Repair and operation manual - Body - Replacing and adjusting the trunk lid lock VAZ-21099
The trunk lid lock is non-removable. If the trunk lid lock is faulty, replace the lock.
1. To replace the trunk lid lock, unscrew the two fastening nuts and remove the lock.
2. Reinstall the trunk lid lock in the reverse order. After installation, adjust the trunk lid lock.
3. If, when closing the trunk lid, the lock latch does not fit into the hole in the latch (a blow is heard and the trunk lid closes with great force), loosen the two fastening bolts and move the latch in the desired direction. After this, tighten the fastening bolts of the clamp.
Adjusting the latch and replacing the trunk lock on a VAZ 21099:
- First, to remove the lock from the trunk lid, use a wrench or an extension with a head cap to unscrew the two nuts that secure the lock to the trunk lid.
- Once the retaining nuts are removed, remove the inner lock from the cover by hand.
- Next, remove the small spring from the same place and check its condition.
Note! If the spring suddenly becomes too compressed or skewed, replace it with a new one!
- And then, from the inside of the trunk lid, remove the button with the cylinder and check the condition of the button in the same way.
Replace the lock button that is not working and also slows down when pressed with a new one!
Drawings and dimensions of the false floor in the trunk of a VAZ 2107
Based on its geometry, the niche between the side members begs for a kind of organizer for tools, spare parts and small items, which you can easily assemble with your own hands from chipboard or pressed plywood. The cover of this organizer will be a false floor. The result is two independent compartments - one for hardware, the second for luggage.
The design is quite simple to assemble. For assembly, you will need to cut five blanks (or more, depending on the desired number of niches under the raised floor):
- 580x115 mm - three pieces, two of them will lie along the side members, and one will be a partition in the center;
- 780x115 mm - will fit between the rear bumper mounting pipes;
- 840x115 mm - the farthest side, between the thrust cups of the springs.
The structure is screwed together using furniture screws; the false floor itself, the size of the cover of the first tier, will be the same as the dimensions and contours of the perimeter of the resulting niche.
It is better to screw the hinges to it not in place, but by fixing the lid with several screws and removing the entire structure from the trunk, in a convenient place, on a workbench, for example. After this, you can sheathe the resulting organizer with any material - from leatherette to carpet. As a result, the trunk is always tidy, the floor is level and clean.

Installation:
The trunk lid lock of the VAZ 21099 car is not dismountable, so do not try to repair it or do anything with it. If the lock is in a defective condition and is faulty, then it must be replaced with a new one!
- First, put the entire system back together. That is, if you previously removed the button with the cylinder and a small spring, then install them in their places in the reverse order of removal.
- Next, take the new lock in your hands and install it in its place, still tightening it with the same fastening nuts.
- After installation, try closing and opening the trunk lid. If, when closing the lid, the trunk lock suddenly does not fit into the hole in the latch, usually in this case a distinct knock is heard in the area of the lock, and the lid closes very poorly, in this case:
Tips for choosing a quality lock
Many VAZ-2109 owners are confident that locks from any car will be suitable for their cars.
This opinion is not true. For installation on the “nine”, experts advise buying locks from Lada Kalina. Blockers from this model of a domestic manufacturer are easy to install and, with intensive use, can last 2–3 years. In addition, blockers from the VAZ-21099 model are perfect for the “nine”. These locks have such advantages as low price and long service life (about 4–5 years).
Experienced auto mechanics under no circumstances advise experimenting and purchasing locks from foreign cars for the VAZ-2109. By purchasing such blockers, you will not achieve the desired result, but will only waste your time and money.
Adjusting and removing the latch, as well as replacing the trunk lock on a VAZ 2108, VAZ 2109:
Removal:
- At the beginning of the operation, remove the trim from the trunk lid, to do this:
First, use a screwdriver to pry up the “10” pistons and then remove them.
And after removal, remove the trim from the trunk lid of the car.
- When the casing is removed, use a wrench or socket wrench to remove the two nuts that secure the lock to the cover.
