It's decided! How to Activate the Immobilizer on the Lada Granta?

Systems with direct control of immobilizer functions by the vehicle driver

Making a car lift for a garage with your own hands

The direct participation of a person in protecting a car from opening security systems is by no means the craziest idea. The more automated the control of a car's immobilizer is, the higher the chances of it being hacked using all kinds of scanning equipment.

The most exotic version is the immobilizer, which has a built-in special sensor that can scan and recognize the driver’s fingerprint. The method is quite spectacular and can ensure high reliability of the immobilizer while complying with safety rules and not leaving fingerprints in places accessible to the criminal. Which is not always possible.

Therefore, in some expensive car models, conventional push-button dials are installed, in which the immobilizer function is duplicated by a digital code entered manually by the driver. In this case, there is no need to look for what the immobilizer looks like. But manually selecting a number sequence is very difficult and requires a huge amount of time. In this case, the code in the microcircuit can change each subsequent time the engine is started or parked for a long time with the engine running.

Another type of human participation in implementing the functions of protecting a car from unauthorized intrusion is the use of special wearable or personal keys with a chip. A transponder card or chip can be inserted into a plastic card or wristwatch, or any item of personal belongings, without drawing attention to its existence. The immobilizer control board can control the presence of the key and its contents in the car remotely.

This method has appeared as a response to the well-known method of car theft in the criminal world called “parachute”. Criminals choose the moment when the owner of the car stops for ten seconds after starting to move, for example, at a traffic light or a pedestrian crossing. Next comes a sudden attack on the driver and throwing him out of the car with the engine running. If the device system is working properly, it is impossible to steal a car unless the victim of the attack voluntarily reports or hands over the key, because criminals do not know what the immobilizer transponder looks like and where it is located.

This is how most stolen BMW X5 models were stolen in the Russian Federation. The control key to the car was taken away under the threat of violence, so the immobilizer system itself cannot guarantee successful counteraction to intruders.

Types of immobilizers and connection diagram

New car models are already produced with standard immobilizers, and it is not advisable to interfere with their design and configuration (except for those cases when the owner intends to install a more “advanced” device). But even owners of fairly old cars can install “immobilizers” so as not to find their car at the nearest disassembly. Oddly enough, the greatest demand among car thieves is not for cool business-class cars, but for quite ordinary “average” cars, the spare parts of which are in huge demand.

Modern devices are available in four types: contact, contactless, mobile and delayed action.

  1. The contact type of immobilizer is a fairly simple type of device in which unlocking must be carried out by contacting the key with the receiving device. Finding such a receiver is not difficult for a professional, especially if the alarm is not installed or has already been disabled.
  2. The contactless type is a more advanced system in which the signal from the transmitter in the driver’s hands goes to the receiver-antenna. The receiver can be located anywhere in the cabin, and is often quite difficult to find.
  3. Modern problems require modern solutions - mobile immobilizers. Such a device is controlled from a smartphone via a mobile application, and the signal is received via the cellular network. You no longer need to be close to the car; you can control it from any distance.
  4. A delayed-action immobilizer is a kind of “surprise” for a car thief. The control unit does not operate immediately, but after a certain time after starting the engine. Instead of quietly “working magic” on the car in a cozy dark yard, the thief finds himself on the highway under the gun of video cameras. There is a greater chance that he will abandon the car without “gutting” it and go home.

Advice for motorists

  1. Any protection system is always better than none. Therefore, if it is possible to install an immobilizer, it is better not to delay its installation.
  2. Car thieves have long learned to deal with alarm systems, and are gradually finding methods to neutralize the immobilizer. Yes, it's difficult, but it's possible. Owners of simple standard systems, in which all elements are located in predetermined places, suffer especially often.
  3. The conclusion from the previous paragraph is this: the more complex the immobilizer, the greater the chance that it will actually protect the car. At the very least, it will not be easy to deal with him, and there is every chance that the criminal will give up this idea and switch to a “more compliant” car.
  4. A delayed-action immobilizer gives a greater chance of preserving the car, since it is triggered unexpectedly and at the moment when the thief has already entered a busy street.
  5. A certain guarantee that the immobilizer will work for a long time and without failures is provided by the quality of the device itself (here it is better not to skimp on brands) and the direct hands of the master who installs it. Therefore, it is more advisable to contact specialized service centers, where they provide a guarantee for high-quality work. The service life of the device as a whole depends on how the wires are laid and the relays are connected.
  6. During installation, you can find out in advance how to safely disconnect the battery from the general network, what to do in case of failures, which crawler to install and whether it is needed at all. There’s no shame in asking questions to the mechanic; it’s bad to then stand over a “dead” car and figure out how much a tow truck will cost.

