Today's post will be devoted to such a problem as the unsuccessful start of the Kalina engine. If your car does not start the first time, then this already indicates a certain problem that leads to this result.
There can be a great many reasons why the engine does not start immediately, and it is unlikely that it will even be possible to consider everything within the confines of this article. But still, we will try to provide below a list of the main problems that may be involved in poor starting of the Kalina engine.
- Low fuel pressure in the rail . After a long period of parking, the pressure in the fuel rail decreases. And to start the engine, normal operation of the fuel pump is required to create the very pressure that is necessary. If the pump no longer copes with its task 100%, then this may be the reason that the engine does not start the first time. The second time the pump pumps more pressure into the ramp, and Kalina starts right away. This was one of the possible problems; below we will consider other options.
- Ignition coil malfunction . This can be applied to both 8 and 16 valve engines. If the coil begins to act up, then it is possible that the first launch attempts may be unsuccessful. This can be especially true in damp weather or in winter at sub-zero temperatures. A clear example of such a problem was discussed in the blog some time ago, and you can read about it here.
- Crankshaft sensor malfunction . This happens extremely rarely, and in most cases, sensor failure immediately leads to the fact that the engine does not start and there is no spark. But sometimes, if the crankshaft position sensor is faulty, your Kalina may have difficulty starting: the second or third time.
- Failure of the IAC or TPS . If problems arise with these sensors, interruptions in engine operation and even poor starting may occur. The BC cannot always show errors in these sensors, and the most ideal option is to install known-good elements to check their functionality.
- Low-quality gasoline can also cause poor starting. To verify this from your own experience, it is enough to drive at least a day on 92 gasoline - on a 16-valve Kalina.
- Start blocking by immobilizer . I think many have heard about this and some owners have even encountered it. In this case, you can first retrain the key, and if this does not help, contact a specialist for repair or shutdown.
Kalina won't start, what should I check?
Usually all troubles do not come at once.
Until the Kalina stops starting, there will be unstable engine operation and starting problems. It happens that the starter turns, but the engine does not respond at all.
In this case, you should first look at the Kalina package. Namely, for the presence of an alarm and immobilizer.
Anti-theft systems of any car, including Kalina, sometimes turn against their owner. Triggering the alarm allows the starter to turn, but opens the ignition circuit. As a result, the sparking process does not occur. How to determine if the anti-theft system is faulty:
- All car alarms are equipped with an LED indicator. If you try to turn the engine with the starter, and the diode at this time shows an alarm state, then the spark does not enter the cylinders. Consequently, all attempts to start Kalina will not be successful.
- Kalina's immobilizer has a status indicator lamp. If there is a key in the ignition, this lamp should go out. Otherwise, the key is faulty. Only a spare can save you.
The starter turns - to no avail?
The car is needed urgently and there is no way to take it for diagnostics. We analyze all possible faults.
We also need to remember that Kalina is a modern car and it has an electronic control unit that is responsible for the operation of all systems. In particular, there is a crankshaft position sensor on the drive pulley.
The signal from it goes to the ECU. If there is a short circuit in the sensor, the control unit prevents the engine from starting.
Remove and check the sensor using a tester. If it is faulty, then turn it off and try to turn the engine with the starter. True, when working without a position sensor, “CHECK ENGINE” will pop up on the dashboard. But if this is not the main thing for you, and the main thing is to start Kalina as quickly as possible and go about your business, then this is the best option.
Another malfunction that allows the starter to spin, but does not allow the engine to start. The most common problem in cars starting from the tenth family is the failure of the ignition module. But it rarely breaks without any prerequisites.
Pay attention to how your Kalina behaved in the last days before the breakdown. If the engine was troubled before, then most likely the fault lies in the module. It can be repaired, but few people take on it.
Therefore, the best option is to replace the ignition module on Kalina.
If the Lada Kalina does not start, then it is likely that the problem is in the immobilizer. Even an inexperienced car owner can notice it. If it blinks or starts beeping, it means it is clearly faulty. It is very difficult to fix the problem yourself, there are many nuances and features, so you need to contact specialists.
