Automatic transmission oil JF414E (Granta)
The automatic transmission with 4 gears belongs to the mini class and is designed for cars with front-wheel drive. The JF414E gearbox was developed by Jatco for cars with engines up to 1.6 liters. The box is known to domestic motorists because it is installed on a Russian car produced by AvtoVAZ - Lada Granta. Since 2013, it has been installed on Nissan Almerias and Marches with engines up to 1.6 liters. Another unit can be found on rare Ad Vans in Russia. This transmission is designed as a budget and reliable option for mass-produced cars. Positioned as a competitor to the unit produced by Aisin - AW60-40LE. The JF414 gearbox was designed by Jatco according to VAZ’s technical specifications to outlast the car itself. Therefore, with proper operation and timely maintenance, it lasts a long time. What kind of oil should be poured into the JF414E (Granta) automatic transmission?
Conclusion
Having considered the suitable options, you can decide on the best oil for the Lada Granta automatic transmission. It is better to use a quality product, which does not have to be expensive and original. This can be seen judging by the presence on the market of quite good analogues from the companies Mobil, Castrol, ZIC, ExxonMobil, Lukoil, etc.
Good day to all. One of our clients has a Lada Granta car with an automatic transmission. Before this, he constantly bought engine oil, but today he decided to change the oil in the box. And accordingly, he had a question about choosing an oil in Grant’s automatic transmission
. That is why I decided to write this article. By the way, if the topic of domestic cars has already begun, I recommend that you read the article at your leisure:.
The Lada Granta with automatic transmission appeared on the Russian market not so long ago. An ordinary Granta was taken, the familiar mechanics were taken out of it, a Japanese Jatco JF414E automatic was installed and the whole thing was put into production. Here is the recipe for the famous Granta on the machine. In principle, the machine itself is quite reliable. And with proper maintenance and attitude it will not cause any trouble. Although today this machine is installed only on a couple of models. This is our Granta and Nissan March (Micra).

How to check the oil level?
To check the oil level, use a dipstick and to get to it, the easiest way is to move the air filter housing to the side. Using the dipstick you can check not only the level, but also the condition of the oil. It is recommended to check every two to three months or more often.
The procedure for checking the oil level in a Jatco JF414E machine is as follows:
- We start and warm up the engine.
- Press the brake all the way.
- Smoothly turn on each mode using the selector.
- We put the selector in neutral.
- With the engine running at idle, check the oil level with a dipstick.
When the engine is not warmed up to operating temperature, we focus on the COOL mark; if the engine is hot, we look at the HOT mark.
Changing the oil in automatic transmission JF414E (Granta)
Fresh oil is poured into the hole for the dipstick, so we select a hose of exactly this diameter. We carry out the work in this order:
- We dismantle the engine splash guard, install a waste container under the drain plug, unscrew it and drain about a liter of dirty ATF.
- We pour approximately the same amount into the hole for the dipstick using a funnel with an extension hose.
- We disconnect the oil return hose from the automatic transmission, extend it with any suitable hose and lower it into a container for processing.
- We start the power unit, the gearbox selector is in neutral position. We monitor the color of the liquid from the hose. As soon as the ATF begins to lighten, turn off the engine and add exactly as much as was drained.
- Unscrew the drain plug and remove the pan using a 10mm socket.
- Pour the oil out of the pan, clean it and the magnets, wash thoroughly and wipe dry.
- We unscrew the filter of the machine (clean the filter and put it in place; if this is the first replacement, during the second replacement the filter must be replaced with a new one).
- Fill in the same amount of oil as was drained in total. Typically this is about 3 liters.
We check and set the correct oil level.

The best gear oil manufacturers
Transmission oils are produced by various factories. The Lada Grant manual transmission at AvtoVAZ is filled with Lukoil and Tatneft Translux; for automatic transmissions, the plant recommends choosing Genuine EJ-1 ATF or NISSAN ATF Matic-S. But on the market there are quality products from other brands that are suitable in terms of characteristics and properties.
Lukoil.
A universal oil that is filled at some car factories, and until 2012 it was filled at the AvtoVAZ plant. Excellent characteristics, wide temperature range and affordable price make the brand’s products universal.
Rosneft
. The products recommended by AvtoVAZ for manual transmissions fully comply with the requirements for oil. And the affordable price is especially relevant for owners of budget Lada Granta cars.
Elf.
French oils of this brand retain their properties for a long time. An ideal option for those who do not plan to update their transmission oil frequently.

Automatic Jatco
Lada Kalina is equipped with an automatic transmission from the Japanese company Jatco. This four-stage unit is recognized as very reliable and unpretentious in long-term use. But at the same time, like any other mechanism, it needs timely maintenance. Changing the oil in an automatic transmission is one of the most important transmission maintenance procedures to maintain the strength and reliability of its components. Let us note the fact that the same “automatic” was once installed in the Nissan Micra.
