Moreover, this happens both in the new and secondary car markets. Therefore, we decided to start with a review of domestic cars, and then continue with foreign cars.

How to determine a bad cylinder

Having noticed that the check is flashing, the VAZ 2114 engine begins to trip, the first thing you need to do is determine the non-working cylinder.

To do this, the following steps are taken:

  • start the engine and open the hood;
  • listen to and remember the nature of the engine operation;
  • We remove the high-voltage wires from the spark plugs one by one. As soon as the sound does not change when the wire is removed, it means that the bad cylinder has been identified.

The next step is to unscrew the spark plugs and determine their condition. Soot on spark plugs is an important indicator of adequate operation of the power unit. Assessing the condition of the spark plug will help determine why the engine in a VAZ 2114 is stalling.

What to look for when buying a used Lada Granta

It is clear that if you are going to buy this used Russian car, then most likely your budget leaves much to be desired. Unfortunately, despite the fact that this is a good car for the money, in most cases this model is not purchased for a good life.

Naturally, when money is limited, then buying a Lada Granta on the secondary market is akin to walking through a minefield. After all, in the event of an unsuccessful purchase, it will be doubly offensive to spend money and receive a problematic car that requires large investments. How can this be avoided? Firstly, let us remind you that the Lada Granta recently underwent a restyling (update), receiving a fresher appearance. Reviews about VAZ 2114 - what you need to know about this car

Initially, I do not set myself the goal of “trampling Russian-made cars into the mud,” nor of extolling them to the skies, deceiving all readers. I just want to bring into your consciousness, if you need it, a personal subjective opinion from owning this or that car, hoping that it will help you in making a choice when purchasing it. So, I will begin to show my journalistic activity with a story about the car that I currently own, namely: LADA-2114, “four” (in the language of car enthusiast slang). My driving experience dates back to 2002. Until this moment, immediately after receiving my license, I had the opportunity to drive such cars as Moskvich-412, GAZ-2410 1992, VAZ-21051 1991. (V engine 1.2; chain), “VAZ-21093” 1998, “VAZ-21053” 1994. (I got a very reliable one, my parents still drive it), LADA -210540 (my first personal car, bought with the money my wife and I earned; I need to write a separate review about this car!).

Naturally, there is no point in putting all the cars I have driven in a row for comparison - it is ridiculous! However, it is worth noting that every car that I or members of our family owned was certainly worth the money and justified all the money invested in it. “Why is he treating us here?!” - you thought. It's simple: all these cars were affordable both to buy and to maintain! Perhaps this is the main criterion that I urge you, dear Dromovites, to use when choosing your iron horse. I will not go into the subtle technical details of the operation and repair of my Four, I will simply tell you about my emotions from owning it.

It all started when my wife and I decided to take a more interesting car than the LADA-210540. In search of a good and suitable option for us, I rummaged through a bunch of local newspapers and absorbed a certain amount of Internet traffic. I’ll note right away that I use the famous Ekaterinburg portal “e1.ru” with the same pleasure as “drom.ru”. In short, I found a suitable advertisement for sale on “e1.ru”. We read it, asked the price, and decided that we need to agree with the owner about a “test drive.” We agreed, we drove up, we looked, we felt, we took a closer look.

The car had a luxury configuration (PTF, heated seats, trip computer, ESP; among the “extras”: all-round tinting, good music (without a subwoofer), alarm system with auto start “Starline-A6”). There was no casting, which was nice. Why are you happy? Because when buying a car I don’t want to overpay for an incomprehensibly used casting, and I have a “demanding” taste.

So, I bought my car in June 2011 from a young guy two years younger than me. LADA-211440, produced in September 2008, mileage 56,000 (I think it was adjusted), engine capacity 1596 cm3, engine power 61 horsepower, beautiful “Robin Hood” color, worth 210,000 ruble coins. The guy asked for 215,000, but his fenders had to be shortened a little, since I noticed shoals on the bumpers (“thanks” to our Russian roads), and a little on the body (chips, minor, barely noticeable scratches and abrasions). By the way, when drawing up the purchase and sale agreement, I was surprised that the color “dark green (green)” was indicated in the PTS. I always thought it was black metallic. A hint of “green” is visible only when looking at the paintwork under serious lighting, but the “peak” appears when the paintwork gets wet (only then do you realize that it is green!). And so - a beautiful black gangster Four))).

