Changing the gearbox oil in a Chevrolet Lanos with your own hands

According to the manufacturer, the Chevrolet Lanos gearbox does not need to replace the transmission fluid, and once filled with oil will be enough for the entire service life of the car. At the same time, it is not specified whether this means a real service life of, say, twenty years, or a warranty period; possible accidents are also not taken into account. Wear and production are influenced by many other factors - climatic conditions, long periods of idle time in traffic jams, and poor quality of roads.

The practice of car owners and the observations of experts contradict the statements of the manufacturer - in order not to encounter the problem of replacing the gearbox, which, by the way, is very expensive, the transmission fluid in Lanos should be changed periodically. And car owners themselves find it more pleasant to drive a car with clean oil.

Another point is the intensity of use of manual transmission. If you are a fan of long car trips around Russia or use a car as a work tool, the wear and tear on your vehicle’s gearbox will be much higher than, say, the owner of a Chevrolet Lanos, who once a week goes to the market for groceries or to visit his grandmother. good German roads.

If you are a fan of hard driving or operating conditions are particularly unfavorable, you can change the oil in the Lanos gearbox more often - this will not cause harm in any case.

Changing the oil in a gearbox is not as difficult a task as it might seem at first glance. This does not require a special tool or significant financial investments, and we will discuss all the important points in this article.

The process of changing the oil in the Lanos gearbox

If you still don’t know how to change the oil in a Lanos gearbox, then read on. To replace you will need the following:

  • 2 liters of gear oil;
  • a good socket wrench for “13”;
  • socket wrench (for convenience) to “13”;
  • new gearbox gasket;
  • container for draining old oil.

First of all, you need to remove the engine protection, if you have one installed. Then, having prepared a container (wide basin, bucket, pan...), you can begin to unscrew the transmission pan. If you change the oil alone, the pan should be removed in the following sequence:

  • loosen all bolts;
  • unscrew all bolts except two;
  • holding the pallet with one hand, unscrew the remaining two bolts with the other;
  • place the container and release the tray;
  • if it does not fall into the container, pry it out with a screwdriver.

After removing the pan, allow the oil to drain thoroughly. In order to drain the oil completely, you need to raise the left side of the car as high as possible (the front left wheel should lift off the ground by about 15-17 cm) and spin the wheel in both directions in neutral gear. However, this procedure can be neglected. In this case, their boxes will drain approximately 1.6 liters of oil. 200 grams will remain in the box - no big deal.

After the oil has drained, you can put the pan back in place. Keep in mind that there are two types of pan gasket - 10 and 11 holes. You should find out which one you have installed in advance. You can buy a gasket at any store. Catalog numbers of gaskets:

  • 96179241 – gearbox gasket 10 holes
  • 96829393 – gearbox gasket 11 holes

If you did not purchase a gasket or bought the wrong one, then in this case you can make it yourself from paronite. Well, if there is no paronitis, then use a regular automotive sealant, such as ABRO (black, red).

After installing the pan, unscrew the control plug, which is located near the right CV joint in the direction of travel.

Please note that the control plug contains a metal catcher - a magnet. The plug must be washed thoroughly

This is what it looks like before and after cleaning:

Now you need to unscrew the breather, through which fresh oil is poured. The breather is located near the gear shift rod. Before unscrewing the breather, you should clean the surface of the box around it so that dirt does not get inside.

Now, using a watering can, begin pouring fresh oil in small portions. You need to fill until oil begins to flow out of the inspection hole. Next, you need to tighten the control plug and add another 100 grams of oil. In total, you will be able to pour in 1.7-1.8 liters.

At this point, the procedure for changing the oil in the Lanos gearbox can be considered complete. Screw the breather into place and install the engine protection.

What kind of oil to pour into the Lanos gearbox

The manufacturer recommends filling the Lanos gearbox with SAE 80W GL-4 oil. This type of oil is mineral. There is an opinion that factory oil must be changed to synthetic. Yes, indeed, it is better to change the factory oil, but not necessarily to synthetic. The fact is that no one knows what was poured into the box at the factory. It is quite possible that this is not 80W at all, but some cheap oil that really thickens in cold weather.

