Yes, a headache for owners of sixteen-valve “ten” cars is hydraulic valve clearance compensators. They often fail during the warranty period (100 thousand km). Sometimes the defect is in the part itself, sometimes low-quality oil is to blame. In any case, this engine requires good service.

Principle of operation

The principle of operation is this: you turn the key in the lock, and current flows to the excitation wire. The magnetic field that the armature creates penetrates the stator windings, at the terminals of which voltage appears. When the armature reaches a sufficiently high rotation speed, which is provided by the pulley and belt drive, the so-called self-excitation mode occurs.

The rectifier unit converts alternating current into direct current. The voltage regulator starts working when the crankshaft speed changes (accordingly, the armature rotates faster or slower) and regulates the time for which the field wire is turned on. Sometimes a generator malfunction may occur due to a blown fuse in the circuit.

Functions performed

So, what is a generator for? First of all, in order to provide all VAZ 2110 equipment that runs on electricity with energy. Perhaps someone thinks that this is the battery's task. Not really, because the battery is needed to maintain functionality when the engine is not running (it starts the engine, supports the alarm, music system while parked, etc.).

But when the engine has already started, with the help of the battery, the generator comes into play. During the trip, it is he who supports the operation of all electronics, air conditioning, audio (or even video systems), and everything else that you have added to your VAZ 2110.

Another equally important function of the generator is charging the battery. This also happens when the engine is running. And if it weren’t for this device, the battery would not be able to cope with its tasks, and it would have to be charged all the time.

Considering that today on the VAZ 2110, in addition to the standard layout, many additional energy consumers are installed, it happens that the generator voltage is not enough. In this case, it makes sense to install a 120 amp generator.

Specifications

Most often, the VAZ 2110 is equipped with a Katek generator, usually designated by the numbers 5102.3771, but it can also be 94.3701. Both generators have a power of 80 amperes, and the output voltage is about 14V. But recently Katek has been releasing a new type of generator, also suitable for the VAZ 2110.

It produces a current of up to 120 amperes, and is more suitable for the high energy loads of a modern car. By installing a 120-amp generator, you can ensure simultaneous uninterrupted operation of almost all electricity consumers.

  • The housing is most often made of lightweight non-magnetic aluminum alloy; it consists of two covers, secured with a bolt. The front cover is located in the same place as the drive pulley; the back cover is on the side where the slip rings are. Each bolt that connects the back and front covers is tightened. In the future, to disassemble the generator on a VAZ 2110, it is enough to remove the bolt mounts;
  • Mounting the generator on a VAZ 2110. There is an upper mounting bracket that uses 2 bolts. The lower mounting bracket most often has one bolt, but there may be two, in which case minor modifications may be necessary. The bolt can be anything, the main thing is that the size is suitable, sometimes a sleeve is required for this. It is better not to redo the bracket itself. The bracket securely holds the generator, which has many responsibilities. And yet, we should not forget that the bracket, like the bolt, can break, so you need to monitor its condition;
  • The structure of the brush assembly consists of two graphite brushes, springs that press them, and a brush holder;
  • In modern Katek generators, the voltage wire and brush holder are located together in a non-separable unit. Therefore, if the voltage regulator fails, the entire assembly must be replaced. Structurally, this regulator can have a hybrid device - when radio elements with electronic devices are in the same circuit. But an integral is when the regulator is made in thin-film microelectronics technology. Many believe that the integral regulator copes better with its mission - controlling the duration and frequency of current pulses. The regulator changes the voltage used to charge the battery. At higher temperatures, less voltage goes to the battery. Although, in principle, it is not so important whether the integral is responsible for this regulation, or the hybrid;
  • A rectifier unit with six diodes is responsible for converting the alternating current generated by the armature and stator into direct current, directly used by all on-board equipment. It also serves to charge the battery;
  • The device is driven by a belt drive. It provides a significant increase in the speed at which the crankshaft rotates. In this case, the V-belt wears out faster if the pulley has a small diameter. If the driven pulley is small, it is better suited to a serpentine drive, which is more often used in modern generators.