I washed, cleaned, polished the “Five” and put it in a paid parking lot, placed an advertisement for sale in the local newspaper and on more or less popular Internet resources. “What an idiot...,” you immediately thought, “after all, you could have first sold the “five”, then bought at least a normal Korean!” Everything is clear, but at that moment we were saving money for an apartment, and the main criterion that I try to follow when buying a car played an important role (see above).

By the way, I sold the “five” exactly two weeks after submitting an ad in the local newspaper. I offered it for 140,000 coins, I was ready to trade, and the man who looked at it was not only ready for him - he was simply aimed at him! In short, 130 sput, deal, and everyone is happy! I want, despite all the mistakes that I corrected during the warranty period, and of which there were a LOT, it went to the new owner in PERFECT condition. I really love taking care of cars until the very last day of owning them! And they don’t let me down in gratitude for this!

Please forgive me for the fact that there are a lot of lyrics, I just want my story to be interesting, logical, and consistent. )))))

So, we signed the contract, counted the money, wished each other good luck on the roads, and all of them left with happy faces. It’s convenient that the license plates remained on the car, and you didn’t have to pay extra money when registering it. True, it is worth expressing my deep gratitude to our traffic cops for their DISLIKE for tinting. I had to pay 300 rubles for tinting the windshield (75% film), and three hundred rubles for the front side windows (5% film). After detonation there were no problems with registration.

(True, the bitterness from parting with the tinting was short-lived. Immediately after registering, I rolled up the windows again, but didn’t touch the windshield - the chances of going unnoticed by the DePeSe employees were greatly increased. But what are you going to do... my wife and I bought it in the fall apartment, there was a need to change the registration certificate. And the windows are darker than night. Eeeeh... I cleared it up, changed the documents, didn’t roll it up again, because I read on the Internet that our friends from July will be pressing license plates for such a criminal offense. I ride like this, I seem to have gotten used to it, although I wouldn’t mind tinting...)

The next day I went to my service man Lyokha in a private garage. They examined, touched, smelled, shook, twisted. Verdict: wear of the timing belt and roller (replacement), wear of the front brake pads (replacement), fatigue of the handbrake cables (tightened). In short, there are no problems, because all of the above are banal consumables! The price of the issue is pennies compared to the cost of the car and the joy of owning it. Everything else is fine. The only thing I still insisted on was changing the engine and gearbox oil. After all, it’s more reliable this way, and there’s already something to keep track of the mileage between oil changes.

I drove like a foreign car. Anyone who is familiar with the contrasting delights of owning a car will understand me as if they were their own! The 1.6 engine was a pleasant surprise; it would seem that the difference with the “five” was insignificant, but the torque indicator did its job, although not much. The car is a ROCKET! Yes, yes, and don’t laugh at me, happy owners of RANGE ROVER SPORT! I adequately compare my car with the one I drove.

For the money, the car is quite normal, it is not expensive to maintain. The suspension, “like a classic,” does not need to be constantly shaken.

Hodovka. It turns much better than the same “classic”, it rolls much less. Thanks to the rack and pinion steering, the car is more pleasant to drive, the steering wheel responds better, responds faster and more clearly. I could be wrong, but there is a feeling that the car coasts better than rear-wheel drive. Perhaps this is due to the absence of a gearbox and cardan transmission; accordingly, there are no unnecessary hums and noises.

Speaking of noise, the Four was taped: the ceiling, doors, bottom of the luggage compartment. Not a LEXUS RX, of course, but it had quite a decent effect - enough, in a word. The interior turned out to be good - there were almost no extraneous squeaks, they appeared only in winter during severe frosts, after sufficient warming up, the squeaks disappeared.

More about noises... Music. The car had quite decent music installed: Pioneer head; in front, not in the standard ones, but in softer podiums, 16-inch SOUNDMAKH speakers are installed, the tweeters from which are placed on the panel; At the back, SONY pancakes were installed on the acoustic shelf and ALPINE tweeters on the top parts of the racks (by the way, I didn’t think that they could have such an effect). I exchanged the SONY speakers for PIONEER “pancakes”, which I took from an unsold “five”. They were just more powerful, more serious, and almost new - the toad, as they say, was choking))). Also from the “five”, the CLARION passive subwoofer with the BLAUPUNKT amplifier migrated to the Rocket. That's when the car just started to sound. It still sounds to this day in such a way that the sound of TRANCE music appears first, and after two or three minutes it becomes clear where this sound is coming from. Class!