If you operate your car mainly in the summer or in winter the temperature does not drop to more than -20 degrees, then the original GM SAE 80W oil is quite suitable for you. Also keep in mind that a drop in temperature below -20 for one or two weeks throughout the year should not be taken into account. As practice has shown, the original GM SAE 80W oil or its analogue from other manufacturers (not to be confused with SAE 80W90) performs well in cold weather. Catalog number of the original gear oil:

If you do not want to use mineral oil, then it can be replaced with synthetic or semi-synthetic with a viscosity index of 75W80 or 80W85.

If in your region the air temperature drops below -20 for a fairly long period, and in summer there is no heat over 40 degrees, then in this case you can safely use synthetic oil 75W90, 80W90 GL-4. But in hot weather, such oil does not have a positive effect. There are many practical cases where 75W90 oil caused a hum in the box and difficult gear shifting with shocks.

Remember that in any case, you must give preference to the factory recommendation, namely SAE 80W GL-4. It’s better to wait one or two weeks in winter, warming up the car for a couple of minutes longer, than to encounter transmission problems due to oil that is less viscous than necessary.

Best the enemy of the good. Here, the best is 75W90, the good is 80W.

Checking the volume and condition of the oil

Replacing a Chevrolet Lanos heater radiator
Chevrolet Lanos is equipped with a dipstick, which can be found in the engine compartment. The dipstick has Max and Min marks. If, after removing the dipstick, it turns out that the oil print does not exceed any of these marks (that is, it is below the Min level), then you will need to add fluid to a certain rate. The normal level is considered to be when the consumable is between Max and Min. Overfilling the oil is highly undesirable, as this will negatively affect the service life of the gearbox.

It is also important to understand that monitoring the oil level alone will not be enough.

It is equally important to check the condition of the oil. It depends on the quality of the oil whether it is worth carrying out a complete replacement, or limiting it to just one addition of fluid.

With high mileage, or if the oil is not changed on time, the situation can really become more complicated. In this case, there is only one way out - urgently perform a replacement, otherwise it will come to a major overhaul of the gearbox. You can verify that the oil is unsuitable not only by the high mileage, but also by the color and smell of the oil. For example, the liquid may smell burnt and be dark brown in color. Moreover, spoiled oil may contain various deposits, even metal shavings. Having made sure that the oil has lost its beneficial properties, move on to the next point.

How much to fill

The Chevrolet Lanos five-speed manual transmission consumes about 1.8 liters of oil. This volume can be introduced after the remaining old fluid has been removed. Without this procedure, much less liquid will enter. A complete oil change is also performed in a garage, using a special flush. First, drain the old oil, then fill in the flush and run it through the entire gearbox system. After this, the used flushing is drained, and new oil is introduced in a volume of 1.8 liters. The liquid is adjusted using a dipstick.

Changing the oil in the Lanos gearbox

Chevrolet Lanos fuses and relays

Is it necessary and how to change the oil in the Lanos gearbox? This question is probably of interest to many Chevrolet Lanos owners. Almost all books on the repair and operation of Lanos say that the gearbox oil is filled for the entire life of the car. However, what is the lifespan of a car? No one can answer this question. From this we can draw a completely logical conclusion that it is definitely worth changing the oil. At what mileage to do this is up to you. But if your car has already covered 100 thousand kilometers, then it’s time to change it.

So, what do we get after changing the oil? Actually, the advantages are obvious:

  • you will know exactly what is in the box;
  • the ability to fill in high-quality synthetic, and most importantly modern, oil;
  • easy gear shifting in cold weather when using synthetics.

Additional Information

After replacing the Daewoo Lanos box lubricant, you need to do a test drive. But before that, you need to move the gear shift lever through all positions. Speeds should change smoothly and accurately. Without extraneous noise, jerking and other defects.