A broken timing belt is the most serious problem due to which the Lada Kalina may not start. You can’t do this without the qualified help of craftsmen.
Low quality gasoline also affects engine performance. Candles can be filled with low-quality gasoline and become unusable. In winter, condensation often forms and clogs the coarse filter. To solve the problem, it is enough to add pure alcohol to the fuel from time to time.
It is advisable to always refuel your car at large gas stations where high-quality fuel is available, otherwise you will regularly face the problem when the vehicle will not start after several attempts. If the fuel pump does not pump, then the problem is not only in the gasoline, but also in the device itself.
You need to make sure whether it is working or not.
To summarize, we note that the Lada Kalina may not start for absolutely different reasons. The problem is not always in the engine. Most breakdowns can be fixed by yourself if you understand the problem. But it is better to entrust such matters to masters who have the appropriate knowledge, experience and capabilities.
It happens that the Lada Kalina does not want to start when the starter is working. What to do in this case, and where to look for the problem? In this article we will look at exactly these problems that often ruin the lives of motorists.
What to do if you cannot start the Lada Kalina engine when the starter is turning
If we consider the issue from the technical service side, they will immediately say that the immobilizer has failed, but everything is not so simple. It may be not only about the security robot, but also about other things.
So, it is worth considering the main reasons for this malfunction:
All these reasons will lead to the fact that the engine will not start, but the starter will turn.
Does not start? Let's consider elimination methods
So, it’s worth sequentially looking at the actions that will help normalize the operation of the motor. But before that, you should prepare. So, what tools will be useful: a tester, a set of keys and wrenches.
Now that you are armed with everything you need, you can get to work:
If none of the checks yielded results, then you should prepare for the worst.
The problem lies in the candles
One of the reasons for the engine not starting is problems with spark plugs. When the Lada Kalina starts and stalls, this indicates that the spark plugs are flooded. This happens especially often in winter, frosty times, when a tired engine works at full power and cannot always cope with the load.
Dealing with flooded spark plugs is probably the simplest thing; even an inexperienced driver can handle it. You can dry the spark plugs by pressing the gas pedal all the way and holding it in this position for 15 seconds. If this method does not help, you will have to get out of the warm interior, open the hood and dry the spark plugs manually.
It's done like this. Take any brush, with which the candles are cleaned of carbon deposits, after which they are dried either with a hairdryer or in the oven; in the latter case, it is important not to overexpose them. In order not to bother with drying (this is especially annoying when you have to rush somewhere), it is better to always keep a set of spare spark plugs in the glove compartment. Install new ones and go about your business in peace. Just remember to dry the ones you took out in the evening.
If the Lada engine does not start well, what else could be the cause of the problem? Today it is very difficult to find high-quality fuel, especially when it comes to gas stations on the highway. It is advisable to fill up with fuel at gas stations that have been tested by time and other motorists. Don't expect the motor to eat everything. After several uses of low-quality fuel, it will certainly stall, after coughing and smoking.
Where there is gasoline, there is a fuel pump. This device malfunctions during the colder months of the year. This device is very complex, and it is better not to delve into it yourself; only an experienced technician will be able to fix the problem without bad consequences for the machine. But the driver can easily cope with a broken timing belt on his own. To do this, you simply need to replace the belt according to the instructions. We wish you patience and good mood when operating the car!
The main culprits of the engine not starting
So what to do if Kalina does not start and does not turn the starter? There are many reasons. Some problems can be fixed on your own, while others can only be fixed at specialized service stations.
Immobilizer
Not all Kalinas have the immobilizer activated from the factory, but you can disable it if you are afraid of its glitches. If you do not have it activated, then this problem should not affect you.
This may be the first reason why the car won't start. You can fix it yourself. If the immobilizer starts blinking, then in order to understand the specific cause of the malfunction you need to sit down and read the manual: what each light means, as well as the frequency of flashes and buzzers. In the cold season, the car can only be started after 5-6 times.
The photo shows a red key for clarity. The red block in the photo is a memory element for the immobilizer; it can become out of sync or break.
This problem can be solved by reflashing the key.