After a week of operation, the STARLINE A6 alarm system with auto start gave up its life for a long time: everything worked, only it went numb - the signal to the siren did not pass through. He did not repair it, but replaced it with a new one: TOMAHAWK. Naturally, there was no difference.

In the fall I changed the standard strut supports to “SS20 standard”, I changed them myself, it’s not difficult. It’s not a matter of show-off, and I didn’t feel any difference in handling, to be honest, they’re just more structurally sound, they look much more reliable than standard ones, and I bought them from an official dealer who offers a three-year warranty on them - that says a lot, although maybe , I'm wrong, but there are no problems with them to this day.

The frosts came, HANKUK tires were waiting in the garage on the beautiful thirteenth GR cast, which Pyatyorka left me as a legacy.

After the winter I replaced the rear struts with KAYABU ones - the old ones started leaking at the same time. In the Urals there are sometimes severe frosts in winter.

So I drove without any problems... until Thursday of last week. I was driving to the dacha, and suddenly, for no apparent reason, when there were 60 meters left to the destination, the Chetyrka twitched and stalled. Attempts to start it and continue driving were unsuccessful. He opened the hood and looked around. The visual inspection did not raise any alarms; everything was in place. I called my son-in-law, he came, they hooked the Four with FOCUS, and towed it to Lyokha. (Thanks to my son-in-law, by the way, he always helps out, WELL DONE!)

In the garage, I explained to the craftsmen – Lyokha and his partner Sanya – what had happened. After poking around under the hood, they made assumptions: there was a problem in the crankshaft position sensor (CPS) circuit, the alarm system had jumped (due to the failure of one of its modules, the engine could have blocked). I left the car for repairs. For two days, or rather evenings, the men could not find the reason for the absence, as was already known at that time, of sparks on the spark plugs. Again, all thoughts pointed to a problem associated with the DPKV circuit. Diagnostics of the electronic control unit (ECU), oddly enough, did not show any errors. In short, by the end of the second evening, welding of the white and green cores of the DPKV shielded wire was discovered. Most likely, a hot collector fused them over time. This could not be said during a visual inspection, since the wire consists of insulation, a screen, and two wires (if you encounter a problem, immediately “ring” the DPKV wire from connector to connector).

A short circuit was no longer detected when the DPKV wire was “tested”, but there was no more joy from this - there was still no spark. On Saturday morning we called Sanya and the two of us decided (Lyokha was away on business) to look at the car again. He called a friend, described the problem and asked him to come and take a look. He arrived 30 minutes later, jumped around the car with a sampler, “ringed” some chains, and experimented with winding. He asked us to remove the ECU (aka “brains”). Removed. He took it apart, twisted it, looked at it, poked it with a probe, and exclaimed that there was not enough resistor in the circuit (by the way, there were actually traces of soldering, but there was none). We started looking for the resistor on the floor, thinking that it had fallen out when disassembling the ECU housing. Naturally, they didn’t find it. Then the electronics engineer broke, with our permission, a mobile phone charger that came to hand, removed the resistor that came to hand first (we could not reasonably know its value), soldered it into the ECU, assembled everything and... OH A MIRACLE! The sparks from the candles were so long-awaited that they seemed like some kind of festive fireworks flying out from under the hood! They gave this comrade three hundred ruble coins, shook his hand, thanked him and said goodbye to him.

We experimented with starting the engine and stopping it, everything went well. We started collecting everything in four hands. I wanted to drive so much that my hands were shaking and I started breaking out in a cold sweat. KIDDING! Although I really really wanted to get behind the wheel... We brought the car's disassembled interior into line, installed the plastic, and got ready to start the engine. “Ah-ha-ha, ah-ha-ha”... Hysterics began - the engine would not start, they checked the spark - there was none. These are the tricks! “What kind of hat?” - we thought.

Nothing was clear. BUT! Before this, the control unit was not touched (they only removed the connector for “dialing”), but then, after removing it, positive dynamics were suddenly discovered. We unscrewed the ECU again, started twisting and turning it, started tugging and squeezing all the wires (there are about 50 of them) and at the same time turning the engine. The car would start or not. Later, Sanka turned the control unit 360 degrees so that the harness was twisted, and told him to start it. I spun, the Rocket roared. He “loosened his grip” again. The car stalled. And then it became clear that somewhere one of this many wires was simply making poor connections. Which of the approximately 50?