If the gear selector does not select speeds accurately, and also if there is a lot of play in the lever when changing gears, it is necessary to diagnose and repair the rocker mechanism. The Daewoo Lanos repair blog has a detailed photo report on how to inspect and repair the backstage .

In the process of changing transmission oil, it makes sense to carry out related service work. When the transmission oil is drained, it becomes possible to replace the axle seals.

In parallel with box oil, one should not forget about the need to periodically replace other service fluids. Engine oil especially often needs to be replaced. The ZAZ Lanos repair blog has a very informative review on how to change engine oil . At the same time, the power steering fluid also needs to be changed periodically. The ZAZ Lanos repair blog has a good photo report on the topic of replacing the power steering service fluid .

Step-by-step description of changing the oil in a manual transmission for Lanos 1.5 and 1.6 and Chance 1.5

Chevrolet lanos (Chevrolet Lanos)

Lanos cars with an engine capacity of 1.5 and 1.6 liters (and Chance 1.5) use the same gearboxes, so the instructions for changing transmission oil will be identical. Before you begin the procedure, you will need to purchase, in addition to a canister of transmission fluid, a new gearbox housing gasket and sealant. The use of various cleaners and other liquids to remove contaminants is contraindicated (this also applies to engine cleaners). This is not only unnecessary costs, but a complete lack of efficiency.

You need to focus on the gasket, since they come in 10 and 11 holes. The second option is extremely rare, and they are used for boxes from Chevrolet Lacetti. Both original samples and high-quality options are produced, which are 2-3 times cheaper. Provided that the gearbox oil is changed in a timely manner, it is not necessary to use branded Lanos transmission pan seals.

The entire replacement process takes no more than 1 hour. It looks like this:

  1. It is better to place the car in a pit, which greatly simplifies the work.
  2. It is recommended to replace it after a trip so that the transmission fluid is viscous.
  3. The engine protection is removed (if any), and we proceed to loosen the 10 (11) bolts securing the sump cover. To do this, use the key at “13”.
  4. We first prepare a container (preferably flat) into which the waste will be poured. Having loosened the bolts, lightly pry up the lid with a screwdriver and place the container.
  5. After the liquid stops leaking from under the cover, you can unscrew all the bolts and carefully remove it, draining the remainder.
  6. Raise the left front side of the car using a jack to drain the remaining 200 grams of oil from the gearbox.
  7. Next, we proceed to remove the old gasket (even if it is well preserved, which is extremely rare, it is still better to replace it). We clean the inside of the removed cover, where there are metal shavings.
  8. We unscrew the filler (control) plug, which is located just above the cap (its location is shown in the photo with an arrow).
  9. It has a built-in removable magnet that acts as a filter, catching metal shavings and holding them. The plug and magnet must be thoroughly cleaned.
  10. There is a breather near the battery in the gear selection area. It has a built-in valve, which opens when the pressure inside the box increases, thereby releasing excess gases. Through this plug you can also pour oil into the gearbox, which is much more convenient. We unscrew this plug to pour oil through the hole.
  11. Using sealant, you need to coat the gasket on both sides with it, and install the pan in place, tightening it with 10 (11) bolts to “13”. There is no need to tighten them too much to avoid stripping the threads.
  12. Let's start pouring lubricant. For this purpose, special extension tubes may be provided in the canisters. If you don’t have them, you can make your own (using a hose) or use a syringe. The larger the volume of the syringe, the faster the process of filling the gearbox.
  13. Oil is poured until it reaches the minimum level in the control hole. The inconvenience of the method of filling through the breather hole is that an assistant needs to control the filling of the box from below the car.
  14. Screw the control (filler) plug into place and add another 100 ml of oil. This is not necessary if all the oil has been drained from the box.

Changing the oil in a Lanos gearbox is a simple procedure that takes no more than 1 hour. In the video below you can see in detail how this procedure is carried out.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=WpiYPwOiQHQ%3F

The costs are minimal, but such actions allow you to extend the service life of the gearbox by reducing the amount of metal shavings and updating the lubricant. Don’t forget to make a note when the oil in the box was changed so that you can carry out the procedure in a timely manner next time.

