Daewoo Matiz - love at first sight. Cars have no prejudices; each car is a set of advantages and a baggage of disadvantages. And the advantages of Matiz are colossal! All cars are the embodiment of engineering. And the people who painstakingly developed component parts and calculated a large number of physical parameters, trying to maintain a balance between reliability and cost, hardly expected that the car would be called a lady's car or brutal, categorized as luxurious or a matter of whims.

With a mileage of forty thousand kilometers, it is necessary to change the oil in the Daewoo Matiz automatic transmission. Experts recommend taking a close look at the automatic gearbox.

The engineers have tears in their eyes, but they need to look at it differently. For a driver who is not keen on independently maintaining the car, the automatic transmission is a gear selection lever, it is a selector, on the center console in the cabin. This may be the tip of the iceberg, but from the top you can see a lot.

If the car did not show symptoms of malaise, to strengthen your understanding of the technical serviceability of the vehicle, check the operation of the gearbox.

Test No. 1

Let's proceed to one of the methods for checking the Matiz gearbox:

  1. We start the engine, confidently press the brake pedal all the way, and release the handbrake.
  2. Then, move the selector lever one by one to all positions.
  3. From mode “P” (parking) to mode “R” (reverse - moving backward), or when switching from mode “N” (neutral - no gear is occupied) to mode “D4” (drive - moving forward with sequential connection).

When the gear is engaged, there should be no shocks; loud, harsh sounds that frighten the timid driver should not be heard from somewhere in the depths of the car. The tachometer needle should sway slightly in the wake of the new gear and freeze at the new value; the engine will raise the tone of a contented rumbling, demonstrating the tractability and serviceability of the systems.

A similar check is carried out on a flat surface of the parking space.

WARNING: During road tests, do not take your eyes off the road for more than half a second!

Daewoo Matiz | Basic checks and adjustments on the car | Daewoo Matiz

  • Checking the oil level (ATF) in the automatic transmission
  • Drive the vehicle until the transmission oil (ATF) reaches normal operating temperature (70–80°C).
  • Place the car on a flat, horizontal platform.
  • Press the brake pedal and move the automatic transmission selector lever sequentially through all positions (holding it in each of them for a few seconds) to fill the entire automatic transmission control hydraulic system and the automatic transmission torque converter with oil (ATF), and then set the selector lever to the “N” position.

Before removing the oil dipstick, clean the area around it from dirt. Remove the dipstick and check the condition of the gearbox oil (ATF).

NOTE If the oil (ATF) in the automatic transmission has a burnt smell, this is a sign of contamination with small particles of wear on the friction linings of the gearbox control elements. In this case, the transmission may need to be overhauled.

The normal automatic transmission oil level (ATF) should be in the “HOT” range of the oil dipstick. If the level is below the specified level, add automatic transmission oil (ATF) to the normal level.

Automatic transmission oil (ATF): GENUINE HYUNDAI ATF SP-II M.

NOTE If the oil level (ATF) in the automatic transmission is below normal, the oil pump will capture oil along with air, which will lead to the formation of bubbles and foaming of the oil in the hydraulic system. This will reduce the operating pressure in the hydraulic control system, which in turn will lead to a delay when changing gears (late gear engagement) and slipping of the friction clutches or brakes. If the oil level (ATF) in the automatic transmission is higher than normal, then due to the rotation of the gears of the planetary mechanisms, excessive foaming of the oil (ATF) will occur, which will result in the same consequences as in the case of a low oil level (ATF) in the automatic transmission. In both cases, air bubbles cause overheating, oil oxidation (ATF) and varnish deposits, which damage valves, clutches and actuators. Foaming also causes oil (ATF) to be released through the automatic transmission crankcase breather, which is mistaken for a leak.

Insert the oil dipstick firmly into the standard hole.

In case of major overhaul of an automatic transmission or operation of a vehicle in difficult road conditions, changing the automatic transmission oil (ATF) and oil filter is mandatory. The procedure for changing automatic transmission oil (ATF) is described below. It must be remembered that only special oil filters are used in automatic transmissions.

ATTENTION It must be remembered that only special oil filters are used in automatic transmissions.

