VAZ 2114: cleaning the throttle body (video and photos) - signs of contamination, necessary tools

04/04/2013 Throttle valve
Flushing the throttle assembly and valve is not a difficult task. But many car owners do not know how to clean, why and when, and, having little experience in car maintenance, are afraid to climb under the hood and do anything with their own hands.

In this article we will analyze the entire procedure for flushing the throttle assembly, and I hope that the typical car owner will no longer have all the questions about performing this operation.

Where is the DZ located?

Engine compartment

The entire throttle body is located in the engine compartment. It is located between the intake manifold and the air filter. In other words, the air enters the filter, passes through the mass air flow sensor, enters the remote control, and from there goes to the engine through the intake manifold (receiver). To find out where the remote control is located, pay attention to the figure (number 3).

Troubleshooting

Before taking any action, you need to check the VAZ 2114 throttle valve for possible problems.

In order to accurately diagnose a malfunction or incorrect operation of the throttle, there are characteristic signs inherent to it. These are:

  • Instability of engine speed at idle, their unreasonable increase;
  • Periodically stalling engine;
  • Jerking while moving;
  • The discrepancy between the effort when squeezing the gas pedal and the final result (the proper reaction from the engine does not occur, power does not increase, the car does not pick up speed or does it late).
  • Noticeable increase in fuel consumption in standard driving mode.

Please note that problems may be caused by:

  1. The TPS sensor is faulty, resulting in the wrong amount of fuel being supplied to the system.
  2. Malfunction of the idle speed controller.

Therefore, sometimes it is advisable to check these important elements of the system.

Signs of a dirty remote control

The most common symptoms associated with a dirty damper:

  1. Poor engine starting.
  2. Unstable idling, speed fluctuates.
  3. The car jerks when driving at low speeds.
  4. Difficulty idling, engine stalls.

All these signs indicate a dirty remote control. But do not rush to draw conclusions and start cleaning the unit, because they may also indicate a breakdown of some sensors: IAC, TPS - they are located on the throttle assembly and may be faulty. In particular, high-quality washing of the remote control can cure them, but not a fact (by following the link, you can check, clean, replace the IAC, check the TPS, repair and replace it). A faulty mass air flow sensor also has similar symptoms. It is advisable to clean the remote control at intervals of 30 thousand km.

Cleaning the throttle body

In general, I suffered with this problem for a long time. But the problem is that when you start to change gears, the car starts to howl, and the revs drop poorly.

— someone said that the IAC is faulty ( Idle Air Controller)

) - others said that the damper does not close completely

like this, but I'm fine

— there was also the option that the cable ( gas)

)ъ - and the last option was that the throttle was dirty

Well, I decided I should try it too, if everyone speaks so positively about it.

I went to the nearest auto store and bought the spare parts needed for this task:

— carburetor cleaner ( for some reason many drivers use a carburetor rather than an injector

)

- throttle gasket

- air filter, SCT SB201, as they have good reviews of it

We arrived at the garage and started working on the car.

:

1. First, open the hood and prepare the tools:

2. Turn on the ignition and unscrew the terminal from the battery

3. Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the clamp

4. Remove the air hose from the mass air flow sensor housing.

5. Loosen the clamp securing the air hose to the throttle pipe

6. Loosen the clamp securing the crankcase ventilation hose to the cylinder head cover pipe.

7. Remove the air hose assembly with the crankcase ventilation hose

8. Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the fastening clamp and remove the crankcase ventilation hose from the throttle assembly fitting

9. Loosen the fastening clamps and remove the coolant supply and discharge hoses

10. Using a “13” socket, unscrew the two nuts securing the throttle assembly to the receiver

11. Remove the throttle assembly from the studs and the sealing gasket

12. Unscrew the IAC (Idle Speed Control

) and another sensor where the foam ring is located.

13. Get the carburetor cleaner

and begin to carefully wash all the grooves and holes

14. Next I changed ( the air filter

)

there is a difference

15. And we begin to assemble the throttle assembly and air filter in reverse order.

Result : as a result of the work done, the car disappeared ( but a little of that problem of high revs still remains, maybe it’s because I’m already used to

)), but I still think everyone should do this.

Flushing the remote control

In this article we will describe two types of DS cleaning:

  1. Surface.
  2. Full.

They differ in the degree of complexity and, accordingly, in quality.

Superficial cleaning

Its essence is that we will not completely disassemble the entire remote control, but will go over the damper with a cloth and remove surface dirt.

For work we will need:

  1. Any cleaning agent: carburetor cleaner, alcohol, thinner, gasoline, wd-40. They differ in the degree of “removability” of dirt.
  2. Rag.
  3. Brush.

First of all, we remove the air filter corrugation from the air filter, take our cleaning agent and spray it inside. We begin to clean the surface with a rag and brush. Also, do not forget to open the damper itself and clean it from the back. At this point the process is completed, we install the filter pipe back, and that’s it. But with this cleaning method, we will not be able to completely clean all the insides of the remote control, blow out all the holes and channels, so it is better to use a complete cleaning.

Complete cleaning of the remote control

To perform a complete cleaning of the damper, in addition to a rag and cleaning agent, we will need:

  1. Flathead, Phillips screwdriver.
  2. DZ gasket (for 1.5 l) and receiver o-ring (for 1.6 l).
  3. Cotton buds.
  4. Socket wrench set to "13".
  5. 2 M13 bolts.

In this case, we need to completely remove the remote control and clean it from all sides.

  1. In order to remove the unit, disconnect the air filter corrugation and remove the coolant pipes. liquid and adsorber.
  2. Disconnect the remote control mount, remove the throttle cable, and remove the remote control. If you need a more detailed description of removing the unit, then read the article: How to remove the remote control, remote control?
  3. Having removed the DZ, we disconnect and clean the IAC sensors (how to clean the IAC), TPS and completely wash the damper on all sides with a cleaner, be sure to blow out all the holes with compressed air.
  4. Then we install everything back, not forgetting to put in a new gasket.

Signs of a dirty throttle valve

During vehicle operation, factors such as low fuel quality, highly contaminated air filter, and dirt entering the intake system affect the contamination of the throttle valve. Any owner of a VAZ 2114 can identify signs that make it possible to identify a high accumulation of dirt in a given unit:

  1. Delayed “reaction” of the gas pedal when it is pressed. Dips when accelerating the engine speed are a clear sign of problems in the throttle valve.
  2. Floating engine speed. Incomplete contact of the damper with the throttle walls leads to air entering the intake that is not accounted for by the mass air flow sensor. This affects the stability of the engine.
  3. Noticeable engine twitching when driving at low speeds.
  4. Sudden engine stops.
  5. Increased fuel consumption. Violation of the air-fuel mixture leads to excessive consumption of gasoline and also negatively affects the dynamics of the car.

It is clear that some of the problems listed may be caused by failure of other components, however, before troubleshooting, it is recommended to clean the throttle.

Untimely cleaning of the throttle valve will lead to a significant decrease in the dynamics of the car, cause problems with starting the car when cold, and will also increase gasoline consumption. The procedure for cleaning this unit from contamination does not cause difficulties even for inexperienced drivers, so we definitely recommend that you read the further step-by-step instructions, which describe in detail how to clean the throttle valve on a VAZ 2114 on your own. First, let's look at the necessary set of tools that will come in handy during the work process.

Useful : How much does a new throttle valve cost for a VAZ 2114?

LET'S SUM UP

Supporters of replacing the remote control with a different diameter argueOpponents of replacing the remote control with a different diameter argue
Replacement increases power and improves engine speed and gas pedal responsivenessWashing or repairing a standard remote control gives similar effects
Does not affect gas mileageAffects gas mileage, as everything is interconnected
Does not create problems in engine operationCreates problems because the ECU cannot correctly adjust the ratio of air and gasoline in the mixture
Problems that arise can be solved with firmwareProblems are solved by flushing
Clearly, all tangible effects are associated with changing the remote control and are enhanced in combination with other improvementsTangible effects are achieved by flushing the unit, and the use of other improvements improves the performance of the engine without replacing the remote control

Here everyone decides for himself, we will not enter into disputes, there are simply different opinions, and we are obliged to warn about the pitfalls and the other side of the coin.

Diagnostics and cleaning of IAC

Be sure to check its condition - there should be no dirt on it. Remove the regulator and connect it to the wiring block (the ignition must be on). The rod should retract completely and extend a few millimeters. Visually assess the condition of the device to see if there is any damage to it. Very often, the cause of unstable speed is a weakened or burst spring. In this case, it will need to be replaced. Cleaning the throttle valve on a VAZ-2114, done by yourself, still won’t hurt.

Features of cleaning electronic remote control

For cars that have an electronic gas pedal (E-gas), the process of removing the throttle valve is much simpler than in conventional models. After all, during the dismantling process there will be no need to disconnect sensors, heating hoses and throttle cables.

Complete cleaning of the electronic throttle is done as follows:

  1. The VAZ 2114 throttle is removed. To do this, the air filter and corrugation are dismantled, and then the remote control pipes are disconnected. Then the “trick” from the throttle itself is disconnected.
  2. To unscrew all the bolts you will need a long hex wrench No. 5 (short ones cannot reach the lower far bolt).
  3. Cleaning. The device has a simple design and can be cleaned using an aerosol carburetor cleaner. Wipe the part dry with a soft cloth.

It is important not to try to forcefully move the flap with your finger or put pressure on it.

  1. The throttle is installed in its original place.

External cleaning

You can clean the throttle valve on a VAZ-2114 without removing the entire assembly. There is one advantage - you will do all the work very quickly, but you will not be able to clean the inside this way. As a result, the channels in the throttle assembly may remain contaminated, but this will not change the situation - all the symptoms will continue to bother you. External dirt can be easily cleaned. For work, it is best to use a special spray for cleaning carburetors. But keep in mind that it is very aggressive, so it is advisable to work in protective equipment - a respirator and gloves. Do not allow liquid to get on plastic elements - it will corrode them.

The cleaning procedure is as follows:

  1. Remove the corrugation from the throttle assembly.
  2. Thoroughly spray all surfaces of the throttle body.
  3. Wait a little so that the liquid destroys as much dirt as possible.
  4. Use an old toothbrush to clean all surfaces of the throttle body. For maximum efficiency, manually open the damper slightly.
  5. Spray again and wipe all surfaces dry with a cloth.
  6. Reinstall the bellows and start the engine.

The method is simple, but it is unlikely to help get rid of serious stains. Therefore, it is best to completely disassemble the entire assembly and wash it.