Operating procedure

You will need a garage with an inspection hole, a lot of rags, a bucket where you will pour oil and acetone for degreasing when installing the gasket.

  1. Drive the car into a garage or box that has an inspection hole, or, in extreme cases, onto an overpass. When driving onto an overpass, be careful not to miss the track. And in the pit you really need a bright flashlight.
  2. Manual transmission housing Chevrolet Lanos

    Thoroughly clean the lower part of the crankcase from dust and dirt. Use pre-prepared rags. If the underside of the car is very dirty, it is better to pre-wash it with a high-pressure jet before entering the pit or garage. Or do it while on an overpass.

  3. Remove the manual transmission gasket. You can use a screwdriver to pry the gasket and pull it out. You can throw it away. Usually the gasket is pinched and is no longer suitable for reuse. Try not to confuse it with a new gasket.
  4. Take the key 19 and unscrew the manual transmission cover. A spanner wrench is very suitable here. It’s possible that other car parts will get in the way under the bottom, and it’s easier to put the wrench on the nut with a socket head. Better yet, use an end cap if you have one of that size.
  5. Manual transmission crankcase cover with gasket

    Drain the oil into a bucket or other container. Try not to drain it on the floor - then you may slip and fall in the hole. Considering that it is usually dark there, and the car can be on jacks and they can be caught when falling, this is quite a viable recommendation.

  6. Wipe the bottom of the manual transmission housing again. It is possible that during operation you left oil stains that will interfere with the normal installation of the gasket. Do not wipe the entire bottom of the crankcase, but only the area where the gasket is installed.
  7. Degrease the surface with acetone.
    See above recommendation. Degrease only the area where the gasket is installed. After degreasing, remove traces of acetone. Be careful when working with it - be sure to wear glasses so that drops of acetone do not get into your eyes! After all, you work from the bottom up. Filling transmission oil into the gearbox
  8. Apply sealant to the gasket and the area of its contact with the crankcase surface, put the gasket in place and tighten the crankcase plug. Tighten the nut well. A nut that is not tightened sufficiently, although it will not pinch the gasket, may loosen during operation, and oil will begin to leak out of the crankcase.
  9. Unscrew the filler plug and fill in new oil up to the plug. And again - twist it tighter. Although there is no longer such vibration and danger, there is still a risk that it will fly out.
  10. Tighten the plug, remove any remaining oil with a rag and prepare the car for use. At first, it will be best to ride in a low gear. Then switch to a higher one. Pay attention to the noise - it should decrease.

That's it, you can leave.

How much oil does a Lanos box need to change?

The amount of lubricant for the Lanos gearbox depends on the type of gearbox (manual or automatic). The volume of transmission fluid in the Lanos gearbox according to the type of transmission:

  • the volume of fluid in the automatic transmission installed on Daewoo Lanos and ZAZ Lanos cars is 7 liters (cars with engines of 1.4 - 1.6 liters);
  • the volume of fluid in the manual transmission installed on Lanos cars is 1.8 liters (cars with engines of 1.4 - 1.6 liters);

In this case, it is often impossible to drain all the oil from the box without disassembling the unit. This means that in reality the replacement volume may differ. It is usually possible to fill about 1.7 liters of oil into a manual transmission, while the amount for replacement in an automatic transmission will depend on the replacement method itself.

When partially changing the oil in an automatic transmission without removing the pan, 3-4 liters may be required, while a spill replacement will require about 7-8 liters or more

It is also important to prevent oil overflow, especially in the case of automatic transmissions. To do this, you need to know how to correctly set the oil level in the automatic transmission.

Reviews

Igor, Peter. This car is clearly designed for taxi work, although the era of such cars has long passed. But I am still content with the 2009 Lanos, with a 1.5 engine (86 hp) and a manual transmission. Fuel consumption is 12-13 liters in the city, and this is with a manual transmission! However, it’s no secret that the car is very thirsty, but it supports 92 gasoline.

