How to replace the Bendix on the starter on a VAZ 2109

Bendix is a device without which you cannot start your VAZ-2109 or any other car. Its task is to transmit torque from the starter rotor to the flywheel crown. It includes only two parts: a gear necessary for transmitting torque, as well as an overrunning clutch that prevents the first element from rotating in the opposite direction. If any violation occurs in this system, you will no longer be able to start the car and you will need to replace the Bendix on the VAZ-2109. Today we will analyze the procedure for KZATE starters, which are used by AvtoVAZ.

Definition

The VAZ-2109 starter bendix consists of an overrunning clutch, a gear and a mechanical element, the task of which is to protect the starter from the teeth of the rotating flywheel. The gear transmits a rotational impulse to the flywheel, while the clutch itself rotates this same gear in one direction. Bendix suppresses noise when starting the power plant and extends the life (service) of the starter.

Briefly and with pictures

Let's start:

You will need 10 and 13 socket wrenches, preferably socket wrenches, a Phillips and flathead screwdriver

The arrow indicates the flywheel teeth. Visually determine their condition.

Using a screwdriver, unscrew the two screws securing the starter cover.

Using a 13mm wrench, unscrew the nut securing the starter winding output to the solenoid relay.

We take out the washer-bracket

Using a 10mm wrench, unscrew the two long coupling bolts and remove them.

Check the condition of the bushing.

To disconnect the starter housing, you need to make a couple of light blows with a hammer on the lower housing, then the housing is easily separated. Pay attention to the condition of the brushes.

Use a screwdriver to remove the Bendix ears from the fork.

Hit the key with a hammer and knock down the retaining ring

Use a screwdriver to pry out the second retaining ring.

Up. I warn you - it's not easy.

We remove the bendix. Old and new side by side.

Reassemble in reverse order. Good luck.

Part failure: reasons

Bendix is relatively reliable and often does not cause much trouble for car enthusiasts, but a breakdown cannot be ruled out. The gears and rollers can wear out - these parts experience serious loads when starting the engine and when moving off the car.

The main signs that the part is faulty:

  • the engine does not start - the starter does not spin, but there are clicks;
  • when the power unit is running, the bendix does not disconnect from the flywheel, that is, the starter continues to spin;
  • smoke with a burning smell appears from the engine compartment;
  • When you try to start the engine, you can hear the starter whirring. The engine can be started only after several attempts.

These symptoms may indicate that the Bendix needs to be replaced with a new one.

Price issue

Finally, it’s worth adding that Bendix is an inexpensive spare part. For example, a Bendix VAZ 2101 (as well as other “classic” VAZs) costs about $5...6, catalog number is DR001C3. And the price of Bendix (no. 1006209923) for VAZ 2108-2110 cars is $12...15. The cost of Bendix for FORD cars of the Focus, Fiesta and Fusion brands is about 10...11 $. (cat. no. 1006209804). For TOYOTA Avensis and Corolla cars Bendix 1006209695 - $9...12.

Thus, repairs are often impractical for Bendix. It's easier to buy a new one and simply replace it. Moreover, when repairing individual parts, there is a high probability of rapid failure of others.

Main stage

It is necessary to adhere to the following algorithm of actions:

  1. Open the car hood.
  2. Remove the “-” terminal from the battery. This is necessary to avoid electric shock, since the work will involve power wires.
  3. Remove the “+” terminal from the top bolt of the starter solenoid relay using a size 13 wrench.
  4. Disconnect the nearby thin wire - pull it to the left, towards the wing. The purpose of this wiring is to energize the relay winding when the ignition key is turned to the “Start” position.
  5. Using a size 13 wrench, unscrew the nuts on the starter. Three nuts are located on the front of the part: bottom, middle, top.
  6. Remove the starter.

To replace the starter bendix (it cannot be repaired), you need to disassemble the starter itself, and this is not an easy task. But nothing is impossible:

  1. Using a screwdriver, unscrew the two fastening bolts of the cover and housing.
  2. Unscrew the bolts of the clamp that secures the solenoid relay to the starter.
  3. Unscrew the nut in contact with the power wire.
  4. Remove the retaining ring from the motor rotor.
  5. Unscrew the two studs using a 10mm wrench.
  6. Using a screwdriver, unscrew the bolts connecting the brushes to the contacts.
  7. Disassemble the starter into three parts.

The process of replacing Bendix VAZ 2109

This stage of work is the final and most critical. Before you start, you need to know how to properly replace the starter bendix. Photos of disassembling the entire assembly as a whole (starter) will help you understand the complexities of the procedure, as they clearly demonstrate the subtleties of the process. You have to do the following:

  1. Using a small hammer, carefully knock the washer off the rotor shaft.
  2. Unclench and remove the exposed ring using a flat-head screwdriver.
  3. Remove the bendix.

It is important not to lose small components and parts. You can try to diagnose a faulty bendix by rotating the gear in opposite directions. If it rotates freely or partially, a malfunction of the unit can be identified.

Every owner of a domestic car should know how to install a new VAZ-2109 starter bendix. There's nothing complicated about it. It is enough just to apply a small amount of lubricant to the rotor axle, and then install the ring. Next comes reassembling the starter in reverse order. After completing the installation of the starter solenoid relay, you can check the functionality of the new part by connecting the terminals to the battery.

