Since there is quite a bit of space under the hood of this car model, the engine must be chosen from similar small cars.

When installing a new unit, you will not only have to redo the brackets and perform a number of other procedures, but also go through the car registration procedure again. When replacing engines, you will need to re-register the car with the traffic police. This need is due to the fact that there is a license plate on the engine block, which must be registered in the vehicle’s registration certificate.

True, the results obtained do not always satisfy motorists.

So, it’s worth comparing at least the total resource of domestic and foreign engines. For the first (specifically for the VAZ 2115) it is 250,000 kilometers, and for the second (similar in all other parameters) - 500,000 kilometers. Even this fact alone makes drivers think about installing an engine from a foreign car in a VAZ 2115.

That is why you should give preference to the most compatible engines. Another, no less optimal option is to upgrade the original engine. It will be much cheaper and will not cause any problems with the police.

How to improve the power of a standard VAZ 2110 engine

We can talk about improving power in more or less budgetary ways only in the context of VAZ injection engines. However, there are not many dozen carburetor cars left on the roads. Usually, VAZ 2110 owners who don’t have enough power from the stock engine simply want to do chip tuning of the ECU and get a serious increase in power, but it’s not that simple.

It should be taken into account that VAZ designers saved a lot when developing and assembling these engines. This means that the intake and exhaust will not be the best in their class, the fuel supply system will have its limitations, and some sensors, even after tuning the ECU, will not fully carry out the computer’s instructions.

For normal tuning you will need to perform the following set of actions:

  1. Air filtration system. It is worth installing a zero resistance filter and allowing the engine to breathe more easily.
  2. Throttle valve. There is no point in modifying it in any way. You can look on the market for a new damper with a larger hole diameter. This will allow you to immediately get a small increase in power.
  3. Inlet receiver. It’s worth replacing it with a more efficient one, but you can’t save money here. So, if you want to increase the power of your car on a budget, skip this point.
  4. Tuning camshafts will also not be cheap, but it is worth undertaking for good results. In the stock version, the shafts do not cope with the tasks very effectively, and replacing them with tuning parts will clearly add power and torque to the motor.
  5. An exhaust manifold. If air intake is already easier, the engine also needs to breathe out easier. Sports-type exhaust manifolds for the VAZ 2110 engine will greatly change your impression of operating a Russian car.
  6. Computer. And only at this stage can you touch the ECU settings in the Ten and adjust all the parameters to the new parts. It is important to manually configure all the necessary parameters after installing the above elements.

By the way, the increase in power can be quite serious. Up to 30-40% of stock values. But, of course, it is worth considering that tuning has many nuances. The service life of the engine will decrease, you will have to look into the piston group more often, change the rings, and treat the cylinder head. Also, consumption will obviously increase, miracles do not happen. But the machine will start to bring a lot of pleasure for relatively little money. If you wish, you can continue to work with the engine more deeply and get even more interesting changes. But remember that tuning engines with mileage over 200,000 km is deadly for such engines.

Engine dismantling process

Of course, the best option would be to replace the engine in a fully equipped workshop, but if this is not possible (and you really want to do tuning), then you should have the following minimum set of equipment:

  • winch, hoist or hydraulic lift;
  • shoes;
  • jacks;
  • cart;
  • knob with a set of heads;
  • spanners;
  • screwdrivers.

Dismantling is carried out in the following order:

  1. The car is stopped using a hand brake and shoes, which should be placed under the rear wheels.
  2. Place the front wheels on jacks.
  3. With the hood open, disconnect the “mass” terminal and all small hoses and tubes suitable for the engine.
  4. Seal the pipe inlets to the engine to prevent them from clogging.
  5. Disconnect the throttle cable from the throttle pipe and bracket.
  6. Disconnect the air intake hose together with its bracket.
  7. To dismantle the air filter - to do this, use a sharp blade to cut off the three rubberized supports, due to which it is attached to the engine body.
  8. Remove the hoses leading to the receiver.
  9. Disconnect the hose intended for purging the adsorber from the nozzle.
  10. Remove the wires suitable for the pipe, the ignition module, as well as all others connected to the internal combustion engine.
  11. Remove the engine splash guard by unscrewing the mounting bolts.
  12. Drain all the coolant by removing the plugs on the cylinder block and radiator (while opening the reservoir cap).
  13. Drain the oil by unscrewing the plug cap on the gearbox.
  14. Disconnect the clutch cable.
  15. Secure the hooks of the lifting device to the eye bolts located on the gearbox and on the cylinder block, and then remove the engine.

Installation of the new motor is carried out in exactly the same order, but in reverse order. Also, it is important not to forget to connect the wires of all sensors to the correct connectors and refill all technical fluids that were drained during dismantling (coolant and oil).

Despite the fact that some car enthusiasts advise first removing the gearbox and then removing the engine, it is strongly recommended to remove the engine together with the gearbox.

Major renovation


As an alternative replacement option, you can consider major repairs or tuning. Repairing your original engine will allow you to save a lot of money. And as a result, you will receive a unit that will be in no way inferior to the new engine you purchased. If it is necessary to increase power, it is enough to install larger cylinders and bore the block. You can also increase the compression and install a turbine. Such tuning will make your car a real “beast”. To extend the life of the power plant, you need to install high-quality parts and use good quality oil.

The easiest way to increase power is to bore the power plant by 3 mm for an 82 mm piston. To get a more torquey engine and to further increase the volume to 1.8 liters, you will have to increase the piston stroke to 84 mm.

One of the advantages of repair and tuning is that there is no need to re-register the car. You can spend the saved money, for example, on improving the braking system, increasing comfort, etc. You don’t have to do all this yourself. Even if you use the services of a car service, it will cost less than buying and installing a new engine.

In the mid-90s, a massive transition of Russian models from a carburetor to an injection power system began. This requalification also affected the VAZ 2107 and 21074 cars. As a result, the model received new elements that structurally distinguish it from its predecessor:

  • electric fuel pump. It takes fuel from the tank, maintaining constant pressure in the fuel line. The carburetor version had a mechanical fuel pump;
  • fuel injectors that inject directly into the combustion chamber. Therefore, the fuel-air mixture is formed directly in the combustion chamber. On the previous modification, the mixture was formed due to the opening of the carburetor air damper;
  • new engine control unit, which determines the moment of injection and forcibly performs it. The fuel mixture is forced into the cylinders by the injection system, while in the carburetor the fuel is supplied due to rarefied pressure after the valve opens.

Accordingly, the electrical circuit of the Lada has changed somewhat:

  • a wiring harness block was added to the fuel frame;
  • their wires were connected from the controller to the ignition system harness;
  • radiator sensors and a fan appeared;
  • the electric fuel pump was also connected to the circuit;
  • The VAZ 21074 injector itself received sensors for mass air flow, oxygen indicator, crankshaft position, as well as a special valve in the line itself.

A VAZ with an injector type engine has fewer problems. Many electronic equipment control relays are quite reliable. However, the system is still not without its shortcomings. Some chargers are not friendly with the battery, the control unit for the electro-pneumatic valve sometimes malfunctions, and the light switch does not work when the front door is opened.

The injection version of the “seven” has an electric fuel pump that provides the proper pressure at the outlet. It is an electric motor whose blades pump gasoline under high pressure into the system.

The electric pump is located in the fuel tank; when the ignition is turned on, it builds up operating pressure, after which it supplies fuel directly to the injectors. The VAZ 2107i injector is equipped with 4 nozzles. They are controlled by a microcontroller.