The AvtoVAZ company recommends using Genuine GM EJ-1 ATF oil, or filling in a high-quality analogue of Nissan ATF Matic-S. The reliability and high beneficial properties of both oils are confirmed by many years of research, as well as test results. Both oils have official approval from AvtoVAZ. We can say that the same oil that is used for the previous generation Nissan Micra is suitable for the Lada Granta automatic transmission.
Naturally, there are other options. For example, among cheaper analogues, Aisin ATF AFW+ would be a very good product.
Important tips when choosing gear oil
LADA GRANTA is available with different types of transmission - 5-speed manual and robotic gearboxes and 4-speed hydromechanical automatic transmission. Depending on the type of transmission, the oil is also selected.
The same transmission oil is used for the manual and robotic gearboxes that are installed on Lada Granta cars. This choice is explained by the fact that the operating principles of these boxes are similar to each other. The oil in them does not overheat and is not subjected to excessive pressure. Its main function is to reduce the mechanical load on the box parts, protect them from rust and remove heat.
Functions of motor oil
Except for bearing lubrication, without which they would not work for any significant time. oil performs several functions, each of which is worthy of separate consideration:
- lubrication of rubbing parts, especially sliding bearings of the crankshaft and timing shaft;
- removal of excess heat from friction points to further increase the service life of parts;
- cleaning the parts of the piston group and the gas distribution mechanism from carbon deposits and soot;
- the formation of a protective layer that protects engine parts during startup when there is no oil pressure.
Automatic gearbox oil Lada Granta
As is the case with a car engine, the oil in the Lada Granta automatic transmission needs to be regularly checked, updated and completely replaced if necessary. To avoid having to perform expensive transmission repairs, motorists need to know how to check, what to look for, and how to change the oil in an automatic transmission themselves.
Why is new lubricant required?
Manual transmission oil 2181 and automatic transmission performs 3 main functions: reducing friction between interacting parts, removing heat, and washing parts from deposits. All three processes assume that the substance will wear out - evaporate, go to create a protective film around parts, become contaminated with metal dust, etc. Moreover, how quickly wear occurs is influenced by external factors:
For these reasons, changing the oil in a Lada Granta automatic transmission is an individual matter. 75 thousand kilometers or 5 years of operation is an average value that will suit most. But it’s still better to monitor the quality of the oil in the automatic transmission.
Features of transmission oils for automatic transmissions
Let's start with the fact that the oil in an automatic transmission performs the same functions as in an engine: lubrication of rubbing surfaces, cooling, and transfer of small metal particles (chips), which are formed as a result of friction of parts against each other, to the oil filter.
Moreover, unlike a manual transmission, the most important function of oil in an automatic transmission, which few people remember, is to transmit torque from the engine flywheel to the planetary gears when the torque converter (GDT) is operating.
Like many other lubricants, ATP in the box tends to “age”. In other words, you need to know when to add or change the automatic transmission oil. As a rule, manufacturers of cars with automatic transmissions assure that they are filled with ATF for the entire service life and do not need to be changed throughout the entire period of operation.
When it comes to imported cars that are driven exclusively on European roads and have been in use for no more than five years, this recommendation is relevant. However, taking into account domestic conditions, as well as the fact that most car owners in the CIS do not have the opportunity to change their car not only after five, but also after ten to fifteen years, the ATF has to be changed.
Moreover, experts recommend doing this every 40-60 thousand km. This approach allows you to increase the service life of the unit and improve the quality of its work. The following are cases when it is necessary to carry out the procedure for changing the oil in the machine:
- Automatic transmission repair (full replacement);
- there were difficulties with shifting gears (replacing or topping up);
- noisy operation of the gearbox on a cold engine;
- extraneous metallic noises in the box (indicates wear of parts);
- drop in oil level in the automatic transmission;
If any of the listed problems occur, as well as during active use of the gearbox (off-road, specific aggressive driving style, sudden changes in outdoor temperatures, etc.), it is necessary to initially check the oil level and assess its type/condition.
ATF change timing
In order not to spend money on overhauling the automatic transmission, experienced car owners advise changing the oil in the gearbox after 65 thousand km of driving the vehicle.
Since negatively influencing processes occurring inside the machine, both due to the fault of the car owner and natural ones, contribute to the rapid production of lubricant.
Such negative processes include:
- an increase in the temperature in the box when slipping or driving off-road, as well as in countries with hot climates;
- cold and abrupt starts in winter;
- dirty filter device.
