This summer there was another replenishment of the Russian automobile market. This time, the Russian car market has been replenished with the updated bestseller Skoda Rapid. This model was a huge success among its compatriots in its previous version, and in the updated generation it can even become a real bestseller. This car must be compared with its direct competitor, the Russian-made Lada Vesta. For the simple reason that these vehicles are in the budget segment, in the end you can choose which is better - the Skoda Rapid or the Lada Vesta, a model that is successful in the Russian market.

Comparison of technical characteristics
The first thing that is worth talking about in depth is the main technical characteristics of vehicles, since the bulk of modern car enthusiasts look specifically at the parameters and numbers of the car. These models boast the following indicators:
- the new Rapid is sold as a liftback, while Vesta is a sedan;
- both models belong to the Euro-5 environmental safety class;
- cars are equipped only with a front-wheel drive system;
- Only petrol modifications of vehicles are sold;
- the maximum speed of the Skoda Rapid is 184 km/h, the Lada Vesta is 175 km/h;
- fuel consumption in the combined cycle is 6 liters. for Rapid, 6.9 l. at Vesta;
- from zero to first hundred, the Czech liftback accelerates in 11.4 s, Vesta in 11.2 s;
- The Skoda Rapid car needs to be filled with AI-95 fuel, the Lada Vesta requires AI-92 gasoline.
Looking at these indicators, we can make an initial conclusion that the presented models are similar to each other. However, if you delve into the rest of the details, it becomes obvious that the new Skoda Rapid outperforms its competitor and does so in almost all respects.
Drive and gearbox
Today's competitors are exclusively front-wheel drive and can be equipped with manual or automatic transmission. There are no complaints about manual variable gearboxes (the exception is the “inherited” howl of the Russian-made VAZ manual transmission on Lada). If “mechanics” is not given to you, with all confidence, buy only a “Czech”. The Vesta's robotic gearbox cannot be compared with the DSG type transmission offered by VAG specifically for the 1.4 liter turbo engine. If the client prefers a “classic” gearbox, Skoda has provided this option by offering a 5-speed torque converter. Gears change quickly, so you don’t have to ride behind everyone else in traffic.
Engines and transmission
These cars do not differ as much in terms of units as it might seem at first glance, which is why it will be quite difficult to make a choice between a Skoda Rapid or Lada Vesta based only on the range of engines and available transmissions. Both models received two variants of power plants in the engine compartment in terms of volume. Most cars use naturally aspirated gasoline engines. However, unlike its Russian competitor, the Czech liftback can also be purchased in a charged version with a robotic gearbox and a turbocharged unit. As for transmissions, a slight advantage in the number of alternative options also remains with the Czech model.
The new Skoda Rapid entered the Russian automobile market with three main power units. In this case, we are talking about 1.6-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engines with output of 90 and 110 horsepower, as well as 155 Nm of torque. In addition, this car can be purchased with a small-displacement 1.4-liter turbocharged engine with a power of 125 horsepower and a thrust level of 200 N*m. As transmission options for its liftback, the Czech manufacturer offers a standard 5-speed manual gearbox or a modern 6-speed automatic transmission. Models equipped with a turbocharger engine are equipped only with a 7-speed DSG robotic gearbox.
The popular Russian sedan, which has been on the domestic market for five years, can be purchased with 1.6 and 1.8 liter engines. These are predominantly naturally aspirated gasoline engines with output of 106 and 123 horsepower, respectively, as well as 148 and 170 Nm of torque. For transmissions, the Russian manufacturer decided to use a traditional 5-speed manual gearbox on this model, as well as a robotic gearbox with 5 operating ranges. Like its direct competitor, the Russian model is equipped exclusively with a front-wheel drive system. In some individual versions, a modern CVT is installed on the car.
Some negative nuances of design solutions
In addition to a sufficient number of positive characteristics, both cars also have negative aspects.
For Skoda Rapid it is:
- the doorway of the front doors is small (inconvenient landing);
- the armrest of the driver's seat makes it difficult to access the handbrake lever;
- small accelerator pedal travel (less than 5 cm);
- the headliner is not secured well enough, and the height of the ceiling above the passenger row of seats is small (inconvenient for tall passengers);
- The angle of the rear window is large (the sun's rays warm the back of the head);