Changing the automatic transmission oil (ATF)

You can use the installation for quick oil change (ATF) in automatic transmission (ATF fluid charger). If there is no such setting, change the automatic transmission oil (ATF) as described below.

  1. Draining oil (ATF) from the automatic transmission hydraulic system:
  2. – disconnect the hose that connects the gearbox to the oil cooler located inside the engine cooling radiator;
  3. – start the engine and let the oil (ATF) drain through the hose.
  4. Conditions for performing the operation:
  5. – the engine is idling;
  6. – the automatic transmission selector lever is in the “N” position.
ATTENTION The engine must be turned off one minute after starting. If all the oil (ATF) has leaked out before this moment, then the engine must be turned off immediately.
  • Unscrew the drain plug on the bottom of the automatic transmission housing and drain the oil (ATF) from the automatic transmission oil pan.
  • Reinstall the drain plug with gasket and tighten the plug to a torque of 32 Nm.
  • Fill in new automatic transmission oil (ATF) through the automatic transmission oil filler pipe.
ATTENTION If the rated amount of automatic transmission oil (ATF) is not included in the transmission, stop filling.
NOTE Check for contamination in the drained oil (ATF). If the automatic transmission is filled with more than the nominal amount of ATF, let the oil drain from the gearbox again.

Replace the external automatic transmission oil filter. If the oil (ATF) is significantly contaminated, check the condition of the internal automatic transmission oil filter.

Fill in new automatic transmission oil (ATF) through the automatic transmission oil filler pipe.

Connect the automatic transmission oil cooler hose and reinstall the oil dipstick securely. Before installing the automatic transmission oil dipstick, clean the area around it from dirt.

Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.

Move the automatic transmission selector lever sequentially through all positions and then set it to the “N” position.

Make sure that the automatic transmission oil (ATF) level is in the “COLD” range of the dipstick. If the level is below the specified level, add the required amount of automatic transmission oil (ATF).

Drive the car for a certain distance so that the oil temperature (ATF) reaches the normal operating value (70–80°C), then check the automatic transmission oil level (ATF) again, which should be in the “NOT” range (“warm-up automatic transmission”) .

Rice. 3.60 . Oil dipstick

Firmly install the oil dipstick into the automatic transmission oil filler pipe (Fig. 3.60).

Replacing the automatic transmission oil filter

Remove the air filter assembly, then use a special tool (oil filter chain wrench, etc.) to remove the automatic transmission oil filter.

After removing the filter, use cloth gloves or a rag to clean the surface of the gearbox from splashes of automatic transmission oil (ATF), dirt, etc.

Clean the mounting surface of the automatic transmission oil filter.

Rice. 3.61 . Oil filter gasket

Lubricate the surface of the automatic transmission oil filter ring gasket with a small amount of clean automatic transmission oil (ATF) (Fig. 3.61).

  1. Reinstall the automatic transmission oil filter.
  2. Tightening torque: 11–13 Nm.
  3. Check the automatic transmission oil (ATF) level in the gearbox.

Test No. 2

The second method is designed to check the gearbox:

  1. Let's hit the road in the Daewoo Matiz. Select “D” and move away from the parking area onto a flat road with the least traffic.
  2. At the beginning of the movement, smoothly press the gas pedal, each time by ear, or by the tachometer needle, determining when the gear shift occurs, and try to remember the shift intervals and the position of the needle.
  3. Then stop and start moving again, pressing the pedal so that you approach the moment of shifting more slowly, delaying the engagement of the next gear.

Do we see any jerks or suspicious sounds? On to the next test!

Practical advice on choosing oil for Daewoo Matiz automatic transmission

Daewoo Matiz is a small budget car, which provides for its inexpensive maintenance. As an automatic unit, the manufacturer installs a four-speed automatic transmission from the Japanese company Jatco. These boxes have already proven themselves to be reliable and easy to maintain mechanisms. But for the unit to work properly, it is necessary to use only high-quality lubricants.

When changing the oil in a Daewoo Matiz automatic transmission, you need to pay special attention. Any transmission fluid purchased at the nearest auto store may not be suitable in terms of its lubricating and temperature properties. The choice of product must be approached responsibly.

