16 valve engine

This is a more technically advanced brother of the 8-valve. In fact, it represents a deep modernization of the VAZ-21126 engine. The model received an intake receiver of variable length, due to which its power increased from 98 hp. up to 106 hp

Advantages of a 16-valve engine

If you tune the version with 16 valves, you can reduce the acceleration time of the car to 9 seconds. This is ideal for highways where speeds exceed 100 km/h. At these speeds, the 16-valve model feels more confident in handling.

The design of the internal combustion engine includes hydraulic compensators, which save the machine from zero maintenance with valve adjustment. There is a groove in the engine, so there is no need to be afraid that the valves will be bent.

Disadvantages of the 16-valve engine:

  • cost - in some versions of the Lada Granta, the price difference between models with 8 and 16 valves is 100,000 rubles.

In terms of torque, the 16-valve version is inferior to the 8-valve version. To spin the engine to 148 N*m, you will need more than 4000 rpm.

Among the design flaws, it is worth mentioning the problem of spark plug wells sweating with a mileage of 10,000 km or more. Oil begins to drip inside. This is due to the use of sealant rather than gasket as a seal.

I bought a Lada Granta FL with engine 11182

I had two cars - a Lada Kalina and a 2014 Lada Granta in a liftback body. I did the math and realized that maintaining two cars is too expensive. Yes, and I wanted a new car. Kalina was already 15 years old, and the Granta was 7. At the same time, the Granta did not require attention to the chassis, but did require attention to the anti-gravity thresholds. And besides, it was equipped even without an electric booster.

I thought about it and decided to take a new grant, from the showroom with 0 mileage. My desire just coincided with the transition from engine 11186 to 11182. As a result, I took a new Grant FL in the comfort package with engine 11182 90 hp. In this post I will share my impressions of this engine and car.

PS I didn’t buy a used foreign car for one reason - it’s used! I just wanted a new car. I have already gone through the path when you buy a car, then change the brakes, oils, timing belt, and so on and so forth. No, enough. I take a taxi very often. The same Solaris or Logan 2 is no better than the new Grant.

On the first day after purchase I drove 200 kilometers. I specially went out onto the highway and began to leisurely run the car in, I didn’t drive more than 93, thereby irritating everyone around me. Another 2800 kilometers will need to be driven in this mode. When you don’t do it on purpose, you only have time to change the oil. And here another 2800 km seems like an eternity.

Impressions from work 11182.

As I already said, I had a Kalina with a 21114 engine with a heavy piston and a Grant with an 11186 with a lightweight piston. There is a huge difference between these cars. 11186 was better in everything - the car was more dynamic, accelerated better, and it was easier to overtake. Like 21114, he did not eat an ounce of butter. Strictly looked after 5-6 thousand from replacement to replacement. This engine was also much quieter than the 21114.

After the first 200 km, I realized one thing - 11182 wants to go. He "rips" you out at traffic lights. It starts moving after lightly pressing the gas pedal. The Granta is a lightweight car and the 11182 can make it a very sharp car. However, 11186 was also very playful, but here you can feel it from the first kilometer.

Is the 11182 engine quieter than the 11186? In the salon - yes. But there may be one nuance here - the Shumka in Granta FL may simply be better. I also want to draw attention to the slight vibration at XX. You can feel it. On the street I don't see much difference between these two engines. As for me, they rumble, plus or minus, the same.

The standard howl of the 2181 box has not gone away. How she howled and howled. The same howl was on the first grant, the same howl on the new grant. In principle, it doesn’t bother me, I’m already used to this howling. At 1000 km I will change the oil in the box. Then I will do another oil change at 3000 km, after break-in.

ZIC 75w-85 did not change the sound of the box on the previous grant. There is no need to try to fix this with oil.

As for the engine oil, it is at maximum. The oil is still very light, so you are unlikely to see its level in the photo. But I was able to see the level.

Another nuance is vibration in the cabin from the engine. 750 rpm is no joke. Vibration is felt at XX. At the same time, the engine runs quieter, but there is vibration. By the way, they have already written about it on the Internet.

After work, I ran another 200 kilometers. In total, I have already driven 430 km. There are no complaints about the gearbox or engine. Except of course the signature howl, which will never be fixed. The most interesting thing is that I had a Lada Kalina and there was no transmission noise on it. A friend has a Lada Priora and there is no transmission noise there either. How so?