- significant width of the rear pillars (impaired visibility);
- fog lights are not recessed into the bumper (increased vulnerability of optics);
- no lock on the gas tank flap.
For Lada Vesta:
- very hard plastic front panel;
- the brake and gas pedals, even on the version with automatic transmission, are located very close to each other (when you press one pedal, the second one is touched);
- poor placement of the driver's armrest interferes with fastening the seat belt;
- rear door windows do not roll down completely;
- poor architecture of the instrument panel (some of the instrument readings are shown in small print or are not visible in the niche);
- the wheel size of 16 inches does not correspond to the status of a “budget” car;
- poor design of the hood lock (dirt flies from the fixation hole onto the engine).
Ride quality, maneuverability and handling
These cars, unfortunately, cannot boast of any cross-country ability, for the simple reason that we are talking about urban models, focused primarily on movement in the city and on the highway. Moreover, the vehicles are not suitable for off-road use, as they are equipped exclusively with front-wheel drive and also cannot boast of high ground clearance. You should also not forget about the weight, which is minimal for these cars, which will only allow you to deal with some small obstacles on rough terrain. At the same time, if you end up off-road, you obviously won’t be able to do without outside help. The clearance of the Czech liftback is 170 mm, and that of the Russian sedan is 178 mm.
The new Skoda Rapid car can pleasantly please its owner with excellent handling and excellent driving performance. This model has good dynamics and maneuverability. When traveling in this car, you get the feeling that you are driving a higher class vehicle. Of course, the stiffness of the suspension is felt, but not as much as it was in the previous generation. This model is equipped with independent spring suspension at the front, as well as anti-roll bars and ventilated disc brakes on the front axle. As for the rear, there is a semi-independent spring system, as well as drum or disc mechanisms, depending on the configuration.
The Russian car Lada Vesta is inferior to its direct competitor in this part of the comparison, although not as much as expected. In practice, this is a good model with acceptable handling and adequate driving performance. The car is dynamic and nimble, which makes it easy to maneuver in traffic. The suspension in this model is quite stiff, which is why all the bumps on the road will be felt in the cabin. Russian manufacturers equipped the car with independent MacPherson spring suspension at the front with ventilated disc brakes. At the rear there is a semi-independent spring system, as well as drum brakes.
Chassis
Ground clearance (178 - 170 mm) - +8 mm in favor of the Volga car. There are no innovations at the front - only traditional MacPherson struts. A semi-independent beam is quite reasonably located at the rear (surprisingly, even in the configuration for a “supercharged” engine, an independent multi-link is not offered). “Czech” has a minimum of 14 wheels, the Lada is shod with 15 wheels.
Thanks to the suspension tuners, the Rapid seems more collected, but cannot boast of ride comfort in most of the Russian Federation; sometimes shock absorber breakdowns occur in the product of the Czech brand. Vesta steers a little worse, although on washboard-type roads it’s more pleasant to be inside its cabin.
Comparison of configurations and prices
In order to choose which is better - Skoda Rapid or Lada Vesta, you must definitely pay attention to the cost of the vehicles, as well as the equipment provided by the manufacturer. If we look at prices, then the Russian model is the undisputed leader. In addition, when purchasing a domestic car, you can count on numerous discounts and even government support. As for the Czech liftback, this car has a higher price tag, but at the same time boasts rich technical equipment and numerous options that are definitely not found in a domestic car. In particular, this applies to numerous electronic assistants and assistants, which make the trip safer and more comfortable for the driver and passengers.
At the moment, potential buyers can purchase the new Skoda Rapid, which recently entered the domestic car market, for 792,000 - 1,171,000 rubles. The price is quite high, but you can overpay for this, since upon purchase the motorist receives a beautiful, stylish car with rich technical equipment, even in the most budget configuration. In the initial version, the car is equipped with air conditioning, tire pressure sensors, numerous electronic assistants, audio preparation, as well as a standard 12V socket. More expensive trim levels include keyless entry, LED optics, fog lights and DRLs, remote engine start, cruise control, and climate control.

