It's no secret that in its standard, that is, in serial form, the engine does not develop all the power it is capable of. You can configure the firmware in a new way, but you won’t be able to significantly change the load curve without reducing the environmental class. You can buy a "racing camshaft" to install in place of the stock one. But then the firmware will have to be changed to accommodate the new phases... Let's consider what happens if we use only accessible tuning methods. Let's say right away that on the VAZ-2114 hatchback the increase in power can be 20% or even 25%, and we are talking about only 8 valves. There is no need to bore the valve channels.
Let's leave illusions in the past, and for this we watch one video.
How to increase the power of an 8 valve VAZ 2114 engine with your own hands
Many young car enthusiasts are thinking about how to increase the power of an 8-valve VAZ 2114 engine with their own hands.
They do this because most often they buy a car with a weak engine due to lack of money. They are counting on increasing capacity. Tuning cannot be done on some old domestic engines. But the VAZ 2114 8-valve is suitable for tuning. Therefore, next we will consider what can be done with the engine to increase its power.
Running in a diesel car
There are no big differences in the running-in procedure for gasoline and diesel cars. To reduce friction in the engine, there is a lubrication system. The oil pump pumps up the required pressure, which drives engine oil through the oil channels and rubbing parts. A film of oil is created between them, popularly called an oil wedge.
It is necessary to carry out the diesel engine break-in procedure with an emphasis on the optimal pressure created in the lubrication system and at the same time minimizing the load. Effective pressure is considered when the crankshaft rotation speed is 1300 rpm. Travel at lower engine speeds is not recommended.
- The mileage of the first 1000 km is the most critical when running in a diesel engine.
- Before driving, warm up the engine to 30 degrees. Next, the diesel itself will warm up while driving.
- You should not engage a gear higher than second with a manual transmission. On an automatic transmission, it is better to block the transition beyond the second gear.
- Engine speed must be maintained within 1500 rpm.
- After warming up, you can increase the speed, but not higher than 4th gear. When running in, do not overload the engine.
- It is better to test the car outside the city, since you will not need to stand at traffic lights and brake frequently.
- When driving on a straight road, you can engage fourth gear and move at a speed not exceeding 80 km per hour. When climbing, it is better to switch to a lower gear.
It is recommended to stop at least 2 times during one trip and turn off the engine, allow it to cool, check the oil and coolant levels. If possible, check the oil in the automatic transmission. After checking the oil, do not close the hood yet, start the engine and listen to the sound of its operation, test the operation of the electrical equipment. Such checks must be carried out before a mileage of 1000 km.
This is the lowest mileage for running a diesel engine. At this time, you must strictly follow all the rules. Then you can gradually increase the load. Qualified experts express the opinion that the best mileage for running in a diesel and gasoline engine is 10 thousand km. Although some craftsmen claim that the process of grinding in parts ends only after a mileage of 30 thousand km.

General information about the VAZ 2114 engine
The VAZ manufacturer has released three models of the 2114 engine. These are:
- A power unit with a volume of one and a half liters and 8 valves.
- A power unit with a volume of 1.6 liters with the same number of valves as the first.
- And a sixteen-valve engine with a volume of 1.6 liters.
On the roads you can most often see a car with a second modification engine. However, it is distinguished from the first model in terms of power by the added four horses. It's not that much.
Before a major overhaul, the VAZ 2114 engine can run 150 thousand kilometers. And this is with respect to it, when changing filters and oil once a year. Many people do not wait for major repairs and do tuning earlier. Other car enthusiasts do tuning immediately after purchase.
Attention! But tuning is different from tuning. Many people think that budget tuning will help increase power without spending large amounts of money. However, there is no such word as budget tuning. In any case, you will have to buy a turbine to increase the engine power. And this is expensive.
