One of the features of expensive cars is the presence of an engine start/stop button instead of the usual ignition key. AVTOVAZ does not yet provide the “Start the engine with a button” option, but any owner of a Lada car can modify the design with their own hands.

The ignition switch can be:

Assembly and installation of an engine starting system with a button
The first stage is preparing the place for mounting the Start-Stop Engine button. Some car enthusiasts prefer installing a mechanism instead of a standard ignition switch, others mount the part on the front panel or on the other side of the steering column. If you intend to leave the ignition switch in its original place, we recommend that you disguise it with a suitable cap. Do not forget that the button usually has LED backlighting, so it is better to mount it so that it does not blind you in the dark.
Steering wheel unlock options
When we remove the key from the lock, the steering wheel is locked, that is, fixed with a spring-loaded metal pin. In order to operate the car normally after installing the “Start/Stop” button, it is necessary to remove this function. There are two ways to do this.
The first, and from our point of view, the most preferable method:
- order a duplicate ignition key;
- insert it into the lock and make a mark at a level of 1÷1.5 mm above the surface level;
- take out the key and saw off the “excess” in accordance with the mark;
- insert the “piece” into the lock and use pliers to turn it to position 2 (now the steering wheel is unlocked);
- We leave a piece of the key in the lock until the need arises to return to the standard ignition circuit.
The second way to get rid of the steering wheel lock is to completely remove the ignition switch. In the resulting hole we either mount the “Start/Stop” button or install a plastic plug of a suitable size. The main disadvantage of this method is that it will no longer be possible to quickly “return” to the standard circuit of turning the car engine on/off using a key.

The electronic ignition switch is available in the following configurations:

How to bypass the standard immobilizer
Many modern car models are equipped with an anti-theft device such as an immobilizer. Manufacturers equip the vehicle with a similar standard device already at the factory. The reading device is usually installed in the ignition switch, and the control mark in the key. If the security guard is not dismantled, then a key will be needed to deactivate the security mode. If you decide to remove the lock, then you need to disassemble it, find the immobilizer reader and move it to a suitable location. However, in order to start the engine with the Start/Stop button, you will still have to have the key with you.
For information! Some manufacturers, in addition to the universal “Star/Stop” kits, produce special devices for temporarily disabling (bypassing) the standard immobilizer.

Any car tuning has both pros and cons. Among the advantages of controlling the start/stop of the engine using the “Start/Stop” button, one can note only a slight increase in comfort and minimal time savings. And here are the disadvantages (where would we be without them):
- You will still have to carry the key with you. Firstly, it may be needed to simply open the car if the battery is dead and the electromagnetic door activators do not work (this is especially true at significant sub-zero temperatures). Secondly, in many modern cars the standard immobilizer mark is located in the key, so you can start the engine only if it is in close proximity to the reader.
- The installation of pre-heating devices and alarm systems becomes more complicated (due to changes in the standard electrical circuit of the car).

Installation and connection sequence:
- Remove the ignition switch by removing the four screws using a screwdriver.
- Disassemble and remove the steering lock mechanism.
- Disconnect connectors.
- Disassemble the contact group housing and remove the immobilizer antenna.
- Install the engine start button in the selected location.
- Solder the wires according to the diagram, insulating them with heat shrink. Remove unnecessary wires from the block.
- Install everything in reverse order.
- Connect the green wire to the brake block (contact No. 4, in our situation - red). A “+” should appear on this contact when you press the brake pedal.
Checking the system operation:
- Initially the button is inactive;
- To unlock, you need to bring the key fob from the kit to the reader (a double signal should sound);
- If there is no button press within 15 seconds, automatic blocking will occur (a single signal will sound);
- after unlocking, the first press turns on ACC (in our situation it is not used), the second press turns on the ignition, the third turns off the system (if you do not first press the brake pedal);
- With the brake pedal pressed, pressing the button a third time will start the engine;