Valentin, Nizhny Novgorod region. I have a 2008 Lanos with a 1.5-liter engine. The five-speed manual has well-chosen gear ratios, which allows you to unleash the potential of a very high-torque 4-cylinder engine. In terms of dynamics and speed, the car is comparable to Kalina and Logan, and handling is closer to ten. In the city, everything is fine with the sharpness and flakiness of the steering wheel, but on the highway you have to steer.

I decided to change the oil in the gearbox - logbook of ZAZ Sens 1.3 2008 on DRIVE2

I decided to replace it, bought a square, removed the left wheel, even though everyone assured me that changing the oil due to its complexity (that there is supposedly one plug, which is also the filler and drain plug, but this is not so, there are 2 of them) costs from 800 rubles. but I decided to replace it with a friend. 1) if you raise it on the stops and remove the wheel, then there is excellent access to it, someone tried to change the oil and slightly gouged the square (8/3) and it’s crap (sorry for the rudeness :)) but after cleaning everything super

2) after I started draining I was shocked

you can see where the drain plug is (the filler plug is to the right and a little higher)

TAD17 was flooded here, who knows, will understand

3) for comparison what I filled in

4) a 2.5 liter hose was included and pulled through the hood compartment for convenience

5) after everything was tightened, I was pleasantly surprised, the gearbox became softer, before the replacement, the first gear was stuck in with considerable effort, now it’s soft, the rest is to change the rocker until complete ecstasy

Which oil to choose for replacement

The manufacturer recommends filling the gearbox with SAE 80W GL-4 oil. This is a mineral oil that feels great at sub-zero temperatures of at least 20 degrees. Many experts advise pouring 75W90 oil into the Lanos gearbox.

The cost of original General Motors oil 1940 182 is about 750 rubles per liter. From 75W90 oils you can choose the following:

  • Liqui Moly SAE 75W-90, API GL-4 + (GL-4/GL-5)
  • Mobil Mobilube 1 SHC Fully Synthetic SAE 75W-90 API GL-5/MT-1
  • Shell Spirax Axle Oil S5 ATE
  • Valvoline 75W90

You can also choose gear oils from other manufacturers, however, not all are suitable for Lanos gearboxes; it is better to obtain more accurate information from a sales consultant when purchasing oil.

In addition to the oil itself, to change the oil pan, you will need to change the pan gasket. There are two types:

  • for 10 holes 96179241
  • for 11 holes 96829393

If you remove the pan to drain the oil, be sure to replace the gasket with a new one. Otherwise, after installing the pan, the old gasket will leak.

Replacement Regulations

Now we will tell you in detail how to change the oil in the gearbox of a Chevrolet Lanos without resorting to the services of repair service employees. In fact, this is not an easy task, since the manufacturer does not provide a hole on the vehicle through which used lubricant can be drained, which presents some difficulties during the work process. However, if desired, there are no impossible tasks.

Changing the oil yourself should be carried out according to the following step-by-step instructions:

To change the oil in the Lanos gearbox, you need to provide yourself with free access to the bottom of the car in the area of the engine compartment. To do this, you need to drive the vehicle onto an overpass or inspection hole.

Before starting work, it is important to warm up the engine so that the temperature of the working fluid is around sixty degrees. From the bottom, you need to find the gearbox pan fasteners and loosen them without completely unscrewing them. Before that, we install a container under the hole to drain the waste, since after loosening the fasteners, lubricant will begin to leak out.

Wait until the lubricant stops flowing, this can take from ten minutes to an hour. Carefully unscrew the pan and remove it, being careful not to tilt it towards yourself, as there may be residual hot liquid in it.

The gasket, which is located on the inside of the pan, must be removed and replaced. The next step is to thoroughly clean the pan, as well as degrease the joint elements to install a new gasket. After cleaning, you need to install the purchased gasket, preferably place it on the car sealant, and screw the pan into place.

The liquid must be filled through the hole in the crankcase, just as in the case of adding lubricant, using a funnel and a hose until the oil begins to flow out of the control opening. Then all the removed fasteners, after thorough cleaning, are screwed into place.