Well, where would we be without the old VAZ jamb?:) All 8 bedbugs were sweating. And this one is apparently no exception. On the previous Kalina and Grant, I solved the fogging once and for all - I simply changed the gasket to a red one from Rosteco (if they are just repackers!)

I'm not the only one with a sweaty lid. There is already a video on YouTube where the author’s lid is sweating and sweating in the same place as mine. But since this is a “feature”, this feature is unlikely to be a warranty issue.

But in general, at the moment everything is fine. Everything works, the car drives, the air conditioner cools, the steering wheel steers.

In total my mileage is 650 km. Checked the oil level. The oil does not darken yet, the level remains almost at maximum.

I’ll say it again about engine 11182 - there is vibration in the cabin at idle. I won’t get tired of repeating this. Be prepared for this. We turn on the air conditioning, the revolutions increase to almost 1000 and the vibration disappears - the solution to the problem!

I have no complaints about the dynamics. The engine pulls very well.

I paid attention to the factory sound insulation. It turns out that the doors and roof are noisy from the factory. Unlike the 2019 Granta Sedan Classic Optima, which had no noise at all. This grant has sound insulation and you can feel it. The doors are heavy and dull.

Why didn’t she howl on the 2006 viburnum, but she howls on the 2021 grant? How does this happen? The car came out with extras of 650,000 rubles, and it also came with a howl as a gift. The questions are actually rhetorical, the box works, everything is fine, if there were no howling, everything would be great.

Traveled 1500 km. In the morning I checked the oil level - at the maximum. For 1500 the oil did not eat. It just got a little darker. Already makes me happy. The dealer said it was filled with semi-synthetic. Don't know.

Today is an interesting day - we need to change the oil in the engine and gearbox. In general, I planned to do this for 1000 km, but circumstances were such that there was simply no time. So I changed today.

Price list for oil change at the office. The dealer is not happy - almost 800 rubles (yes, I was not mistaken), 300 per box. In my previous cars I filled Mobil Super 3000 X1 5w40 and Lukoil Genesis Armortech 5w40. But since Lukoil went crazy and in a year rose from 1400 to 2200 rubles, I decided not to buy it, but to buy Mobil, which, by the way, has not risen in price by a ruble.

Just in case, I took a quality certificate from Mobil and was ready to show the vaccination certificate if they didn’t want to let me into the repair area.

But everything worked out. They let me in without any questions, only made me sign the safety instructions and gave me a short briefing.

The master did everything carefully, even I didn’t change the oil like that on previous cars. Just great!

The gearbox was filled with LADA Ultra 75w-90 semi-synthetic. In fact, this is Rosneft 75w-90. Not a bad oil.

After driving 1500 km, the factory oil was light, I thought it would be worse. After changing the oil, the rear one began to turn on much easier. Owners of this box will understand that reverse gear is a pain. Overall there are few changes. Howls the same way :)

Mileage is about 3200 km. The run-in was completed. I drove 1700 km using Mobil Super 3000 5w40 oil. The oil darkened slightly, the level remained at maximum. There are no complaints about the engine, it pulls well, overtakes well, and with air conditioning it drives great on the highway.

As for the gearbox, everything is the same. Howled, howled and will howl.

Traveled a total of 5500 km. No, I'm not a taxi driver. It's just summer and we have to travel a lot. I'm very pleased with the car. Acceleration, dynamics, ground clearance - everything is on par. Consumption according to the on-board computer is on average 7 liters, it feels the same as on the 11186 engine.

The oil level has dropped slightly below the maximum mark, but this is nonsense. This is most likely due to constant driving on the highway at speeds of 100 km/h+.

The engine has become noticeably quieter, that's a fact! Apparently everything worked out. The box also became quieter. No, the howling has not gone away, but before it was in almost all gears, now only the second. The howl is much quieter than on my previous grant in 2014, which ZIC 75w-85 oil did not help and which I definitely won’t be pouring into our cars anymore.

I'm pleased with the package. You don’t need to do anything other than little things. I am 100% satisfied with the stock music. Parking sensors in the rear would certainly be a plus, but the car is small and visibility is good. I park it 30 cm from the fence easily and without parking sensors.

The car has traveled 15,000 km. Passed the first MOT in my life. I paid 4,100 rubles for the work, and this took into account that the oil was mine. Lew Lukoil Genesis Armortech 5w40. For the first time I added 200-300 grams to the engine after 7000 km. This is most likely due to highway mileage at speeds of 110 km/h.

The engine runs quietly, there are no extraneous sounds (except for the clutch).

