What do they pour at the factory?

The company's assembly shops primarily use TOTAL products. Brands are partners and liquids are extremely tailored to requirements and specifications. On the assembly line, for model 308 the formulas are applied:

  • Total Quartz Energy 0w-30;
  • Total Quartz 5w-30.

Official dealers use the same mixtures during warranty. However, at the end of service obligations, some motorists prefer to choose a substitute. The actions are justified by the unavailability of liquids in some regions or the inappropriate pricing policy of the brand.

How to choose an analogue

When choosing an oil substitute for a Peugeot 308 engine, you need to pay attention to the main factors.

The basis

In 2022, 3 types of lubricants are used as a basis.

  1. Mineral. Considered obsolete. Oils are obtained by distilling petroleum through distillers. They stand out for their minimal cost and moderate properties. Among the advantages is the democratic cost.
  2. Semi-synthetic. It represents a transitional link, distinguished by moderation on all fronts. Among the shortcomings is the unsuitability for use in critical conditions.
  3. Synthetics. Completely artificial lubricants designed for harsh loads and high temperatures. The advantages are resistance to mechanical destruction and temperature oxidation. There is also a long service life.

Completely artificial fluids are poured from the assembly line into the Peugeot 308 car.

Tolerances

PSA Corporation sets its own requirements for motor oils. For the three hundred and eighth version of Peugeot, modern standards apply.

  1. B71 2290 - a standard introduced after 2009, applicable to diesel units equipped with particulate filters and exhaust recirculators in accordance with Euro 5. The document was created based on the requirements of the ACEA C2/3 specification. It is a low ash oil.
  2. B71 2294 - the requirement is based on a similar ACEA A3/B4 standard for gasoline engines with installed turbocharging and direct fuel injection. Current since 2009.
  3. B71 2296 is a toughened version of the previous document.

Viscosity

According to the SAE J300 specification and PSA requirements, 308 version engines are required to be filled with mixtures that meet weather conditions and engine specifications.

For central Russia, the following types of lubricants are used:

  • 0W30;
  • 5W30;
  • 5W40.

More accurate information can be found in the service manual of each car (depending on the engine model).

Replacement Regulations

The manufacturer advises changing the engine oil according to the regulations, which for the Peugeot 308 is 15 thousand kilometers. But Russian motorists, and especially fans of the Peugeot brand, prefer to fill in oil before this time. This is due to the difficult climatic conditions in our country. Thus, in European countries with a favorable weather climate, you can only follow the manufacturer’s instructions, since in such conditions the oil service life is quite long. Russian owners of the Peugeot 308, on the contrary, will have to proceed more from practical considerations. The fact is that in Russia you can encounter absolutely any peculiarities of road and climatic factors. In addition, motorists often violate operating conditions themselves. Here are a few signs that may require more frequent oil changes:

  • Speeding, failure to comply with traffic rules
  • Frequent driving on bad and dusty roads, including off-road
  • Constant temperature changes, dirt and slush on the roads, evaporation
  • Sudden maneuvers, high engine speeds, engine overheating, etc.

Any of these signs can negatively affect the frequency of oil changes, and at the same time the service life of the engine. In such cases, it is advisable to change the oil no later than after 5 thousand kilometers. This is the most optimal regulation, under which the oil will not have time to lose its beneficial properties and will protect the engine from overheating. In addition, with more frequent oil changes due to the above symptoms, it is strongly recommended to monitor the volume and condition of consumables as often as possible.

Note! When purchasing a new canister of oil, you must take into account that the average lubricant consumption for engines is considered to be within 300-400 grams per 1000 km. The indicator is considered normal up to a loss of 0.7 l/1t.km.

Leaks and problems

The higher the mileage of the Peugeot 308, the more problems appear, as in principle with any car. Most often this is due to natural wear and tear of the engine, causing oil to burn. Although the manufacturer allows for consumption and directly writes about this in the instructions.

In communities about this car you can find information that engines are very sensitive to bad oil. And if you fill it with a high-quality product, then the problem of obesity is not so acute.

In general, EP6 engines structurally suffer from increased oil consumption and a consumption of 200-300 grams per thousand is considered the norm. But if oil consumption has increased significantly, then it is worth trying to decarbonize. You can also try flushing the oil system with special chemicals. If these methods do not help, then you should think about repairs.

For reference, the distance on the dipstick between the MIN and MAX marks holds 1-1.2 liters of oil, regardless of the size of the installed engine.

All this is general information, which may manifest itself differently on each specific vehicle, since everyone’s operating modes are different. The same applies to leak locations; it is impossible to identify the cause from a distance.

