Choosing the right starter for a VAZ 2109: what do you need to know?

The VAZ 2109 starter has a classic electric motor design with a brush assembly, winding, gearbox and return electromagnetic relay. The principle of operation of the mechanism is to spin the engine crankshaft until the ignition cycle is fully started - the fuel mixture in the cylinders ignites and the generator turns on. The starter is powered in the general electrical circuit of the car from the DC battery; after the crankshaft drive is activated, when its torque becomes greater than the flywheel rotation speed, the retractor return relay gives an impulse to the return clutch, turning off the drive unit.

Standard starters on the VAZ 2108, 2109 models and modification 21099 “Samara” are interchangeable and are suitable for any of these models, both in terms of technical characteristics and installation fasteners. Over the entire production period, VAZ models of this series were equipped mainly with three types of starter with original numbers:

  • 3708 – basic version with a ring collector and a rotary drive. Its power is 1.3 kW with a current consumption of 40 A.
  • 3708 is a modernized version of the previous one with a cylindrical collector, a power of 1.3 kW and a current of 60 A.
  • 3708 - an improved starter for the Lada-Samara family with a cermet bushing for the working part of the armature shaft with a power of 1.5 kW and an idle current of 80 A.

The differences in the design features of these starters are small - changes were made to the elements of the commutator units, Bendix drives and some materials of the bushings made of cermets. Version 5712.3708 was later equipped with a planetary drive gearbox.

Replacing the bendix on the VAZ 2109 starter

Bendix is a device without which you cannot start your VAZ-2109 or any other car. Its task is to transmit torque from the starter rotor to the flywheel crown. It includes only two parts: a gear necessary for transmitting torque, as well as an overrunning clutch that prevents the first element from rotating in the opposite direction. If any violation occurs in this system, you will no longer be able to start the car and you will need to replace the Bendix on the VAZ-2109. Today we will analyze the procedure for KZATE starters, which are used by AvtoVAZ.

What do you need for work?

Let us immediately draw your attention to the fact that Bendix cannot be repaired. Accordingly, if it breaks, then you will definitely have to spend time and money to install a new one. Fortunately, its cost is not that high, so there is no point in trying to restore something that cannot be restored. Moreover, the installation procedure for a new device is not so complicated. The main thing is to have the necessary parts and tools at hand. For work you will need:

  • positive and negative screwdrivers;
  • open-end wrenches for 13 and 10;
  • hammer;
  • pliers;
  • spare part.

Please note that not every Bendix will fit a specific starter. Therefore, you will need to buy a suitable part.

Progress

We start with preparatory measures.
First of all, you need to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery. Replacing the Bendix will require manipulation of the electrical wiring, so disconnecting the battery is a mandatory safety requirement. Next we move on to the solenoid relay. You will see two bolts on it: upper and lower. The first is connected to a conductor connecting the relay to the battery. It will need to be turned off, here you will need a key set to 13. Nearby you will notice a small wire that provides power to the winding when you turn the key in the ignition. It will also need to be turned off; just pull it slightly to the left. Next we move on to the procedure for removing the starter. On the front panel you will notice three nuts, located from top to bottom. They can also be removed using a key number 13. Dismantling is completed, the starter needs to be pulled out and prepared to work directly with it. You will need to disassemble this element, remove the non-working bendix from it and install a new one. But first things first.

After you have removed the starter, inspect it. Assess the current condition of the bushing, rotor windings, brushes and lamellas. If you notice any damage to them, you will have the opportunity to replace them immediately. Now let's move on to disassembling the device. It is performed as follows:

  1. The cover is fixed to the body with two bolts. Let's remove them.
  2. Next in line for dismantling will be the bolts securing the retractor to the starter and the nut that ensures contact with the power cable.
  3. You can now see the retaining ring on the rotor. We dismantle it.
  4. We arm ourselves with a 10mm wrench and remove the studs.
  5. The brushes are connected to the contacts using small bolts. The screwdriver comes to our aid.