At this point the replacement is considered completed. All that remains is to start the engine and do a test run. After this, the vehicle is driven onto the overpass once again, all transmission parts are visually checked for lubricant leaks, and fasteners are tightened if necessary. It is advisable to check the oil level again; if it has dropped, add it to the maximum.

How to replace grease with your own hands?

You can change the fluid with the help of specialists at a service station or yourself. This process is not easy, but it can be done with your own hands.

Necessary tool

To replace, buy the lubricant itself. In accordance with the information above, oils from different manufacturers and with different compositions can be poured into the Lanos transmission. The only thing to consider when purchasing is the climate in which the vehicle is used. As well as the composition and standard of the liquid to which it corresponds. You will need:

  • set of wrenches and sockets;
  • a new pan gasket or sealant, since the old one will become unusable;
  • container for draining waste;
  • construction or medical syringe with a tube;
  • clean rags.

Do-it-yourself gasket made from paronite for the transmission pan

Algorithm of actions

Since lubricant replacement is not provided, the manufacturer did not equip the Chevrolet Lanos transmission with a drain hole. Because of this, inconveniences may arise during the process, but thanks to the instructions you can deal with them:

Start the car's power unit and warm it up. You can drive about ten kilometers to warm up the lubricant. Drive the vehicle into a garage with a pit; if you don’t have one, you can use an overpass. It is most convenient to work with a lift, but such equipment is usually only available at service stations. Wait about 15 minutes for the car engine to cool down. Climb under the bottom and find the gearbox. Loosen the bolts on the pan, but do not unscrew it completely. Place a basin or bucket under it to collect the waste liquid. If they are unavailable, you can use a cut bottle. After loosening the screws, grease will begin to drain from the pan.

Wait until it stops draining. After this, you need to carefully remove the pan, since a small volume of liquid will remain there, wash it thoroughly, clean it of dirt and gasket residues. Use a wrench to unscrew the cover on the transmission inspection hole; in some cars this will require force. It needs to be cleaned and washed

Don't lose the O-ring. If it is worn out or damaged during dismantling, it must be replaced before pouring. Install a new gasket. For better fixation, use sealant. Make sure that it is installed securely and tightly, as if there are gaps, fluid will leak from the system. Attach the pan in place, tighten all the bolts. Find the breather - the filler plug on the transmission, unscrew it with a wrench. Clean the outside and inside of any remaining grease and dirt. Be careful not to damage the bolt. Pour new oil into the transmission through the hole. This stage will be difficult because it is difficult to reach. To add liquid, use a construction or medical syringe with a hose, pouring lubricant into it in advance. You can also use a funnel. Carry out the filling process until the lubricant begins to come out of the inspection hole. When this happens, you need to screw the plug back on. Reinstall the bolt. Clean the gearbox from residual fluid and adhering dust. Start the engine and take a test drive. You need to travel 5-10 km. After this, drive the vehicle back into the garage or onto an overpass and look under the bottom. Check the transmission, pan and all openings for leaks. If the transmission has been cleaned, there should be no traces of fluid in the gearbox. If they are present, the leak must be eliminated. Check the amount of oil in the system. Add it if necessary.

The oil change process is described in more detail in the video (the material was filmed and published by user Alexander Mart).

Flushing

It must be performed when there is dirt and deposits in the mining. To do this, after draining the liquid, a special liquid is poured into the box.

A vehicle of any class requires regular maintenance and systematic inspections in order to prevent breakdowns and ensure safety on the road. One of the important elements of vehicle maintenance is monitoring the level and quality of oil, on which the functionality of the vehicle’s transmission units and the period of its operation depend. In this article we will tell you how the Chevrolet Lanos is produced on its own, we will explain the specifics of determining the need to replace it, and the criteria for choosing a lubricant.

Regulations for changing the oil in the Chevrolet Lanos gearbox.

