAZ 2110

In order to change the engine oil on a VAZ 2110 without problems, you need to adhere to the following procedure:

  1. Place the car on a pit, lift or overpass. Warm up the engine to operating temperature.
  2. Unscrew the bolts securing the motor protection and remove it.
  3. Place a 4-liter container under the tray. A cut-off old canister works well for this.
  4. Unscrew the drain plug and let the old oil drain. While it is draining with both hands, you need to tear off the oil filter and dismantle it. If it does not unscrew, it is recommended to pierce it with a screwdriver and, using it as a lever, unscrew the old filter element.
  5. Install a new oil filter by first pouring a small amount of oil into it and lubricating the rubber band. Visually check that the filter valve is working properly.
  6. Replace the drain plug and screw on the protection.
  7. Fill in new engine oil to the level. Screw on the filler cap and start the engine. Make sure the pressure sensor goes out.
  8. Check the oil level after 3-5 minutes. If it is normal, there is no need to add it; if it is not at the level, it is recommended to drain the excess oil or add the missing oil.

The procedure is no different from the same one when changing the oil in a VAZ 2110 gearbox.

Preparatory activities

Before changing the oil, be sure to buy new fluid, purchase an oil filter and warm up the engine to operating temperature. You should also prepare a container for old motor oil. To make it, you need to cut the side of the canister along the perimeter to get a wide but spacious container. The same container will also be needed when changing the oil on a VAZ 2110 in a box.

Required Tools

To replace, you will need the following list of tools:

  • A standard set of keys, of which you only need a 17-size open-end wrench for the drain plug and 8- and 10-size sockets for removing the crankcase protection.
  • Additionally, it is recommended to purchase an oil filter puller, which is especially important if the oil is changed for the first time. After all, it is unknown at what point the old filter will be tightened.
  • It is better to have a special funnel for filling in old oil.

troubleshooting

Don't rush to conclusions and blame the pump for everything. It is necessary to organize a full check to make sure what caused the signal to appear on the dashboard.

Check area

Your actions

You need to check the functionality of the electrical circuit that goes from the sensor to the instrument panel. The wire that goes from the regulator to the engine must be connected to ground. If the circuit is working properly, the lamp will go out.

Checking the oil filter

Just unscrew the oil pressure sensor. If it is soaked in lubricant, everything is fine. If it is dry, then the filter is clogged or the filter valve is stuck.

Checking internal elements

You will need to replace the filter if there is a problem with it. Next, the pan is opened and the condition of the oil receiver and rubber seals are inspected.

If the measures taken did not produce results, the lamp still does not go out, then the pump is the culprit in the current situation.

Useful information

Let's talk a little about the principles of the design and operation of the oil pump. This can help you during the repair process.

  1. Domestic “tens” use a combined lubrication system.
  2. The design of the car provides for the presence of a gear oil pump. It is installed on the front end of the cylinder block.
  3. Special gears with trochoidal internal gearing help reduce mechanical losses during rotation.
  4. The pump is equipped with a full-flow filter with a non-separable design. It contains an anti-drip and bypass valve.
  5. This design guarantees efficient circulation of lubricant throughout all engine components.
  6. The pump operates by rotating the crankshaft. The connection is direct.
  7. The operating life of the pump is about 120 thousand kilometers.

Location

Not everyone knows where to look for this oil filter. It is not located in a visible place, so you will have to try hard to gain access to the device.

The MN is located directly inside the engine oil sump. To get to it, the oil must be drained from the engine.

Element location

Please note that if your engine uses high-quality oil that was only recently filled, use a clean container when draining it so that you can then refill the same substance. If the oil is old, replacing the pump is an excellent reason to change the lubricant.

Power steering (power steering)

Power steering helps you turn the steering wheel along with the wheels, while you spend several times less force than a car without a power steering system.

There are marks on the power steering expansion tank by which you can understand whether the fluid level is currently high or, conversely, low and needs to be added. A quick inspection of the power steering system can solve many problems along the way, so look under the hood once a month.

What should you pay attention to?

  • Monitoring the power steering fluid (oil) level and its color in the expansion tank;
  • Checking the drive belt for the power steering pump;
  • General condition of hoses (inspection for cracks, abrasions and chips);
  • Hose connection points.

How to change

Changing the power steering fluid (oil) can be done in several ways, including partially changing the fluid and completely changing it. The first method is faster and easier, the second is better.

Partial replacement

Partial replacement of power steering fluid involves pumping fluid out of the power steering expansion tank using a large syringe or bulb. After the tank is completely empty, fill in fresh fluid to the maximum mark. Start the car and turn the steering wheel left/right. After a few minutes, turn off the engine and check the color of the power steering fluid. If it is too dark, repeat the procedure until the desired result.

Complete replacement

To replace the power steering fluid, remove the air duct and the reservoir with power steering fluid. Pour the old liquid from the barrel into another container. When draining, pay attention to the condition of the old oil and the presence of foreign metal particles. If they are noticeable, this may indicate wear on the pump. To completely drain the power steering, you can rotate the steering wheel left and right.

Determining the volume: how much is needed?

Now let's figure out how much oil to pour into the VAZ-2112 gearbox. When determining the required volume of transmission fluid for orientation, you can start from the factory indicators. The volume of the gearbox allows for the filling of three and a half liters of transmission fluid. This figure is relevant for both manual transmission and automatic transmission.

It is this figure that is measured on the dipstick, which every VAZ-2112 owner should have. But there is an opinion that better lubrication can be achieved by exceeding this figure. That is, you need to overflow the MAX mark of the dipstick by a few mm.

Recommended excess standards are set at approximately 2.5 - 3 mm. from the maximum value. The oil level will then be slightly higher and this will give the screws and bolts some extra lubrication. This trick makes the box more sensitive and makes its operation softer. Whether this method suits you, or whether you would prefer to stay at the recommended factory mark - decide for yourself.