The starter can now be separated.
It will separate into 3 parts. Finally, we move on to the most important thing - dismantling the Bendix. To begin, you will need to carefully knock off the washer located on the rotor shaft. A small hammer will help you with this. There is a ring underneath that you will need a screwdriver to remove. And finally, the old bendix can be removed.

But what if the reason does not lie in the breakdown of this element? In fact, this is very easy to check. Try spinning the gear. If it grabs after 1/4 turn, then the bendix is working. If the gear rotates freely in both directions, you can safely throw away the Bendix. Installation is carried out in reverse order.

Sequential disassembly of the starter

The whole process occurs in several stages, and at each stage a potential malfunction can be identified.

The first stage involves inspecting the brushes after removing them. This is generally the most common problem that prevents the starter from working properly. To do this, do the following:

  1. Unscrew the two screws that secure the protection cover. It comes off very easily.
  2. Using a screwdriver, remove the retaining ring and adjusting washers from the shaft.
  3. The next step is to remove the two tie rod nuts and the cover can be removed from the manifold side.
  4. Now, using a screwdriver, you can press the springs and pull the brushes out of their seats.

To measure the height of the brushes, use a ruler or caliper. If the element height is less than 12 mm, then they should be replaced. If there are chips and cracks on the surface, this is also a reason to update them with new parts.

How to replace the Bendix VAZ 2109 correctly?

Bendix appearance:

Every owner of nines should know what a VAZ 2109 Bendix is and how to properly replace and diagnose it. So what is it and how to change it correctly? Bendix is a mechanism that is the connecting link between the starter rotor and the flywheel crown of the VAZ 2109 car. It contains a small number of elements - a gear and an overrunning clutch.

The first transmits rotational motion to the flywheel, and the second allows the gear to rotate in one direction. Note this property, it is very important for the normal functioning of the Bendix VAZ 2109 and other models.

Checking the overrunning clutch with gear

In order to get to the overrunning clutch with the gear, you will need to pull the armature out of the front cover. Sequencing:

  1. Remove the retaining ring next to the overrunning clutch, and then remove the restrictor ring.
  2. The next step is to remove the plastic lever stop and remove the anchor.
  3. Now remove the intermediate support from the shaft.
  4. Visually assess the condition of the gear teeth. If obvious defects are noticed, then this element must be replaced.

Gearbox or rotary starter for VAZ 2109?

Hello! Today I will tell you with my own example about the differences between gearbox and rotary starters! For a long time I suffered with this rotary starter, installed back in 1998 in Togliatti on the AvtoVAZ assembly line. Owners' suffering, as a rule, begins under certain circumstances)) For example, when the battery is several years old and there are problems with the power supply or ignition system. That is, when the carburetor overflows or there is a slight malfunction of the distributor, when it’s already difficult to start (and you have to go to work), then our battery comes to the rescue in getting through the day =) We tried to start. There was just a little bit left and it should have been “grabbed”, but the battery died =( And then psychosis, hatred of everything in the world, despair. Everyone knows this!

This is my old starter. Rotary. Renovated 5 times already.

I got a car from my dad relatively recently. Previously, I could not influence her fate and for some reason I was not interested in how and what was going on with dad. He lived in Budennovsk, I lived in Moscow. But now...

While closely studying our and non-our automobile industry, I learned that modern cars have gear starters. Well, I bought myself a brand new shiny ZIT starter.

Here it is, below.

Let's talk about the differences right away. When I removed my old starter, I still remember how I broke my finger and scratched my hand. I also remember that it is heavy. When I bought a ZIT gear starter, it seemed much lighter to me. Then I compared and YES! It's really lighter. As for the seating, everything is identical. We install the same three holes on three studs and tighten them with nuts.

Well, now about the differences.

  • What can I say about the stock starter that was installed in the VAZ 2109 in those years. Well, for starters, it's rotary.