Starter
In the case when the previous system is in good condition, another reason why the car does not start may be the starter. Only a deaf person would fail to notice that this unit is not working.
Starter under the hood of Kalina. Check the power to the starter, circled in red.
If the starter does not make any sounds when turning the ignition key, the battery may also be discharged. When, after checking the starter relay and, if necessary, recharging the battery, the starter does not spin, then most likely it is not working.
There may be a breakdown in the unit itself or in the wiring. To check whether voltage is being supplied to the starter, you need to use a voltmeter. After connecting to the car network, it should have 12-14 volts. Cleaning the contacts will also help here.
If this does not help, then you should go to a service station.
Control unit (ECU)
This is also a common reason why the engine will not start. Usually, if you don't touch it, there are no problems with it. Often the unit can fail when it is flooded with water. This is a design flaw, or rather a flaw in the location of the ECU (a known problem with Kalin).
The ECU in Kalina is located at the bottom; due to leaks during rain, it can easily be flooded with water
In this case, the block will have to be replaced completely. To protect yourself, you should insulate it well or move it to another place under the hood. You cannot wrap the block in polyethylene, as it will fail due to condensation.
Candles
Condition of the candles in the photo
They are usually flooded in the cold season. This can also happen when the battery is weak. In this case, you need to dry the candles. They can be cleaned from carbon deposits with a toothbrush. The gap should also be kept within 0.8-1 millimeter. You can also use a hairdryer. If you have spare spark plugs, you can replace them.
Fuel
It can also be the reason why the engine will not start. To protect yourself from low-quality fuel, you need to refuel your car only at time-tested gas stations.
Fuel pump and relay
The fuel pump is universal and fits all models of the VAZ family.
If the engine does not start when the starter cranks the engine, then the cause may be the fuel pump and it needs to be replaced. You need to open the hood and find the cap to the left of the injectors. When you press it, gasoline should spray out. When gasoline enters the engine, it is not the fuel pump. The relay may fail.
Electrics
The last reason why such a malfunction may occur is electrical parts and circuits. So, the problem may lie in the starter, electronic control unit or wiring. We discard the main cause of the battery, because if it is dead, then the car will not start the second time. Let's consider all the reasons separately.
Starter
Problems in the operation and failure of the elements of this unit can cause a poor start.
So, a failure of the solenoid relay or bendix may cause the Kalina to not start the first time. Also, it is worth checking the wires, which can oxidize and skip contacts every once in a while.
Starter device
Wiring
Breakdowns and problems in the wiring can cause the car to not start the first time. So, you should look for a problem between the battery terminals and the starter, as well as the ignition coil and spark plugs.
Carbon deposits on spark plugs can cause poor engine starting.
ECU
The electronic control unit can be the main reason why the car does not want to start the first time. Thus, a large number of errors can lead to the issuance of incorrect commands. For example, incorrect amount of fuel distributed or mixture enrichment. It’s worth getting into the ECU after the fuel system, ignition and starter have been checked. The cause is eliminated by resetting errors or changing the firmware.
Electronic control unit errors
Diagnostics
To check the amplifier in a car, you need to remove the plastic trim on the steering column; to do this, unscrew the bolts securing it from the bottom.
Then you will need to get to the 8-pin plug, its pinout is as follows:
- The blue contact is connected to the ignition switch, this is 12 volt power;
- the red-brown contact is the connection cable to the tachometer;
- the gray contact goes to the car speed controller;
- white and pink wire - amplifier control indicator;
- black-yellow contact is a diagnostic line;
- the next contact is empty, the wire is not connected to it;
- brown contact is ground;
- empty.
More accurate results will be obtained by checking the amplifier using a scanner. But since such equipment can usually only be found at service stations, you can try to check the operation of the system with a paper clip.
To check you need to do the following:
- First the ignition is turned off.
- Then, using a paper clip, you need to close contacts numbered 6 and 7 of this plug, while the plug itself does not need to be removed.
- Next, the ignition must be turned on.
- After completing these steps, the EUR failure indicator located in the dashboard will begin to blink; by the number of blinks, you can determine whether the system is broken (the author of the video is Gosha Vakhromeev).