They began to remember that in all the literature they write that until a reliable signal arrives from the DPKV to the ECU, nothing will work. Even if you crash against the wall and burst, that’s okay! In short, we rang the DPKV wire again (for short circuit, relative to the housing) - the wire is ideal. Its white and green wires, which connect to the ECU connector when the engine is running, began to move. The car stalled. Everything became clear.

They couldn’t disassemble the connector (they weren’t electricians, after all), and even if they did, there would simply be nothing to replace the “mother” with. We unscrewed the harness, turned the ECU upside down, and pressed it down with a rug so that it would not move. The rocket started up, I went to the injector specialists who clean the injectors, chip tuning, etc. He came and painted everything in colors. They didn’t get away with it for a long time, since I had already explained everything in a popular manner. The specialist removed the control unit, disassembled it and laughed sweetly, saying that the resistor that was soldered in should not be there, it is there only during some test manipulations. Well, oh well... It’s not a pity that the first electronics engineer was a little too clever, but THANKS to him we knew where to look for the reason and we found it ourselves!

In short, we cut the harness, removed the white and (just in case!) green wires of the DPKV wire, replaced them, started the engine... EVERYTHING IS PERFECT!!! I collected the plastic and went home with a hungry but satisfied face. THIS IS HOW REPAIRS ARE.

Yesterday I picked up the car from a scheduled transmission repair. We replaced three gears and two clutches (these are also gears). Another car enthusiast might have given up on the fact that sometimes third gear was knocked out, and second gear was engaged with a slight crunch, but I prefer not to kill cars, but to lovingly care for them, advocating a safe, reliable and comfortable ride! Along the way, as they say, the seals were replaced and, naturally, new LUKOIL gear oil was filled in. Yesterday I ran it in. The car is like new! I wanted to immediately replace the “grenades” if necessary, but the craftsmen said that there was no point in this - their condition was very good (only the boot on the left was replaced)! Although, in theory, I also did not observe any crunches while driving and guessed it. Just wanted to play it safe. About spare parts. In the winter that had sunk into oblivion, I felt like the owner of an exclusive limited edition car. WHY? Because even owners of CADILLAC ESCALADE can afford to wait for spare parts, even after some time. And my spare parts, which I will now talk about, simply do not exist in nature, they are not even available from suppliers... ARE YOU SURPRISED?

1 problem. In winter, I smelled gasoline, opened the hood, sniffed, looked closer, and saw a drop on the fuel hose. And I have it on some kind of new model, not with rolling pins and nuts, but with some kind of latches. In our stores I was simply discouraged from purchasing them - they said that it was useless to order even in Tolyatti, they were simply not yet produced as spare parts. Well, yes, the car is 2008, it’s 2012... WHY? After all, our cars begin to break down only after the tenth lap on the speedometer. LOL! So, by 2041 we need to start asking, when there will be nowhere to put it. In short, everything turned out to be much simpler. I came to Lyokha’s warm garage, he twirled it, took it off, put it back, told me to drive - that’s it, there was no problem. Perhaps the severe Ural frosts had an effect.

Problem 2. The day before yesterday I decided to replace the cabin filter. Before that I saw that there was some piece of cut fiberglass visible there. I took it off, and there was a miracle of amateur performances. That strange rag was glued to the plastic frame of the cabin filter. I'm tired of it. I went, all heroic, to our collective farm car stores. Suddenly, I think, I’ll take some other tuned one, charcoal or something else. RIGHT NOW! “What year is your basin,” they say, “my dear?” “Two thousand and eight,” I replied. So, they say, even the suppliers don’t have it for your car yet. You won't believe it, but I'm no longer surprised.

I went to a truck store and bought for 40 rubles a bag made of fabric similar to padding polyester, which is put on the air filter of diesel trucks. I armed myself with silicone sealant and glue (I don’t know what will glue this stuff better). In short, he’s not a fool, apparently, there was a previous owner, he also wanted to breathe clean air and was inventive, well done!

