VAZ 2131 trunk dimensions with seats folded

Even not very long and not particularly long trips showed that it is, in principle, possible to sleep in my Niva, unfolding the rear sofa, emptying the contents of the trunk, and placing all sorts of “soft crap” on the floor. But the procedure of rearranging things, especially when it is repeated many times (and it is repeated at least twice), is annoying, to put it mildly. It’s quite easy for me to get an overnight stay on my own, but when there are three of us (me, my wife and a child), things become more complicated. In the summer, our algorithm for preparing for an overnight stay looked like this: - we take out all the contents of the luggage compartment and the rear of the cabin from the car; - we fold out the rear sofa, dismantle sofa cushion; - lay rugs and blankets on the floor; - fully unfold the driver's seat; - partially return things to the cabin (in free spaces), partially hide them under the car; - my wife and child sleep in the back, I sleep on the unfolded driver's seat. Preparing for departure means doing everything listed in reverse order.

I decided to make a so-called “sleeping bag”. It seems to me that the term “folding bed” is more suitable here, but this is not important. The very solution of a “telescopic”, sliding frame structure has already been implemented many times on “large cars” (Landcruisers, Patrols, Patriots, etc.). I have not seen such designs for the Niva (perhaps I was looking poorly). There were some options, but I didn’t really like them.

Characteristics of my sleeping “system”: 1). Main materials: square pipe 20x1.5; sq. pipe 25x1.5; plywood-8mm; foamed polyethylene -20 mm; "tarpaulin-like" fabric.2). Total weight: 21.5 kg.3). Total length of the berth: 184 cm. 4). Sleeping width: from 110 to 140 cm.

A worthy model among Russian off-road passenger cars is the Chevrolet Niva. However, it does not have a number of disadvantages. For example, there is an established opinion among drivers that the Chevrolet Niva has practically no trunk. Let's figure out whether this is a lie or a real disadvantage of the domestic SUV.

Chevrolet Niva is a small-sized five-door crossover that is suitable for driving in the city and off-road. On the market since 2002, restyling took place only once. It differs from other Chevrolet models assembled in Russia in that 90% of all components are domestically produced. A remarkable fact: in 2009, this model received the award, awarded annually by the best auto magazines, “SUV of the Year 2009” in the “Premiere of the Year” and “SUV” categories.

How to properly weld a trunk frame

The operation will take approximately 20 hours to complete. The frame pipes are welded together to form the bottom. When working with aluminum, argon welding is used. In the same way, the sides are welded, which can, if necessary, be made from metal sheets.

It is advisable to lay a reinforcing mesh or small diameter tubes at the bottom, which will serve as stiffeners. Usually three jumpers are enough, but it is better to make five. The exact quantity can be determined already at the assembly stage. The recommended distance between jumpers is 15 centimeters. The remaining tubes are welded longitudinally to further strengthen the structure.

Some drivers complain of rattling noises when traveling with an expedition rack. To avoid this effect, the mesh is welded in all places where it comes into contact with the metal crossbars. The crossbars are located at a large distance from each other. Therefore, it is necessary to weld sections of the profile in the openings between them. You can use bolts instead of welding, but this fastening is less reliable and the operation takes more time.

The arcs must be made from rolled metal with a round cross-section. They improve the aerodynamic properties of the vehicle. To attach the structure to the car, you can take ordinary corners with holes for bolts. They will be welded to the frame from below, so if necessary, you can remove the trunk at any time. To prevent scratches from forming on the roof rails when they come into contact with metal, rubber gaskets should be glued to the fastenings.

The top frame should have right angles at the front. At the back you need to make edges that will be located along the edges. It is necessary to weld 12 profile sections of arbitrary size to the frame. The height of the future trunk depends on their size. Usually they make a height of 190 millimeters. It is necessary to secure six segments in the corners, and the rest will connect them in pairs.

An upper frame is welded on top of the vertically located profile elements. The next step is the installation and welding of the diagonal element. This part is optional, but can be used to install a branch guard when traveling into the woods. If necessary, you can make fastenings for additional elements:

  • Fasteners for spare tire.
  • Additional lighting, spotlights.
  • Hooks on which the cable will be held.
  • Polymer boxes for equipment, such as tents.
  • Various types of attachments for tools, such as shovels.
  • A ladder that simplifies access to things lying on the trunk.