- one long signal and one short signal - the electric amplifier is working;
- one long and two short - no engine speed signal;
- one long and three short - the torque controller is out of order or there is no power supply;
- one long and four short blinks—problems in the operation of the electric power steering motor;
- one long and five short - the steering shaft position controller has failed;
- one long and six short - the motor rotor position controller has failed;
- one long and seven short - problems with the electrical network - the voltage is either too high or very low;
- one long and eight short - the control module of the electric amplifier has failed;
- one long and nine short - the speed controller is broken.
Main reasons
The engine does not start the first time
Kalina has a fairly common reason that it does not start the first time. This is due to design, wear and tear and electrical issues. But, it is worth breaking the problems into categories and considering them in more detail. So, let's look at the main categories into which this malfunction is divided:
- Problem with the fuel system.
- The reason is the ignition.
- Failure of timing elements.
- The problem is in the operation of electrical circuits and the ECU.
When everything is sorted out into the causes, it is worth considering them in more detail and how to eliminate them on the car.
Fuel system
The first reason that a car may not start the first time is the fuel system. Insufficient fuel or too much gasoline becomes a problem. In this case, the starter turns, but starting is difficult. If the starter does not turn and the immobilizer icon is flashing, then the problem is already on the immobilizer side.
Fuel pump wear
A failure of the fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter can cause the pressure in the fuel line to be insufficient and the mixture to be lean. Accordingly, the small amount of fuel in the combustion chambers is not enough to start the engine. If too much fuel mixture is supplied, the spark plugs are simply thrown and there is no spark to ignite, which causes the engine to not start.
Ignition
The second reason for poor starting is a malfunction of the ignition system. The problem may lie in the following nodes:
- Ignition switch malfunction.
- Breakdown in high-voltage wires.
- Spark plugs are worn out or dirty.
When considering the problem, it is necessary, first of all, to pay attention to the spark plugs, clean them and adjust the gaps using a feeler gauge.
Next, you need to check the ignition wires, resistance and insulation damage. If necessary, it is worth replacing failed products.
Knocking noise when braking from behind
Car : Lada Granta. Asks : Pavel. Brake system : Without ABS Symptoms : a knocking sound is heard in the area of the rear left wheel when braking.
A knocking sound appeared on a Lada Granta when braking. A knock is heard in the area of the rear left wheel. I thought I had torn off the brake pad lining, it was cold and the pads froze a couple of times. I removed the drum to replace the pads, and the linings are in place, the spacer bar also fits tightly and does not rattle.
I pulled the stabilizer, trailing arm, shock absorber, there were no knocks or play. I shook the suspended wheel in the horizontal and vertical planes, there was no knock. What else could it be?
Reasons why a car won't start
It also happens: the immobilizer is silent, does not give any sound or color signals, but the Lada Kalina still does not start. The cause may be problems with the starter. It is even easier to recognize a failure of this device than an immobilizer. If everything is fine with the starter, when you start the engine you will always hear a healthy, peaceful rumbling of the engine. There will be no sound when the starter stalls.
How to remove a broken starter
Starter operation may be affected by a discharged battery. You can understand this by looking at the instrument panel - not a single light on it will be lit. If the lights are on, you need to check a simple test: turn on the high beam headlights and see how they burn. A dim glow confirms our guess; in this case, the battery should be recharged. Good headlights dispel all doubts in this regard.
But it also happens differently: for the first twenty seconds the headlights burn perfectly, brightly, and then they slowly begin to go out, like a burning candle. This is a bad sign, you will have to tinker. In this case, either the starter itself or the wiring has failed. The wiring is checked with a voltmeter; people call this device “tseshka”. Do not forget that the wires are connected as necessary, but in a strict order: red - to the starter contact, black - to the car body. The norm is considered to be from 12.5 to 14.5 W.
A lower figure indicates serious problems with the wiring. To solve them, you need to clean the contacts, inspect the fuses and wires, in case there is a break or burnt areas somewhere. If these emergency methods do not help and the car does not start again, you will have to somehow get it to the workshop. There is special equipment that will determine the causes of the breakdown in a matter of minutes.
