What forces act on the cylinder head during engine operation?
How to disassemble a torque wrench
Any operating mode of the motor leads to uneven heating of the head. The areas located above the combustion chambers heat up much more strongly than the rest of the body, which causes thermal stress on the metal. The higher the engine speed or the greater the load on it, the greater the difference in heating of different parts of this part. In some areas, the thermal expansion of the aluminum from which the body of this part is made is so strong that it increases the pressure on the gasket between the head and the cylinder block. Therefore, after a certain period of time it is necessary to repeat the tightening torque of the screws, otherwise there is a high probability of the gasket burning out.
What forces act on the cylinder head when tightening the screws?
The gasket, which is installed between the cylinder block and the cylinder head, has a certain thickness, which decreases during tightening. Despite its overall rigidity, the aluminum body of this part is deformed by thousandths of a millimeter during tightening, so it is necessary to carry it out from the center to the edges. In this case, it is possible to compensate for the bending of its surface (sole). When the head rests on the cylinder block, the pressure on each part of its sole is the same. As it is tightened, the pressure in the places where the bolts (screws) are installed increases, which leads to a V-shaped deformation of the sole. To avoid this, you must strictly follow the sequence of actions. If the tightening order is incorrect or the force (torque) does not match the motor, the likelihood of gasket burnout and engine repair increases.

Symptoms of a problem
If you repair the crankshaft yourself, you can save a lot on car service costs. Therefore, it is worth understanding its diagnosis, repair and installation. If repairs are not carried out in a timely manner, the engine may seize, and this can lead to more serious repairs. The following are signs that serve to identify malfunctions:
- when the engine is running, the oil level control light does not go out, which indicates a decrease in oil pressure in the system;
- at medium and high speeds a metallic knock is heard in the engine, which increases with increasing speed;
- engine jams.
The cause of the first two malfunctions is the wear of the main and connecting rod journals. In this case, the distance between the neck and the liner increases, which leads to a decrease in oil pressure. If the distance is too large, the shaft may run out, causing metallic sounds in the engine. If the engine jams, it is better to replace the crankshaft. To diagnose the serviceability of the crankshaft, it should be dismantled and cleaned. It is better to remove the part together with the engine.
After removal, you need to perform a visual inspection of the necks and cheeks, according to which a decision is made on the need for grinding or replacement. No special instruments are needed for inspection; you can tell by touch. If scratches and burrs are found on the journals, the part is sent for boring. Boring can be done 4 times. Each boring increases the dimensions of the liners by 0.25 mm. After dismantling the crankshaft, you need to evaluate the size of the liners and whether they will allow boring. If grinding has never been performed, then the liners have an icon without any numbers.
If cracks are found, the crankshaft must be replaced. You can send it for welding, but usually restored parts last no more than 50 thousand kilometers. After boring, you need to polish the journals. Then the journals and crankshaft need to be washed with gasoline. The oil passages should also be thoroughly cleaned to prevent contamination from entering the bearings. After washing with gasoline, you need to blow out the oil channels using compressed air.
When Bolts Need Replacement
Before you begin tightening the bolts, you should inspect them. A visual assessment of the condition is not enough; it is necessary to check the fastener parameters. He must:
Some mechanics recommend regularly screwing new bolts into the cylinder head. Others adhere to the rule that replacement should only be carried out if the fastener is screwed into the socket tightly. It is best not to skimp on bolts, since using a component that is obviously stretched increases the risk of its metal breaking. The consequences of this are almost unpredictable; in most cases, it will be possible to restore the operation of the power plant only with the help of specialists.