Here, in brief, is the basic structure of generators, regardless of whether they produce 80 or 120 amperes.

What to choose?

In terms of popularity and reliability, the first places are occupied by manufacturers Bosch (Bosch), Denso (Denso) and Delphi (Delphi). But you should know that Katek (KZATE) (made by us) are also quite reliable and do a good job of their duties on the VAZ 2110, creating the required voltage. Maybe somewhere they lose against Bosch, but compared to the Chinese they are at their best.

If the generator is seriously damaged, it does not have to be repaired, but completely replaced. Parts necessary for repair may be missing, or the breakdown may not be repairable at all. Meanwhile, the on-board voltage and the quality of battery charging depend on the good operation of the power unit. It's a shame when, despite a good motor, electrical equipment does not work properly.

And if we are talking about VAZ cars, then sometimes a replacement is in demand due to the lack of power of standard devices. Modern automakers offer many additional devices that increase the level of comfort when traveling, but they also consume a large amount of electricity, and old devices cannot cope, so they have to be replaced with more powerful ones.

Generators for VAZ 2106 and 2107

The generator on the VAZ 2106-2107 costs the same as on the VAZ 2101 - G221. If you install additional external current consumers that operate constantly, this will lead to undercharging and insufficient current will be supplied from the relay regulator. These additional devices include:

  • powerful audio systems;
  • fog lights;
  • TV;
  • preheater;
  • additional heater;
  • fridge.

Any similar device will lead to greater power consumption and, consequently, to premature battery discharge, even when the engine is running at high speeds. Standard devices for 2106 were developed a long time ago and are not designed for modern energy-consuming add-ons.

In this case, it is recommended to replace the standard generator with a more powerful unit.

What to install?

G 222

If you need to increase the current power, then, when deciding which generator is better to install on the VAZ 2106 or 2107, instead of the standard one, take the G 222, which was installed on the VAZ 2105, Nivakh. It would seem that it itself is no better than the standard one on the “six”, but you can take an upgraded version that will be more powerful. Unlike the 221, this unit is designed with a built-in regulator relay, assembled into one unit with brushes. The G 221 gives an output of 42 A, and the 222nd - 50 A. Increasing the cross-section on the rotor winding increases the power, although the design is completely similar to the G 221. However, to install it on the 2106 you will need minor modifications. The easiest way is to install brushes from G 221. They fit perfectly in place of the relay. This modification is quite feasible even for car enthusiasts who do not have the skill.

It can be installed on a VAZ 2106 G222 with a standard regulator, but then it is necessary to change the connection diagram of the electrical machine.

On 2107 everything is installed without problems.

Check the voltage at medium engine speeds at the battery terminals, if it is 14 V at 2500 rpm, then everything is fine. You can drive with a more powerful unit by connecting additional options.

2. Generator 2108

This installation has greater efficiency, delivering a current of 55 A. It is installed on both 2106 and 2107.

The mount is identical to the standard ones, there are no problems during installation. Just remember to remove the battery terminal. You'll have to tinker with the connection to 2106. There are 4 wires going to the standard device. On the “eight” - three, since the voltage relay is built-in. To get a good result, insulate the black wire, connect the rest according to the standard system. The light bulb - the discharge indicator will light up when the generator is running, and will go out if there is no charging.

It is useful to make some more minor modifications. Instead of the old relay, install a regular power one. Then the light comes on only when the engine starts and at low speeds.

On 2107 you only need to add a power relay.

2107-3701010

An even more powerful installation is from the VAZ 2107i, producing 80 A, which can also be installed on the VAZ 2106–2107. With such equipment it is possible to install any electrical systems. For VAZ 2106 only 2107-3701010 is suitable; You can use any generator of this series for the carburetor “seven”.

When installing this equipment on 2106, it is better to modify it: replace the relay regulator with a similar one from G 222.

Basic faults

Failures associated with the failure of the Granta generator lead to discharge or, conversely, overcharging of the battery and its boiling. In both cases, this will make further operation of the car impossible. If the belt is overtightened, problems with high bearing wear will soon arise. If the belt tension is insufficient, slipping will occur and the battery will receive too little charge.