SUMMARY OF THE ABOVE! I want to say that, of course, I dream of a new RANGE ROVER EVOGUE or MERCEDES-BENZ G-KLASSE. But the reality is that I really love the cars I drive, because I drive them all the time, I can afford their PROMPT repairs and maintenance, and the joy of owning them is not covered by the bitterness of starvation, the severity of the housing problem and the sacrifices of my personal life! I mean financial freedom (no loans), and material and spiritual wealth, which are sometimes destroyed by a rash decision to purchase one thing or another.

Body

The biggest headache for any Lada Granta owner is, of course, body corrosion, which does not spare any car. Unfortunately, no matter how hard AvtoVAZ tried, they could not overcome the rapid rusting of cars. For example, samples of cars from 2014-2015, judging by reviews on the Internet, showed signs of rust already in the first year of owning a new car.

Continued improvement of the VAZ-21144

It should be noted that the exhaust circuit has changed and the catalyst assembly, which used to be under the car, has been especially improved, but it was hastily moved to the cylinder block. Since that time, the catalytic collector did not cause a fire hazard when the VAZ 2114 drove, for example, on dry grass and began to heat up much faster for more efficient operation.

Unfortunately, the new electric throttle did not make life easier for VAZ 2114 owners; rather, on the contrary, it forced them to turn to diagnostic specialists for help more often. After all, the throttle has a complex design and is very difficult to disassemble; moreover, the price is high, clearly not for a car of this class. Checking the required node is almost impossible; it is only possible to measure the accuracy of the readings with a special voltage device. There were also added problems with the functionality of the gas pedal in the area of ​​increasing speed, because they no longer ensured an urgent stop of the car in the event that could lead to an accident.

A number of problems arose due to this innovation, which the manufacturer could not ignore. The first step was to flash the M74 unit, which partially solved the problem with the throttle not working correctly. However, if the problem was solved, it was only partially resolved, and soon a second attempt to update the I414DE07 firmware began. This time, the manufacturer of LADA VAZ 2114 proudly announced that the problem was solved once and for all. Unfortunately, in practice, everything turned out to be not so rosy: the problem appeared again and its appearance was due to throttle correlation, incorrect operation of the brake limit switch or breakdown of the brake lights. The only solution to the problem of a node malfunction is to replace it with a new one.

As a result of this modernization, the VAZ-2114 has improved its dynamic characteristics with more economical fuel consumption. But the amount of space under the hood made repair and other technical work very difficult.

Thanks to engines with two shafts and modernized hydraulic compensators, when servicing thermal valve clearances, it is no longer necessary to monitor the oil level. When operating engine 21126 on LADA 2114, you need to maintain the recommended mileage and only then begin replacing the timing belt and rollers. If one roller stops working adequately, it will simply jam and the belt will reset, causing the camshafts to fail. As a result, the valve will come into direct contact with the pistons, which will damage their rods and connecting rods.

Motor

According to service technicians, when purchasing, you should pay attention to the complex 16-valve engine, which, although improved compared to the old indestructible 8-valve engines, still has a number of problems due to the complexity of the design.

First, be sure to measure compression during inspection. In no case should it be less than 11 bar. Ideally it should be 12 bar. The difference between the cylinders should not be more than 0.5-0.6 bar.

Causes of interruptions on a warm engine

There are times when a cold engine works normally, but as it warms up it starts to stall. This happens due to a mismatch in valve clearances: on a cold unit the clearance is normal, but when it warms up, the valves begin to tighten; It is also worth checking the integrity of the head gasket, electronic control module and ignition coils, which may break due to damaged wiring.

Transmission

Also, when inspecting, pay attention to the transmission, which during a test drive should operate without any extraneous sounds or grinding noises. Place special emphasis on reverse gear, which should engage without a crash.

Check whether the clutch pedal is fully depressed. Be sure to pay attention to the operation of the gearbox synchronizers when moving forward, especially in 2nd gear, which most often wears out on these cars (second gear synchronizer).

Suspension

The suspension of the Lada Granta is quite reliable and durable (what else is needed on Russian roads?). Nevertheless, you shouldn’t expect any outstanding mileage from it, like, for example, on Toyota cars. Also keep in mind that the suspension of the Lada Granta is quite stiff and noisy.

There are also complaints about the front struts, which become noisy even with low mileage.

Tuning model 2114

VAZ 2114 seems to be created for tuning. The vast majority of finishing operations described on the Internet are associated with this particular car. There is nothing surprising here. Some components need to be modified for successful further operation, and some need to be modified to give the vehicle a more modern and unique look.