Getting ready for replacement

Not every car owner has changed the oil in their Lanos. The manufacturer of these cars pours fluid into the gearbox for the entire life of the car, so in most cases it is simply not necessary. But what exactly is the service life of your car? Even the manufacturer won’t tell you this, because replacement of consumables is not provided for by the design of the Chevrolet Lanos.

One way or another, it is still worth replacing the consumable fluid (TM - transmission oil) periodically. What mileage is needed for this - each driver must decide individually. As a rule, this is done every 100 thousand km. But depending on other factors, the need to change the TM may occur earlier. For example, the fluid has expired or there are almost no consumables left in the gearbox.

How to check the TM level?

It is recommended to check the TM level in the unit at least once a year or every 10 thousand km.

  1. To do this, find where the inspection hole plug is located on the transmission of your Chevrolet Lanos. The inspection hole itself is located on the crankcase of the unit next to the inner joint of the right wheel drive.
  2. By unscrewing the plug, you can see the fluid level in the gearbox. If there is enough HM in the unit, then you will see it immediately: the liquid level will practically touch the edge of the hole. The level may be slightly below the edge.
  3. If you cannot see fluid in the gearbox, this means that the TM level is significantly reduced. Then you will need to add lubricant to the unit so as not to disrupt its operation or replace the fluid.

What kind of oil should I use?

What kind of fluid should you pour into your car's transmission? This question has crossed the minds of many Lanos owners. If you have a car operating manual, then you can easily find out what kind of oil needs to be poured into the unit. This is clearly stated in the instructions. But if for some reason you do not have a manual and do not have this information, then we will help you decide on the choice of consumables.

Of course, under no circumstances should you pour transmission oil of unknown manufacture into your “iron horse”. Also, you should not pour fluid into the Chevrolet Lanos gearbox that you are not sure of the quality. The Chevrolet manufacturer recommends that car owners fill the gearbox with mineral TM SAE 90W GL-4. This option is the most optimal for Lanos. If the vehicle is operated in a region where low temperatures prevail most of the year, then it is advisable to use 75W-90 GL-4 semi-synthetic oil in the gearbox.

- Loading …

Climatic conditions are an important factor when choosing transmission fluid. If you use the latest TM (75W-90 GL-4) in a car operating in a temperate climate, then in the summer, extraneous noise may appear in the gearbox, which will disappear only with the onset of cold weather.

Below are photos of the fluid change.

1. Unscrew the pan bolts, clean it of dirt and gasket residues

2. Unscrew the inspection hole plug with a wrench

3. Remove the filler breather on the box

4. Fill the transmission with new lubricant and perform a test drive

Checking the oil level yourself

Every 10,000 km, the car owner must check the oil level in the Lanos gearbox. Especially for this you need to find the filler plug located on the crankcase.

In ideal condition, the oil level in the Chevrolet Lanos box should be up to the edge of the hole. The presence of a low level may be the reason that the car has become worse to drive. In this case, the best option would be to replace the fuel with a similar one. In some cases, adding new fluid is allowed. Filling the gearbox with oil can be done using improvised means (a funnel connected to an elastic hose).

Draining oil from the gearbox using hoses

For safety reasons, in order not to get burned, you need to be as careful as possible when draining the old liquid. The tray must be cleaned from contamination. The pan gasket needs replacing. It is placed on the inside of it. At the end of the work, you need to start the engine, alternately switching each speed several times. If after this the level of filled fuel is reduced, more oil is added.

What will you need?

Before starting the procedure for replacing the lubricant, you should prepare all the necessary tools, as well as buy oil and a new gasket for the pan, which will have to be replaced during the work. To carry out the operation you will need the following materials:

  • Standard set of socket and socket wrenches.
  • A container for used oil, with a capacity of about two liters.
  • A sealant that will be needed when installing a gasket on the neck of the pan to prevent fluid leakage.
  • Medical or special construction syringe with an elastic hose.
  • Universal products for external cleaning and degreasing of engine compartment parts.
  • Clean rags.

When all the tools and materials are available, you can begin to work.