Conclusion

An electronic immobilizer is one of the most reliable and advanced security systems present in almost every car. Every driver who has this mechanism installed and working properly can sleep peacefully, because without a specific key, it is almost impossible to start the car. If you don’t have this mechanism, be sure to take care of correcting this defect, and everyone will decide for themselves to install it themselves or turn to professionals for help. The main thing to remember is that registering a key for an immobilizer is a rather complicated matter, requiring certain knowledge, and after installation, you need to make sure that all wires are carefully hidden.

Reasons why the standard immobilizer is not activated

  1. Just lazy.
  2. Some people demand money for it and don’t want to do it for free.
  3. Other dealers do not want to activate it, because then, when installing an alarm system with auto start, they will have to perform the “immobilizer bypass” procedure, which brings additional difficulties.
  4. Some argue that this operation may cause problems with starting the car. A strong argument here is that dealers claim that after activating the immobilizer, the Lada Granta can stall at any time. Then we can suggest not to lock the doors yet, they may not open at any time.

Please note that in the list of pre-sale work there is an item on the basis of which the car's immobilizer must be activated, regardless of what engine (more about engines here) and what equipment.

Advantages and disadvantages of immobilizers

obvious advantages .

  • It is not visible, not heard and does not manifest itself until the moment they try to steal the car.
  • The thief never knows in advance whether the car has an immobilization system or not.
  • Even if the thief is one hundred percent sure that there is an immobilizer, it will be quite difficult for him to find and deactivate all its elements. Especially in a hurry.

An experienced thief can deceive the simplest immobilizer models, since both the placement and operating modes of the electronic elements in them are always the same. But more complex options are practically impossible to bypass.

This device also has disadvantages

  • Possibility of hacking simple standard devices.
  • Dependence on battery charge (you can no longer take the battery home to recharge).
  • “Glitches” in the control system associated with power surges or interference in the on-board electrical network.
  • Risk of losing the control key or damaging the chip.

Purpose

The StarLine BP-03 module is designed to automatically disable the standard RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) system when starting the engine remotely.

The RFID system is used on most modern cars. A transponder is built into the car's standard ignition key, the code of which is interrogated when the engine is started with the key. If the engine is started remotely or automatically, this system will not allow the engine to start. The VR-03 module is designed to solve this problem, automatically transmitting the standard transponder code during remote engine start.

To operate the BP-03 module, a spare key with a transponder is required, which can be ordered from the supplier of cars of this brand.

How to use

To configure the immobilizer, you must use one of two programming methods:

  • Configuration via computer in special applications.
  • Setting via a button located on the block or in the wiring harness.

When choosing the first option, you need to connect the device’s control unit to the computer, open the official application, wait until the system finds the immobilizer model, enter the service code and set the required operating parameters.

What is an immobilizer

The fact that you understood this security system from the previous paragraph, however, the operating principle of this device is fundamentally different from the usual howling alarms and other things. The immobilizer works completely differently, and it’s all about the key, which is given to you by the manufacturer of the car you bought and the smart unit under the dashboard.

This whole thing works quite simply and complicated at the same time. The block located under the dashboard reads the information, a special code with which your key is equipped. If you insert any other key into the ignition, the smart electronics will work in such a way that any of the car’s systems will be blocked.

The degree and location of blocking depend directly on the immobilizer itself, it can be:

  • Steering wheel lock;
  • Gearboxes;
  • Pedals;
  • Engine and ignition system block.
  • Fuel supply.

The first three points in the above list relate mainly to immobilizers of the previous generation - mechanical. The last two are increasingly common nowadays; they take place in electronic immobilizers, which allow you to register the key with particular precision and configure the locking mechanism more cunningly. We will talk specifically about the electronic type of device, since it is more advanced and is becoming increasingly popular.

Price issue

Below is a table with models and prices for common immobilizer models. Prices are relevant for Moscow. In other cities of the Russian Federation the price may differ.

When installing additional relays and control units, the installation cost increases by 3600-5100 rubles. Immobilizers under the Prizrak brand are not supplied for retail sale, but are sold only together with the installation service in specialized centers.

Why does the immobilizer not see the car key?

Understanding the principle of its operation will help you understand why the immobilizer does not see the key. A working security system unit makes contact with the key, reads the unique code and compares it with the one stored in memory. When it is not possible to read the code or it does not correspond to what is written in the block, the immobilizer blocks the engine from starting.

The main reasons why the immobilizer does not see the original key, and ways to solve them, are collected in the table.

If the immobilizer does not see the key well, the reasons are most often poor contact, mechanical damage to the block or chip, or low supply voltage. You need to pay attention to the problems listed above when your car displays an immobilizer error after an accident.

In some cars, after an accident, the safety system may block the fuel pump. In this case, the protection must be deactivated. The method is different for each model, for example, on a Ford Focus you need to press the button to turn on the fuel pump in the niche near the driver’s left foot.

Software disabling the immobilizer from the ECU

Situations where the immobilizer does not always see the key due to the firmware are rare. Usually, if software fails, it fails irrevocably. The malfunction can be resolved by rebinding the key or software disabling the immobilizer.