New 8-valve VAZ-11182

In 2022, AvtoVAZ introduced a new engine for the Lada Granta FL. This is AR16SEg2 or VAZ-11182. Its main feature is an increase in torque. At 1000 rpm, 80% of the torque is already available.

Design changes include:

  • renewal of the connecting rod and piston group;
  • modernization of the gas distribution mechanism;
  • crankshaft modernization.

Advantages of VAZ-11182:

  • reduced consumption;
  • reduction in switching frequency;
  • no need to adjust valves up to 90,000 km;
  • groove;
  • absence of oil drips due to six-bolt fastening of the oil cap and improved design of the silicone gasket;
  • use of Renault spare parts;
  • resource 180,000 km.

Disadvantages of the VAZ-11182:

  • lack of hydraulic compensators;
  • complicated valve clearance adjustment (at a mileage of 90,000 km);
  • increased compression ratio, for better torque you will need to fill in AI-95;
  • high cost of spare parts.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantage of the motor is the fact that the manufacturer has already managed to increase the power to 64.2 kW. In addition, it is possible to boost the motor without loss of service life. That is, the owner will not have to make major repairs more often than scheduled.

The disadvantages of ICE 11186 are:

  • “meeting” of the piston with the valve in the event of a break in the timing belt drive;
  • periodic valve adjustment;
  • non-repairable ignition unit.


Adjustment of valves

The advantages of the engine in comparison with the existing versions of the internal combustion engine of the AvtoVAZ manufacturer at the time of its creation are:

  • do-it-yourself overhaul after the piston group has reached the end of its service life at least 3 times using different repair kits;
  • increased volumes of combustion chambers;
  • built-in piston cooling system;
  • the hinged one is secured with brackets and has automatic tensioners;
  • modernization of the cylinder head and crankshaft;
  • piston and crankshaft relief;
  • use of parts from existing engines.

Therefore, during repairs and tuning there are no problems with spare parts and components. Maintenance is cheaper than foreign-made engines.

Compared to previous models, the Lada Granta turned out to be quite a playful and fast car. This is confirmed not only by successes in sports competitions. Reliability, weaknesses, maintainability

Despite the presence of serious weaknesses (more on this below), most car owners and car service technicians consider the VAZ-11186 a reliable and economical engine. According to their numerous reviews, the motor differs from its predecessors for the better.

For example, a lot of interesting things can be found in engine discussions on various forums. Thus, a car owner writes: “... the mileage is already 240,000. It doesn’t eat oil. Lew Shel 10W-40. The car works in a taxi for days.” His interlocutor Alexander expresses himself in the same tone: “... the mileage is 276,000, the engine runs powerfully and stably. True, there was a re-flashing, and one more time I changed the pump with a belt and a roller.”

The reliability of the internal combustion engine is clearly indicated by the excess of the service life. A lot of engines easily exceeded the mileage level of 200 thousand km and successfully approached 300 thousand. At the same time, no significant breakdowns were observed in the engines.

The reason for the increased service life lies in timely engine maintenance, the use of high-quality fuels and lubricants and a careful driving style.

Easy starting of the internal combustion engine in severe frosts is noted, which is a good indicator for the Russian climate.

Additionally, it should be noted that the engine has a good safety margin, allowing tuning to double the power. This indicator clearly indicates the reliability of the motor.

Weak spots

Car owners note several weak points of the engine. Their occurrence is provoked by both car enthusiasts and factory defects.

A lot of troubles are caused by the water pump (pump) and the timing belt tensioner pulley. These two nodes have a low operating life. As a rule, their failure leads to a break or shearing of the timing belt teeth.

Further events develop according to the classical scheme: valve bending - engine overhaul. Fortunately, after the modernization of the CPG in July 2018, the valves remain intact when the belt breaks, and the engine simply stalls.

The next common malfunction is knocking noises in the unit when operating at idle speed. Most often they are caused by unadjusted thermal valve clearances. But both pistons and liners of the crankshaft main or connecting rod journals can knock. The exact address of the fault can be identified by engine diagnostics at a specialized service station.

The motor electrician is often concerned. Complaints are caused by low-quality sensors, a high-voltage coil (ignition unit) and an unfinished Itelma ECU. Electrical faults are characterized by floating idle speed and engine tripping. In addition, the engine sometimes simply stalls while driving.

VAZ-11186 is prone to overheating. The culprit is a thermostat that is not highly reliable.

Oil leakage is quite common, especially from under the valve covers. In this case, you should tighten the cover fastening or replace its gasket.