Cylinder block boring
This option involves expanding the diameter of the cylinders and installing pistons of larger diameter, which in turn also increases the working volume. Any major overhaul, a kind of small tuning, in the direction of increasing volume. With the right approach, and hands growing from the right place, they can be bored up to 84 mm. Further boring is dangerous, casting defects may appear, and then you can go for a new block. But there are also limitations and disadvantages here.
A significant reduction in the thickness of the cylinder walls will, in any case, lead to a small but reduced service life of the cylinder block. The thermal load also increases; in other words, thin walls will heat up much faster.
How to increase engine power
To make the correct engine tuning, you need to choose one of several ways to modify the power unit. There are four types of engine modifications that will not cause harm to the latter and will not reduce the life of the engine.
- cylinder boring;
- installation of a new air filter device;
- turbine installation;
- chip tuning or electronic modification of the engine's brains.
You also need to take into account that as the engine power increases, fuel consumption will also increase. Therefore, before you decide to tune your engine, think about whether you need increased fuel consumption.
Increasing the volume of engine chambers
Let's consider the first method of engine tuning - increasing power by increasing the volume of the combustion chamber. To do this, the diameter of the cylinders is bored, and the surface is carefully ground to a mirror finish. The procedure is carried out on a special machine.
They replace regular pistons with forged ones, and the rings with lighter ones. Replace the connecting rods that connect them to the crankshaft.
Experienced mechanics recommend replacing oil injectors if forged pistons are installed. This is necessary for good oil cooling to occur. Since old injectors become unsuitable for further operation.
Installing a new air filter
To properly tune the engine, install an intake filter with reduced aerodynamic resistance. This ensures that air enters the mixer with the least effort. As a result, power increases by four horses.
Attention! In this case, fuel consumption is reduced, which has a beneficial effect on the car owner’s wallet.
Tuning by installing a new air filter is done as follows:
- Grind the internal intake channels.
- They install receivers.
- Change the throttle valve to a new one with a larger diameter.
A direct-flow muffler is installed at the exhaust. All work is carried out in service centers. Under no circumstances should boring channels be carried out in a garage.
Air intake
Now let's go to the hardware store. We bought a corrugation with a diameter of 80 mm and a silicone hose with a diameter of 16 mm. Let's make a cold intake system. Unscrew the standard air filter. We put the corrugation on the lower pipe and tighten it with a clamp. We pull it out from below and make a cold air intake from the street. We cut off the excess corrugation. Now we collect everything, put the air filter in place.
Some skeptics say that this way you can snatch the water hammer during the rain. Now the cold air intake is located low, you can drive into a puddle and scoop up water. But this can be easily avoided. It is necessary to make drainage holes at the lower points of the corrugation.
Basic engine malfunctions
All modifications of VAZ-2114 engines have a number of characteristic breakdowns. The most common are:
- Floating engine speed at idle. Most often, this problem occurred on new cars and was corrected under warranty. The cause is most often a malfunction of the throttle position sensor, idle speed control or vacuum unit.
- The same reasons lead to the car stalling while driving. An additional problem in this case is the incorrect operation of the mass air flow sensor.
- During operation, the power unit froze. First you need to measure the compression in the cylinders; if it is low in one of them, the cause is burnt valves or a head. With the same difference in compression, the problems are hidden in the valve pressure settings or their gasket. If there are no deviations, then you need to check the ignition module.
- Failure to heat up to operating temperature (from 87 to 103 degrees) is due to a faulty thermostat.
- Engine noise occurs due to unadjusted valves. If it intensifies when you press on the gas, then you need to check the connecting rod bearings or cylinder pistons.
If it seems to you that the power plant has lost power, then you should look for other symptoms. They are the ones who will tell you why it does not develop speed and does not meet the stated characteristics.
Crankcase ventilation
Let's do one more thing. There are small and large crankcase ventilation. The big one works when the throttle opens and begins to suck out crankcase gases. But they enter the engine already burned, gases escape from the pistons. With such ventilation, the engine is still clean, since unpleasant gases are sucked out. We will do the crankcase ventilation the same way we did it the old fashioned way.