Owners of Ford, Toyota, Lexus, Mitsubishi, SsangYong, Haval and many others equipped with a non-standard alarm with auto start in the presence of a lineman may encounter cases when, when cold weather sets in, the immobilizer does not see the key. Therefore, you need to start troubleshooting in the bypass block. If the tag is equipped with its own battery, you need to check its charge level, as it quickly drops in the cold.

Most keys for cars with an immobilizer are passive: they do not have batteries, and the power is supplied by induction from a coil installed in the area of the car lock.

To avoid problems with the immobilizer, it is recommended to take the following precautions:

  • do not disassemble the key, immobilizer and ECU;
  • do not throw the keys, do not get them wet or expose them to electromagnetic waves;
  • use high-quality bypass units when installing non-standard alarm systems with auto-start;
  • when buying a used car, ask the owner for all the keys, a piece of paper with the immobilizer code written down for flashing new ones, and also clarify information about the features of the installed alarm (its model, availability of immo bypass, location of the service button, etc.).

When purchasing a used car with only one main key, it is not possible to link new chips to the unit. Only replacing the immobilizer or ECU will help. The costs of these procedures can reach tens of thousands of rubles!

We install the immobilizer with our own hands, the work progresses step by step

Electrical circuits that are responsible for the functions of the most important components of the vehicle must be connected to the immobilizer lock. To install the immobilizer correctly, you must not create cable breaks in sight, otherwise thieves can determine the installation location of the device and can easily remove it. The fuel pump and ignition relay, as well as the wires that lead to the starter, should be connected to the control contacts and routed through a central bundle of cables, branches from which can only be created inside the front panel. When you install an immobilizer, wire connections must be made using special terminal blocks. When using twists, you significantly increase the risk that a short circuit will occur, followed by a fire in the car.

How to disable the Lada Granta immobilizer

If the car has an alarm in addition to basic security, a conflict may arise between the anti-theft systems. In this case, you need to deactivate the immobilizer in the car.

To bypass this function on the Lada Granta, you need to create your own secret code. It will help unlock the engine if the key or other system components malfunction. It is important to remember that in order to carry out the shutdown procedure yourself, the code must be written immediately after activating the protection. To do this you need:

  • tightly close all doors in the cabin, including the hood and trunk;
  • insert the training key into the ignition, start and stop the engine;
  • rapid flashing of the diode indicates the start of the procedure;
  • in 6 seconds you need to remove the training key and insert a valid key, activate the ignition;
  • a three-time beep will confirm the correctness of the action;
  • wait for 2 more signals and turn off the engine;
  • within 6 seconds the working key is removed, the training key is placed again and the engine is started;
  • wait for 3 and then 2 more signals;
  • turn off the engine and wait for 1 more signal (after this the LED should blink even faster);
  • the ignition is reactivated with the red key, the Check Engine light should go out within 1 minute;
  • then enter a six-digit password by pressing the accelerator pedal as many times as there should be in the code number;
  • between the numbers, the pedal is held for at least 5 seconds until the CE light goes out;
  • After recording all the numbers, the ignition is turned off.

To enter the code, the engine is started, nothing is pressed until the CE lamp stops lighting. The code is then entered by pressing the accelerator pedal as described above.

In this way, the immobilizer on the Grant is turned off until the next engine start. If more than 5 seconds have passed between turning off the engine and starting again, you will have to repeat the code entry.

  • The immobilizer has blocked the engine from starting, what should I do?
  • Immobilizer bypass
  • Installation of Lada Granta radio
  • Immobilizer Needle

Where is it located and how to activate it

Lada Granta cars are delivered to showrooms with the immobilizer function deactivated. Salon specialists perform activation at the time of sale, in the presence of the client. Sometimes salon employees forget to do this, or the buyer himself refuses to connect the protection. The vehicle owner needs to know where the immobilizer is located and how to make it active.

The brain of the anti-theft system is located directly in the ignition unit, which allows you to read the owner’s special code from the key. To activate the immobilizer, you need to perform the following sequence of actions:

  • close the hood, trunk and all doors in the car;
  • insert the training key (with a red mark) into the ignition and turn it until the ignition is activated;
  • wait 6 seconds until the light on the instrument panel starts flashing;
  • within 6 seconds, remove the training key and insert the working key, start the engine with it.

If everything is done correctly and on time, then this will be followed by 3 signals, and then 2 more. If there is no sound, the operation should be repeated again.

Connection

The red wire is the power plus, connect to a circuit that contains +12V voltage when the ignition is on.

Black wire - negative control input (70mA). When a negative potential is applied to this input, the code of the standard transponder key is read. Connect the black wire to the remote start system output that provides chassis potential while the engine is running.

Gray wires - depending on the configuration, connect to the external loop antenna installed around the ignition switch, or wind the antenna from several turns of wire over the standard RFID antenna.