Repair

Next, you have to check the condition one by one and take appropriate measures to eliminate problems with the following components of the starter:

  • Brushes;
  • Anchor;
  • Overrunning clutch;
  • Traction relay;
  • Bushings.

Now let's talk about everything one by one.

Brushes

First, assess the current condition of the brushes. In most cases, they are the source of problems with the starter.

  1. Remove the pair of screws that hold the protective cover in place. The cover is now easy to remove.
  2. Use a screwdriver to remove the retaining ring from the shaft, and don’t forget about the adjusting washers.
  3. Unscrew 2 more tie rod nuts. Remove the manifold side cover.
  4. Use a screwdriver to press out the springs and remove the brushes from the holder.
  5. Measure the brushes with a caliper or ruler. If the height is less than 12 millimeters, the brushes must be replaced.
  6. It is also better to replace elements if there are chips, cracks and other defects on the surface.

Performance evaluation

After completing the work, you should check how the engine starts. The starting engine should run smoothly, without knocking and grinding noises characteristic of a faulty overrunning clutch. This is a sign of a high-quality replacement of the Bendix on VAZ-2109-2115 cars.

In some cases, changing the bendix is not enough. Prolonged operation of a faulty clutch leads to wear and damage to the flywheel teeth. In this case, the symptoms of failure that existed before replacing the gear may become weaker, but do not disappear completely. In such cases, it is necessary to replace the flywheel.

How to Remove Bendix from VAZ 2109 Starter

Self-changes Bendix VAZ-2109
Bendix. This is a device without which you cannot drive your own VAZ-2109 in another car. His task. transmit torque from the starter rotor to the flywheel crown. It contains only two parts: a gear needed to transmit torque, in addition to a movable clutch that prevents the first element from rotating in the opposite direction. If this system has a problem, start over with the car. You can no longer do this and you will need to change the mandix to the VAZ-2109. Now we will analyze the procedure for KZATE starters used by AvtoVAZ.

What do you need for work?

Please note right away that Bendix cannot be repaired. Accordingly, if this fails, you will need to spend time and money to install a new one. Modern, its price is not so high, so there is no point in trying to return the irreparable. Moreover, the procedure for installing a new device is not that complicated. The main thing is that the necessary parts and tools are nearby. Because the work is good for you:

  • screwdriver plus and minus;
  • wrenches 13 and 10;
  • hammer;
  • pliers;
  • replacement part.

Workflow

Let's start with the previous steps. First you need to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery. Replacing the Bendix requires manipulation of the wiring, since disconnecting the battery is a mandatory safety requirement. Then we come to the retractor relay. He can see two bolts: top and bottom. The conductor that connects the relay to the battery is connected to the former. You will need to turn it off, here you will need a key to 13. Next you will notice a small wire that supplies power to the winding when the key is turned on in the ignition. It should also be disabled, you just need to pull it slightly to the left.

We then move on to the starter removal procedure. On the front side you will notice three nuts located from top to bottom. They are also removed with a key of 13. Disassembly is complete, starter

you need to reach out and prepare to work directly with him. You will need to disassemble this item, remove the waiting panel and install a new one. But first everything.

Once you have removed the starter , review this. Assess the current condition of the bushings, rotor windings, brushes and fins. If you notice any damage to them, you will have the option to replace them immediately. Now let's move on to disassembling the device. This is done as follows:

  1. The cover is attached to the body with two bolts. We remove them.
  2. The next line of disassembly will be the starter cleaning bolts and the nut that makes contact with the power cable.
  3. You can now see the ring on the rotor. We are dismantling.
  4. We arm ourselves with wrench 10 and remove the studs.
  5. The brushes are connected to the contacts with small screws. A screwdriver comes to the rescue.

The starter can now be separated. It will close into 3 parts.

Finally, we come to the most important part. dismantling the bandix. First, carefully lower the washer onto the rotor shaft. A small hammer will help you with this. Below this is a ring for which you will need a screwdriver. And finally, old bandix

maybe

.

But what if the reason is not the destruction of this element? This is actually very easy to check. Try turning the gear. If he is caught in 1/4 turn, then the bandix works. If the gear rotates freely in both directions. bandix

Feel free to throw this away. Installation is in the reverse order.

Examination

Checking the Bendix begins with an external inspection of the gear. It should have straight teeth with a pronounced or slightly rounded lead-in chamfer, facilitating engagement with the flywheel. Without this chamfer, with a possible tooth-to-tooth contact, the starter will not rotate the flywheel until the crankshaft moves at a small angle.

The presence of chips and cracks on the teeth is unacceptable.

How to check starter bendix? Fix its outer race (by wedging it against the body with a powerful screwdriver) and turn the gear in both directions. In one it should turn easily, in the other it should be tightly blocked. Difficulty turning to the “idle” side indicates jamming of the rollers or contamination of the bendix.

Typical faults

It is better to start diagnosing the starter even before you remove it.

After dismantling, some signs of failure, by which the source of the problems can be determined, can no longer be determined.

Signs of a faulty element include:

  • An unusual noise occurs when the engine starts;
  • Complete absence or slow rotation of the starter;
  • Rotation occurs, but there is no gear engagement with the Bendix ring;
  • The unit rotates with the bendix, but then the clutch breaks;
  • Turning the key in the ignition, there is silence.