Original oil

Timely replacement of automatic transmission oil on Daewoo Matiz extends the service life of the unit, maintaining clear gear shifting and the absence of extraneous sounds while driving. The manufacturer Daewoo Matiz recommends using the Korean semi-synthetic fluid Esso JW3314 as an original lubricant. Its average price for a liter canister is 1,100 rubles.

Considering that for a partial replacement you will need about 3 liters, and for a complete replacement - 2 times more, then this procedure can significantly affect the wallet of the owner of the Daewoo Matiz. Another problem that a car enthusiast may have is the difficulty of purchasing this product. The original lubricant is not always available, and it is often not possible to search for it in all the stores in the city or wait for an order from an online market.

Analogs

Any original can be replaced with similar products. The quality is not lost. It is only important to choose a gear lubricant with the same properties. As analogues for Daewoo Matiz, it is recommended to use liquids of the Dexron II or Dexron III class. The most popular samples are shown in the table below.

The use of analog oil when replacing it on a Daewoo Matiz automatic transmission does not reduce the performance of the unit. Mixing different types of transmission fluids is permissible if they belong to the same tolerance class and are similar in composition.

Test No. 3

Let's remember driving school and play manual transmission on an automatic machine.

  1. Press the “OverDrive” button on the selector, the “O/D OFF” sign will light up on the instrument panel.
  2. Let’s start driving by moving the lever to the “L” position, smoothly raising the engine speed while driving until the car begins to buzz diligently and ask for the next gear (tachometer value is around 3000 rpm).
  3. Let's move the lever to position 2 and raise the speed, resolving the desire of the gearbox by switching to “D4”.
  4. And for the last time, having gained a buzzing speed, we press the button on the selector, allowing the Matiz to rush at high speed.

Did the gears shift as if someone was holding the car by the rear bumper and letting go as you moved the lever? However, no irritating factors were found. Great, last road test left!

Transmission oil change interval

The manufacturer of Daewoo Matiz did not indicate the replacement interval for the “transmission” in the automatic transmission, implying the use of the initial lubricant throughout the entire service life of the car. This option is only possible when operating under ideal conditions. In Russia, with its weather conditions and poor quality road surfaces, it is impossible to create such conditions.

In order for gear shifts to be carried out without interruptions, it is necessary to control the quality of the oil and its timely replacement with the Daewoo Matiz automatic transmission. Experienced car enthusiasts recommend updating the transmission fluid after every 60 - 70 thousand kilometers of travel. This interval will allow you to maintain the functionality of the gearbox on the Daewoo Matiz for many years without the need for repairs.

Test No. 4

It is aimed at checking the aggressiveness of the automatic transmission.

  1. We accelerate the car to 50 km/h, then quickly press the gas pedal all the way, at this moment the automatic transmission will lower the gear, and you will feel a gentle push forward.
  2. Didn't have time to understand what happened? Then, from 50 km/h, start increasing the speed, and then press the “OverDrive” button.

Acceleration obtained - excellent, test passed!

Test No. 5

And now the last of the proposed tests:

  1. Let's park the car on a level surface and open the hood, leaving the engine on.
  2. It's time to look at the transmission fluid (gearbox oil). All you need: a clean white rag.
  3. Let's take out the gearbox dipstick (in the engine compartment, there are two dipsticks and you don't need the one that is used to check the oil in the engine) and wipe it with a cloth. Notice the color the liquid left on the fabric. The lighter and more pronounced the red tint of the oil, the more resource the fluid has left for lubricating and preserving automatic transmission elements. If there are still small particles in the stain on the rag, if the stain is dark brown or black, it means that the fluid life is short and further use can lead to an accident in the unit.
  4. Let’s insert the dipstick back into the guide tube, sit in the driver’s seat and, at intervals of 3 seconds, from gear “L”, alternately move the selector to the “P” value, and then remove the dipstick for control measurements of the oil level. The lower part of the dipstick should be wetted with transmission fluid, the wetting limit indicates the current level, which is between the “min” and “max” values (ideally, not lower than the middle of the segment between the marks).

If the level is abnormal, add oil or get rid of excess.

Oil level dipstick

If, based on the test results, you think that the car behaved uncharacteristically, shifting gears was accompanied by unpleasant sounds and constant sharp jolts, or the automatic delayed shifting gears, going through the gears to decide which gear would go next, the gearbox needs help.