Making fasteners for a spare wheel is easy. To do this, you first need to choose a place where the spare tire will lie. At this point you need to weld the nut. Next, the stud is screwed into this nut, but not welded. Now the wheel can be put on the stud and secured with another nut. If you plan to attach headlights, they will require waterproof wires.

Any additional elements can be added later, after the basket has been installed. It is also not necessary to make the hooks or ladder yourself. Often they buy ready-made parts and attach them to a homemade trunk

But after welding the frame, it is important to sand all the seams and try on the structure to make sure it fits

Manufacturing

The goal is to weld a trunk that would be attached to the usual “ant” trunk bars, be removable, and, most importantly, weight and strength. Through cunning (I wanted to write “simple” - but this is not true) strength calculations, a certain design was developed, which theoretically (haven’t tested it yet) should hold about 200 kg of concentrated load (a person weighing 200 kg standing at any point in the trunk), and so much more if you spread all the weight over the entire area. The experience of my teammates (niva4x4.ru) shows that the roof pillars of the car are strong, people carried 300-400 kg of building materials without any consequences, i.e. I’m calm about the body...

The size of the base along the outer contour is 110 cm x 140 cm, professional pipe 20 mm x 20 mm with a wall thickness of 2 mm was used.

The only thing worth paying attention to is the angles. The pipe is hollow and must be cooked so that the ends do not remain open, otherwise you will get a wonderful whistle.

The easiest and fastest way to avoid open ends is to cut the pipes at 45 degrees and then butt weld. I went a different route because I don’t like cutting at an angle (I’m always off by a degree or even two), so I joined the corners as shown in the picture below:

I welded with electrodes with a diameter of 2.5 mm for carbon steels with a current of 70 A (inverter apparatus).

The first step, naturally, was to weld the base platform:

Stage No. 2 - welded the sides - the height of the trunk is 15 cm due to the height of the door in my garage...

Stage No. 3 - internal frame. In this position, as in the photo, the trunk passed the first test - I stood in the middle (I weigh 80 kg) and jumped with all my heart - everything was holding together, nothing was bent. True, I didn’t wait until the seams cooled down, and as a result, the sole of the slippers slightly melted...

Stage No. 4 – welding the platform for the chandelier and fitting. In total, the overall dimensions of the trunk are 110 cm x 160 cm x 15 cm. The size of the platform for the chandelier is 20 cm by 110 cm. It is planned to install four headlights: on the sides there is a working light, and closer to the middle there is a high beam. The side lights will have the ability to rotate 90 degrees to illuminate the harsh night environment to the left and right of the car.

Stage No. 5 - welding the reinforcing mesh and painting (I used “primer-enamel” for rust, the toad choked me to spend money on Hammerite). According to the manufacturer's recommendation, I applied two layers (I didn't have enough patience for the third).

There is also a tricky point about welding the mesh - at first I tried to melt the mesh rod itself. Bad idea - it burns out instantly. Then I got the hang of it - I melted a professional pipe, next to the rod and slowly pushed a roll of metal onto the mesh rod - this worked much better.

Let's move inside the Niva car. As you know, this SUV was created on the basis of the classic Zhiguli, so it is not surprising that many parts were borrowed from there. As for the interior, you can see the panel and steering wheel from the VAZ-2107. In terms of noise insulation, the Niva, of course, is far from being a leader. Many owners de-noise the body themselves by disassembling the interior down to the screw.

With the advent of the new Urban model, the situation has changed for the better, but not significantly. The instrument panel is now positioned from the “ten”, the steering wheel has a more convenient shape. The panel has changed slightly, but overall retains its angular features.

The only advantage worth noting is that it has a better level of equipment. "Niva" 5-door has electric windows, as well as electric mirror adjustment. But as owner reviews note, the 5-door Niva, even in its maximum configuration, is not equipped with music. This upsets many buyers. It is also worth noting the very noisy operation of the stove. There is no air conditioning here.

What distinguishes the long-wheelbase Niva from the short one is the rear row. The architecture of the seats here is the same, but the distance to the apron of the seats is an order of magnitude greater. Rear passengers will not feel cramped, unlike the three-door Niva. In this regard, the five-door deserves praise.

Driving capabilities

The Niva car, the interior dimensions of which can accommodate up to five people, is not a high-speed vehicle. Its characteristics are designed to overcome off-road conditions. This ability is provided by increased ground clearance, independent front suspension with wishbones, and a stabilizer bar. The rear suspension element is of a dependent type with a longitudinal and transverse linkage device.

With the advent of the VAZ-21213 model, developers began to pay more attention to car safety requirements. It began to be equipped with a diagonal brake circuit with an installed automatic locking system. The steering wheel has a hydraulic booster. It is worth noting that the Niva car (the dimensions of the new model have not changed) continues to be produced. At the same time, all the main components and parts are improved.

Maximum and minimum possible parameters of non-standard disks

Due to the design features of the body and wheel arches, it is possible to install wheels of various modifications. Many owners want to install models with a larger diameter than are available. The maximum permissible wheel parameters for which it is not necessary to use an angle grinder to modify the body:

  • profile width, mm – 215;
  • profile height, mm – 75.

The maximum permissible overhang is 35. When installing a profile with a width of more than 215 mm, the arches will have to be cut in any case. In turn, the minimum permissible offset is 58. These are the wheels that are installed on cars directly at the factory. The optimal solution is considered to be parameter 40-45. Second generation

A long and unfinished epic is the history of the second generation Chevrolet Niva. Back in 2014, the concept of a new model was prepared, and it was successfully tested on the roads of Italy and Sweden. After which the release was scheduled for the winter of 2015. But the plans were disrupted by the financial crisis, shifting the sales deadline to the winter of 2022, and in February 2018 the project was once again suspended.

Today it is known that the changes will affect engine power and external parameters of the car, but will bypass indicators characterizing capacity. The second generation promises potential buyers:

  • body dimensions: length will increase slightly to 4.316 m, width will increase by 30 mm;
  • the fuel tank volume will be 62 liters as opposed to the previous 58;
  • trunk volume in liters – 355 instead of the previous 320.

In the Chevrolet Niva, the trunk volume will only slightly expand. The rear seats can still fold down to improve cargo space. In some trim levels it is planned to use roof rails. It should be noted that the angularity of the new Niva could theoretically affect the usable volume in which luggage can be placed.

Power unit

The Niva, whose dimensions are quite modest, in the first generation was equipped with an engine from the VAZ-2106. The following modifications had upgraded power plants. The engine in the 2123 series is equipped with a new ignition and power system, which has a positive effect on fuel consumption. At the same time, the power plant itself received an increased volume of combustion compartments.

The engine capacity of the latest generations is 1.7 liters, it has a carburetor power system and a contactless ignition unit. The power that the engine can develop reaches 82 horsepower. On variation 2124, the engine remained the same, but received centralized fuel injection. The latest Niva power units have a volume of 1.8 liters and a power of 84 horsepower.

History of creation

The first production model of the Niva car, the dimensions of which belong to the category of SUVs, was released in 1977 under the symbol VAZ-2121. The car is made in a station wagon body and has three doors. The main difference from its counterparts is the presence of all-wheel drive. Some details are borrowed from the “six”. Considering the modest technical parameters, it is worth noting the high cross-country ability of this vehicle. The modification became so popular among the people that all subsequent variations were produced without significant changes in the body.

Engine

The power unit was left virtually unchanged - it is still the same 1.7-liter engine with distributed fuel injection, meeting the Euro-4 toxicity standard. The changes include the installation of more modern and reliable sealing materials with a silicone bead, a new type of water pump oil seal, as well as a new fuel supply system with quick-release connections. All engine characteristics also remain the same.

Transmission

The transmission has been modernized much more seriously. First of all, a new clutch from Valeo was installed - the same one that is installed on the NIVA-Chevrolet. As a result of this, the resource of this unit almost doubled, and the Niva 21214m car itself became less susceptible to vibration due to a reinforced damper spring and an enlarged disk.

A more efficient crankcase ventilation system was installed on the transfer case, the cardboard seals were replaced with silicone ones, and they began to be equipped with new seals.
