Since you don’t have enough speed with 4.3, then set it to 4.1.

The drive and driven gears of the gearbox are selected in pairs and if at least one of them is damaged, they are replaced as a set. The drive gear is mounted on two tapered roller bearings, and an elastic spacer sleeve is inserted between their inner rings. When the nut on the pinion shank is tightened, this bushing is deformed, providing preload to the bearings. An adjusting ring is installed between the drive gear and its bearing, which determines the axial position of the drive gear. The final drive gear is bolted to the differential housing, which is mounted on two tapered roller bearings. The preload in these bearings, as well as the amount of clearance between the teeth of the drive and driven gears, are adjusted by ring nuts screwed into split bearing beds. Inside the differential housing, two satellite gears sit freely on the axle and mesh with the semi-axial gears. Principle of operation
On a VAZ-2107, the axle gearbox operates in the same way as on all other cars with a classic drive layout. Why classic? The answer is simple: the first cars that were produced earlier had a longitudinal engine. Thus, first came the engine, then came the gearbox, driveshaft, and the final element in the chain was the rear gearbox. VAZ-2107 is built on the same principle. But the next model 2108 has a more modern front-wheel drive layout with a transversely mounted engine. It is believed that this design is safer in terms of getting the car out of a skid. But in this case, all the nodes are concentrated in one place (that is, in the engine compartment). In the case of the “seven”, all elements are placed evenly throughout the body. So, how does the VAZ-2107 gearbox work?
Oil
It is worth noting that the VAZ-2107 gearbox, or rather its operating principle, is based on the meshing of gears. Accordingly, with constant rotation there will be significant production. To increase the service life, special oil is poured inside the gearbox. It forms a thin film behind the teeth. On the “seven” you can use thick gear oil. It is perfect not only for the gearbox, but also for the rear axle. We also note that the lubricant has a certain service life. Experts recommend changing this fluid at least once every thirty thousand kilometers.
Teeth Features
Just like a gearbox, it uses a pair of gears. The VAZ-2107 steering gear is no exception. On the “seven”, the driven and driving gears are located at an angle (that is, not straight, but helical). The main feature of the pair is less load on the teeth, smooth and quiet operation. The rear axle of the “six” and other classic VAZ models is designed using the same principle.
- Cylindrical.
- Conical.
- Worm-shaped.
If we talk about the VAZ-2107 steering gear, then the operating principle here is based on a worm pair. As for the gearboxes themselves, they also include a hypoid gear. Here the gears, unlike bevel gears, do not lie in the same plane.
Gearbox device
The main structural elements of the “six” REM are:
- main couple;
- cross-axle differential.
Main couple
Structurally, the main gearbox pair is made of two gears - a drive (spike) and a driven (planet) with hypoid (spiral) tooth engagement. The use of hypoid transmission provides the following advantages:
- quiet operation;
- increased resource;
- increased clearance.
However, this design also has its own nuances. The main gears come only in pairs and are adjusted using special equipment. During this process, all gear parameters are monitored. The main pair is marked with the serial number, model and gear ratio, as well as the date of manufacture and signature of the master. Then the final drive set is formed. Only after this the spare parts go on sale. If one of the gears breaks down, the entire main pair must be replaced.
Differential
Through the differential, torque is distributed between the drive wheels of the rear axle, ensuring their rotation without slipping. When the car turns, the outer wheel receives more torque, and the inner wheel receives less. Without a differential, the torque distribution described would not be possible. The part consists of a housing, satellites and semi-axial gears. Structurally, the unit is installed on the driven gear of the main pair. The satellites connect the side gears to the differential housing.
Other details
There are other elements in REM that are an integral part of the design:
- housing - eliminates damage to the differential;
- flange - the part is fixed on the bevel gear of the main pair and is intended to connect the cardan to this gear;
- lip seal - is responsible for the tightness of the unit, preventing lubricant from leaking out;
- bearings - provide rotation of the bevel gear and differential.
Adjusting the rear gearbox of the VAZ-2107
It is possible to change the gear ratio of the mechanism only if you completely replace the main gear and install another one, with a different ratio. This modification can increase the torque of the car. The higher the gear ratio, the more traction. However, this parameter significantly affects the speed. If you increase the torque, it will be more difficult for the car to accelerate in the range of one hundred kilometers per hour or more. But from the start it will move much faster.
Higher or lower?
Often, owners of classic Zhiguli cars use replacing the main pair as one of the types of tuning their cars. Which gearbox should I put on the VAZ-2107? It is worth choosing the gear ratio based on the engine power. If you install a pair with a low ratio (for Zhiguli the maximum parameter is 3.9), it will be easier for the car to accelerate to maximum speed. But in the range of 0-100 kilometers per hour, it will lose significant time for acceleration.
Which gearbox should I choose, 2103 or 2106?
In the “nature” of Zhiguli gearboxes there are 4 types:
- VAZ 2101 - gear ratio 4.3
- VAZ 2102 - 4.4
- VAZ 2103 “troika” - 4.1
- VAZ 2106 “six” - 3.9.
The gear ratio is the ratio of the teeth, for example, in a “six” gearbox the large gear is marked 2106 1143. Therefore, to determine the pair, 43/11 = 3.9 is necessary. The larger the number of the pair, the more high-torque the car will be, but it will lose maximum speed. Most often, you can find two types of gearboxes in stores: with a pair of 4.3 and 3.9.
Please note: when replacing a faulty gearbox with a gearbox with a different gear ratio, it will be necessary, otherwise the speed readings on the speedometer will be incorrect.
- We hang up the rear axle, drain the oil from the crankcase, remove the wheels and brake drums, and remove the axle shafts. We disconnect the driveshaft from the drive gear flange and move it to the side.
- Using a “13” wrench, unscrew the eight bolts securing the gearbox housing to the rear axle beam.
- Remove the gearbox assembly.
- We install the new gearbox in the reverse order of removal. Apply sealant to the threaded part of the crankcase mounting bolts. After installation, do not forget to fill the rear axle housing with 75W-90 transmission oil. Crankcase volume is 1.3 liters.
Signs of gearbox problems
The rear gearbox is one of the reliable mechanisms of classic Zhiguli cars and breakdowns rarely occur with it. However, like any other unit, it may have its own malfunctions, which are determined by characteristic symptoms. They are worth dwelling on in more detail.
Noise when accelerating
If during acceleration there is an extraneous sound from the gearbox installation site, then it can be caused by:
- worn out or incorrectly adjusted differential bearings. It will require dismantling, disassembling and diagnosing parts with subsequent adjustment;
- Incorrect meshing of the teeth of the main pair gears. Eliminated by proper adjustment;
- lack of lubrication in the gearbox. The lack of oil in the crankcase is restored, after which it is checked for leaks at the places where the sealing elements are installed.
Axle bearings are not a structural element of the gearbox, but if the part fails, then an extraneous sound may also be observed during acceleration.
Noise when accelerating and braking the engine
If noise occurs both during acceleration and during braking by the power unit, there may not be many reasons:
- deterioration or failure of the bevel gear bearings of the main pair. Eliminated by replacing failed elements;
- Incorrect adjustment of the gap between the tip and the planetary gear. The mechanism needs to be diagnosed and replaced with damaged parts, as well as setting the required gap between the gear teeth.
How much does a new gearbox and replacement labor cost?
The cost of the work, as always, depends on where you decide to have the repairs done. If it’s a garage-type service, then Uncle Vasya will ask you for about 1,000 rubles to replace the gearbox, but in a “sophisticated” car service center, be prepared to part with an amount of 2 to 3 thousand.