Checking the wiring operation
There is, of course, a radical method, which is better to resort to in the most extreme cases, for example, when the car stalled somewhere in the middle of the road, far from the city. The method is called “pusher,” but there is one caveat: you need to find two or three strong guys who will agree to help a little and push the car.
In order for the engine to fire, the starter contact must be closed directly, for which the car is placed in neutral gear, or better yet, the handbrake. Having done this tricky manipulation, turn on the ignition and conduct current from any wire with the “+” sign to the starter. The main requirement for the wire is the presence of voltage, which can be borrowed from the battery (“+” to the starter, and “-” to ground) or from the lights. When the current begins to act on the starter, it starts to move and spins the motor shaft. The car wakes up from hibernation and comes to its senses for a while. But even if the car starts up this way, don’t rush to rejoice. This is only a one-time procedure, after which the car must be taken to a service station, otherwise the repair will cost you a pretty penny.
Features of the starter and immobilizer
Kalina is sensitive to poor fuel quality
Kalina was assembled using technology, some of which was borrowed from old developments, and some was taken from imported projects and slightly adjusted in our manner. Everything would be fine, but Kalina reacts poorly to the slightest tests of strength. Broken roads, low-quality gasoline or something else like that lead it to a state of collapse.
Because of this, Kalina is much inferior not only to its imported analogues, but even to the simple domestic UAZ, which, although it is a drab little car, is reliable and, with proper care, will last for decades. With Kalina there is no hope for this.
The causes of starting problems may lie in the engine. Perhaps you had to fill the car with gasoline that was not of the best quality, which contained impurities that played a fatal role in the performance of the car. Another option is that some parts are worn out and need to be replaced.
There are more complicated reasons, for example, failures in the electronic system of the power unit. In this case, it will be very difficult to cope with the breakdown on your own, and it is more advisable to turn to specialists. A defective fuel pump can also affect your car's starting, and the list of possible problems goes on and on.
It was in vain that the AvtoVAZ team decided to follow the western path, without having the proper experience. Of course, we wanted the best, but it turned out as always. Let Kalina be a logical continuation of the well-known “fives” and “sevens”, albeit not a bright one, but a more or less reliable car. But the masters embarked on experiments that have been going on for decades, but they cannot be called successful.
This is interesting: The first signs that indicate that it is time to change the shock absorbers
Immobilizer control unit
An immobilizer is a good thing, but only when its design meets all existing reliability requirements. But Kalina’s immobilizer often fails. The problem will be indicated by a flashing signal sent by the device. You can often hear a characteristic warning sound. Fixing a breakdown is not easy.
First, you need to diagnose the immobilizer by monitoring the light bulb signals and counting them by seconds. Then you will have to look at the operating instructions, where the decoding of this Morse code should be given. Based on what signals the light bulb gave us, we decide what to do next.
Spark plug
If everything is in order with the electronic filling, you should look for the problem in the candles. Often, and especially in winter, it floods.
Compression in the engine in cold weather does not meet the standards, so the engine may not start immediately. Often flooding of spark plugs occurs due to a discharged battery, which is unable to produce a normal spark. If not, the reasons may also be in the wiring or the spark plugs themselves. The easiest way to dry the spark plugs is to press the gas to the floor and crank the engine with the starter two or more times. Often, after this the car will start. If this does not help, then for more thorough drying you should dismantle the spark plugs, then clean them, check the gap, and then dry them with a hairdryer or in the oven.
How can I lubricate and adjust the EUR?
How and with what to lubricate the amplifier?
Litol can be used as a lubricant; the procedure is performed as follows:
- First you need to remove the plastic casing; to do this, unscrew the bolts that secure it. To unscrew, use a Phillips head screwdriver. It is also advisable to remove the lower cross member of the instrument panel, located under the steering wheel.
- Next, unscrew the two bolts that secure the amplifier itself; for this you will need a 13mm wrench. After this, the column can be released down.
- Unscrew another bolt, after which you can do the actual lubrication.