The oil in the Lada Xray automatic transmission ceases to perform the functions for which it was intended. Namely:
- protection of metal parts from wear;
- lubrication of machine components;
Attention! The Jatco JF414E automatic transmission is very picky about the quality of the lubricant. Therefore, cheap analogues will quickly disable it.
The manufacturer indicates that the lubricant must be changed after 80 thousand kilometers. Experienced car owners and mechanics advise motorists who have a car with this gearbox to replace it much earlier than this period. Therefore, the recommended complete replacement, taken from practice, is 50 - 60 thousand kilometers.
AvtoVAZ designers were faced with the task of finding an automatic transmission for the Lada Grant that would be reliable, inexpensive to operate and fit into the budget of the cheapest VAZ car. The Japanese automatic hydromechanical transmission Jatco JF414E became such an automatic transmission. We will deal with it now.
How to check the oil level in an automatic transmission on a Lada Granta
Every car owner should make it a rule to regularly check the ATF level. Checking the oil level in the Lada Granta automatic transmission will not cause difficulties even for a beginner. The whole process is almost the same as checking the lubricant level in the engine. True, the dipstick in this case is located in a rather inconvenient place (under the air filter). For this reason, the filter will have to be removed to gain access to the dipstick.
When checking, it is important to pay attention not only to the level, but also to the appearance and smell of ATF on the dipstick. Regardless of the color of this liquid (this indicator changes during operation, the liquid may darken), it should be transparent, without foreign solid inclusions. There should also be no burning smell. Chips and a burning smell in the oil are signs of problems in the gearbox and harbingers of repairs.
Why might oil leak?
Transmission malfunctions are accompanied by characteristic sounds, which determine the area of the breakdown. In addition, there are other factors that are a signal for repair of the unit.
If there is noise in the gearbox, the bearings or gears are most likely worn out. The problem can be corrected by replacing parts. The problem may arise due to a lack of the required amount of lubricant. In this case, it is necessary to add fluid to the automatic transmission urgently.
An automatic transmission oil change on a Grant may be required as a result of a leak being detected. Before you begin the filling procedure, it is necessary to determine the cause of the oil leak. Characteristic spots on a problem area or puddles of liquid on the asphalt will indicate a damaged unit.
The most common cause of oil leakage on LADA GRANTA is:
- wear of oil seals, hinge or rod - the problem can be corrected by replacing damaged parts;
- loose fastening of the crankcase, box cover or poor sealing of the assembly - it is recommended to replace the gaskets or sealing agent.
What oil to fill in the Lada Granta automatic transmission and how to replace it
If we consider the question of what is the best oil to fill in the automatic transmission of a Lada Granta automatic, it is best to follow the recommendations of the car manufacturer. They are listed in the manual. When adding oil to the level, you must use the same product that is already used in the transmission.
It is quite difficult to make a complete replacement in a garage environment. As a rule, it is possible to implement only a partial replacement. This is due to the fact that it is possible to “drive” the entire volume of old ATP out of the box only in a car service center. In any case, to replace you will need:
- inspection hole, overpass or lift;
- 19 key and 5 hex key;
- filler funnel with a long neck and extension hose;
- container for draining “working off”;
- fresh oil (the total volume in the Lada Granta automatic transmission is 5.1 liters, for a partial replacement you will need 2-3 liters).
It is recommended to follow the following procedure:
- Warm up the engine and drive the car onto a pit (overpass, lift);
- Turn off the engine and wait until the fan stops working;
- Use a key to unscrew the drain plug. Prepare a container, then unscrew the drain plug using a hexagon and drain the used oil;
- Replace the plugs by wiping them with a rag or a clean rag;
- Pour fresh fluid through the dipstick hole (the same amount as was drained);
- Place the dipstick in place, start the engine, warm it up, press the brake, move the selector lever to position R, after a minute to position D, then return to neutral position (N). Stop the engine and check the oil level on the dipstick.
- If the level is normal, install the air filter, then drive 10-15 km (warm up the automatic transmission), then repeat checking the level using the dipstick on a warm automatic transmission.
Partial replacement
Everything discussed below can be done at your own peril and risk. If there is an overflow or rubbish gets into the box, you only have yourself to blame. In total, we will replace 2-3 liters of fluid (the total volume is 5.1 liters):
- We take out the automatic transmission dipstick;
- We assemble a structure from tubes d=8 mm. We insert one free tube into the filling hole (see photo);
Oil pumping system
Fill with fresh transmission fluid
Don't forget to return the dipstick to its rightful place. Reassemble the remaining components.
After all the steps, the old oil in the automatic transmission will be mixed with the new one. But this process will end after 100-200 km. The “partial replacement” is then repeated, and a total of 3-4 liters of “old” material will be replaced.