Analogs

In 90% of cases, car enthusiasts use the following mixtures as oil substitutes for the Peugeot 308 engine:

  • MOBIL 1 ESP;
  • MOTUL 8100 Eco-clean;
  • Mobil 1 ESP Formula;
  • LUKOIL Genesis Advanced;
  • SHELL Helix Ultra L;
  • VALVOLINE SynPower;
  • MOBIL Super 3000 X1 Diesel;

  • TOTAL Quartz 9000.

Step-by-step instruction:

  • Warm up the car so that the oil becomes fluid and can be easily drained; to do this, start the car and let it idle for 7-10 minutes.
  • After this, place the car on a flat, horizontal surface, for example, in a garage.
  • After the engine is turned off, unscrew the filler cap. Remove the engine protection by unscrewing the mounting bolts.
  • We are replacing the oil filter, which has a cassette design. To do this, remove the plastic cover, slightly loosen the clamp, gain access to the air intake, and remove it. On the side of the engine there is an old oil filter, which we remove .

  • We place a container for draining old engine oil under the hole in the engine crankcase. We unscrew the drain plug and let the oil drain, then screw the plug back in.
  • Fill the engine with new oil through the oil filler hole. Fill in 2.5 liters of engine fluid, then add 150 - 200 ml of fluid until it reaches the maximum mark on the dipstick.
  • Screw on the neck cap.
  • We start the car engine and make sure that light goes out , this will be a signal that you have done all the previous steps correctly.
  • We turn off the engine, wait until it cools down, and carry out a control measurement of the oil, if necessary, add it.

Don’t forget to reset the counter, which records the timing of scheduled maintenance.

In order to do this, turn on the ignition and hold the counter button to zero. When zero , release the button.

Peugeot 308 gearbox oil

The machine is equipped with two versions of gearboxes. For each type of lubricant, a different one is used.

Automatic transmission

It is recommended to pour ATF 4 standard mixtures into the machine. The service life of one portion is 80,000 km or 3 years, whichever comes first.

The crankcase capacity together with the torque converter is limited to 5.9 liters. A partial replacement will require about 3.0 liters.

Manual transmission

A more popular type of block requires the use of synthetic fluids such as API GL-5. Brass synchronizers are not used here, so the abundance of additives will not harm the transmission.

The viscosity for central Russia and the CIS is 75W90. Analogues with excellent performance are used only after consultation with specialists.

The crankcase capacity is limited to 1.9 liters, and the service life of the fluid does not exceed 50,000 km or two years from the date of filling.

What tools are needed for replacement?

The work of changing the oil, although not difficult, requires concentration and attentiveness from the performer, therefore it is advisable to first prepare all the tools and materials for performing the procedure, so as not to be distracted by searching for them at an inopportune moment.

Regardless of the engine version of your car, the set of materials required for work looks standard:

  • a set of car keys, including an extension and a wrench;
  • container for used emulsion, its volume must be no less than the displacement of oil that is included in the unit;
  • a metal brush and rags, they will be needed to clean the surfaces of the unit;
  • direct funnel for filling lubricant;
  • protective clothing.

In addition to tools, you need to stock up on materials and consumables needed for replacement. It is important to purchase oil in advance in the required volume, a new filtration element of the original type, and you may also need a new sealing ring for the drain hole.

Design Features

The atmospheric high-resource EP6 engine has the following design features:

  • adjustment of timing phases using the VTi mechanism by changing valve lift in the range of 0.2 - 9.5 mm and a time shift;
  • cooling jacket assembly integrated into the cylinder block;
  • DOHC timing mechanism to improve performance;
  • reduction in crankshaft weight, new manufacturing technology for connecting rods (double-sided forging) and cylinder head (casting without a mold);
  • improved attachments - pump and oil pump with adjustable capacity reduce fuel consumption and increase power, ensure high-quality and timely lubrication and coolant circulation;
  • adaptation for manual transmission with 5 steps BE4/5N and 4-range automatic adaptive Tiptronic System Porsche AL4, 6-speed MSM/V and automatic 6-range Aisin AT6 from Porsche.


Design of the gas distribution mechanism

The manufacturer recommends this engine for difficult operating conditions, that is, harsh climates, gasoline and low-quality RF oil. For French engines, a major overhaul with your own hands is most often impossible, since even specialized services do not always have the necessary devices and special tools.


Desiccant for repair EP6

The cooling and lubrication system is self-serviced. Even having a description of replacing the timing chain, it is very difficult to carry out the operation yourself, since you will need pullers and complex adjustment of the phase distribution.