Normally, a working generator produces 14.5 V; exceeding this value is most often due to a breakdown of the voltage regulator. Without urgent replacement of the element, constant recharging of the battery will lead to shedding of lead plates and battery malfunction. If the unit does not produce the required voltage, and it is below 13 V, then the problem may not only be with the regulator, but also with the fact that the brushes are worn out, the diode bridge or windings are damaged.

It happens that suspicious sounds occur during operation, in which case the nature of the noise is important. It’s not difficult to deal with this: just remove the wires from the generator. If the rotation of the pulley is accompanied by a howling or squealing noise, then the problem is in the bearings. If, after removing the wires, the noise disappears, then it is in the diode bridge, or a short circuit has occurred in the winding. In any case, repairs are inevitable, and sometimes only replacing the unit will help.

The Priora requires a powerful generator; the car has a lot of electronics and a weak installation cannot cope with it.

A generator labeled 5102.3771 is recommended for the Priora, providing a power of 80 A; on luxury versions with even more electronics, a 115 A device is installed. Then which generator is better to install on the Priora?

Replacing a generator on a car with a 16-valve engine

Dismantling and subsequent installation of the device on Grant modifications with a 16-valve power unit have their own characteristics: there is a belt tensioner. As in the previous case, you will need a standard set of tools, and before starting work, the negative terminal of the battery is disconnected.   1. Disconnect the wiring harness from the generator.
  2. Remove the cap covering the power wire.
  3. Using a “10” wrench, unscrew the nut that holds the wire tip.
  4. Use a key set to “13” to loosen the tension bar nut.
  5. Loosen the belt by unscrewing the adjusting bolt to the left.
  6. Move the generator to the right and remove the belt.
  7. Unscrew the adjustment bolt completely and remove it.
  8. Remove the tension bar.
  9. Unscrew the fastening nut from below.
  10. Remove the bushing and remove the bolt holding the lower mount.
  11. Remove the generator.

Removal and Installation Guide

Dismantling and installing a new device at home is not so difficult.

The connection diagram for the generator and the connection of all components is as follows:

  1. First you need to turn off the power to the car's on-board network; to do this, open the hood and disconnect the battery.
  2. Next, locate the generator assembly in the engine compartment and disconnect the excitation cable from it.
  3. Using a 10mm wrench, you need to unscrew the nut that secures the two wires to the “B+” terminal. Once the nut is unscrewed, the wires can be disconnected.
  4. Next, you need to remove the strap. If its condition is deplorable, then the belt needs to be changed to prevent it from breaking at the most inopportune moment. The strap should be replaced if it shows signs of damage, such as cracks or other signs of wear. Unscrew the mechanism adjusting screw, after which you can unscrew the fixing nut.
  5. After these steps, you can remove the tension bar of the assembly.
  6. Using a 13 mm wrench, you can unscrew the nut that secures the lower fastening of the unit.
  7. Remove the screw and remove the device from the car. Further installation of the new unit is carried out in the reverse order.

  • article in the catalog – 1118-1041020-07;
  • length (size) – 823 mm;
  • marking on the package – 6РК 823.

To work you will need a minimum set of tools:

  • stationery knife;
  • screwdriver or long mounting blade;
  • key to "13".

Replacement is carried out as follows:

  1. Remove the old belt. To do this, it is most convenient to cut it with a knife.
  2. Unscrew the lower mounting bolt of the unit two or three turns using a “13” key.
  3. Unscrew the nut and remove the mounting bolt from above.
  4. Now, being careful, you need to try to rotate the generator so that the eye on top can go beyond the protrusion of the bracket. The generator should be pressed against it and secured with available materials. An ordinary wire will do, with which it is tied to the cylinder head cover nut.
  5. Place the belt on the pulleys first.
  6. Turn on the fifth speed, at the same time press the belt against the pulley (outside help is needed). The car should be pushed again so that the belt is in its place.
  7. Remove the wire and, armed with a screwdriver, press the generator at the point of contact with the bracket, and then screw the bolt into the upper mount.

Next, all that remains is to tighten the nut and tighten the lower fastening. This concludes the procedure.