Choosing transmission fluid for a Chevrolet Lanos manual transmission

The main question before starting the process of changing the lubricant is the dilemma of which oil is best to pour into the Chevrolet Lanos gearbox? The car manufacturer recommends filling the box only with original oil, which is marked API GL-4 SAE 80W-90. However, users claim that the Chevrolet Lanos is an unpretentious vehicle and perfectly accepts other lubricants of a similar composition. The main thing is to purchase goods in certified stores, avoiding buying them in spontaneous markets.

In addition, the choice of oil type may vary depending on the climatic conditions in which the vehicle is operated. Experts advise car owners who live and drive mainly in harsh weather conditions to select oils of lower viscosity, which will ease the load on transmission units during engine startup and operation. At the same time, the quality of the fluid must remain at a high level, and preference should be given to synthetic types of fluid or semi-synthetic oils. Professionals do not recommend purchasing mineral oil even for cars with a long service life.

Which oil to buy for a Chevrolet is a subjective decision for every motorist, however, when saving money, do not forget about quality; the functionality and controllability of the vehicle, as well as the service life of the car’s components, depend on it.

Changing the oil in a Lanos manual transmission - is it necessary to change it?

The gearbox in a car plays a very important role, and if it malfunctions, expensive repairs will be required. The main structural elements of the mechanism are gears, the wear of which is reduced through the use of lubricants. The gearbox, like the engine, uses oil, which needs to be changed periodically.

This is interesting!

The material discusses the process of changing the oil in the gearbox for Lanos cars. Sensas are equipped with other types of gearboxes, so the maintenance technology is different.

Changing the oil in the gearbox on Lanos is mandatory, and the reasons for this are the following factors:

  1. When the gears rotate, wear of the teeth and the formation of chips are observed, which accumulate in the pan. There is no filter in the gearbox, so the oil change procedure is a mandatory step.
  2. Loss of transmission lubricant's original properties. This occurs due to temperature differences, as a result of which its viscosity decreases, and therefore lubrication efficiency decreases.
  3. Gear wear accelerates due to an increase in the amount of chips, as well as due to a decrease in the beneficial properties of the lubricant.
  4. Leakage and decrease in fluid level due to wear of the sealing gasket of the pan cover, which needs to be replaced.

Although this mechanism is one of the most reliable, if it is not maintained, there is a significant reduction in service life.

This is interesting!

The Lanos gearbox is filled from the factory with two types of fluids that differ in color - red and green with a yellow tint. The red lubricant (original oil from GM), as stated by the manufacturer itself, does not need to be replaced, since it has a significantly long service life. Green oil with a yellow tint needs to be changed after 80 thousand kilometers (as indicated by the manufacturer).

How to check the level correctly?

Diagnostics of the transmission lubrication level should be performed every 10 thousand km.

Many Lanos car owners are interested in how to look and check the oil level. These vehicles are not equipped with a dipstick to determine fluid volume. Therefore, the test is performed through the inspection hole. It is located directly on the transmission housing, not far from the internal drive joint of the right wheel, which, for greater convenience, can be removed by placing the car on a jack and unscrewing the bolts securing it. You need to remove the hole plug and look straight into it. The lubricant level should be at the edge or slightly lower. But so that you can reach the surface of the liquid with your finger.

Alexander Vlasov provided a video on diagnosing the lubricant level in the gearbox and replacing it.

When is it necessary to change the oil in the Lanos gearbox?

How to determine the need for oil? You just need to unscrew the oil level indicator plug. The oil should reach almost to the plug. If you don't see the oil level, it's time to change it. An indication for an oil change may be extraneous noise during operation. Sometimes, if you live in an area with hot summers and cold winters, you may need to change your transmission oil seasonally.

There are different recommendations for mileage - some recommend changing it once every 100 thousand kilometers, while others recommend changing it more often - once every 10-15 thousand kilometers. Experience in operating domestic cars suggests that the latter recommendation is more realistic - usually on Ladas they are changed once every 5 thousand kilometers, perhaps on a Chevrolet it will be less often. In general, look at the tachometer and under the oil indicator plug.