- First, the steering wheel is turned to the left until it stops. The lubricant is poured into a 10 cc syringe, which needs to be sprayed into the hole formed. You need to throw out all 10 cubes.
- Then the steering wheel is turned to the right until it stops - the syringe is again directed into the hole, all the lubricant is sprayed out.
- After this, the steering wheel should be turned to the middle position and again sprinkled with lubricant into the hole.
- Next, the steering wheel must be turned in different directions until it stops several times. The lubrication operation is repeated again.
- Then all the components are assembled in reverse order.
The car starts and immediately stalls
You start the engine, it starts its work and literally calms down after a couple of seconds. This can baffle even an experienced driver. But don’t worry ahead of time. To quickly identify a breakdown:
- Check the condition of the ignition coil. The electrical connections may be damaged or loose.
- Make sure that the connections between the intake tract elements are completely sealed.
- Measure the pressure in the fuel rail - make sure that its value is equal to the norm.
Again, the entire engine control system may be faulty. In this case, you will have to carry out a full diagnosis. It is best to entrust this to professional craftsmen by contacting a car service.
Poor quality fuel
Spark plugs can also flood due to bad gasoline.
This is another reason why the engine does not start. Very often, condensation forms in winter and clogs the coarse filter. To avoid this, periodically add pure alcohol to the tank in winter. It smokes, sneezes, smokes like a snake Gorynych, this often happens in our time, but, as a rule, people have some remnants of conscience and they try not to reduce gasoline to a non-flammable state.
The car can even run on this kind of gasoline, the only problem is that it is absolutely not useful for the engine. To avoid this, refuel at large chain gas stations.
They, as a rule, monitor their reputation and do not allow this to happen, but if it turns out that you have filled in burnt gasoline, and even so much that the car does not want to start, you can drain the gasoline and fill in another, road gas, or if there is not much left , you can fill in more good 95 gasoline and its mixture with palenka will be more or less normal.
Of course, there are severe cases when filters and injectors become clogged and they have to be washed out for a long time and tediously (or whatever is easier to change), but this happens mainly when buying gasoline from some garage “oil workers”.
It’s quite easy to protect yourself from them - just refuel at trusted places and under no circumstances buy gasoline from any garage gas dealers. In principle, they are not such a common occurrence now, but they still occur, and people buy gasoline from them because it is cheaper, but it is better not to do this, the stingy pays twice - an immutable truth.
And if you really had to buy such a piece of water, at least filter it, there is no need to clog the filter with nozzles.
Door adjustment process
To eliminate defects in the operation of door elements, it is necessary to find out the cause of its occurrence. In some cases, treating moving parts of the mechanism with lubricants helps. The seals between the trim and the body are subject to wear and tear, and they also require replacement periodically. If manipulation of the replaced elements is not enough, technical intervention is required. Regulation is necessary for the following factors:
- the gap in the extreme part of the structure causes the door on the Kalina car to not close tightly;
- The problem is caused by a faulty door lock.
Violation of the geometry of the structure in the doorway is the most common cause of the defect. Gaps can appear in any part of the joint with the body. Most often this happens from above and below. The adjustment in these cases is similar, but has minor differences.
Adjusting the bottom of the door
First of all, it is necessary to establish access to the inside of the lock from the outside. To do this, the glass is completely lowered. The door closes with light blows on the bottom of the casing. During the process, the size of the gap in the lower part of the structure is controlled. When the correct result is achieved, the door is carefully opened and slammed shut. If necessary, repeat the procedure. It is worth monitoring the force of impact and correcting the geometry of the doorway.
This method is used at manufacturing plants at the final stage of car production. The only difference from regulation at home is the availability of technological devices and tools.
Bendix replacement
The most common cause of engine failure with a rotating starter is considered to be a broken bendix. Its cost is low, so there is no point in repairing the part. Literally speaking, Bendix is considered a consumable. Replace it by following simple instructions:
- We remove the old starter. We disconnect the negative terminal from the battery in advance and get rid of all fastening bolts and nuts using a screwdriver and wrench.
- The retractor unit also needs to be removed.