Effective help is to replace the transmission fluid. The manufacturer claims that the automatic transmission oil does not require replacement and is designed for the entire life of the vehicle, but who should you believe more, the facts or the words of the manufacturer?

Where can I buy?

You can purchase spare parts and working fluids HERE . The online store offers a large selection of high-quality automotive products.

You can buy products for Daewoo cars at an affordable price. The price for oil is about 6,000 tenge.

Where to do it?

Motorists who were unable to improve the technical condition of their car on their own can do so HERE . Professionals will quickly inspect the car and carry out quality repairs.

We have a Daewoo Matiz car, produced in 2011, with a 0.8 liter engine, for scheduled maintenance, on which it is necessary to change the oil in the manual transmission. We will show you visual photo and video instructions on how to do this procedure quickly and correctly, with your own hands.

We raise the car and remove the protection. We do not completely unscrew the drain plug using a 3/8 tetrahedron:

We set up a container in advance where the used oil will drain. Then we unscrew the filler plug, it is located above the drive on top, we use a 24mm socket:

Now you can completely unscrew the drain plug, the oil will flow out smoothly and without splashing. After the last drops have drained, tighten the drain plug. Be sure to wash off oil leaks from the box; this is best done with carburetor cleaner.

We insert a hose into the filler hole, take it out under the hood and put a funnel on it, we will fill it with ZIG 75w85 GL-4 oil, order number 132626.

We poured 2 liters and 100 grams. We tighten the filler plug.

Fluid replacement

This problem can be solved simply: believe in your strength, be patient and do not give in to circumstances, your Daewoo Matiz needs you, and you will not let it down!

Choice

On the dipstick, besides the level marks, were there any other symbols? If there were, then this is the type of oil recommended by the manufacturer, or your dipstick is scratched. The manufacturer’s website doesn’t say anything about ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid), the operating instructions say “esso jws 3314”, but we recommend:

  • DEXRON II or III from any manufacturer;
  • MERCON M;
  • CASTROL TLX 988D;
  • RAVENOL.

Let's tell you a secret: all oils are good, choose according to your taste! Be guided by oil tolerances, cost and popularity of the brand; the most advertised oils are often counterfeited by scammers. We recommend purchasing “Dextron III”, in a volume of 5 liters, from a trusted seller and inspecting the purchase before paying.

Manufacturer's recommendations

the recommended oil “ESSO JWS 3314” was indicated on the dipstick. Most often, drivers do not take this recommendation into account. It is best to choose the products presented above. But this oil also works well and shows good results when working in a Matiz automatic transmission. The manufacturer also recommends following the standards that are checked with a probe. But this is already a public fact that every driver follows, regardless of the model of his car.

A really worthwhile tip is to completely change the lubricant. It is produced to completely displace the old used one and replace it with a new one. This helps improve transmission performance and restore performance to values close to factory specifications. You just need to take into account that for the complete change procedure you will need an oil cooler. The manufacturer does not supply it with the car. In car repair shops, prices are rising every year, and a radiator is purchased once for the entire time.

Tools and accessories

To change the gearbox oil you will need:

  • ring wrenches or ratchet wrenches with 8 and 10 mm heads, as well as an adapter with a square section (square slot, Robertson slot) with a side of 3/8 inch (9.5 mm);
  • a funnel with a narrow neck, a guide for the tube;
  • two canisters with a capacity of 5 liters each;
  • transmission fluid 5 liters (automatic transmission oil we purchased);
  • fabric, lint-free cleaning cloths and work clothes;
  • automatic transmission filter - must be purchased in advance;
  • Automatic transmission pan gasket - also purchased in advance.

And a little about the author’s secrets

My life is not only connected with cars, but with repairs and maintenance. But I also have hobbies like all men. My hobby is fishing.

I started a personal blog in which I share my experience. I try a lot of things, different methods and methods to increase my catch. If interested, you can read it. Nothing extra, just my personal experience.

On a Daewoo Matiz car it is necessary to change the transmission oil as part of maintenance. Drivers can perform the procedure themselves, having prepared for this in advance. Motorists will need to prepare automotive tools and new manual transmission oil.

To carry out the work yourself, you need to familiarize yourself with how to pour oil into a Daewoo Matiz box .