When unscrewing the nuts, be careful, because immediately behind one of this nuts there are two “negative” terminals, which can be very easily damaged!
- Next, when the nuts are unscrewed, disconnect these two “negative” terminals from the metal stud.
- And then remove the lock from the trunk lid.
Now let's move on to removing and adjusting the latch.
If you do not want to remove it and know that it is well adjusted, then continue reading below, in the “Installation” section!
- To remove the clamp, first unscrew the two bolts that secure the clamp using a wrench.
If the trunk lid does not close well, or when closing the lid there is an impact in the area of the lock, then in this case, adjust the position of the latch by moving it in the desired direction!
- Then use a screwdriver or hand to pry up the fastener and then remove it from the car body.
If the trunk lid again does not close well and has vertical play, then in this case, adjust the position of the lock exclusively in height!
- Finally, remove all adjusting washers.
If necessary, increase or decrease the number of shims. This will make the trunk lid easier to close!
- To install the lock and door trim in place, follow the steps below:
- First, attach the new lock to the place where the old one was installed.
- Then put two “negative” terminals on one of the studs and then tighten both nuts securing the lock.
- And finally, install the casing in its place, securing it with ten pistons.
- To install the latch, do the same but in reverse order, that is:
- Increase or decrease the number of shims.
- After this, install the lock retainer on top of these washers and subsequently adjust and tighten it with two bolts.
Installing the lock yourself
First, you need to remove the casing. Then you need to drill two holes to secure the activator. The ground wire is clamped with the activator screw and sealed with sealant. The frame, which is included in the activator kit, bends at approximately an angle of 90 degrees. Although it is better to bend it in such a way that it is easier for the cable to pull out the tongue.
The next step is cutting a steel rod, approximately 4 cm long, which is installed in the activator ring. An adapter is put on its second end, to which the cable is attached. The fastener for the cable sheath can be made from the rest of the frame, which will be clamped with the windshield wiper motor bolt.
Then we lay the wiring inside the trunk door and lead it through the rubber shell into the cabin. In the cabin, you need to bend the edge of the headliner and lay the wire down along the rear pillar, then run it under the carpet and sound insulation. The plastic sheath is then peeled off at the end of the cable and soldered to the frame using a copper washer. Everything is lubricated with sealant.
Next, when installing the trunk lock, the cable is attached to the tongue. It presses well, because the cable is single-core and steel. Next, the shell mount is screwed on. You need to adjust its tension. Connecting the lock according to the standard electrical diagram. You can use the standard activation button. Now all that remains is to check how the trunk opens.
The rear of the eighth and ninth series VAZ cars are designed in such a way that when there is a counter flow of air, they contaminate the rear viewing window of the vehicle. These models drive almost all the time with a dirty rear end. And accordingly, with contamination of the rear part of the vehicle, sand, dirt, moisture and salt solutions get into the trunk lock structure, leading to corrosion on the critical mechanisms of the lock, which often leads to its failure.
But the opening of the mechanism can be activated using a button that is located at the driver’s hand in the car interior. Thus, you don’t have to worry about dirt in the closing mechanism, and it will create more trouble for intruders who want to check the contents of the trunk. It is possible to improve the “closing-opening” device of the trunk on most Zhiguli models.

Now let's change the lock
The Lada Kalina will allow you to completely replace the trunk lock without any problems. A friendly car, what can I say.
First follow the previous instructions. To replace the lock, you need to remove the cylinder. You already know how this is done.
Now a couple more steps:
- use a large Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the locking mechanism;
- You need to unscrew 2 mounting bolts;
- pull the knot towards you;
- it should give in and be easily removed;
- do not forget to disconnect the plug with power wires from the system.
Is it worth picking the trunk lock of a Lada Kalina station wagon or another body type? No. This is an extra hassle. A worn or broken lock is difficult to repair. Usually impossible.
It’s easier, faster, and also cheaper to buy a new unit. And replace it on the car.