- Disconnect the traction relay from the housing. It must first be disassembled.
- We take out the starter entirely, removing the fastenings. Let's put it aside.
- We find the retaining ring and dismantle it. We remove the bendix.
Reassemble the mechanism in reverse order and start the car. If no errors were made during assembly, the car will start quickly. The main thing is to choose a new starter that is identical to the original one.
To summarize, we note that the cause of a breakdown is not always an engine malfunction. Identifying the “sore spot” is possible only with an integrated approach. If you do not have enough experience and are afraid of making things worse, then it is better not to attempt to repair your vehicle yourself.
Loose door hinges and how to fix them
Sometimes there is no need to adjust body structural elements. The problem of closing the door is caused by play in the hinges. Their role is performed by standard bolts. The hinge axes weaken due to frequent use, play occurs, the door begins to make sounds when driving, and perform vertical movements.
The defect is eliminated with a wrench. The bolts are tightened with a smooth force and, if necessary, replaced with similar fasteners of a modified design. After the hinges are aligned and the gaps disappear, the door is inserted into place, the size of the gaps on the right, left, and sides is carefully monitored.
Why Lada Kalina (8 valves) does not start: reasons and solutions
If the car does not start and the starter does not turn, the reasons may be as follows:
- Discharged battery. It is not difficult to identify this: if the voltage in the battery is less than 12 V and a cracking sound appears when you try to start the car, this means that the battery is discharged. The problem can be easily fixed; just charge or replace the battery.
- Oxidation of terminals or loose fit. If the voltage drops when you start the car, there is a problem with the terminals. It is necessary to thoroughly clean the contacts and lubricate them with special Vaseline.
- The motor is jammed. By checking the rotation of the crankshaft, you can find out whether the power unit is working properly. To fix the problem, it is enough to repair it. Provided you have the knowledge and the necessary tools, you can actually do this yourself. You can also deliver the car to a service station.
- Problems with the starter. Often in this case you need to change it.
- The problem is in the starter circuit. To solve the problem, you need to replace the traction relay.
- Starter commutator burnout. Here, only replacement of this mechanism is required.
There are times when Kalina starts immediately, but then stalls. This malfunction can be caused by:
- damaged electrical connections of the ignition coil;
- low pressure in the fuel frame;
- leaky intake tract connections;
- faulty motor control system.
In general, there are a lot of reasons; the main thing is to identify them in time and begin to eliminate them.

What does the manufacturer offer in terms of comfort: - noise insulation (excellent, no complaints so far) - electric heating of exterior mirrors - electric power steering (although the first Kalina is easier to control) - height adjustment of the front seat belts - climate system - heated front seats - electric windows of the front doors - light tinting of the windows - height-adjustable steering column - audio system (FM, USB, SD card, Bluetooth, Hands free), external antenna, 4 speakers - central locking with remote control - cabin air filter (photo on the left - mirror Kalina Cross, on the right – just Kalina)
Lada does not start when cold: reasons
The following phenomena can cause a problem:
- Slow crankshaft rotation. This may occur due to a low battery or congealed engine oil.
- If the problem is in the entire fuel system. It happens that because the water in the ramp has dried up, the entire system malfunctions.
- Injectors leaking.
- The problem is in the motor system.
- Weak compression in the cylinders.
It is not always possible to identify and eliminate these causes on your own, so you have to contact a service center.
Many car enthusiasts have encountered a problem when the Lada Kalina does not start the first time. There may be various reasons for this, which need to be known and eliminated in time. In this article, we will look at the main reasons that the car does not start the first time and methods for eliminating these faults.
ESD error on the dashboard
The on-board computer will signal a malfunction of the EUR
Owners of a Kalina car with installed electric power steering enjoy pleasant and convenient control, but run the risk of encountering a problem - the “European Power Steering Error” light comes on. The reason for this may be either a complete failure of the system or its incorrect operation. It is worth noting that the sensor glows yellow, not red. This means that you can operate the car without a working Lada Kalina electric power steering, taking certain precautions.
You will have to apply more force to the steering wheel if you turn off the EMUR completely. This can be done quite simply by removing the fuse that supplies power to the control unit. If the power steering does not work or some strange phenomena are observed in its behavior, it is better to remove the fuse and undergo a complete diagnostic of the vehicle systems, which will show the cause of the breakdown. Driving without electric power assistance can be challenging. Out of habit, the steering wheel seems too tight, but in reality it is the same as on the Kalina “standard” configuration.
There are two reasons for EMUR failure: a malfunction of the speed sensor or a breakdown in the control unit. The first problem can be solved very quickly; this can be done even in a garage. In the second case, you will have to remove the control unit and contact an experienced electrician to install a new one. If the warranty is valid, you must show the car to specialists at a car service center.
If you still want to remove and install the control unit yourself, all you need is a Phillips screwdriver. First, all plastic panels under the steering wheel are dismantled to facilitate access to the unit. And do not forget that the battery should be disconnected, this will avoid problems with the electrical wiring. The plastic cover, which is located at the bottom of the panel, is secured with three bolts. They need to be unscrewed and the cover removed.
A view of the control unit itself opens after removing the cover. All plugs must be disconnected from the EMUR control unit. The block itself is secured with two bolts. Unscrew them and carefully pull the box down so as not to damage anything. Remember that the block is still attached to the plate. The box should be slightly higher than the pedals. Only after this do you need to unscrew the three bolts that secure the control unit to the plate. Now all that remains is to screw the new control unit onto the plate and carefully install everything in the reverse order. Secure the box with two bolts, then connect all the plugs, after which you can begin assembling the facing panels.
How and why the immobilizer fails
Let's dwell on this topic in a little more detail. The thing is that the ECU controller on this model is located under the heater radiator. In second-generation models, the controller was moved.
So, if the Kalina does not start, you need to remove the side wall from the left side in the passenger seat and visually check the ECU. The block must be dry. If it is wet, then it is filled with coolant - in this case, it will not be possible to restore the ECU, only replacement will help.
First of all, when exposed to liquid, the output switch burns out. The chip can be re-soldered, but after such repairs the problems will go away for literally two months, and then they will appear again. The heater radiator will need to be replaced. If this problem exists, then experts recommend installing a new controller between the engine compartment partition and the stove.
Now about the immobilizer - in Kalina cars the manufacturer installs APS-6 immobilizers. In very rare cases, these devices fail on their own. Often, the problem is hidden in the wiring or control panel. The key fob body is held together with one self-tapping screw - the screw can be overtightened or undertightened. A crack appears on the remote device chip between the transponder contacts. In this case, if the Kalina does not start, only a spare or training key, or replacing the remote control will help.
How to tighten the electric power steering rack?
The appearance of a knocking sound in the operation of the electric power steering is associated with the need to tighten the steering rack.
How to do it right:
- First you need to disconnect the battery; to do this, disconnect the terminals from it. Unscrew the battery mount; to do this, you need to unscrew two more nuts located at the edges. After this, the battery is removed and put aside.
- Then you need to lift the plastic stand, there are four more screws under it, they can also be unscrewed.
- Having done this, it is necessary to move this stand forward until the platform is disconnected from the air filter housing retainer pad. After this, the trim can be moved back, this will provide freer access to the rail itself.
- At the next stage, you will need to crawl your hand under the rail. Directly below it, as shown in the photo, there is a rubberized cap; it will need to be removed, this will allow the key to access the adjusting nut.
- To perform adjustment work, you will need a special wrench to tighten the rack; without it, the adjustment procedure will not be possible. Using this wrench, you need to crawl under the car rail to install the tool in the required hole.
- When adjusting, be careful not to overtighten the rack. If its tightening is very strong, then when cornering the rack will bite, and this, in turn, may affect the safety of movement. The angle of adjustment is always different, it depends on how much the nut is loose, but usually when performing such work the nut is tightened by approximately 30 degrees. This should be enough to get everything right. After the adjustment is completed, it will be necessary to check that this task was performed correctly. That is, you will need to make sure that the steering wheel turns normally to any position all the way and there is no knocking. If the knock remains, then the adjustment continues.