The lack of professional assistance can negatively affect the result of the work if car owners are inattentive or do not follow the instructions.

Replacement process

  1. We drive the car after a five-kilometer trip onto an overpass, inspection hole, or jack up the car ourselves, using all possible precautions.
  2. Unscrew the crankcase protection.
  3. Using a ratchet wrench with an adapter, unscrew the drain plug and immediately place a five-liter bottle under a dark stream of oil.
  4. We wait until all the liquid has drained.
  5. Carefully remove the automatic transmission pan (everything is covered in oil), when unscrewing the bolts, trying to choose their diametrically opposite location to avoid skewing the pan.
  6. We wipe the edges to which the pan was screwed and maintain the sterile cleanliness of all internal parts of the automatic transmission. We carefully wipe the pan, the magnets attached to it, and the drain plug, which at the base contains a magnet that collects the products of the gearbox.
  7. We remove the old box filter and install a new one.
  8. Then we return the pan to its place with a new gasket, clean magnets in their places and bolt it around the perimeter through opposite threads.
  9. We tighten the cap and pour into an empty five-liter bottle as much new liquid as the old one poured out.
  10. We insert a funnel into the guide tube and pour oil from the bottle into the automatic transmission.
  11. Warm up the car with the engine idling for 20 minutes and check the level. Replacement completed successfully! Let's perform the above tests and evaluate the changes.

Recommendations

Super mechanics advise performing a so-called complete or 100% oil change in an automatic transmission, replacing the old oil with fresh oil. To do this, it is necessary to disconnect two pipes from the oil cooler, one for new oil, the other for used oil.

Then apply new oil under pressure, draining the old one from another pipe; the operation is carried out with the engine running, and therefore the automatic transmission oil pump. Two people work, one controls the oil flow, the other starts the engine.

This method really allows you to spill a lot of oil through the gearbox and expel a decent amount of waste, combustion products and other nasty things that come from nowhere. Have you already rushed to make a complete replacement? We have to disappoint you, Daewoo Matiz does not have an oil cooler for automatic transmission supplied by the manufacturer from the factory.

Another news is that it is impossible to drain all the used oil and waste products from the box at one time due to the extensive and deep network of oil lines, the torque converter and the design features of the automatic transmission! The mechanism will hold from 300 ml to 1 liter of transmission fluid with the most powerful compressor installation.

If the transmission fluid was thick and dirty before replacement, but the gearbox worked, even with minor flaws, then when replacing using the displacement method, there is a risk of clogging these same oil lines, which will lead to a serious accident. Without any additional effort, 3.5 liters of waste fluid is drained from the gearbox out of a total volume of 4.7 liters. This means that you can drain 74% of the dirty oil, and dilute the remaining 26% with fresh oil.

Thus, the operating conditions of the automatic transmission will gently but significantly improve. Having updated the condition of the working fluid by 66% and tested the behavior of the automatic transmission, upon subsequent replacement (say, after 1000 km), the oil will be in excellent condition. The likelihood that even before the replacement there was a mechanical failure is also high, and by replacing most of the oil, we will dispel doubts about the nature of the malfunction and save money.

To replace it in two stages, we will need 7 liters of liquid. About the same amount will need to be used in a car service, but you will have to pay for the service and guess about the quality of the work performed.

Even if our Jatco JF405E is not capricious to replacement with displacement, if the condition of the gearbox is unsatisfactory, we independently check how effective this procedure will be. And if the condition is satisfactory, we carry out preventive maintenance and increase the service life of the mechanism.

Under the hood of Matiz

How to carry out a shift in an automatic transmission

The design feature of the automatic transmission does not allow interference with its operation. But replacing a substance, without which the entire structure cannot work, is allowed and necessary. The transmission fluid can be changed completely or partially. As in the case of mechanics, the automatic transmission must be warmed up before performing work. Then drive the car onto the lift. For a partial replacement, simply drain the liquid by unscrewing the drain plug. The gearbox pan also needs to be removed. It is better to do this with an assistant so that the pallet does not tilt during removal. Drain off any remaining liquid and wipe the parts with a clean rag. Remove and clean the filter. If necessary, replace with a new one. Now, having assembled everything in reverse order, fill in new gear oil. The volume of liquid being poured is exactly as much as was drained.