Using a gearbox, torque is transmitted from the engine to the wheels. The gearbox is a set of gears and includes two main blocks: a cross-axle differential and a main gear. Gearbox repair

Removing the gearbox
We remove the gearbox as follows:
- We install the car on the inspection hole, placing shoes under the front wheels.
- Place a suitable container under the drain hole, unscrew the plug and drain the oil.
Replacing the cuff
The RZM lip seal is changed using the following tools:
- head 24;
- knob;
- hammer;
- flat screwdriver.
To replace the oil seal, you need to remove the cardan from the gearbox side and drain the oil, then perform the following sequence of actions:
- Insert bolts into the two nearest holes in the flange and screw nuts onto them.

Disassembling the gearbox
To disassemble the assembly in question, you will need the following tools:
- set of wrenches;
- hammer;
- bearing puller.
For ease of work, the gearbox must be installed on a workbench. Disassembly is carried out in the following sequence:
- We unscrew the bolt that secures the locking element of the left bearing.
Disassembling the differential
After the gearbox is disassembled, we proceed to removing parts from the differential box:
- Use a puller to pull the inner race of the bearing off the box.
Defective parts
To understand the condition of the gearbox and its constituent elements, first rinse them in diesel fuel and let it drain. Diagnostics involves a visual inspection and is performed in the following order:
- We inspect the condition of the gear teeth of the main pair. If the gears have severe wear, chipped teeth (at least one), the main pair needs to be replaced.
Assembly and adjustment of the gearbox
The process of assembling rare earth metals involves not only installing all the elements in their places, but also adjusting them along the way. The performance and service life of the unit directly depends on the correctness of actions. The procedure is performed in the following order:
- We place the differential bearings on the box using an adapter, and then attach the planetary gear.
- The semi-axial gears, together with the support washers and satellites, are treated with transmission grease and mounted in the differential box.
- We rotate the installed gears so that the satellite axis can be inserted.
- We measure the clearance of each gear along the axis: it should not exceed 0.1 mm. If it is larger, then we install thicker washers. The gears must rotate by hand, and the moment of resistance to rotation must be 1.5 kgf*m. If it is impossible to remove the gap even with thick washers, the gears must be replaced.
What is the difference between the VAZ 2103 gearbox and 2106?
The main difference is the different gear ratio:
The gear ratio shows how many times the wheel will turn relative to the number of revolutions of the cardan. The difference between the VAZ 2103 gearbox and the 2106 can be clearly seen by the number of teeth on the gears. The “six” has 11 teeth on the drive gear, and 43 teeth on the driven gear, while the “three” has 10 and 41, respectively. To verify this, it is not necessary to disassemble the gearbox, just look at its markings.
Many motorists believe that a gearbox with a higher gear ratio is considered traction, and one with a low gear is considered high-speed, and they try to replace one type of gearbox with another, adjusting the car to the desired parameters. But to fully modernize a car, it is not enough just to know how the VAZ 2103 gearbox differs from the 2106.
Features of using gearboxes on all-wheel drive vehicles
For all-wheel drive vehicles, the front and rear axle ratios must be the same.
In everyday practice of car maintenance, quite often there are cases of installing gearboxes with different gear ratios on an all-wheel drive vehicle (Niva, Taiga). Most often this happens due to the lack of appropriate knowledge among those people who repair the car. These can be both car owners who repair the car themselves, and unskilled car service workers who provide services to the population to replace units.
When installing a gearbox with a gear ratio different from the required one on an all-wheel drive vehicle, the owner will not notice any disturbances in the operation of the transmission.