How to make a flying motorcycle with your own hands.
You just need to vent the gases down under the car so that they don’t go into the cabin, otherwise it will stink. Then the engine will always consume fresh fuel mixture. Our car is ready.
The main mistakes made when tuning
Many people try to add power to the engine, but at the same time make typical mistakes. The leading ones among them are:
- installation of cutters in garage conditions (this work requires high precision);
- use of unnecessary and expensive spare parts;
- lack of suitable firmware for a sports camshaft or other elements.
Before buying expensive spare parts, you should pay attention to the recommendations of the specialists. They created a list of useless components:
- A receiver with an increased volume is good only at medium and high speeds, but for work in the range from 1000 to 2500 rpm, a standard spare part is more preferable.
- A zero filter, called a “chandelier,” is a fairly useful addition, but you will have to constantly clean it with special chemical compounds. This will increase the cost of maintaining the car.
- A throttle valve of increased diameter does not increase power too much, since the engine always has enough air.

Tuning an injector with 8 valves
To increase power from 77 to 96 horsepower of the very first engine of the VAZ-2111 model, you need to do:
- boring valve seats along the inner diameter;
- boring the channel necks for installing duralumin plates and loosening the springs by 1.5 millimeters;
- replacing standard valves with lightweight ones;
- recessing of guide bushings from special brass;
- installation of a split timing gear;
- use of imported valve cotters;
- installation of a narrow-phase shaft.
The tuning shaft has an inlet of 70 degrees and an outlet of 66. Its opening angles are 250 and 246 degrees, respectively. After completing the work, it is necessary to install the engineering firmware and carefully configure the motor parameters. Only in this case, after all sensors are turned on, the engine will start working normally.
It is better to use a split gear on non-plug-in motors. For installation, it is necessary to carry out the work in almost the same way as when replacing the timing belt, that is, apply marks, disassemble the mechanism, and align the crankshaft. After installing the new gear, pay attention to the 4th cylinder. If the valves in it are not open to the maximum, in this case you will need to loosen the outer screws and adjust the camshaft, after which you need to tighten the fasteners.
Crankshaft replacement
The top and bottom dead centers of the piston determine the working volume of the cylinder. If you replace the standard crankshaft with another one, with a larger piston stroke, you will get an increase in volume. The crankshaft for VAZ engines of the 21083 family comes with the piston stroke:
The standard piston stroke on the VAZ 21083 engine is 71 mm. The most common way to increase the displacement to 1600 cm3 is to install a crankshaft with a stroke of 74.8 or 75.6. By increasing the piston stroke, it is also necessary to replace or significantly modify the existing ones. Here, too, there are several ways to solve the problem.
You can install pistons with an offset pin hole, or use shorter connecting rods. The most common options include installing special forged pistons under the selected crankshaft, or removing excess metal from existing cylinders. One of the disadvantages is the rapid wear of the connecting rod and piston group. This happens due to the fact that due to an increase in the piston stroke, the operating angles of the connecting rod change, which means that the lateral pressure on the cylinder walls increases.
It is also worth adding that at high speeds, the standard intake and exhaust systems will not be able to cope fully. Filling the cylinders will become difficult, which will inevitably lead to a loss of power. This drawback can easily be attributed to the next method of increasing engine displacement.
Expert commentary
Spare parts for VAZ engines are in good demand. This is why there is such a high proportion of substandard spare parts on sale. Such parts come from three sources. The first is cooperative spare parts: their use is especially dangerous. For example, the service life of timing belts can be only a few tens of engine hours. The second source is still encountered defects from the official supplier. This is a spare part that did not pass VAZ technical control, but went on sale. Such parts and components destroy buyers’ faith in the reliability of VAZ cars. Finally, the third source is remanufactured engine parts. But these are becoming less and less common.