As for the Russian Lada Vesta model, it is a noticeably more affordable model in its class. The cost of a budget sedan currently varies from 653,900 to 973,900 rubles. Of course, for some this difference is not so significant, and then the choice is obvious. The car is sold in the country in several basic trim levels, as well as in extended versions. In the basic version, it is almost completely empty and is distinguished only by a number of electronic assistants. In more expensive versions, good technical equipment is added to the sedan, including climate control, cruise control, parking sensors, a rear view camera, as well as a cooled glove box and other functions.

When it comes to the cost of car maintenance, many car enthusiasts will naively assume that the Russian model will cost them less to maintain. Of course, this is actually true, however, the difference is not as significant as it might seem at first glance. This is due to the fact that the Skoda Rapid is a real bestseller in the previous generation, and a vehicle aimed primarily at the middle class of motorists. If we talk about regular fuel costs, then Lada Vesta is somewhat ahead of its competitor, since this sedan can be refueled with AI-92 fuel, which currently costs an order of magnitude cheaper than gasoline with a higher octane number. At the same time, in terms of efficiency, the Skoda Rapid outperforms its rival, which is why the difference is not so noticeable with minimal mileage.
Story
The popular subcompact Skoda Rapid car was first put on public display in the fall of 2012 in Paris. It was practically no different from the concept presented a year earlier. The Russian version of Rapid, which, by the way, is fully adapted to domestic road conditions, debuted in 2014. It is noteworthy that in 2012 the car was recognized as the best in terms of safety in the segment. It is worth noting that in the summer of 2012, the developers also presented a redesigned version of the car, called the Seat Toledo.
In the fall of 2015, the Lada Vesta car was presented, which replaced the Lada Priora. As company representatives note, 6.5 billion rubles were spent on the development and design of the model, which automatically made Vesta one of the most expensive projects in the Russian automotive industry. In terms of safety, Lada Vesta is one of the best in terms of safety, and confidently surpasses models such as Solaris and Focus. Interestingly, Vesta was the first to receive the updated Lada logo.
Which is better in terms of career success? Today it is, of course, a Czech car.
Appearance and dimensions
Another point that simply cannot be ignored when comparing Skoda Rapid and Lada Vesta is the appearance of budget models. Here, even one glance is enough to understand that the Czech liftback stands out noticeably against the background of its competitor. The design of the Russian car can already be called outdated. In addition, there is a proprietary stamping on the body of this car, which spoils the favorable impression of its appearance. In general, the domestic car does not look bad, however, its competitor in the form of the Skoda Rapid is noticeably more beautiful, as it has characteristic narrowed head optics, a large radiator grille, and also a simply huge air intake on the front bumper. In general, this model is endowed with somewhat aggressive contours, which is why many modern motorists will choose it without much hesitation.
If we talk about the sizes of these vehicles, they did not differ as significantly as it might seem at first glance. Cars have the following dimensions:
- length for Skoda 4,485 mm, for Lada 4,410 mm;
- the width of the Rapid is 1,706 mm, that of the Vesta is 1,764 mm;
- the height of the Czech model is 1,475 mm, that of the Russian car is 1,497 mm;
- Vesta's wheelbase is 2635 mm, Rapid's is 2,602 mm;
- the curb weight of the Russian model is 1,230 kg, that of the Czech car is 1,195 kg.
It is worth noting that upon visual inspection of vehicles standing nearby, the difference in numbers is practically unnoticeable, except perhaps in terms of height, since the ground clearance of the Lada Vesta is slightly higher.
Exterior
Externally, there are completely different approaches to design. AvtoVAZ followed the path of an aggressive and cocky style. The chrome strips in the front of Vesta emphasize the grin of the faceted headlights and radiator grille, which turns into a massive air intake. Round foglights complete the look.
Just a few years ago no one would have thought of such an appearance for Lad.
From the side, Lada looks no less impressive. Of course, some believe that the signature X-shaped understamping makes the car look less long, which is enhanced by the impression of large wheel arches and high ground clearance, but overall the design from Steve Mattin and his team is impressive. Muscular shapes, stylish rims, wedge-shaped profile do their job.
From the side, Vesta may seem short, but this is a visual deception.
And the food was frankly a success. Massive, but not heavy, it harmoniously completes the composition of the car. The feet, with their chopped outlines, combine well with the chrome on the trunk lid and the powerful bumper.

The Skoda Rapid, made in the corporate style of Volkswagen, looks different. Here there is extreme precision and, at times, even outright pedantry of the creators. But this only emphasizes becoming a car.
Smooth lines, traditional grille louvers, contoured optics and huge, rectangular fog lights located on the sides of the air intake are in perfect harmony.
The German corporate style has not bypassed the Skoda Rapid.
Thread gaps between parts, straight lines of doors and wings, branded rims. Indeed, the “little brother” of the Octavia A7 fills the motto with special meaning. Rapid is a vivid example when simplicity can be the most advantageous option.

