  5. As soon as the old auto lubricant stops dripping from the drain plug, you need to screw in a new filter, then screw the plug into place and carefully clamp it with a wrench. When tightening the filter, you should pour a little oil into it and lubricate the rubber gasket, which will prevent it from burning to the threads and will ensure better sealing of the system.
  6. We unscrew the filler plug located on the cylinder head. We recommend adding oil using a funnel to avoid spilling it on the engine. Subsequently, such spilled liquid will burn for a long time and cause an unpleasant odor.
  7. After filling three liters, you should check the dipstick, which will allow you to determine how much oil you have poured into the engine. If necessary, add fluid so that the level is between maximum and minimum.
  8. Close the filler plug and start the car. Let the engine run for a few minutes, then turn off the engine and check the lubrication level again.
  9. Inspect the car for leaks and, if necessary, tighten the oil filter or drain plug in the crankcase.

5W-40 or 5W-30 is a good synthetic oil characterized by excellent viscosity parameters. Such oils ideally resist oxidation; they can be used in engines operating under heavy loads or during hot periods of the year. Based on this, there is no need to change the oil frequently. If there is a need to reduce the load on a brand new Nine engine, it is better to purchase synthetic oil of the 5W-40/5W-30 type, which has:

  • reduced fluid friction;
  • high viscosity, due to which the load is removed from the battery and starter when the engine is turned on.

Which oil will be better

So:

  • Amsoil professional oil is an excellent option for synthetic engine oil that can cope with various tasks even in situations where it has been used for a relatively long time. It is worth noting the 0W-30 oil series, ideal for hot summers.
  • Castrol Edge with Syntec Technology is more suitable for new cars. This oil is suitable for those car owners whose cars mileage exceeds the average. This composition does not need to be changed frequently and provides adequate protection against wear of parts. The organic combination of the additive with a standard synthetic composition is also appreciated. This combination makes it possible to reduce friction, save fuel and improve engine performance.
  • Mobil 1 oil is perhaps the most famous oil used by the large automobile concerns Porsche and Mercedes. The reason for this popularity is the highest performance and extended life of the car engine. Despite the existing advantages, not all car owners will be able to afford such luxury.

Changing engine oil is easier than choosing it; if the procedure is being performed for the first time, you just need to watch the video and photo once, and you don’t have to go to a service station, you can actually do everything yourself without anyone’s help. It will also be useful to provide instructions and advice on selecting engine oil. Since this is a mandatory and important composition for the normal functioning of the engine and the entire vehicle system, it is recommended to buy good quality oil, the price of which cannot be underestimated.

The procedure for replacing engine oil on a VAZ 2109-2108

So, when the engine is hot, you need to place a container of at least 4 liters under the pan and unscrew the plug, which is clearly shown in the photo below:

When the nut rotates freely, you can unscrew it completely by hand so as not to drop the plug into the container with the waste:

And we wait at least 5 minutes until all the waste drains from the pan, and then you can immediately screw the plug into place:

Now you need to unscrew the oil filter, which is located on the right side (in the direction of travel of the car) of the VAZ 2109-2108 engine at the bottom. For clarity, this entire procedure is shown in the photo below:

If you can’t do this by hand, you can resort to using a puller. This is what it all looks like in practice:

Then we take a new filter, pour oil into about half of its capacity and be sure to lubricate the rubber seal:

Then we screw it into place. Keep in mind that you need to tighten it by hand, you don’t need to use any tools, otherwise you may not be able to unscrew it later!

Now unscrew the filler plug, as clearly shown in the photo:

And fill in about 3.5 liters of fresh oil:

After a few minutes, pull out the dipstick and check the level. On VAZ 2109-2108 cars it should be between the MIN and MAX marks - closer to the maximum mark. We put the plug in place and start the engine. During the first start after replacement, the oil pressure indicator lamp may light for a couple of seconds, after which it will go out.

Don’t forget to change your engine oil regularly and your car’s engine will serve you well and for a long time.

A little history

What lubricants were popular in the USSR? The most common gear oil at that time was TAD-17I. This product was created specifically for helical and hypoid gears. However, for some reasons, the TAD-17I turned out to be unsuitable for use at modern checkpoints. Its increased viscosity and special additives did not contribute to the complete formation of a film on the working surfaces of the synchronizers.

In this regard, the alignment of the angular velocity of the gears and the coupling was not ensured. Therefore, the gears on the transmissions of the “nines” were engaged with very great effort, and during the shift, the characteristic sound of gears jamming was formed. All this not only created discomfort while driving, but also significantly reduced the life of the gearbox, which led to accelerated breakdown.

According to the state standard, substances of the TM-1 and TM-2 groups turned out to be more suitable oils for “nines”, which ensured a longer service life and durability of gearbox parts. At the same time, the popular TAD-17I complied with the TM-5 standard, so using it on new transmissions was simply impractical, since the main pair on the “eights” and “nines” had not a hypoid, but a helical gear.

Material selection

The modern market offers a fairly large variety of lubricants, thereby complicating the choice between them. Various types of lubricants are suitable for the Russian model.

The main thing when choosing is to be guided by the following conditions:

  • Buy a product that meets the manufacturer's requirements.
  • Do not replace expensive material with cheap one.

As for oil with a mineral base, its use in used vehicle systems is considered inappropriate.

You should choose oil not by a well-known brand, but by viscosity and chemical structure, because a brand is not always a “useful” purchase. So, a car enthusiast can easily choose an analogue of the branded composition and at the same time save money. But do not forget that in most cases, “self-diagnosis” of the mixture does not lead to anything good; this procedure should be entrusted to specialists working in the relevant field.
