Threshold replacement

  • Floor;
  • Lower areas of doors and pillars;
  • Welding and joining areas.

Increasing body rigidity

It is possible to strengthen the body of a VAZ-2106 by installing special spacers (available for sale) on the front and rear parts of the car. It is also possible to install only on the front part, due to the complexity of mounting on the rear.

Working with the bottom

If the bottom requires repair, then this cannot be delayed. Since corrosion can affect even fresh metal. Of course, such work can be entrusted to a professional, but there is not always money for this. There are two ways here: welding the bottom or laying sheets of iron with additional coating with mastic.

If you still decide to go with the second option, then you need to buy several sheets of iron (galvanized), special mastic and fastening materials. Then prepare the car for this. We remove everything unnecessary from the car interior (seats, insulation). Then we clean everything down to the hardware. And we begin to actually transform the bottom. To do this, you need to remove the rust and apply new sheets (prepared to size) below and above. Be sure to coat everything thickly with mastic. We fasten the iron with self-tapping screws. It is recommended to apply iron sheets in several layers, each one treated with mastic. Upon completion of the work, we restore the completeness of the interior in the reverse order. Body work

Concept

How do you come to the point where one day you decide: “Let my car be rusty from head to toe”? There are many ways. You can, for example, buy a Lada with your last 10 thousand, then lose your job, make friends with street alcoholics and forget about the existence of the car for five years. But this is not our method. Our method is to keep the car in excellent technical condition, but one day get to know new automotive subcultures.

This is exactly how, as for many others, the modification of the car for Sergei began. At first he looked at pictures on the Internet, then he came to a thematic event, where, with the help of its participants, he “cut down the springs” for the first time on his father’s “six” at the time, and then he got involved and began visiting them one after another. Initially, the project was built in the resto-cal style: original body and interior, low suspension, maximum retro accessories... Original rims and caps, as well as accessories in the form of whitewalls, carb fillers and other style elements were found and installed. But in 2012, Sergei once again looked at the front door that had been damaged in a small accident - and everything was closed...

Outside

Until the moment when Sergei found himself in the hands of an angle grinder with a cleaning disc, this VAZ-2106 from 1985 was an interesting car, but not too flashy. However, the fate of the car was predetermined by a slightly jammed door: it was then that enthusiasm, power tools and new knowledge about the rat look style converged at one point in the universe.

The door was mercilessly rusted: first the paintwork was removed from it, and then the part was treated with a composition based on hydrochloric acid. When the door took on its characteristic rusty tint, it was washed and coated with alkyd varnish to stop further surface corrosion. But what is one door when the garage has electricity and a stripping disc costs a penny?! The trunk lid went under the knife, and then Sergei could no longer be stopped. Last year, he even added the roof to make the project look complete.

At the end of the styling, the car moved a few more centimeters closer to the ground due to the shortening of the springs, but gained a little more comfort due to longer shock absorbers. The final ground clearance is 20 mm!

The car flaunts on American Racing wheels measuring 13x5.5, on which chrome rings are installed to form a “shelf”. To install the discs, we had to sharpen the brake calipers - in the factory version they touched the wheel. Tire parameters are 145/70/13 at the front and 155/70/13 at the rear.

Technique

The rat look style does not prohibit aggregate tuning, but does not oblige it either - the key condition is the excellent technical condition of the car, which should only be outwardly “on its knees”. Therefore, Sergei’s project avoided major modifications: the engine in the car is original, with a volume of 1.6 liters and a power of 76 horsepower. A few technical interventions were limited to repairs and maintenance during long-term operation - a major overhaul of the cylinder head was carried out, as well as modification and adjustment of the carburetor.

But the appearance of the engine compartment has undergone major changes. In 2015, during the winter period, free from visiting exhibitions and events, the engine compartment was reshaped: excess holes were welded and filled, the metal was painted black, the wiring harnesses of the units, relays and power wires were removed. The battery has moved to the luggage compartment. Some parts - the air filter housing and valve cover - were replaced with chrome, and some were trial-plated with nickel, which eventually also gave way to chrome. The only “non-standard” unit is a five-speed gearbox from a VAZ-2107, the installation of which was forced by regular use.

Sergey modified the suspension in accordance with stylistic requirements and his own wishes for comfort. The stock springs were shortened, the upper control arms were swapped, and an adjustable Panhard rod was installed on the rear axle. All the bumpers were removed, and a tunnel was cut out under the cardan so that when lowered it would not touch the body.

Inside

If outwardly the car inspires unknowing people with a feeling of decay and hopelessness, then inside - as Zoshchenko wrote: “it’s very nice for them to come here.” The interior has been given the same color and factory appearance: seats from a VAZ-21011 are installed here in the “color” of the car body and floor covering from a VAZ-2103 is laid.

Transmission and chassis repair 2106

The chassis, despite the fact that it is structurally more than half a century old, does not irritate with its archaism. If you look at it, even antediluvian drum brakes do not require replacement with disc brakes. They cope well with the car at the speeds that are available to it, and if the brake pads are replaced in a timely manner, they do not cause any complaints. The condition of the steering gear is assessed both while driving and during repairs, but its maintenance consists only of changing the oil. It is extremely rare for the steering mechanism to jam, and this happens when the driver missed the moment of lubricant leakage, and it can leak in the place where the steering column is attached to the mechanism shaft.

The gearbox of old Zhiguli cars amazes with its reliability and durability. There are examples of sixes whose owners do not know what gearbox repair is.