The same applies to the rear, with its almost square lights, large bumper and sharp transitions of the luggage compartment lid, decorated with branded emblems and nameplates.
From behind the car looks no less advantageous.
Salon and trunk
Another extremely important point, which you simply cannot do without if you need to make a full comparison. In this case, we are talking about the arrangement of the interiors of these cars. It is here that it is not so easy to say unequivocally that the Skoda Rapid is better, for the simple reason that the Russian model also received a good and stylish interior decoration. However, if we talk about the manufacturability of the arrangement, then, of course, the advantage goes to the Czech car, since the manufacturer Skoda decided to use all its most advanced and high-tech developments for this liftback. In addition, this car stands out for its practicality.
As mentioned earlier, the Skoda Rapid is a car that will delight its owner not only with rich technical equipment and stylish interior design, but also with practicality. In this model, all the necessary controls are located strictly in their places, there are a number of innovations compared to its predecessor, and in addition, the free space has noticeably increased. In the production of cars, only high-quality and quite expensive materials are used, which is noticeable at first glance. Among the features of the car, it is worth highlighting the large screen of the multimedia system, as well as a small but stylish display in the center of the dashboard. Also of particular interest are the comfortable multifunction steering wheel and stylish gearshift lever. Inside the liftback, predominantly dark shades predominate, which prevents the driver from getting tired during the trip due to the contrast.
As for the Russian model, there is also a practical arrangement of the main control parts, there is a sufficient amount of free space, and there are also a lot of high-tech elements. However, as for the quality of finishing, it leaves much to be desired. In terms of design and design, this car is seriously inferior to its more modern competitor. The large gearshift lever looks out of place. The lower part of the central panel hangs unnaturally over the tunnel. Among the advantages are the successful placement of the multimedia system, as well as an interesting instrument panel.
If we talk about the luggage capacity of these 5-seater vehicles, then it is clearly clear that the Czech model has a clear superiority here, for the simple reason that it is produced in a liftback body. The trunk of the Skoda Rapid holds 50 liters more. General figures 530 l. Skoda Rapid has 480 hp. at Lada Vesta. At the same time, in a Czech car you can significantly expand the space if you fold the rear row of passenger seats. In this case, the trunk volume reaches 1,460 liters.
Interior
Here the approach is the same as in the case of appearance. The LADA Vesta interior is designed in a new style. A dashboard with spectacular wells, a grippy 3-spoke steering wheel, a protruding center console with a large screen and thoughtful ergonomics. All this, coupled with new seats with high-quality lateral support and good visibility, is in sharp contrast with other AvtoVAZ products.
Lada Vesta is the case when the interior completely matches the exterior.
The back row of the Lada Vesta is free and comfortable. Three headrests allow room for three passengers, and the width of the car guarantees shoulder room. And your legs don’t rest on the front seats. In a word, the designers did a truly amazing job on the interior of the Lada Vesta!

The Rapid's salon is different. In him, as in his appearance, correctness and German character shine through. In fact, the only thing missing for a complete ambiance is a table lamp - with it you could feel like you’re in an office.

The driver's seat is organized extremely competently. A standard readable dashboard, straight lines in the dashboard, a very comfortable steering wheel, a good combination of colors in the decoration and an arrangement of controls that allows you to use everything with your eyes closed - that’s what the Rapid’s interior is all about. And, most importantly, all this “correctness” is not devoid of aristocracy and taste!
Looking for flaws in all this splendor is a thankless task.

Even if we fully take into account all the advantages of the Czech new product, it is quite difficult to unequivocally answer the question of which of the presented cars is better, for the simple reason that the domestic car also has some trump cards. In particular, it is the price, which for many modern motorists becomes the main factor in the process of choosing the most suitable vehicle. If we talk about the Skoda Rapid, then this model has advantages in appearance, technical equipment, and also in the power unit.

The trunk volume of the Skoda Rapid is 530 liters. If you fold down the rear seats, it increases. Lada Vesta loses here - its value is 480 hp. But if the Rapid's trunk is properly loaded, the car goes into a skid when cornering.

Even if not in its “pure” form, you can use the difference to buy a package you like with comfortable functions. Both versions are well equipped and the amount of equipment corresponds to the stated price.
The choice of equipment is not the only difficulty. The buyer will have to decide on a suitable engine, of which there are plenty. Most of the engine range is occupied by naturally aspirated engines, but Skoda also received the only turbocharged one. For connoisseurs of speed, Lada has prepared a special “charged” sedan with the Sport index.
Skoda will be chosen by connoisseurs of calm design and classic performance. The Russian model is made in a corporate style with an abundance of X-shaped stampings and elements. Designer finds are more to the liking of the younger generation, while the older generation values reliability and confidence in high quality more. Low consumption and compact dimensions are ideal companions for urban use, but the models also show their advantage on the highway. Both the sedan and the liftback are well equipped. The list includes numerous security systems that are found in high-end models. It is noteworthy that before the appearance of the Russian sedan, many experts were skeptical about quality. However, the engineers managed to dispel the boring stereotype about the low quality of elements and assembly. Practice proves that breakdowns of modern Vesta are a rare occurrence. Manufacturers did not skimp on security systems either. Even in a minimal design, they are enough to minimize the consequences in the event of an accident. Comfort systems are brighter and more noticeable in the highest trim levels, which is understandable given the significant increase in price.
