Clean fuel is the key to long and trouble-free operation of any car. This rule also applies to the Volkswagen Polo. The car is extremely demanding on the quality of gasoline. Even minor problems in the fuel purification system can lead to serious engine malfunctions. Is it possible to change the filter yourself? Yes. Let's figure out how this is done.

We remove the fuel filter from the clamp, while removing the filter pin from the holder on the clamp.
Since fuel remains in the filter, we drain it into a previously prepared container.
Install the filter in reverse order.
In this case, the arrow on the filter housing should be directed in the direction of fuel flow (towards the front of the car).
When to change the fuel filter
There are points by which you can determine that the time to replace the filter has already come, although the required 30 thousand km. The Volkswagen Polo has not yet passed. We bend our fingers and find out the problems:
- the engine does not start, although the starter turns properly and the fuel gauge indicates a full tank;
- the engine “troubles”, this is especially felt at idle speed, although vibration and uncertain operation of the engine are also felt while driving;
- when you press the gas, “dips” occur in the operation of the power unit;
- acceleration time increased;
- The engine suddenly stalls, both at idle and while driving.
If at least one of these symptoms appears, you should pay attention to the fuel filter and, if necessary, update it.

We put the tip of the tube with a blue clamp (fuel drain tube from the fuel filter) onto the middle fitting of the fuel filter.
We insert the pin into the holder on the clamp. Having installed the fuel pump fuse, turn on the ignition and check the tightness of the connections.

Replacing the fuel filter on Polo sedan
To gain free access to the desired location, you need to drive the Volkswagen Polo into a pit in the garage or onto an overpass.
There is always pressure in the fuel system.
We remove the pressure: with the engine turned off, from the fuse block (located under the steering wheel) we remove the element responsible for the functioning of the fuel pump - No. 36.
Now we start the engine and wait for the remaining fuel to be used up. When it ends, the car will stall. After stopping the engine, you need to turn on the ignition for 5 seconds. That’s it, there is no pressure in the fuel system and you can start removing the filter.
- Using a flat-head screwdriver, press out the fastening of the fuel drain pipe. Then we disconnect the main fitting and hoses (inlet and outlet).
- We disconnect the handbrake cable from the clamp so that it does not interfere.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the fasteners and clamps.
- Carefully remove the filter from its seat.
- We drain the remainder from the gas line and proceed to installing a new filter element.
To fill the system, pour a little gasoline into the new filter and insert it into the seat. The filter is installed in the reverse order.
The arrow marked on the surface of the filter should be directed towards the front of the car.
The tips of the lines must be installed on the filter fittings until they snap into place.
Now all that remains is to replace the fuse and start the car. It may not start right away, because... there is no pressure in the system, but after several attempts everything will definitely work out.

The automaker does not indicate the installation time for new front pads.
To the inspection of components for the first maintenance, the following examination is added:
- shock absorbers and front and rear suspension;
- play in the front wheel hub bearings;

Tools and materials
Before removing and replacing the filter, have the following ready:
- New TF. In order for the required device to efficiently filter the fuel entering the fuel system, preference must be given to original parts. In Volkswagen Polo sedan or hatchback, you can use Mann cleaning devices. The original article number is WK692. It is important that the filter is equipped with a pressure regulator.
- Flat head screwdriver. It will be required to loosen and remove the clamps securing the TF.
- Phillips head screwdriver.
- Clean rags.
- A cut bottle or other small container. It will be needed to collect remaining fuel from the cleaning device during dismantling.
User shlepanovan made a video that clearly demonstrates the procedure for replacing the cleaning device in a Volkswagen Polo car.
If the filter is at the bottom
It is not convenient to replace the element in cars in which it is located at the bottom.
To do this, you will need to use an overpass or drive the car to some hill - this will serve you for convenience.
For example, we will take the Volkswagen Polo Sedan brand. The fuel cell on the bottom of the car is located near the gas tank on the right side.
First, disconnect the three hoses. They are clearly visible and accessible. When we disconnect the hoses, the system will release pressure.
Press the blue button with your finger or a screwdriver. Using a screwdriver, you can unscrew the mounting bolt and remove the filter.
To install a new element, remove the plugs and insert it into the mount. There is an arrow on the filter; install it in the direction of the arrow towards the driver's seat.
Install until it clicks. And so on for all three valves.
We fix the bolt on the mount with a self-tapping screw. We check that no hoses are kinked during installation. We start the car and let it run for a few minutes. We check that there are no leaks and that all joints are dry.
There is a tube next to the filter, try not to damage it, otherwise you will have to change the entire system.
Part life
The filter element is used to clean the fuel from dirt and moisture on the way from the fuel tank to the engine. Without it, the power unit will quickly fail. This fully applies to cars running on diesel fuel. The design is equipped with 2 fuel supply pipes and 1 exhaust pipe.
The fuel filter is replaced after 30 thousand km of vehicle operation. Or at least once every 2 years.
If you often use low-quality fuel, the time required to replace the Polo Sedan fuel filter is reduced to 20 thousand km. Determination of the condition and replacement of filter fuel elements is carried out after a set of diagnostic measures. When changing an element, you need to remember that there are design features of the car in which the fuel filter is changed complete with a pump and fuel level sensor.
But the time frame for replacing the VW Polo Sedan fuel filter can be reduced for a number of subjective and objective reasons:
- Filling the car with low-quality fuel.
- Operating a car under heavy loads.
- Low quality consumables.
Frequent operation of the vehicle in dusty areas may reduce the service life of the element.
Five signs your fuel filter is bad
Identifying signs that the fuel filter has some kind of malfunction is quite problematic. Often the signs of a fuel filter breakdown are similar to the signs of breakdown of other components and assemblies in the car.
But among the most important and obvious are the following:
The engine runs erratically, there are some strange new sounds that do not disappear until the engine is turned off.
Engine thrust can seriously drop due to a clogged fuel filter in the car.
You can simply forget about high engine speeds if the fuel filter is defective or broken.
You can measure the volume of fuel supplied and its pressure in the fuel rail, and if these indicators are not high enough, then this only indicates that the fuel filter is faulty.
Also, a breakdown in the fuel filter in a car has a noticeable effect on fuel consumption - this is the most obvious sign of a breakdown in this device.
Five signs can tell a motorist that it’s time to go to an auto center and have the car diagnostically checked. But these signs also indicate a breakdown of the fuel filter, which you can replace with your own hands, without resorting to the services of specialists.
Which filter to buy - original or high-quality analogue
Spare parts for Volkswagen Polo are cheap. But often craftsmen install parts from other manufacturers. It is best to use products from well-known large companies:
